Chrono Trigger is held up as a truly iconic RPG, critically acclaimed and with an ardent fanbase even today. Its soundtrack is held in equally high regard, so an announcement out of Square Enix Japan has certainly got our attention.
As reported by Siliconera, Square Enix is releasing a Chrono Trigger jazz arrangement album, the fifth in that particular series. At present it's opened up for pre-orders in Japan ahead of its release on 26th January.
Square Enix has a rather enjoyable thing about jazzing up its classic soundtracks (the video above is from a Tokyo Game Show performance), and there's perhaps some hope we'll get this in the West at some point. Some of the previous jazz albums have gone on sale globally, while Square Enix does have a handful of classic soundtracks available on streaming services like Spotify.
Hopefully that'll be the case with this one, below are the tracks that will be included.
- “Peaceful Days”
- “Frog’s Theme”
- “Lavos’ Theme”
- “Robo’s Theme”
- “The Brink of Time”
- “Battle with Magus”
- “Schala’s Theme”
- “Chrono and Marle ~Far Off Promise~”
- “World Revolution”
- “Outskirts of Time”
- “Chrono Trigger”
Would you buy this soundtrack if it was released globally? Let us know, as always, in the comments.

those are some very good song choices for a jazz ensemble.
We need Chrono Trigger sequel in pixel art

Chrono Trigger has some incredible music and jazz renditions will probably be just lovely.
Square Enix is a joke publisher now that they rather scam their fanbase for more money than to give them what they want. We had been asking for a Chrono sequel for consoles since forever and what did they give us, mobile games and more free-to-play garbage.
Legendary game & game music from Square's glory days. I still listen to these classic melodies from time to time.
If only we could get a new Chrono Trigger/Cross (or even the mysterious Chrono Break) game now.
... Wun can only hope.
Alright, I'm listening. :3
It's the video game soundtrack I listen to the most. I've heard some jazz covers. Some of them are good and some of them not so good. I'd give this a listen but oftentimes in these cases the fan stuff is better than the official stuff.
On the topic of a Chrono Trigger/Cross sequel/remake, I'm personally in the no camp. I would like to see it brought to modern consoles in its most original form possible and that's all I'd trust Square to be able to do. Everyone who worked on it has moved on. It was a rare moment and I don't think they can recapture that.
It seems like this would be so simple to release on digital platforms globally. So alas, I do not expect it to happen.
Square Enix, if you are releasing an album for Chrono Trigger why not PORT Chrono Trigger to Nintendo Switch and other platforms
@Specter_of-the_OLED we have also been asking for Chrono Trigger to hit modern consoles as well.
Remember when Square Enix USED to be good?
Nice! Loved the Fast Show.
The idea of Lavos' theme there makes me chuckle, destroy the planet to some nice smooth jazz, oh yeah.
Truly doubt anything will surpass that old "The Brink of Time" album, but I'm always happy to see Chrono Trigger and Jazz coming together.
@rushiosan @CactusMan I love the Brink of Time album... It was one I randomly stumbled upon 15 years ago when I found one "chrono trigger jazz" track and listened to just that for a few years before discovering that it was form an official album. I also did not realise that the To Far Away Times CD was from 1995!
chrono cross is the better soundtrack 😎 id love some CC jazz.
I never really liked jazz and what I heard in the video doesn't change my mind. I'll skip this for sure.
This is my #1 game and OST so heck yeah, gimme it.
It's not jazz, but Square Enix had a performance called Symphonic Fantasies in 2009 that had some epic arrangements of Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, and Final Fantasy. I highly recommend checking it out: https://www.gameconcerts.com/en/concerts/symphonic-fantasies/
"Would you buy this soundtrack if it was released glob-"
YES.
I want this on iTunes like yesterday.
Don't know why they didn't mention this, but the release date is January 26th 2022 ("2022年01月26日"). I already like this album, yet I never heard it yet (due to it not being released yet).
@ValZ January 26th you mean... And it's written in the article
@mazzel Oop, sorry, fixing now.
Me: .....what? A ***** Chrono CROSS remake? That game felt like it wasn't even meant to be part of the Chronoverse and got shoehorned in. Is TRIGGER at least getting something new?
Squenix: Jazz hands!
