Well, here's a surprise - Nintendo has now added N64 wireless controller support to the Super Mario 3D All-Stars version of Super Mario 64.
In other words, you can now play the classic N64 Mario game, similar to how to back when the game was originally released on the N64. Here are the full patch notes for Version 1.1.1, courtesy of Nintendo's official support page:
Ver. 1.1.1 (Released November 3, 2021)
General
- Super Mario 64 now supports the Nintendo Switch Online member exclusive Nintendo 64 Controller (sold separately). Players can now play this title using the same controls as found in the original Nintendo 64 release.
- Information on connecting this controller can be found here.
- All button displays within Super Mario 64 will not reflect the Nintendo 64 controller.
It follows on from 1.1.0 (released in November last year), which added GameCube controller support to Super Mario Sunshine. You can see more about this in our previous post.
So, there you go - you can now play the NSO version of Super Mario 64 with an original controller, and also the limited-time 3D All-Stars version that is no longer for sale.

Wahey, I’ve been waiting on this but didn’t think they’d do it! Now I can finish off 64 with the correct controller, play Sunshine with proper analogue triggers and cry myself to sleep over the lack of Wii Remote support for Galaxy!
I get why they did it but it's also funny that they're updating a game that doesn't exist (Just ask the eshop)
Now be brave and do it with Wiimotes.
@nessisonett Maybe, just maybe if we get wii supported Emulators on the switch for 130$ then they might make another wii Controller. (No cap I would buy that *** in a heartbeat)
It is really funny to have this update… I bought the N64 controller and it arrived. I still haven’t subscribed to the expansion pack. I just opened the controller this week after it sat in its original packaging for about a week. Now I might actually use it! I’ll subscribe the the expansion eventually but right now I’m waiting to see what happens.
I honestly think Nintendo might pull some Ambassador thing again for the few who subscribed early.
Make it compatible with Doom 64 and Turok 1 and 2! Release Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask in physical collection with NSO N64 controller compatibility!
@nessisonett just wait for wii online (not included in expansion pak)
@Aurumonado wow your words moved me
Wait, there is another update ?
Will definitely go back to finish off those stars I didn’t get. Just gotta wait for a restock 😭
@OnlyItsMeReid If it had a physical edition in the wild then it technically exist though.
Awesome stuff. Now you can play Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine with their original controls. If they could do that for Wii Remotes and Super Mario Galaxy that'll be awesome, but I'm not holding my breath for it.
Granted the Switch controls aren't a problem for Galaxy, unlike Sunshine (seriously, don't play that game using Switch controllers).
EDIT: Yes, digitally it doesn't exist anymore, but there are still plenty of physical copies available, both brand new and second-hand.
@Don Yeah same for Quake, Final Fantasy VII, Cruis'n, and Star Wars: Episode 1 - Racer. I want all of these to play the way they were meant to be play N64 style.
@Specter_of-the_OLED That'd be nice, although, why Final Fantasy VII?
Removed - unconstructive
Pretty cool that 2 out of the 3 games in this collection can be played using their original controllers.
Noice! Can’t wait until I get a controller!
Those 30 people who have one will be happy.
😜
Seems as good a reason to open my controller than any! yay!
@Aurumonado same
@Specter_of-the_OLED
Thats not up to nintendo, the developers of those games have to do the update
As someone mentioned in this comments section, I'm starting to see some 3DS Ambassador level of bs that's starting to circulate. This was exactly the reason why people jailbroken a 3DS and I'm starting to think it's not a bad idea for the Switch if Nintendo keeps up with this scummy move.
ok, now fix all the Expansion Pack controls.
Ok so let me get this straight. This is an update to a game Nintendo stopped selling more than half a year ago, using controllers that are out of stock for the year, that were made for an online service that already has (an admittedly slightly different version of) the same game.
I have to assume this was a very simple update to put out, because if not this is the weirdest update to anything ever. I'm not even mad, I think this is hilarious.
@Thelastjedi2007
The "Wii (want) U ('r Money) Pack" ?
@nessisonett I mean, isn't the joycons accurate enough?
No way, really? Awesome! I'm gonna go download it on the eShop right now!
Strange to issue an update for an out-of-print release, though said release remains in relative abundance.
Wait so since April Nintendo basically pretended this game never existed, then updated it randomly 1 day and then will probably go back to pretending it never existed again. Makes sense.
Here it's still very easy to buy this game.

Also this is just a nice service for people that bought the game.
This is good news, before the update both A and B on the N64 pad were mapped to jump so it was impossible to beat the game. 😆
I’d be very interested to see how the control stick movement map compares to the original controller. I have a feeling it may not be the same control profile.
I would love to, but with the controller forever out of stock........
Kinda wish they did this last week before I started a save on SM64 on the collection, but I guess getting the 2nd half of the Stars with the 64 controller is something.
@Don If you enable ‘south paw’ and map buttons correctly with the in game menus Turok 1 and 2 work perfectly with the N64 pad.
@Don Hopefully Turok and Doom 64 can also utilise the controller, but since they're not Nintendo releases I guess it's not a certainty?
@OnlyItsMeReid Doesn't exist? Maybe not digitally but there are still a lot of them on shelves.
But the in game graphics don't change to reflect the controller you're using? Lazy.
Surprising how this even happened... It was still a limited time thing, and we never thought it would update at all, which it did for the GameCube controller support, but not for when it bit the dust. Will it rise from the delisted grave?
People are saying the game doesn’t support rumble with the n64 controller, which is weird since the game does have rumble natively because its the shindou version
I thought they mught do this, but never acutally believed it!
I'd love to play it with my N64 controller...
IF I HAD ONE!!
Ah well, just gonna have to wait until next year.
@nessisonett Don't get me wrong, this is awesome if you love the N64, and I'm happy, but i just hate the controller, it's uncomfortable, the stick makes my hand hurt and the layout and lack of a second stick is off-putting, it was innovative back then, but to me, most n64 stuff just didn't age well, nevertheless, it's an amazing piece of history, and it's so cool that Nintendo keeps letting us use all of these controllers all of these years later, now if we could just get Wii controller support in 2026
@HammerGalladeBro I played Sunshine with the Switch Joy Cons. Worked pretty well for me. Even using a separate button for analog FLUDD actions was easy to adjust.
How did they manage to make a system where games need an upgrade to use a pretty standard controller?
Can you use it on Xbox One with the Rare Replay games? Is it just like another Bluetooth controller?
@OnlyItsMeReid It does exist. It just isn't available.
