Remember earlier this month, when the ESA announced that E3 would once again be ditching its physical event for 2022? Well, things might be even more gloomy than we originally thought.
The Entertainment Software Association's statement, released just days after the turn of the year, explained that E3 2022 wouldn't go ahead as a physical event thanks to the ongoing health risks caused by COVID-19. "We are nonetheless excited about the future of E3 and look forward to announcing more details soon," the message said.
The statement stopped short of confirming whether or not a digital-only event, as we've become accustomed to at this point, would be returning for 2022 in its place, but VentureBeat journalist Jeff Grubb believes that this has "probably" also been cancelled. While nothing's been confirmed either way just yet, it's hard not to be concerned given Grubb's impressive track record with games industry scoops.
Here's what he had to say speaking on Tiktok:
"E3's been cancelled. Well, physically it's been cancelled, digitally probably also cancelled."
Naturally, we'll make sure to update you with any news directly from the ESA as soon as we hear more. Of course, we will still have Geoff Keighley's never-ending parade of broadcasts and reveals thanks to Summer Game Fest 2022.

What I don't want to see is Nintendo effectively cancelling a Nintendo Direct and instead, shadow-dropping announcements that get spoiled faster than you can even hear the video start.
Cancelling a remote E3 would be a bit extreme. Although they certainly aren't as good as normal ones.
Hopefully Nintendo would just take their portion and have some type of their own Direct instead.
Honestly? Good.
E3 has long since devolved into a series of AAA advertising, and has become outdated and outmoded in an era of publishers providing their own "direct" style of video press releases.
You shouldn't always believe what you hear, especially on TikTok...
Good, especially if it was going to be anything like last year's catastrophic E3.
The big devs should just have their own direct style events throughout the year
Honestly so long as Nintendo still hosts a Direct at that time, and hopefully a tree house as well, I couldn't really care much less about E3 as a whole being canceled.
@CharlieGirl E3 was always a "AAA" advertising event. It was an industry tradeshow. That's it's actual purpose, always was.... The only difference was when it went from a closed show for retail/investement/media to a internet-televised fan festival. But it was always about the big companies promoting their biggest products.
A lot of us enjoyed the festival aspect and celebration of the games and platforms, though.
@ModdedInkling prosafiagaming on his way to leak the entirety of the new wario land game including levels and bosses and spoil them all in a single thumbnail somehow 10 seconds after the trailer drops
And Nintendo are probably going bankrupt... there is no source to back up what this journalist is saying, so why use him as a source? He's just putting his own thoughts out. This article is pointless... journalists also said that Twilight Princess HD and Wind Waker HD would "definitely" release last year. They're just people, with thoughts. A good track record means absolutely nothing here unless you think the guy is genuinely psychic, which is of course ridiculous
Is Geoff Grubb and Nintendolife an item or something?
E3 for me has lost all reason to care, it's just another nintendo direct at this point surrounded by people complaining about things other than nintendo.
@NEStalgia Yeah this. Saying it's become a AAA advertising venture is to ignore it's history.
I think it would be a shame to see E3 go. It provides a solid base for the Big 3 to try and outdo each other within a condensed 5 day timeframe or so. It also guarantees discussion. Who honestly doesn't get a kick out of watching the conferences then discussing/arguing with friends about "who won?". It would be disappointing to see it go.
As long as there is a Direct around June I don't care.
Last year the Nintendo Direct was the only interesting presentation anyway (perhaps beside Microsoft but I don't even own an XBox)
E3 is obsolete. Over the last ~10 years it became more and more corporate cringe. The Nintendo Direct format is waaaayyy better.
I couldn't care less if it were cancelled honestly. I'm only interested in the Nintendo presentation anyway and they'll always do their own Direct sooner or later regardless so makes no difference to me.
@CharlieGirl @NEStalgia
E3 was also a venue for publishers, developers, platform holders, and other companies to hold meetings and strike deals or partnerships. It was definitely more than just a marketing event.
It's fine if it is. Last year's E3 left such a bad taste in my mouth that I wouldn't really care. Especially considering Nintendo gives us info dumps on that month anyway.
As many others said, all I need is a Nintendo direct around that time and I'll be fine 👍
E3 is dead again? Must be an even numbered year. Or is it odd number? E3 has had more lives than a cat, time to let it die once and for all. Then 2 years later GK can name his thing 3E or something. I'm not a fan of the man but he's obviously more successful than whoever is running E3.
How many other game expos are there in other countries? Plus Sony does its thing, Nintendo Directs, MS does whatever. E3 is done, just end it, blame it on covid or whatever, it's over. Again. For the fifth time. Kind of bored of the repetition.
If 2020's anything to go by, Nintendo may not do a June Nintendo Direct if E3 is cancelled again. Honestly Nintendo announcing the Kirby release date out of nowhere last week casts doubt on whether there'll be a Nintendo Direct in February/March.
Pity. I enjoyed E3 last year. How hard could it possibly be for them to arrange a set of streams versus the usual trade show? Especially when viewership was decent last year.
Many of the bigger companies aren't even attending the event anyways so yeah it may as well be cancel. Sony was not even there last time, Nintendo skipped on it a few times, Microsoft doesn't care no matter what, and most of the third parties doesn't really give a damn either. Some could just do digital announcements on the week of the event anyways.
@Grumblevolcano The first proper Bowser’s Fury trailer released on the exact same date last year, I believe, and we still got a February direct.
Fine with me. The only good thing about E3 last year was the Nintendo Direct, and Nintendo can have a Direct whenever they feel like. They don’t need E3 for that.
@Munchlax We did get the release date in September 2020 and the February Direct came the week after Bowser's Fury launch though. If there was a Direct close to Legends Arceus launch, I'm sure they would've saved the Kirby trailer for the Direct to give more attention to Legends Arceus.
I don't care as long as Nintendo has a Direct in June.
@LunarFlame17 Yeah, but E3 gives us a concrete date. Otherwise we're all up in the air on when the next conference will happen. We all remember 2020 where it never happened ever. =(
@NEStalgia "E3 was always a 'AAA' advertising event. It was an industry tradeshow. That's it's actual purpose, always was..."
Well, all the better then.
As usual, I take things like this with a load of salt until it's confirmed otherwise.
Is it necessary anymore? Game developers are capable of doing their own announcements
I really don't want to have shadow drops, and E3 is the only event where we gamer's know we'er getting news, I mean sure they can always do there own events, but those are just randomly placed throughout the year, and we have no real idea when we're going to get one, So TBH, It would suck to see it go, and wile it wouldn't be a big blow, we might see a slow in game announcement's, that and nintendo shadow dropping things so all people do is skip to the end spoiling everything else.
I’m sure they say this in January every year!
Bottom line is Nintendo and Sony do their own thing and it’s more of a show for the others and Xbox. As I don’t care about the others and Xbox, I’m very happy to see this go! And we can just tune in to digital streams for producers we want to see.
E3 2022 rebranded as nft announcement streams 2022!
@Harmonie True but 2020 was the beginning of the pandemic, and obviously Nintendo, for whatever reason, struggled more than most video game companies to adapt to the changed circumstances. At this point it seems like they’ve gotten more used to how things are, and I expect we’ll get a summer Direct this year, even if we won’t know ahead of time when it’s going to be.
Didn’t the ESA say they had e3 plans to reveal earlier this month for later? I call BS on yhis until the ESA confirms it.
I really enjoyed what there was of E3 last year. For where the industry is right now it was decent. Nintendo and MS had good shows. Squeenix was Squeenix. Sony's still alone in the corner. It would have been nicer to have more shows and events, but what was possible was good. Capcom's was the hardest one to watch.
@CharlieGirl So basically "I only like indie games therefore I don't care about E3, therefore it shouldn't exist?"
@rjejr Keighley is a glorified youtuber and nothing more. He can do what he does because he just sells his brand and gathers his following, without the baggage of being a large industry group pleasing its membership. But it also makes it more vacuous. He's just some schmuck putting on a show. ESA is the actual industry group, lobby arm, general PR wing of the whole industry, and all the members pay into it.
Bottom line remains E3 gave a set of days 1 week a year, scheduled, to tune in for an update from most gaming companies. It was something we could set our calendars to and all synchronize on what's coming in the future. Keighley's show and everyone else's individual streams, if there's 100 individual random events throughout the year, there may as well be zero. I'm not going to know about them, I'm not going to remember them, and I'm not going to piecemeal a calendar to track them all. That may reach the twitter kiddies just fine, but working folks can't just randomly tune in to dozens of random announcements the way a week of scheduled events works. If Keighley can make his event work over 3-5 days, great. If he drags it out over 12+ weeks again, he can get lost.
@CharlieGirl Yeah but other events like Summer Game's fest and the VGA's sort of do the same thing.
We'll never go back to the times when game trailers showed actual gameplay early on and weren't just a teaser for an announcement of when a game was going to be shown off.
Add to the fact that there are a lot of forced politics pushed at these events, and you can see why most people view that these types of events have changed for the worst.
@westman98 Very true, the in-person event had that. In that aspect the tradeshow/expo format in general (not just E3) has had a bit of a permanent decline for a long time just based on business expenses and other avenues of business. But that's certainly one aspect, and the least public-facing aspect of the show. Otherwise it was originally conceived as an expo for the industry to meet with retailers to line up their upcoming US holiday sales expectations with a retail industry that was still uneasy about video games, and a marketing too through the invited press to cover the upcoming holiday "toys."
if E3 2022 is cancelled, does it means we can't expect information regarding Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 at the event?that disapointing, i was expecting information regarding Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 at E3 2022.
Years ago I would have been really sad to hear this but with the way things are now the more I think about I’m not sure how much this changes.
Any game company that wants to put out a digital presentation in the summer is going to do it whether or not there’s a formal E3 to attach it to, Nintendo included. There’s also the separate show for Indies around the same time. It just doesn’t feel like cancelling digital E3 changes much when the companies don’t need E3 to present digitally themselves.
that disapointing, i was expecting information regarding Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild 2.
@NEStalgia um, I think you're the one who's getting lost old man, vacuous youtubers are the big thing now. 😉 Trump became President from being a reality tv star. All anyone cares about is who's dating Pete Davidison and the K sisters. Head honchos at IBM wish they had the appeal of Mark Cuban and Musk. The future is social media influencers. And yes we are all doomed, not by mediocrity but by vapid stupidity - I don't even now what Logan Paul is but I know that he is - so yeah, GK over ESA. NFTs over Picassos, bitcoin over gold, meta over nature. Humankind is doomed. And not fake Nintendo doomed but actual HG Wells Morlocks are eating the Eloi doomed doomed.
So, uh...why, exactly? Even if he has a good track record, just saying "Digital E3 is cancelled too" isn't much to go on.
I would be genuinely disappointed if (big if) this turns out to be true. I also think the industry would suffer. It’s a focal point for the year and also attracts mainstream media attention.
Ok, only Nintendo and Xbox turned up last year, but it’s always hit and miss. That’s part of the fun, and it will be sorely missed IMO.
If we get a Nintendo Direct I don’t care too much, but for years for better or worse E3 has allowed for gaming to have a center so that you can hear all the latest news. A lot more gaming related-stuff is going to fly under the radar for me in E3’s absence, and that’s kind of a shame.
@rjejr I think I need to buy an NFT revolver to shoot my Meta-self with.
I truly cannot comprehend any of that dismal reality. Or how it could even come to be. I see any youtuber and think "how does this even exist? Who would even like this?" And then you see that people do and it's just....how? It's not even about young and old, it's now about completely illogical versus some shred of sanity. This isn't the result of "young minds" it's the result of what happens when 2 entire generations are raised in an imaginary world and then try to connect that to reality.
You could say "that's just crotchety old guy yelling at clouds" but the world is literally falling down around us.....hard to be proven wrong here....
E3 died when they got rid of Booth Babes!
In the digital age E3 is kind of pointless.
@LunarFlame17 Certainly the pandemic effected Nintendo's 2020 hard. I doubt we'll see another year like that without Directs, but perhaps I shouldn't have brought up 2020. It's kind of aside from my point what caused Nintendo to never give us a full Direct then.
What I mean is that E3 gives us a solid release for information. Not just from Nintendo, but from all kinds of companies. Unless all companies decide to simultaneously release their conferences like a spiritual E3, it's just not the same. We no longer have that reassurance of "they haven't shown much of anything this year, but at least we know that they will have to at E3."
I disagree with those who say it has no value in the digital world. Perhaps I am just being old-fashioned here, IDK.
Not surprising. My guess is that the event is too expensive and they're not recouping any of the costs in a digital event.
Honestly after disappointment for majority of E3 last year couldn't care less just as long nintendo direct is still happening
@Harmonie I see what you’re saying, but I kinda feel like last year’s E3 disproves your point. Most of the presentations felt unnecessary, like the companies only made a presentation because they had to, because it was E3. Maybe if we don’t have a certain time of year when companies “have to” announce things, we’ll get better announcements, released when the companies have something to announce, not just because it’s E3 time.
Or maybe I’m just trying to look on the bright side. I’ve always loved E3, but it felt like a shadow of its former self even before the pandemic, and last year’s showing was, frankly, pathetic. I’d rather it die completely than limp along the way it has been.
@LunarFlame17 Well, I can see the value of your viewpoint. I still would prefer that we get those for-sure presentations once a year. Do other companies (aside from Sony) even do Nintendo Direct type presentations? Or do they shadow drop stuff?
@NEStalgia Ignorance is bliss. And I do think there's a reason so many states are legalizing marijuana now, to deal w/ the stupid. And whoever Ryan is? Do we blame Honey Boo Boo for Ryan? I did watch a lot of Maury Povich in the 90's so I suppose I'm partly to blame.
" Whitney Matheson wrote about the show in her USA Today column, "Povich's talk show is, without a doubt, the worst thing on television. Period. Don't be fooled by the pressed shirt and pleated khakis; Maury is miles farther down the commode than Jerry Springer."[6]"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maury_(talk_show)
He was better than Springer though, hands down, that lady is just flat out wrong. 😁
Sorry no NFTs but I did find you this. Archie was a racist, sexist, homophobe, but he at least knew we were all doomed. 🤷♂️
@Harmonie Square Enix does it every few months.
@rjejr Isn't legalizing pot to deal with stupid like releasing rats to deal with the mouse problem?
Or is that what elections are? Can't remember.
Wow, Maury... There's a thing I haven't remembered or intentionally forgot for decades! Never thought he was worse than Springer though. Springer is just Howard Stern with less cool factor and a camera crew.
Archie.... We should have made him emperor. I know he's fictional. So are all our other leaders, so why not?
@Funneefox
I'll do you one better. BeardBear leaking all of Age of Calamity cutscenes -10 seconds after the trailer releases.
Nintendo doesn't need E3 to hype us up, a Nintendo Direct will do exactly that. Besides is probably mostly just Indie Games and maybe some Bethesda release, I doubt there is much happening for Xbox and Playstation that would be released between now and next year.
Normal people look forward to the Super Bowl.
I look forward to E3. I take time off of work to binge watch the entire conference every year. Basically E3 and the Game Awards are the big shows of the year for me, with the occasional Nintendo Direct in-between at irregular intervals and with less than 48 hours of notice. I really hope we don't skip E3 again this year. I actually prefer the digital E3 because the show is more focused and not diluted with so many cringe stage skits with more focus on the actual games.
Hopefully not, because if so we might have to wait untill very late in the year before we finally get a new Zelda trailer and some information. Possibly pretty close before release (holiday 2022).
@Harmonie "...We all remember 2020..."
I barely remember 2020 and 2021 Oo
This pandemic is really starting to reshape everything now, isn't it?
@NEStalgia Missed one, sorry.
I view legalizing mj as "Happy hour: All day, every day, and you don't have to leave your house!". munchies > hangover
Having Trump as President was kinda like having Archie as Emperor. I tell people the only difference between my dad and Trump is my grandfather didn't give my dad $400 million. Trump was born about 8 months earlier and they were both raised in Queens. Not as much of a delineation between my dad and Archie. And I grow more like my dad every day. I'll probably be a republican by the time I'm old(er). Course all of the current republicans will be fascist Trumpsters who have no clue what it meant to be a republican so I'll still be anathema to them.
I'd like to clarify my previous comment about Maury Povitch. I never actually watched his show, I watched his previous show before that "A Current Affair" which ran from 1986-1990. It was actually more of a "news" show, not a reality tv show. It was possibly Pandora's box for TV though. Here's Maury being not too humble about it.
@rjejr I remember A Current Affair. Dang, that was the 80's? I don't remember it being that long ago. Seems like maybe 20 years ago. I vaguely remember it was Povich and his transition to gossip trash. I suppose if anything that proves that "news" and "gossip trash" are in fact the same thing, and that's not a post-internet phenomenon.....
My new goal in life is to be there when rjejr becomes a NY Republican. It'll be like the Hunger Games with a Switch! Personally I think the "parties" are just two different groups of hypocrites who just do the opposite of what the other does for no purpose but to spite each other at this point. It's like children that don't actually believe what they say, they just want to be on the opposite side of their parents and if that means convincing themselves they can breathe underwater, so be it. Neither side actually has a position they just take whatever position is the opposite of the other side's position even if the other side now agrees with what previously was their own position. As the old quote goes "I was for it before I was against it"
@Scapetti are you really being this absurd? Jeff Grubb is one of the leading industry insiders. He doesn’t just say stuff, he has vetted sources telling him. People like you trying to discredit Grubb is an absolute joke.
E3 is a worthless event if its not in person, because it isn't making the vast sums of money it did pre covid, and is a pretty crap show overall. Frankly, Summer Games fest is an all around better show. E3 is done. Hopefully for good.
