"Retro-style" adventure game Boreal Tenebrae is coming to Switch this week, it has been revealed.
Inspired by PlayStation 1-era classics, the title places you in the role of several characters who are tasked with exploring their town and getting to the bottom of a strange mystery. It is said to combine "mysterious atmosphere and horror elements" and was nominated for Best Art Direction and Best Narrative at the Canadian Game Awards 2021.
We caught a glimpse of the game last year via an animated short, but the new trailer above can be viewed in 360 degrees.
Does Boreal Tenebrae look like it's up your street? Sound off in the comments to tell us.

Looks nothing like PS1 graphics, lol
@Clyde_Radcliffe
I don’t even know what retro graphics it’s attempting to look like.
@SalvorHardin @Clyde_Radcliffe It doesn't say PS1 graphics, it says inspired by "Playstation 1-era classics" but it doesn't mention how. Could be gameplay, atmosphere, controls etc.
Anyway aren't RedDeerGames a big pusher of NFTs now? I won't support any game published by them.
I'm also quite confused.... What makes it inspired by the ps1 era? 🤔
From what they've shown so far, they might as well could have said they were inspired by My Little Pony
I was also Very confused at how it was PS1 inspired by the trailer - but then found this gameplay video on YouTube. https://youtu.be/RRHpiLLoaG0
Probably looks a little too clean for a PS1 game, but the 4:3 ratio, fuzzy graphics, controls and fonts/text boxes are all very PS1 (the game looks like it plays like silent hill etc. and the text boxes look ripped from PS1 square soft RPGs.).
This is giving me YIIK vibes.
Canadian game awards? Is that like a local thing in downtown Toronto or something?
@Ogbert ooh good catch there, watched the trailer and was intrigued. Thanks for noting their NFT support I haven't heard of this publisher/dev before and have heard about that news. I will not be getting this game! Any publisher that is touting NFT's and NFT "games" is one I would not like to support.
These are not PS1 graphics, it looks similar to those FMV 3D visuals found in games like Flashback and Out of this World.
@KoiTenchi more like YIIKes
@Matty1988 yeah, I couldn’t find a good way to phrase it without it sounding like bashing (and I like to give new developers a chance) but giving off a YIIK vibe is not a good quality in my book.
Edit: Didn’t even previously know about the NFT connection until I saw it in the comments here so that’s two strikes against the game now.
