Let's face it, it'll take something pretty special to take Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's crown as the best kart racer on Switch, but if you're looking for something on the significantly cheaper end of the scale, Racing Karts has just drifted onto the eShop.
Available for just $4.99 / £4.49, the game features three modes (Arcade, Championship, and Time Trial), five tracks, customisable karts, and splitscreen multiplayer for up to four local players. Its eShop listing notes that the game's "easy to learn but hard to master", with drifting and boosting required to maximise your speed around each circuit.
Here's a selection of screenshots:

I won't judge the generic look of this game but if it could deliver that smooth 60fps in 720p or 1080p HD without stuttering then this would be the best budget friendly kart racing game ever. Virtua Racing on Switch is awesome but the stuttering of the screen gets annoying and M2 never fix it.
for $5 it certainly looks like one could do worse. a price like that definitely tempers expectations a bit, which is a good thing.
Does every new piece of Switch shovelware really warrant a news article now?
Looking at this game I'll hard pass.
This game looks like it belongs on the PS2 as well as being one of the most generic things I ever seen, don't care if it's $5.
This game being one penny less than 5 dollars, doesn’t really make me feel like it’s less than 5 dollars. It feels more like, I dunno… 5 dollars. And it looks like a ‘ya get what you pay for’ situation.
I think you forgot the "Sponsored Article" tag
Needs at least 2-5 more tracks. Otherwise a 5 dollar kart racer with these modes is intriguing.
@Realness I really hate that 9-based marketing trick ($.99, 900 yen, etc) to make it technically less than the rounded-up number.
Lots of good racing already on Switch (which I'm happy about!)
@cmdrmarc it's been happening a lot on here recently hasn't it?
@HollowSpectre @cmdrmarc you’re both missing the point of the article. It’s something new, and surprisingly cheap, that can actually hold it’s own when pitted against Mario Kart. If you want something new to play local multiplayer with something that is actually worthy of your time, try it.
We all want a new Mario Kart because, let’s face it, it’s getting a tad stale for those of us who’ve had it for the Switch’s lifespan. Some of us even on Wii U which is years upon years…
The article is stating, “here! Something worthy of your time and money and is actually (as) fun.”
@ChromaticDracula but they don't say that at all. They don't offer their opinion, they only quote the eshop description page. Feels very much sponsored.
@Blackrosewaifu9000 I love this game, except for the story mode that requires you to do boring stuff like drifting, ring challenge and stuff that isn't racing solo or with a team.
come on seen better on the amiga
Janky framerate and looks like janky controls, if the YT video I just watched is a good indicator. Hard pass and honestly, using two very generic keywords as the title of your game is really just asking Google and everyone else to practically never show people your game unless they search for it in quotes and remove "Mario" from the query, lol. Pretty basic marketing knowledge that went over the dev's head(s).
Is it any good?
Well, I had 5 quid left on the eShop so it is now downloading. Let’s see what it’s like shall we. I shall pop back later and let you know whether this is worth a look or just a bit of ‘CB’
Only one way to find out..
@Dethmunk Yes the arcade does had the shakeness of the camera but it doesn't stutter that much. On the Sega Ages version if you try to do a corner drift and rapidly press Acceleration the viewpoint stutter up and down, in the arcade it doesn't do that. All it does was shake the camera but doesn't stutter the viewpoint like that, on Switch the stutter makes the image move up and down which was super annoying. The only way to prevent that was to hold the acceleration most of the time but then I wouldn't be able to do a good corner drift in the game.
Okay…..so it’s one of those games that you don’t need to play for too long! You can’t change the button mapping which is a pain as the accelerator has to be ZR and R is drift. Now, I say drift - it is basically a bit like Mario Kart’s drift where you jump but that’s where the similarity ends. When you drift you fill your boost bar and then press L to boost. The graphics are basic but not the worst I have ever seen and if you can sort your fingers out there is some fun here and there. I’ve played through a few arcade laps and even a ‘Time Trail.’ And yes I did write Trail’. No trials here it’s all about the trails. Made me laugh.
I have actually played worse games and the fact it’s a few quid is neither here nor there because it’s just what it is and and you are better playing Outrun Sega Ages or Horizon Chase Turbo.
I will still have a further play through and do a review for my site but early impressions would lead me to think it’s going to be a 4/10 at best.
@Pigeon You don’t actually drift you just bounce in the air sideways. A bit like MK. Actually nothing like MK but is all I got.
Have played it a bit more and it’s kind of fun really. It should be free as paying for it seems a bit much but there is a bit of a retro charm to it. It’s fun, it’s okay.
@jarvismp Friendly reminder that the Switch has a button remapping feature in the OS settings and thanks for the review!
Since when the people is worry for graphics in UHD, 1080p, or 4k in a simple (indy) little game?, Oh wait ...
Looks interesting.
