One Switch release we're definitely keen to get our hands on in 2022 is Kirby and the Forgotten Land - a new 3D platformer that places Kirby in a mysterious setting filled with abandoned structures of the past.
With the game scheduled to arrive in Spring 2022, it comes as no surprise that it's now been rated by the ESRB in North America. It's 'E10+' suitable for ages 10 and up and at the very least suggests the game is still on track. Here's the game's rating summary in full, which also gives fans of the pink puffball a better idea of what to expect.
It seems Kirby will be having to save kidnapped creatures from evil forces in his new adventure. There are also some more details about the weapons he'll use and the style of boss battles players can expect.
"This is an action-adventure game in which players help Kirby save kidnapped creatures from evil forces. Players traverse 3D platforms while collecting coins, solving puzzles, and using Kirby's abilities to battle cartoony enemies (e.g., mushrooms, foxes, giant turtles). Players use swords, bombs, and blaster-type pistols to defeat enemies; some weapons allow players to use targeting/crosshairs for ranged firing. Boss battles can be frenetic, with laser fire, explosions, and projectiles flying at Kirby, often from a close-up perspective."
Last month, we got our first glimpse of the Switch box art for the title, which you can see in our previous post. Are you excited for Kirby's next big adventure on Nintendo's latest platform? Tell us down in the comments.

I mean, I was sure this was going to be the first 18 rated Kirby. Edge lord Kirby, full of graphic sex and violence… Guess we’re still waiting. Thankfully.
Psykt 4 lovely Kirby's shenanigans!
So when will this game be fully leaked? 2 weeks in advance, 3?
Game looks honestly stunning. Cant wait to get my hands on it. Its the one I am looking forward to the most now.
If it rates well I might even be willing to pay full price for it...
So hyped for this one! I bet it will arrive in May 2022.
Now if we had some Metroid game like this that has no first person or weird stuff like Other M it would be great. Like make it similar to Returnal.
Slow news day?
The article doesn’t even cite the correct rating, being E10+, not E. (edit: which was since fixed)
This was also rated in Australia a month and a bit ago; PG, to be precise, citing “Mild fantasy themes and violence, online interactivity”.
@YusseiWarrior3000 I don't think it's open world, it looks more like Super Mario 3D World style to me.
Am I the only one who thinks that E10+ ratings for Kirby are dumb? I mean is Kirby really too intense for a seven year old?
i usually do not care about Kirby too much, but i am looking forward to this game!
@Silly_G But that rating didn't give us any new info on the game whereas this one did.
30 fps platformer for children, can‘t wait!
excited? No. It's just a game. Less childish in its style of play than the previous game would be good, and Nintendo not drip feeding the contents over the following 12 months or so. If it's a full priced game then give us the full game from day one.
@HotGoomba Maybe there's some blood or Lovecraftian eldritch horrors? Wouldn't be the first time for a Kirby game.
This looks fantastic! It'll be a day-one purchase for me.
I mean didn't we already receive the rating when the box art got revealed for the game?
@Krull an 18 rated Kirby would suck!
…. Ehm….
Wait….
@Krull
A Kirby sex scene? I am assuming that things wouldn't progress beyond the first kiss, with his tendency to swallow everything!
@Krull Were else is all that food supposed go?
@HotGoomba : The dopes on the Australian Classification Board are trigger happy with the PG and M ratings these days, so much so that they’ve lost all meaning. The worst thing about it is that they trivialise the impact of the games/movies that have truly earned their stripes, while rendering the PG and G ratings useless for parents/guardians as they have become far too broad, and the sort of material that was previously fine at G or PG are now being bumped up a rating for no logical reason. To put things into perspective, The Simpsons Hit and Run was rated G back in the day. Now, if re-rated, would very likely get a PG for themes, violence, coarse language, and sexual references, which is an extreme jump from a G with no additional information whatsoever about the game’s content. While surprisingly lenient, I think the G rating was perfectly fine, however, I would have prefaced it with warnings for some of its content (i.e. Very mild violence, themes, coarse language and innuendo).
Nickelodeon Brawl received an M (!!!) rating here (equivalent of PEGI 12 / ESRB Teen) when the arguably scarier, more violent Smash Bros. received a lighter (and more appropriate) PG rating. Australia’s M rating also permits liberal use of the F bomb, which shows just how out of touch they are when a children’s/family game with cartoonish graphics get slapped with a mature rating. I half-expected them to slap an M rating on Pokémon Legends Arceus considering that they gave the Let’s Go games PG ratings for both violence and themes. It’s laughable that they both share the same rating and consumer advice when Arceus looks lot more violent and threatening.
And I have to agree about Kirby as well, though this one looks more perilous than most. This looks more like a low-end PG while I would have given Star Allies and the 3DS games G ratings instead.
Yeah can't wait for this game!
@Ooyah tendency to swallow, huh?
@Silly_G But it does say E10+ in the article...
@ivory_soul : Not when I initially commented it didn't.
@Silly_G "they gave the Let’s Go games PG ratings for both violence and themes."
In fairness, a game that glorifies the catching of wild animals before forcing them to fit in cages should probably have a parental guidance rating.
Its cartoon dog fighting!!!
This is one of my most anticipated 2022 games, tbh. It looks so good.
A March-May 2022 release seems guaranteed at this point IMO
@HotGoomba have you seen zero?
I'm looking forward to this one, I can't wait for it to be released, so I can play the game.
I wish the ESRB would bring back the K-A rating. I always thought the 90s emblems looked way more fun than the very generic ones we have today!
Kirby journeys across a post-apocalyptic wasteland, braving all manner of hazards and horrors, in search of The Fireflies. I can't wait.
@HotGoomba i totally agree. I played melee when I was 5. It’s really dumb how they rate these things. I understand they are trying their best to keep kids safe, but they really need to change the ratings. The worst rating they have given is the red and blue for 3ds being rated T
if Kirby and the Forgotten Land is already rated, does it mean a release date is close? march/april 2022 release date for Kirby and the Forgotten Land?
I love Kirby, but it sure seems between the 3ds, wiiu and now another entry in the series…..we have seen a lot of him. Meanwhile, very little Star Fox, no DK, no unique MK….
I'm really looking forward to this one.
@HotGoomba Nope, I mean its Kirby.
@rockodoodle I get the sense that the Kirby team (which I believe is Hal) is a second party studio for Nintendo and functions in much the same way as Pokemon Company. They seem to always be working on a new game in their series when they wrap their last one, and don't need to receive a commission from Nintendo in the way a Yoshi/Star Fox game might.
To everyone asking why Kirby and the forgotten land is E10+ it might have something similar to zero and 02 and to those who don’t know what they are. Zero is a giant eye creature that shoot blood at you and tears it’s iris out to keep fighting Kirby. And 02 is yet another boss that has blood. Look em up. (Oh and make sure that when your looking up 02 make sure that you specify that your looking for the Kirby character. Because there is a pink haired girl also named zero two.)
Kirby game rated to be child friendly! A shocker.
I just am hoping it isn't child-only; some Kirby games are a little too easy to be as fun when you are older than 10.
It looks great visually so hopefully it will be fun to play for a wide audience.
@Medic_Alert I felt like BoTW felt empty but ppl loved that game so I'm sure this one will be fine.
@FishyS I'm 34 and love the franchise and am currently playing through Sekiro again on PS5 but different strokes for different folks.
@Kirby_Girl I enjoy some of the Kirby games, I'm just hoping this one is less easy/simple than some.
@rockodoodle that's because HAL labs mostly makes Kirby games the way GF just makes Pokemon ones. Gonna have to ask Nintendo themselves about those other franchises.
@FishyS post game always has harder content. Star Allies has the hardest boss rush to solo in the series and "another demension" was a harder campaign. I swear whenever ppl complain about the game difficulty Shinya Kumazaki just makes the post games modes harder and the bosses in the new runs brutal...please... don't say another word for me...
@Kirby_Girl I can take or leave bosses, but I was more thinking of the platforming and exploration part of the new game as opposed to just bosses. Hoping it has enough meat to keep things interesting.
@FishyS I love challenging bosses so that's up my ally. Guess you'll have to wait and see if it's that medium level for you.
Probably May if the eshop listing for Advance Wars being in April is accurate. January has Legends Arceus, February isn't Spring, March has Triangle Strategy and April has Advance Wars.
@Krull turns out, graphic Kirby sex, still just an E rating..
This and Bayonetta 3 are the main games I’m looking forward to next year.
@Medic_Alert I thought the hook was it’s a 3D Kirby game. There were 3 that were canceled during the GameCube era and that’s it. This will be the first completed one released to the public.
@Max_the_German You just described at least 20% of all Nintendo games. Also technically this is 60fps but I'm certain you were kidding lol
@HotGoomba Several later Kirby games tackle some slightly dark tones that I wouldn't want my 4 year old niece exposed to. At least at that point of her life.
@Medic_Alert the games are generally above average and consistently enjoyed by the base fans. With not a huge stinker in the bunch. It's fine if this entry level series is not your cup of tea but the games are generally received well and the franchise has been around for over 30 years coming up. I wouldn't say it's all 50% scores and disappointed fans. Not bad for a series that is 2nd party and with an introductory mission. Granted the productions aren't on the level of an Odyssey or BoTW but that's a lot of games.
I hope it comes out very early spring. I have a 2 for £84 voucher expiring in February after using the other on Super Mario 3d world at the beginning of the year.
As long as its not too easy I will definitely buy.
@DumbElder Off topic, who is that an Avatar of? She looks familiar
@HotGoomba It‘s unstable 30 fps, at least in the trailer. And tell me, what was the last 30 fps platformer from Nintendo (3DS ports excluded)? Super Mario Sunshine?
@brandonbwii you're pulling my leg, right? 😆
@Krull I mean, it's already got cannibalism! XD
As much as I dog Nintendo I'm NGL I'm really looking forward to this. As long as it isn't braindead easy like Star Allies, I have some faith that this is going to be a banger. Maybe the first of 2022?
@Krull What if they finally gave Kirby a full voice and he sweared like a sailor? Maybe Tracey Morgan could do the voice?
@Kirby_Girl I love the line drawn from Sekiro to Kirby. I was just thinking about how, if the release timing is right, this would be like a perfect companion game to Elden Ring for me. Dark ichor with a pink puffball chaser. Yes please!
@Max_the_German It's still in development, so it'll likely be a stable 60fps by launch, as this game will likely be less graphically intense than something like Odyssey.
Also I was moreso referring to the "platformer for children" part being more than 20% (almost certainly more), sorry for the confusion.
But to answer your question, Kirby Star Allies is the latest Nintendo game (even though HAL made it) that is 30fps (for some reason).
@Medic_Alert I don't even know what other games you like lol. Not sure what you are talking about. Also I'm not "running" around. I'm under an article about a particular game. I'm not chasing or arguing with anyone. Just under an article talking to ppl about what the particular game the article is about. This is chill discussion Not hostile lol.
@Spiders as both a big Kirby and Souls fan, next year is truly my year! Kirby is the perfect companion from when I hit moments of frustration in other games. Lol sometimes it just takes a nice break with some chill action platforming to get me going again in my other ventures. I'm hyped for Elden Ring!
My most anticipated Switch game right now.
The colors used for this game makes it so appropriate for Nintendo to release during the Spring. Love the green nature feel. Plus the urban setting, does seem they want to do something unique like Odyssey.
Pistols? Are we getting a cowboy Kirby?
Damn! I was hoping for an A+, or at the very least a R rating.
@DumbElder No I’m not. I’m sure I’ll feel dumb once you tell me
@Kirby_Girl Yeah they’re being angry for no reason. Sorry
So hyped for this game
@brandonbwii @brandonbwii only one of the most succesful female entrepreneurs of recent times, Joanne Rowling. 💛👱🏻♀️

@DumbElder It finally hit me right after I posted for the second time. I didn’t feel like deleting. The way you acted as I should know her I figured she was someone important to gaming considering this is a gaming website. I’m not the biggest fan of Harry Potter so it was easy for me to forget about the author.
Don't see in any way why my first comment was labeled inappropriate, but I'm glad justice has been served.
@brandonbwii Don't worry too much, DumbElder was only interested in J.K. Rowling because she's a transphobic icon. You can read through DumbElder's other comments and there's still a transphobic remark in there, comment #24 on the purple gamecube article.
@zool "Just a game"? You can be excited for a game. As for the "childish" bit, Kirby was always meant to be for kids. And adults. Everybody can play a Kirby game. And Nintendo isn't "drip feeding" anything either.
@Max_the_German And a 3ps platformer for children is a bad thing...why?
@mr-duster yes Nintendo did drip feed the contents of the game to us, just like they did with Mario Golf. Read a few reviews, it's not just me.
@mr-duster Not bad at all. I find it sad that it‘s only 30 fps though. And I find it weird how adults in this forum write „Can‘t wait, day one for me!!!“.
@zool That's not "drip-feeding". It's called patching. And we're talking about a video game, not food.
@Max_the_German Well, I don't know what to tell you. Both kids and adults get excited for this sort of thing nowadays, especially who grew up with games like Kirby when they were kids. It's not going to be going anywhere.
@Medic_Alert I am glad to say this game is amazing.
