We've now got the Japanese sales data for February 14th to February 20th, and we can report that Touken Ranbu Warriors has jumped right to the top of the Japanese multiformat charts, selling 113.159 copies in its debut week.
It's one of seven Switch games in the top ten, which, rather unusually, features three Sony titles (well, two if you could Horizon Forbidden West's PS4 and PS5 versions as the same game). The other new entry is SNK's The King of Fighters XV.
- [NSW] Touken Ranbu Warriors (Koei Tecmo, 2022.02.17) – 113.159 (NEW)
- [NSW] Pokemon Legends: Arceus (Pokemon Co., 2022.01.28) – 84.925
- [PS4] Horizon Forbidden West (Sony Interactive Entertainment, 2022.02.18) – 48.476 (NEW)
- [PS5] Horizon Forbidden West (Sony Interactive Entertainment, 2022.02.18) – 43.012 (NEW)
- [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo, 2017.04.28) – 13.406
- [NSW] Mario Party Superstars (Nintendo, 2021.10.29) – 10.651
- [NSW] Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo, 2018.12.07) – 9.268

- [NSW] Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl (Pokemon Co., 2021.11.19) – 6.876
The Switch remains Japan's best-selling system, but the PS5 creeps above the Switch Lite into third place. The figures below are sales for the past week, with lifetime sales in brackets.
- Switch OLED Model – 59,161 (1,245,652)

Welcome back SONY.
There's a funny thing going on with the Xbox series X numbers there lol. Looks like they sold quite a bit.
Is this Japan only game?
How much did Horizon Zero Dawn made at it's launch in Japan back in 2017?
A warrior game and a month old game both outselling Playstation biggest first party game this year (on two platforms) perfectly shows how irrelevant Sony is becoming in their home country.
Xbox Series X – 1,9636
Typo I guess.
@wanghosom Tbf if you combine the PS4 and PS5 sales then HFW outsold PLA (but not by much)
Oof, Horizon (new debut) barely beat out Pokemon (week 4 sales). That's embarrassing
How in the world does Koei Tecmo has the time to develop that many musou games?!
@NinChocolate No, it's coming to the west as well
How hilarious is it that in Japan, a simple Warriors rehash is selling more than Horizon which has a budget at least a dozen times higher?
I don't know much about Touken Ranbu Warriors, but looks like it has some good husbandos.
Odd to see a fighting game in the top 10 for once. Betcha SNK really wish they made a Switch version of KOFXV then it would had sold a lot up there. It's too bad it won't be up there for long as the game wasn't that good compare to their past 2D entries.
@Axecon Not really. Pokemon is one of the biggest franchises of all time in Japan whereas Horizon is a Western-developed action-adventure title. Not exactly an apples to apples comparison.
Good to see KOF XV made the top 10. I've been enjoying it so far. But then I love SNK fighting games..
Those King of Fighters XV sales are bad right? How much does the series usually sell?
Welp this actually kicks Touken Ranbu Musou off my wish list. Doesn’t look like my cup of tea. Excited for KoF though.
A Japanese game sells more than a Western one in Japan? well I never.
@CowCatcher it's hugely unpopular in Japan. I remember when they pulled the XBOX One from the shelves it was selling less than twenty units a week.
Really want to preorder a UK copy. Highly jealous of Japan's limited edition.
@lolwhatno The Steam Deck is not available in Japan yet. Probably won't be for a long time. A few of my known Japanese friends does know about it but says they won't be able to order it cause it's only available for the west. A few of those do say they already got portable PCs over there already like GPD Win 3 and AYA Neo but mostly use those for personal or business purpose like watching videos and email, vlogging and stuff, I believe you can't play emulators (or device that had or run emulators) in Japan cause the country had a very harsh anti-piracy law over there. Even if you own a phone you can't download emulators on it. The only few exceptions is if you bought a product that came with emulator and games already built-in such as a Genesis Mini or a Super NES Classic Edition and had no online connectivity.
@Troll_Decimator Touken Ranbu is very popular in Japan.
Wow. Touken Ranbo cleaning house.
Those KoF sales aren't looking good.
I'm surprised KoFXV wasn't released on Switch tbh.
Wow it's been ages since I seen more than 1 Playstation game on the Japanese charts.
@GrailUK The Saudi prince probably had a thing against Nintendo cause ever since he bought SNK no new SNK games are coming to Switch.
Third party Otome series musou spin-off on Switch beating new Horizon game PS4/PS5 combined is hilarious. Even Pokémon legends with the weeks it has been out for numbers comparable to new Horizon launch with PS4/PS5 combined. New Horizon game got a drop compared to first game which was 117k range.
KoF XV flopped. A mainline new entry got SNK Heroine numbers. It’s not even because they ignored the Switch, but because KoF XV is probably the least casual audience friendly fighter. There is not much to do in that game but play online since the single player is a joke that has less to do then XIV. It reminds me of the SFV launch which was also horrible
@lolwhatno Steam Deck won’t even be available in Japan among other regions. One of the many many many reasons why the Steam deck won’t be a mainstream gaming device with their niche target audience.
@RubyCarbuncle
A 3rd party otome series spin-off musou beating a major sequel Sony first party IP? Cmon now let’s not pretend this was Mario vs a niche western indie
@Rob3008 Also one of Sony’s modern core first parties where previous game accumulated over 20 million+ sales that got a ton of marketing including in Genshin Impact that a lot of Japanese play so it’s not exactly a literal who niche series either . It shouldn’t be too much of an order to beat a month old release of legends on launch.
FYI the first game got 117k sales on launch in Japan. That would have been more then enough to beat Legends. So the “Pokémon is too good” excuse doesn’t fly in this scenario.
@Tom-Smo well over 100k. Despite some people insisting “this was good for Horizon in Japan” it’s a fact it did notably worse then the previous game. I don’t expect much legs either if it’s only 40k a platform.
@Specter_of-the_OLED Ow yeah, I forgot about that. Mind you...we did get card fighters. So he can't be all that bad
Sony dominating the chaRts, as yousual.
Well Horizon is a western game. Its pretty decent. We're all gamers above all and competition is good for everyone. I like all platforms to sell well.
