Update [Fri 11th Feb, 2022 14:05 GMT]: SwitchBuddy has now been updated to version 1.6.0 and allows users to view their transferred screenshots in a brand new Gallery.
Here's the PR:
With version 1.6.0, gamers can view their transferred screenshots in a brand new Gallery. Screenshots are grouped by game and sorted by date for an optimal viewing experience.
There is a full-screen image viewer with zoom and fluid gestured. Screenshots can be shared via native Share Sheet by the "tap and hold" gesture on the miniatures in the Gallery.
Together with the Gallery, new version brings third export option to the app. In-app storage acts as a source for the Gallery and exported files are also available via iOS Files app for easy backup or other actions.
More minor new features include a new "Issues" screen to help troubleshoot connection to Switch and an email support option.
The last new feature is aimed at gamers playing in docked mode. With new viewfinder zoom (up to 10x), it is now possible to comfortably scan the QR code for connection without getting up and getting close to the TV.
Original Story [Wed 29th Dec, 2021 19:00 GMT]: Being in the writing-about-video-games business, we spend quite a bit of time transferring screenshots from our devices to our phones or PCs — perhaps more than most. Some of us have nifty capture cards set up that save to hard drive immediately, but the rest of us rely on Nintendo's own screenshot transfer solution, which involves either transferring the micro SD card to your PC or scanning a QR code on your Switch with your smartphone and saving each screenshot to your Camera Roll individually.
It's fine — it works — but the process could be smoother, which is where SwitchBuddy comes in. Developed by Filip Němeček, this mobile app has been around for a while now and aims to make the transfer a little less painful by essentially streamlining the laborious 'Save to Camera Roll' bit.
You'll still have to select the images you want on your Switch and 'Send to Smart Device' (feel free to check out our guide if you need more info on that), but whereas Nintendo's option requires you to tap and hold each image individually to save them to your device, SwitchBuddy has an interface which does the same with a simple button press. On iOS it also has the ability to save the screengrabs directly to iCloud Drive if you don't want to clog up your Camera Roll.
SwitchBuddy also lets you tweet or forward the selected image(s) via various apps to any recipient of your choosing without downloading it yourself, if you prefer. Observe our own tests where we transferred these rather fetching Blasphemous and Metroid Dread shots:
Is this a game-changer? Well, no. It's hardly a massive difference — and it does mean you have to have another (free) app on your phone — but it is admittedly slicker than Nintendo's own solution and it will save you time and thumb taps, which could be invaluable if, like us, you transfer a lot of shots from your Switch into the wider digital world. It also comes with a few nifty colour themes to choose from.
Improved speed and usability? Folder selection? Colour themes? Seems like Nintendo could learn a thing or two. The app is free to download/use and is available on App Store, Google Play, or the SwitchBuddy website.
Let us know below if you use this app already, or if you might check it out in the future.

I can't help but feel second hand embarrassment every time a third party makes better alternatives to Nintendo's poor non-game software offerings. Things like dekudeals and now this, which just uses Nintendo's existing functionality but better. Nintendo really needs to increase their investment on their non-game software.
@Madao Sony are pretty garbage at this too in all fairness. I have to use Twitter which I can’t be bothered with just to upload my screenshots.
@Madao I agree. Uploading smash clips for example are also a huge pain.
You have to first record your clip (with no options to fast forward or rewind), convert it to a video, then upload it to the NSO app then wait an absurdly long time for it to do so. Then after thats all done you go to the app then copy the youtube link of said clip and now you have your smash clip.
Theres alot of things that are really convoluted on the switch that have no business being.
@Madao You can just use a USB-C cable and connect the Switch to a PC or Mac and you're good to go. Easiest and fastest way to copy screenshots and screen recordings.
@Madao Embarassed? You should be excited that third party does this. Why would Nintendo do it when 3rd parties are going to do it anyways? More reason Nintendo should just focus on making great games and not wasting time doing all these non-gaming features that doesn't benefit them. You don't have to be the jack of all trades ya know cause then you'll become just the master of none.
Hello 👋 SwitchBuddy developer here. Just wanted to add that I am happy to answer questions and possibly help with issues regarding the app 👍
@Madao Nintendo has always been in the stone age when it comes to anything with that scary "online" stuff.
@Madao one of their glaring weaknesses, but I don’t expect them to grasp it. Microsoft has this feature in the bag thanks to OneDrive, whether it’s my Xbox (any of them), Mac, iPhone, iPad or Ryzen 5 build, I can access all my Xbox recordings.
Wish Sony and Nintendo could have figured it out, but Microsoft is a software and solutions company first. Which is a huge benefit for them, but games are their weakness right now.
@nemecek_f Jsi fakt frajer Je fajn, ze tu v Cechach mame i par dalsich Nintendo nadsencu. Uz se tesim, ze si appku stahnu:)
@nessisonett i can't even use Twitter on my extended battery Switch(my Switch refuse to acess my Twitter acount), i can only acess my Facebook acount
Nintendo is pretty terrible in regard to video/photo sharing, why Nintendo only let me share my photo/videos in my Facebook acount? why i can't do the same for my Twitter acount?
@nemecek_f
Does the app have an easy function to simply import all screenshots and vids on the system and separate into game labeled folders? And if so, can you refine the selection process to limit to all pics and vids for a selected group of specific games?
Btw, thanks for your contributions.
@nessisonett Twitter is pretty much just a screenshot hosting service for me for PS4 and Switch games lol
@JaxonH Not op, but its not possible, since the app just takes the qr code, connects to the hotspot, and downloads the selected images from the link. Its basically just a GUI for the ***** webside that the switch redirects to...
And you can just use USB C to USB A cable to transfer to PC like that
Best way to achieve this is to connect to a PC via USB. However, I don't understand why Nintendo doesn't allow bluetooth transfers to any other bluetooth powered device.
@T0biasCZe
Ya I've done on PC and it's super easy for mass migration.
But it would be nice to do the same to a phone.
@JaxonH Take USB C male to USB A female adapter, and connect it to phone like to PC
@JaxonH unfortunately no. It can only access those you select for “Send to smart device”. But I am actually working on a Gallery for already imported screenshots to group them by game for easy browsing
This feature only works half the time on Switch. I stopped using it.
The Xbox & Xbox app have done this screen ***** sharing feature really well
"but the rest of us rely on Nintendo's own screenshot transfer solution"
this app still relies on Nintendo's own screenshot transfer just makes some steps automatic also another similar app, but android only is Switch Transfer Tool exact same but design matches the Nintendo Switch Online app can get it at https://switchtransfertool.codefusion.ca
Removed - inappropriate language
@Specter_of-the_OLED How do we know if Nintendo's not going to remove this app themselves once they catch wind that there's a 3rd party making apps without their consent?
Xbox and Steam have this feature built in to their free first party apps.
That's along side free cloud and party chat.
@nemecek_f Hi, I have installed the app and it works great with my Android phone. I have two questions about it. Is it ok to just leave the images in the SwitchBuddy folder, or should I copy them elsewhere. The other question is what is the purpose of the green tick on the bottom right corner of the images after transferring?
Thank you for creating this app. It makes it much easier to transfer screenshots off the Switch.
@CodyMKW I use that one for Animal Crossing screenshots and it's amazing
I’ll give this a shot, it could be user error but I never have any luck with the share to smartphone feature.
@nessisonett This.
@GX_64 hi, depends on your preferences. You can feel free to keep them there or to move them further. This feature is intended as an alternative to mixing your game screenshots with photos.
The “tick” shows that screenshot has been saved already.
@San_D yea cable is really good for large amounts of screenshots. I usually transfer only a handful so the wireless works well for my needs
Was hoping this actually made the process easier..but nope. An app to click a few images? What we need is something that lets you transfer without Nintendo's barbaric way of switching networks, it's absurd to have to do that to send a picture a few feet in this age.
How about a PC app to backup Switch saved data to transfer to replacement Switch FIRST.....
Nintendo needs to learn a lot from Microsoft on this aspect. I recently got a SeriesX and the xbox app si really good on this. when you take a screenshot or video capture of your game, it gets automatically uploaded to your xbox profle and you have access on your phone in seconds. Nintendo should have something similar. plus..... free cloud data saves like xbox have.
@sanderev Didn't know that worked, cheers for the heads up. I'll do that to back up all my screenshots.
Times like these are when I miss Miiverse. I refuse to use Facebook or Twitter, so I'm stuck with the painfully obnoxious method of transferring to my phone and hoping it actually works properly. Miiverse was nice for a quick screenshot upload option (and for laughing at, well... everything on there, really).
@nemecek_f Any updates on the Android version?
@nemecek_f
Does it do anything for videos or just screenshots?
@Zyph Hi, you mean the Gallery? It should happen, but friend who develops it is bit busy these days.
@Keengamer yes, it transfers videos as well as screenshots. Because screenshots are way more popular, I am not "promoting" the video option that much. Gallery is currently screenshots only, but I do have plans to add videos as well.
@nemecek_f Yup. Aside from the gallery I'm not particularly sure since the Android version is still version 1.0.0 so I don't know what features were added to the iOS version pre 1.6.0
I get it. No use complaining for something we get for free and I really appreciate your hard work on this useful piece of software.
@Zyph I see. Android actually started with version 0.8 on Play store if I am not mistaken, so there were a couple of updates. Feature-wise the apps should be pretty close, aside from the new gallery and the camera zoom We also version differently so that is another reason.
@nemecek_f I see. Thanks!
@nemecek_f That’s great, I usually use the transfer so I can send clips to my friends
@WiltonRoots You can find it under System settings > Data Management and then Manage Screenshots and Videos. You'll get an option for "Copy to PC via USB Connection".
Then just grab a USB-A to USB-C or USB-C to USB-C cable and you can copy all screenshots and videos.
@sanderev nice one. Used my MacBook charger a lot while grinding through Dragon Quest XI S. didn’t realise it would show up as a drive on my desktop!
