Update [Wed 1st Dec, 2021 02:00 GMT]: The update for Shantae and the Seven Sirens has arrived. WayForward has released a small trailer alongside it. And you can learn more over on the official game website.
Original story [Wed 17th Nov, 2021 02:00 GMT]: Well, here's a nice surprise, Shantae's latest adventure - Shantae and the Seven Sirens is getting a "spectacular superstar" update. This is a free content update that will arrive later this month on 30th November.
It will feature a range of new modes - Definitive Mode, Full Deck Mode, Rule Breaker Mode, and Beginner Mode:
Definitive Mode: A more challenging “director’s cut” that features classic Shantae difficulty, with rebalanced item drops and magic consumption, as well as more-intense boss fights and new dialog with the Sirens before each battle.
Full Deck Mode: Definitive Mode with a twist. Start with all 50 Monster Cards to customize Shantae’s abilities to your liking.
Rule Breaker Mode: Definitive Mode without limits. You can equip up to 50 Monster Cards at once to gain ultimate power.
Beginner Mode: Definitive Mode made simple. This easy mode makes it impossible to lose! Perfect for newcomers or those who just want to explore the world and enjoy the story.
There'll also be a Legacy Mode on offer, to allow players to experience the title in its original and unaltered form. and an unlockable Hula Costume (giving players a powerful magic upgrade at the cost of lower defense). This costume will be usable across all modes, as long as the player has completed the game at least once.
Some other bonus enhancements as part of this update (across all modes) include improved dialog, map markers, and hints which can be toggled on or off.

Is this update for all platforms including ios? Thats were im playing it atm
I'm slowly working my way through all the Shantae games on Switch. Nice to see an unexpected update; its a fun series.
Sounds like they took the criticism of the game into account. Will definitely be replaying it to see if this fixes the issues I had with it.
Whoa now that a pretty good amount of content.
I'd love for this to have a substantial sale eventually.
I have the physical version of this, and this is very unexpected! But definitely a welcome surprise.
Very nice update
I have only play the Ps Vita one and it surprised me how good of a game it is and how long has been going this franchise and I never notice, I'll work my way around all switch games eventually
The increase difficulty is great. I've heard the game was easy which turned me off, but now I might consider it, I love the other Shantae games
A nice welcome update. I haven’t played the game in awhile but I might come back once the update drops.
So I'm confused, did they just add a difficulty select or is there actual new content being added? Is there a reason to come back to this if I already beat it and I'm not interested in replaying the game at a different difficulty setting?
@Bolt_Strike Sounds like difficulty modifiers and minor dialogue changes.
It's about time...they announced all of this like two years ago lol. I'm happy for rebalanced difficulty though. Don't get me wrong- I'm not a difficulty snob that believes every game in this genre needs to be difficult to be any good but I think Seven Sirens was kinda braindead. Hopefully this puts it somewhere on the level of Pirate's Curse which, again, wasn't the hardest game in the world but at least I had to worry about dying sometimes.
@Bolt_Strike Dialogue changes. "[R]ebalanced item drops and magic consumption," which I take to mean they're addressing the fact that the game's difficulty was trivialized by constant food item drops.
"[M]ore-intense boss fights" I take to mean they've changed the attack patterns of the bosses so they're not such pushovers and are closer in difficulty to bosses in some of the older games in the series.
They're addressing the issues a lot of people had with the difficulty balancing in the game. It's probably not going to have a lot of brand new content to see, though.
@EriXz The Vita version is pretty great! The 2D art pops on the OLED. I bet it looks great on the new Switch OLED too!
Sounds like a similar update for Half Genie Hero. More content, more reasons to play again.
Too bad they can't have these updates get shoved straight on to the game card for those who own physical copies of games.
This probably won't do much to make the map more interesting, but the update is nice even if it sadly means it's missing from the LRG physical game card.
Hopefully the "Definitive Edition" update actually makes it that much more interesting, and whilst it is good for them to include the legacy version so that remains accessible, nobody was really speedrunning the game.

How many people are speedrunning something is usually a good indication of how good or successful a game is, particular things of the Metroidvania genre.
Are there issues with the original mode to warrant this or are they just looking for alternative ways to play the game again?
The biggest issue I had with this game, after I had completed it once, was that it was just too difficult to 100% complete. I'd done it with most of the previous Shantae games, but this was too much trouble to find all the items. Hopefully the updates will help with this.
@WeltraumDreamer Absolutely . My question was legit curiosity than a complaint. I haven’t picked the game up yet (waiting for decent sale) and like to get a heads up for when I do play. Lol.
I didn't like this one or 1/2 Genie hero as much as the old ones but this gives me incentive to go back and have another go for sure.
Also...I'm still sad Shantae never got into Smash as an official fighter. 😭
I love the Shantae games, but I've held off on getting this one. $30 is kind of steep if I'm being completely honest.
@MeloMan Totally agree! I love the Shantae series, but this game has been on my wish list for the past year and I haven't seen a sale on it yet.
Still way overpriced IMO.
WayForward is just way too awesome.
The update I want is a physical release available in normal stores. Doesn't even have to be like the previous game, which was released straight as a collector's edition. Just a standard one.
Seeing the game adds things like map markers letting you know when to see the seer dance, that's helpful.
It wasn't fun using that dance on every screen trying to reveal invisible secrets, but it looks like the game is still lacking a mini-map like many modern Metroidvanias.
@Moroboshi876
Japan did get a standard retail release at least.

@RupeeClock Thanks for the heads-up, but sadly this is the "Asian" edition, which is available only in Play-Asia, meaning pricier, more dangerous when it comes to custom taxes, et cetera. If it was available in Amazon Japan that would be great. I'll be playing Pirate's Curse and Half-Genie Hero, and if in the meantime there's a retail edition of Seven Sirens, great. If that doesn't happen, then obviously I'll have to buy it digitally. Thanks!
ooo sounds like a nice way of going about it
I'm mostly interested in the new map markers and hints. I hope it fixes the issue of when I got hopelessly lost a couple times, because if you forget where someone told you to go, in some cases the characters only tell you ONE TIME in yellow text what you need to do (like in a cutscene that only happens once), and it can be incredibly easy to miss something important. After that happened to me, I remember I had to screenshot whenever someone gave me an objective in yellow text. So hopefully this update alleviates that.
