Last week, it was confirmed The House of the Dead: Remake would be launching on Nintendo Switch via the eShop this April, with pre-orders opening on 31st March.
If you would prefer a hard copy of the game, you'll be able to pick up Microids' previously revealed physical release. We've now got our first look at this version of the game. According to various retailers, the limited edition will include an exclusive box, two character stands, stickers and a copy of the game. Pre-orders appear to also be open on select websites.
In case you missed the original announcement, this is a "remade version" of the 1997 light gun shooter. It promises to include gameplay changes to "suit modern gaming standards" and will also feature updated graphics.
Will you be adding this one to your physical collection when it arrives on the Nintendo Switch? Tell us below.

It’s a nice little set that. Nothing too spectacular, but the lenticular case is the best thing after the game for me. I’m getting the game Digitally, but it’s a shame they could never incorporate a Gun Peripheral or Two that you slot the Joy Cons in to give it that Arcade Feel.
Day one for me! I made sure to get a preorder in right away!
Hopefully this goes up for pre-order on UK sites!
Edit: On Amazon, kewl.
I'm holding out for the Typing edition.
iconic house of the dead characters include:
-Zombie
-Zombie with chainsaw
If there is no joycon gun accessory included, i'll pass. I don't want stickers and little cardboard zombies.
If only it came with the main thing a House of the Dead game should always came with.
@Specter_of-the_OLED I’ve still got my Hand Cannon for bouts of shooting fun on the Wii.
Wish the Switch had a comparable catalogue of light gun games as the Wii did. HotD 2, 3 & Overkill, Sin & Punishment, Ghost Squad, Gunblade NY to name a few of the highlights Plus the Wiimotes worked a treat!
What does the inside of the box look like?
Is there going to be motion aiming controls with the Joycons or pro controller? If so I'm in, but I don't want to use sticks with a reticle.
I really hope they get this remake right. I was gutted with how Panzer Dragoon turned out. That said, it's certainly looking promising.
Instead of the tat, where is the Joy-Con pistol shell at?
Hell yes.. I'll be pre-ordering this next week 😁
Love these games. I still play House of the Dead 2 on Dreamcast today with the Light Gun.
So the choices are a digital copy or an expensive, deluxe physical set? Wish there were a midpoint between those two.
Eh, it won't be the same without my Nyko Perfect Shot.
Physical looks great, but many suspect the game won't play well...
Switch gyro doesn't cut it, due to constant need for recalibration (Skyward Sword).
Also, they said we were getting 1&2, now it's just one. That a 100% markup now.
@OorWullie Panzer Dragoon on Switch was disappointing, but the remake on PC is amazing! I’m assuming you are referencing performance.
@RubyCarbuncle Never change your icon, it’s perfect.
NINJA APPROVED
@Half-ShellHero I'm pretty sure it will have gyro support
Very bizarre that it's out in 4 weeks but no real info on controls/improvements/etc.
Will hold off for a decent Sale later this year if it reviews well.
@Patendo Same! This was Day 1, until they went silent for half a year, then released this trailer with no particular details about the Switch version.
My fear is that they either dropped the gyro controls, or they’re just terrible to use..hoping it does turn out okay though.
I'm glad to see old Sega games getting remakes but this does seem on odd choice in an era of no light guns, at least outside of PC now so hopefully this gets a PC release. Let's face it this has no chance of playing as well as the original game, or even the Wii games which were a decent approximation. Still I'll be buying this out of curiosity and it should still be fun to play
Best DS gifted find from a friend: English of the Dead.
What's the deal on accessories for this game? Are there Gun grips for the Joy Con that can be used?
Surely they haven't gone to all the effort of remaking the game and then expect you to point a joy con at the screen...
I remember someone here saying that this was a compilation of both HOTD 1 and HOTD 2. Is that the case?
@Specter_of-the_OLED Yes! Yes! And yes.
Will this be released in ordinary stores?
Original looks better. Not surprised as it's "Forever Software".
Microids are one of my least favourite publishers. You'd think Sega would want to publish their own IP.
Looking forward to the game, hope they haven't messed it up.
Any news on a UK/Euro physical release?
Looking forward to this. I thought Panzer Dragoon was fine (albeit I personally think the first one is over rated anyway.) HotD has aged a tad so I do hope this does it justice whilst retaining some of the B movie clunkyness.
The lack of information on the controller method is worrying at this stage.
I’m assuming it’s because the truth will damage sales.
No physical release until December 2022? Is that really the correct date? I'll get the limited edition from Amazon UK, its £34.99.
@BloodNinja Haha thanks.
@NerdyBoutKirby You'll be waiting awhile to get this in the mail too I'm sure. I do think this looks cool but this doesn't have guns and I don't feel like waiting around for another 2 months if not longer to receive it.
I'll be honest. This is s little disappointing. It comes with stickers, character stands and an exclusive box. (Which I'll say the exclusive box art is my favorite part about it) and no guns. Maybe they'll do multiple physical releases through other sites or even better just a retail release. Also, you'll probably be waiting around awhile to get this. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to pass.
Huh I didn't even know this was a series I only played that one game on wii
While I'm a fan of on-rails shooters, I'll hang fire for the reviews. Like others have pointed out it just won't be the same experience without suitable accessory. I had a blast with blue light gun on Sega Saturn for both Virtua Cop games and later on the Wii had 2 zappers for many hours teaming up playing HOTD and Ghost Squad. Links Crossbow Training was a lot of fun too.
@Half-ShellHero @Kintypoo121 @Lord Oddly enough they address Joycon gyros in comments. But why not just say that outright? Oh yeah, there’s a horde mode now with 15x the zombie count and they redid the attract mode sequence from the original game.

@TheWingedAvenger @GamerDad66 (EDITED: for clarity)
They’re making HotD1 first, then HotD2. The lost source code of the first game is what inspired this remake, and made it a priority.
Good or bad, I can’t wait for this to come out. And as a cosmic coincidence, the shipping dates for the vinyl soundtracks for HotD 1&2 had gotten pushed back to roughly the same time frame as the remake. Which I’m even more excited for since they’ll be my first vinyls and they just had to be bangers! I could listen to HotD1’s Stage 1 BGM, Tragedy, all day!

@GamerDad66 that's exactly, what I'm thinking. There's a plastic gun coming out with putting the joy Cons inside, like on Wii.
But with just Gyro Sensors in the Joy Cons, I also doubt, that it will be fun on Switch.

@masterLEON "Yes, you may use joy-cons' gyro to point and shoot at your screen "
I'm out. I'm not playing a HOTD game with a gyro joycon. Doesn't anyone realize there is a IR sensor on joycons?
@Moistnado I find it interesting that there are people comforted by that (gyro aiming w/gun grip). The IR without something like a sensor bar is just a recipe for disaster. I mean, was it any good in Nintendo Labo? Then again, there may be a handful of people out there that use the Joycon grip with motion aiming for Splatoon 2.(?)
Amazon description!
Play alone or with a friend, using joycons or a gun!
@Jayenkai I genuinely own typing of the dead on Dreamcast 😂
@Gs69 Yep! Best use of the keyboard.. .. except maybe Q3Arena.
Am I the only one wonder what “ Play alone or with a friend, using joy-cons or a gun” means??? Read the features description…
Does various other Gun Switch games work with this? I have the chicken gun will that work? And I got the Bass Bro Combo gun as well so I got two guns to use and if so this would be great.
I still play House of the Dead 2&3, and House of the Dead: Overkill on Wii, usually around Halloween time. Hopefully this plays well on Switch.
@masterLEON
Thanks a lot! Strangely enough, most people who talk about this release don't think it's a good idea to mention that it contains the sequel as well!
Hope it coming more Arcade shooter
@TheWingedAvenger Oh wait, I worded that wrong. It’s just the first game. (and now I see Polygon reported it wrong, too)

This is a 30 minutes replay value game. I know cause i have House of the Dead (Dreamcast and Wii). Is this a $9,90 game?
Lol, why do people constantly asking for a gun accessory? It won’t work anyway because you have to recalibrate the gyro all the time. Switch controllers don’t scan the screen like it was possible on tube tv.
@masterLEON - I am no expert but from using lablo, it appears to me that the IR camera could work like a psmove in reverse. Light from the screen could prevent the IR from sensing things but perhaps it could recognise and track the screen itself. Problem is, it would probably only work in the dark l. It would also need someone to care enough about it to not use gyro. It would be better for Nintendo to release a special joycon or gun, or some software demo for devs to use the IR or gyro. I hope sort this prior to releasing any of the Metroid prime games. The IR pointer controls conversion to gyro in the 3D All Stars version of galaxy was adequate, but for an actual shooter, especially one like HOTD, it just won't work.
@Moistnado Now that I think about it, the biggest downside of IR aiming is that only one Joycon has the IR sensor. Nintendo probably has rules against only developing with intent on using Right Joycons only for multiplayer. That said, I think I read here on NL that World of Goo had a really good implementation of gyro pointing. So it’s not impossible, it just depends on how much the developer cares. Still, we have the technology to redo rail shooters, Bluetooth and IR emitters/sensors. Just bring it back! That’s how The House of the Dead 2 and the later games work. 8 IR emitters around the screen and one sensor in each gun. Heck, bring back the Wii Remotes and sensor bars!
Stickers and cardboard cutouts? Whoa you'll be the envy of absolutely nobody!
It would be good it works like in Assault Chaingun S
@masterLEON I'd totally buy a Wii remote and sensor bar for my switch. Id also buy an IR emitter and gun shaped holder for my joycon. I would not buy a HOTD game with just gyro controls though.
I seriously hope this isn’t 30fps or has at least a 60fps mode, Overkill was 30fps and thar ruined it for me, light gun games just aren’t the same and as fun with low framerate. I wish they’d realese a VR version to be honest…
Ooooooooooooooooooooooooo stickers
I loved the old light gun games such as this, Virtua Cop and Time Crisis.
Not sure how will play under their "modern control methods" but will probably wait until the reviews are in.
@masterLEON They could make a usb sensor bar and gun thingie, bundled with the game for example, or separate and port over all their Wii light gun games and make me happy (and make money in doing it). Overkill Extended on Switch is a, no pun, no brainer then.
Gyro is a must in 3d shooters on Switch for me, like proper mouse support is for shooters on pc, but it only really works for me when the settings are right for playing in handheld (gyro 'pointer' uses different axis that don't work as intended in handheld). If you move the Switch, like a 'view finder' or whatever, to aim, it's perfect. But not to move a crosshair on screen, that's what pointer controls are for, and where gyro on its own lacks feedback from a reference point, a 'sensor bar'.
@NerdyBoutKirby £35 isn't that expensive mate
@Specter_of-the_OLED I still prefer the one with the black grip that came bundled with my copy of the game, but yes, HOTD without a gun is like... something else that needs something else to be complete. A physical box of a game with just a download code in it, for example.
I love this game, but no guns is absolutely pointless, and I can't believe so many people are hyped to play it with cross hairs.
I hope there is some joycon update as it does not work well with holders for shooting games.
@BloodNinja I haven't actually played the remake. What I've seen of it really put me off. I probably should give it a chance now though as I believe it's improved a fair bit since launch. I watched some gameplay of the PC version and it does look really good.
I really CAN'T understand why Nintendo gives all that credit to Forever Entertainment. That company is terrible.
The remake looks very ugly, the game completely lost its "cartoonish" style.
P.s. don't buy that trash.
instead, if you have the VR Quest 2, I highly recommend "DROP DEAD". It's similar to House of the Dead, deserves to be played especially if you love HotD or rail shooters. Pure fun.
@Specter_of-the_OLED yeah the switch doesn't even need a whole new controller, just something with a trigger that clicks a button on the joycon. I think that would definitely have gotten me to buy it, now I may just wait for a sale.
@WaveBoy i now fully agree with you. I've never personally tried the joycon as pointers but have since watched a test video and it simply isn't possible. This is a complete waste of a good port in my opinion.
@WaveBoy If it had a gun and sensor bar i would be all over it, it's kinda impossible to f#ck up. Although some of the character redesigns do look a little weird.
