Though it's been right there on the official website for Game & Watch: The Legend of Zelda, a few of us in the NL team hadn't clocked the fact that the nifty little device will give us access to multiple versions of each game.
In terms of the three mainline games - The Legend of Zelda, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening - you'll have access to both your localised version and the Japanese original.
It’s dangerous to go alone – take these! Revisit some of the most iconic The Legend of Zelda games with retro-inspired hardware, perfect for players and collectors alike. Play the English or Japanese versions.
The official Japanese Twitter account for the IP has shared a neat example of one difference you'll find. It highlights key soundtrack differences in Zelda II: The Adventure of Link; the question is, which do you think is better?
It's a nice little touch. So, which BGM and music do you prefer of the two above?

The only thing I was hoping for is correct aspect ratio on Link's Awakening (10:9 instead of 4:3). They stretched the whole game!
I've actually really enjoyed having the Mario 35th one around and fully want one of these. Found having a little dedicated device is a really good way of actually making me sit down and play the games properly.
Already have three of the four games on my 3DS. Moving on...
Will look nice next to the Mario game and watch
The Mario one is very cute (would love it if it had more game versions included, or was updateable) but I'm not at all bothered about Zelda. Which is a shame, as it seems like there's more included here.
I preordered for the clock. The Mario clock is a core part of my office desk.
So they make sure the two NES games don't get stretched horizontally, but they allow it to happen on the GameBoy game? Hmf.
Couldn't be more excited for this. The SMB Game and Watch being a dedicated device with no internet access did wonders for my mental health.
@riChchestM I wanted to do the same with my Mario one but two flaws in that plan - firstly it doesnt stay on so you would have to occasionally press buttons on it and secondly it didnt come with a stand either
That felt obvious to me, but probably not to others, also, Famicom Disk System audio differences. I mean, I know that I can use TCRF to look at these differences, but still, neat presentation... probably, I haven't watched the supplied videos on the Twitter or G&W page.
Interesting, the japanese version of Zelda II has many differences. For example you can choose after level-up which attribute you want to improve. So you can e.g. play the game with a low-HP but High-Mana strategy
Going to look nice with my mario one
@BongoBongo If you leave the USB cable plugged in then it will stay on. I 3D printed a stand but I agree that should have been out of the box.
I'm excited for Links Awakening. I'll play that game on anything lol.
Still tho I wish it was the DX version.
@chipia You can choose to wait and level something else after reaching a level-up in the US version. I always start with by leveling up attack
So, if I could play the Japanese version of the original Zelda on this, does that mean that the mechanic for defeating Pols Voice is in there? Where you actually use your voice to defeat them, by speaking into a microphone on the controller (in this case, the Game & Watch)?
But when does it come out? Pre-ordered it months ago
Nintendo needs to make a new Zelda RPG in celebration of Zelda II: The Adventures of Link's 35th anniversary next year. Make it so that it plays similar to the Adventures of Link, Link's Awakening (2D side-scrolling section), Faces of Evil, and Wand of Gamelon.
Looking forward to my new desk clock!
@AstroTheGamosian interesting point.
can’t wait for this!
It would have been nice if they released Zelda 3D All Stars with Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask and Twilight Princess for the Switch.
Links awakening is on of my favorite games of all time sadly it got stretched horizontally for no reason.
@BongoBongo @riChchestM this time around…. The box is the stand
@Don Personally, I was at least hoping for a port of WWHD and TPHD, maybe in a bundle. The G&W is pretty cool, but ultimately Zelda 35th was quite underwhelming.
@Specter_of-the_OLED That could be fun.
@Don I would love that. Maybe next year we'll get it?
@chipia but on the flip side when you die, the levels reset.
@ParadoxFawkes next week.
Bikinis included or censored?
@Tempestryke
That would be great if it comes out by next year.
@DriftDT
I agree. Hopefully they will release something special in 5 years for Zelda’s 40th anniversary.
@Ryu_Niiyama You know, that's playable, too. Still, considering that my mom said that Christmas was not gonna be as great as last year, I went and pre-ordered it, and paid for it, months ago. Maybe I'll end up getting the book "Ask Iwata" for Christmas.
@YoshiAngemon Ask Iwata was a very good read. I hope you get it.
However I'm confused by your post. Of course I know it has games on it...they advertised it...however that's not why I bought it. Another person in here said the same. I just want it because it is a small Zelda clock.
@Ryu_Niiyama I just hope it comes with that little display piece with the Triforce on it.
@idork99 I'm not saying it actually is a feature in this. I'm just wondering if it is. It would be cool if it was, but it's not the end of the world if it isn't.
@YoshiAngemon I believe that’s the packaging itself, they’re repurposing it as a reusable stand.
@Eel I see. Someone should do something similar for the Game & Watch Super Mario Bros. one.
North American all the way, though I have tried the Famicom version for kicks. It would be cool if they combined them somehow. Just subtly. Like, the battle music in the Famicom version would have been great boss music for Thunderbird in our release.
