Masahiro Sakurai was able to complete Super Smash Bros. Ultimate this year, but from here on out, it's not clear what's next.
Although he's apparently not thinking about a new Smash Bros. entry right now, that doesn't mean he'll rule it out. He's also not even sure about his future in video game development, but would likely remain within the industry in some way or form.
Now, in a more recent interview with 4Gamer, Sakurai has shared a bit of an update - advising fans to forget about him for a while (in other words - stop asking what's next), because if he does do anything else, whatever it is will likely take some time.
Here's the full quote, courtesy of a translation by Kody Nokolo:
"Doing anything else is going to take some time, so it's probably best to forget about me for a while."
While this might worry some, it's not the first time we've heard something like this from a Japanese developer. When Platinum's Hideki Kamiya was getting a large volume of questions about Bayonetta 3 he also told fans to just forget about it.
Sakurai is rather active on social media, so if you are curious to see what he's up to, you can always visit his Twitter page. In recent times he purchased an Xbox Series X and has also shown interest in the GOTY title, It Takes Two.
What would you like to see next from Sakurai? A new game, another Smash, something else? Comment below.

Enjoy your life, man.
He can bring fighting to Meteos
Good luck and take care 🙂. Hope we see you again one day.
Take your time Sakurai-san. Burnout is a beast. But no one's forgetting you any time soon. Your mark on video games is indelible. 👏
@NinChocolate speaking of Meteos, that DS game should have a second chance on the Switch or something.
We'll never forget, Sakurai-san. What a legend.
So what you're saying is, we are getting a new Smash next year that's even bigger than Ultimate and we should all keep asking about it. Got it!
@SSGodLink I can already hear the virtual slap Sakurai is about to give you for that comment. lol
I agree, you'd think this guy was an A list celebrity with how often anything he even thinks is reported as news.
Previously, Sakurai went quiet from the launch of the final Smash Bros 3DS/Wii U DLC in December 2015 until the reveal of Smash Bros for Switch in March 2018, so it seems like he may be in the pre-pruduction phase of his next project(s) soon.
🎶 don't you, forget about me 🎶
Kid Icarus for Switch please!!…then I can forget about Sakurai for awhile
All right I will!
Get you some much needed rest Mashed Potato
Sorry this site is unable to do that. They feel that somehow it's their duty to stalk the poor guy.
We can leave him alone, question is can Nintendo?
Never heard of him.
Forget about him..... I forgot about him ages ago.
No one is more deserving of a resssst. And all the effort in the world would have gone to waste until...
"While this might worry some"
Nobody who's sane, surely. All he's saying is to move on to other things because there's nothing from him in the immediate future.
for Arceus sake, give Sakurai some rest, he deserve some well deserved vacantion after Super Smash Bros Ultimate.
He’s a workaholic so if he’s not already working on something, he’ll probably be soon. Though maybe in a different capacity.
Everyone chill he’s not dead.

Vacation well earned, Sakurai-san.
It's gonna be 4-8 years before we properly hear from Sakurai again but seems like he's already preparing for his next big project
I’m a huge Kirby fan. I could never forget about Sakurai! He directed some of my favorite games ever. Though I respect his desire for peace and some more privacy, I will remember.
I look forward to Kid Icarus: Uprising Deluxe Edition for Switch in a year or two.
Rest in pepperoni 🍕 ⚰️
He obviously needs rest, to be left alone (or in nothing but company of his choice), time off, indefinite vacation. I completely understand that, and respect that. Now, if only saying you wanted to be forgotten about for a while didn't end up getting an article written about it with your picture and everything, that could help...
Probably his next game will be his last. And probably it will be something of a personal project, something he thinks he deserves a new chance. Probably a new rebirth of a dead nintendo franchise or something totally new and experimental. Who knows.
Mach Rider Uprising, anyone?
so when is the next smash coming out then?
He can remain Forgotten in his Land for a few months. 😁
Can't wait to play the new Kirby.
No one deserves a rest more than him. Personally, I'd love to see him go back to the Kirby and or Kid Icarus series in a few years. Uprising is one of my fave games on the 3DS and I'd love to see more in the future.
I wish I could but it's too hard seeing his mug every other week on here.
Ya'll are weird.
Sakurai politely begging people to finally stop worshipping him like some kind of cult.
@NinChocolate Meteos... Sweet sweet memories!
Sakurai Thinks It's Probably Best To Forget About Him For A While... and then @nintendolife immediately goes and disrespects his wishes by publishing this article. 🙄🤦♂️
@shani He said this in an interview intended for public consumption and dissemination. I don't think he meant it literally. 😄
The man deserves some R&R. As the creator of Kirby and the master(hand) of Smash, there's not many creators I support more
Didn't he spend the last 3 years directing a team on how to code just 11 DLC characters? I'm not saying it's an easy job but how grueling could that have been considering all the work it must take to code 50+ characters for a new game in the same amount of time? I feel like maybe he's been doing just fine lately, the pleas for him to get rest seem a bit silly though I do agree after Ultimate Deluxe on the the Super Switch he should be allowed to rest on his laurels if he so chooses.
