Pre-orders for the physical edition of River City Girls Zero for the Nintendo Switch recently went live, and now to add to this WayForward has locked in a Switch eShop release date.
If you would prefer this over a hard copy of the game, or just can't wait any longer - you'll be able to experience this 1994 16-bit beat-'em-up gem in both North America and Europe next week on February 14th. A release on other platforms will follow this Spring.
In case you've missed our previous post, River City Girls Zero is a localisation of the '94 Super Famicom title Shin Nekketsu Koha: Kunio-tachi no Banka - and got delayed until "early 2022" at the end of last year to make sure it was the "best experience" possible when it did arrive.
Ths new version will remain faithful to the original game, but will also include a number of updates:
"River City Girls Zero, meanwhile, lets players experience the first time that Misako and Kyoko teamed up with Kunio and Riki to take to the streets in hard-hitting, curb-stomping action. While the graphics, music, and gameplay all remain true to the classic 16-bit Super Famicom release, this version marks the first time the 1994 game will be localized for the West. A new opening cinematic, new manga cutscenes, and new theme song by River City Girls composer Megan McDuffee have been added as well. Set out solo or team up with a friend in local co-op and discover how the River City Girls story began!"
You can learn more about the Limited Run physical editions in our previous post - pre-orders are available now and there are three different versions to choose from (standard, classic and ultimate):

Oh, interesting! I must have missed this news the first time around. Those additions are definitely appreciated, but I wonder if the original Japanese release version will be included as an option or bonus mode.
That promo campaign packs a punch!
Ok so I knew there was a River City Girls game a couple of years back and I believe it's getting a sequel but I didn't realize that there was a classic Snes game from 94 and I'm fairly well versed in the Kunio-Kun games. At least I thought I was. I recommend KidShoryuken on Youtube to anyone looking for a Japanese gaming fix. He lives in Tokyo and spends alot of time in Akiba and Hard-Off adventuring for good game deals. Plenty of time in Super Potato and Savers as well.
Hmm, are these games like story tied or something
How much is the digital version?
The new art with character designs reminiscent of early 90s anime is pretty fun. It's pretty cool they're actually updating the presentation a bit with cutscenes.
Pretty cool that they added cutscenes to this as well. Can’t wait to play this for the very first time.
@Ralizah so I can start with this game? I never played any of these games before
I played river city ransom on my switch and it was alright. Though I’m pretty sure it didn’t have the XP mechanics from the newer games.😅
Does anyone else find it a bit hard to increase your stats or is it just me?
Great way to kick off the 35th Kunio Kun anniversary! :v
@Greatluigi If it’s the very first RCR, then you basically have to buy food items to increase your stats. Back in the day I used to fight the respawnable bosses over and over to grind for cash. Then hit up all the food spots and get my stats up. That’s not all! CDs from the music store, toys from the toy store, and items from the pharmacy can increase stats, as well. I even went as far as writing down what each item increased which stat(s), unfortunately those notes are long gone.
i like the idea of this series but playing the actual game (i mean the new game) i kinda died of boredom at the first boss
Need to hear if the translation is good or not before I buy, but am interested.
This is really just a mediocre game. Nothing to get hyped about.
Definitely excited to play this one, and super hyped to play RCG2 later this year. Great year for bmups on Switch with Shredder’s Revenge coming as well.
