Nintendo has announced that WayForward's Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp has been delayed.
The surprise decision was made on Twitter, and is likely a response to the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.
The package, which contains remakes of GBA classics Advance Wars and Advance Wars 2, has already been delayed once to allow WayForward to work on some finishing touches.
No new release date has been announced as of yet.
This isn't the first time that the Advance Wars series has been impacted by real-world events; the first GBA title launched in North America on September 10th, 2001, a day before 9/11. The European version was delayed until the following year, while the Japanese release of both the original and its sequel would have to wait until Game Boy Wars Advance 1+2 arrived in 2004.

Understandable, not really the best time to release a modern era war based game
Advance Wars on GBA also got delayed (in Japan?) due to 9/11.
Huge respect!
This is fair. Sucks to have a second delay, but real life comes first. (also, this game was going to be swalloed in its april release window
I was waiting for this one since the announcement day, but that's an understandable decision.
Disappointing, but perfectly understandable.
Hopefully they'll use this extra time to polish up the game even further though!
Remember when the Japanese release date of the original Advance Wars on GBA was delayed, because of it's planned release in September 2001??
I'm not superstitious or anything, but wow this series has had a rough break from the very start.
It's a shame that it didn't release back in December like originally planned or we could have already played it long before these events went down. I would have preferred them to still just release it as scheduled personally but at the same time I've got a lot of other games that I want to play more releasing around the same time so I'm not sweating it too much. I would have been more upset if Triangle Strategy got delayed.
Makes sense, I've been playing the GBA one on my Analogue Pocket anyway.
Totally understandable and applauded.
However you would start to think this game is snake bit.
Am I the only one who feels like this is going too far? I get that there's a lot of terrible stuff happening today, but there's always going to be terrible stuff happening. I guess I just feel that Nintendo shouldn't deprive people of a good experience just because another bad experience is happening somewhere else in the world.
The conflict in question has been going on for 8 years now and it hasn’t stopped publishers releasing games. There have been conflicts in several parts of the world that have been raging for ages and publishers/developers have barely made a peep about them (all the while releasing games that accurately depict ongoing wars to the protest of basically nobody).
If it’s a disrespectful time right now to release a game like this then there never will be an appropriate time to release it in a world such as ours.
I pre-ordered the title using a voucher, but that pre-order has been removed.
I almost said how does this have to do with that but then I realized this is a war game 💀
@acefondu wait the pocket also does gba games?
Oh.... I suppose that would be awkward timing wouldn't it.... this is umm.... yeah.... yikes.
I completely understand and agree with this but I do wonder how far they’ll go with this. The new fire emblem is also about war and is a lot less cartoony about it than this game. Will that get delayed too?
Understandable. Triangle Strategy is also scratching my tactics game itch right now anyway.
@StarPoint i tend to agree not sure how this helps Ukraine. It’s just a game, a bit of fun for those who buy it. It’s a cartoon style too. Think most people are sensible enough to realise that.
I think it's a perfectly fair and responsible decision. Look forward to it arriving later in the year.
Goldeneye, if it's real, has surely had the same delay too.

Call me callous, but aren't we going just a tad overboard here?
I know that what's going on in Ukraine is terrible, but how does delaying games help them? Are we going to push back every other game that references war as well?
Man, Advance Wars just cannot avoid this problem! Releases a day before 9/11 in the states originally, and its remake now the same time as the biggest invasion in Europe since WW2.
Probably for the best both times tho. A cute little war game with tanks rolling into town doesn't look too playful when it's surrounded by the real life version of it at the moment.

At first I wondered how this was at all helpful or useful to people but, thinking a bit broader there are plenty of hack game journalists who would use this game's release as a springboard to spew their unbelievably stupid opinions disguised as a review of this game.

Understandable all things considered.

Actually just restarted advance wars 2 on my gba micro, waiting for my pocket to arrive..
weird that it happened with 9/11 and now again...
I really fail to see how this war is any different than the United States' wars of aggression that have been happening for decades. I mean I am not naive I do know why this is treated differently but it still sucks to see how much the reaction to war is dependant on what the victims looks like.
Yeah, understandable
It's so abstracted away from the realities of war that this series barely even counts in the genre of war games. It's like delaying a chess game because of real-life war.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
@Tinglemies I've always wondered the practicality of that situation. For what would maybe end up half a day response time, they'd have to have already manufactured the cartridges and packaging, etc. to just suddenly leave them all in a warehouse forever.
It would be understandable to delay, but from what I heard, it wouldn't be Yamauchi to flush money down the toilet by never releasing a completed product.
Well, works for me; had planned to hold off on buying it.
Seems to be a silly reason to delay the release, but whatever.
Play the originals, they've aged as well as any game from the early 00s
@naxuu I think that’s kind of what makes it insensitive. The main character on multiple occasions calls war fun and the way the whole games presented with all these generals becoming buddies and whatnot is pretty insensitive. That’s not to mention the fact that the villain is literally based off of Russia too

Sheesh, this game is a precursor of actual war. Maybe change the name to Advance Cease Fire.
@Tinglemies
At times like these, even sarcasm like that might be criticised.
Unfortunate it had to be delayed indefinitely but guess it would be pretty poor timing currently to release a game centered around conventional warfare that features a faction based on Russia, no matter how lighthearted and cartoony the depiction is (which actually might make it more in poor taste).
I don't like it, but I understand their decision. I'll just have to finish my backlog featuring 50+ other titles then
@1UP_MARIO I honestly think that they’ll cancel the game ultimately. The situation certainly doesn’t seem to be slowing down, and this game certainly isn’t something that should be released during the war and Nintendo knows this. It wouldn’t be the first time either as this series has an interesting history of launching in countries like japan too
As long as they don’t delay Metal Slug Tactics!!!
Upset but also fully agree. A modern warfare game releasing during an actual war is a bit questionable. We have Switch Sports for April so maybe it’ll release during a month without another release.
Prayers to everyone hurting right now and hopefully these recent events don’t break out into anything worse.
@MysticX I don't think the delay is intended to support or help Ukraine. Releasing now is probably just considered a bad optic when superimposed upon real-world events. It's easy to imagine gamers' moronic Twitter posts going viral. I'm sure this is a short-term thing.
I don't think they'll cancel this. Just wait until the war isn't dominating the news. Hopefully, within the next nine months
