If you could see the return of any classic video games console, what would you choose?
That was the question put to 1,000 UK gamers in a recent study by Hyperoptic, all in a bid to see which system holds the highest nostalgia value. Sitting right at the very top of the votes is Nintendo's own DS, closely followed by both the PlayStation and the PlayStation 2.
As it happens, we'd say the DS is actually a pretty solid choice – not just because of its great library of games, but because it's arguably one of the least likely consoles to ever receive a 'Classic Edition' rerelease or even a digital virtual console service. Plenty of DS games simply wouldn't be the same without the console's dual-screen setup, so an official rerelease would be the only real way to enjoy them again today.
Here are the full results from Hyperoptic's study:

Do you agree that the Nintendo DS is the most deserving console of a modern comeback? Which system would you choose? Fire away in the comments below.

The DS has recently had a comeback with the 2Ds. 3DS was a DS with added 3D and the 2DS took it away again. It's pretty much a DS with nicer chips.
Space Invaders RPG
@YusseiWarrior3000 yeah, that's what the chips do.
I do miss unique games like Trauma Centre and DS Brain Training that could only work to their best potential on a duel screen with stylus but do feel it and the Wii ran their course by the end, so glad Nintendo is back to more traditional play styles now.
@Medic_Alert what you describe is not a GameCube. It is some kind of next gen console.
What an odd choice the c64 games system wow I know the c64 had plenty of great games it was my first computer but the games system take away all the functionality of the c64 who exactly did they ask 😂
I blame nintendogs for that preference. I don't like that game, but it was a huge phenomena back then. I wonder why there are not plans for that franchise on switch or mobile phones.
As has been said, the DS had a modern comeback in the form of the 3DS (family), which was the console generation before the Switch. It seems a little strange to essentially be asking for ‘last gen’ to make a comeback when it’s still pretty fresh in the minds of many people and relatively easy to pick up.
I'd like the Switch to make a modern comeback.
Surely the 3ds has only just stopped being a thing…
“I’d love the ps4 to make a modern comeback…”
Ridiculous
The Nintendo Switch DS! Yes, please
I wonder if Nintendo would do a classic DS in the same way they did the NES and SNES minis (but maybe not mini!) with 20+ games loaded on it?
Yes. The Switch has some great games, but the Switch itself doesn't have any of the cool features the DS had. I would love for Nintendo's next main system to be more like the DS. At the very least, it should have two screens.
"DS" "Retro"
Suddenly I feel ancient.
If this was the Japanese audience, you wouldn't even see the Sega Mega Drive on that list and PSP would likely be on the very top. The UK and mostly all of Europe favor Sega's platform over Nintendo and Sony. Still odd how the Sega Master System did not at least make it to the top 10 since it's very popular in the UK as well (though not as much as in Brazil).
Just buy a DS lite (or 2/3DS) if you don’t already have one.
@Clyde_Radcliffe We actually do have Brain Training on the Switch, and it works well with the stylus. It's a disappointing version as it lacks content, but if Nintendo wanted to make more DS-Style games like Trauma Center, it's definitely possible on Switch.
Bro what LMAO?
Well, dual screen gaming is the only significant innovation from Nintendo's recent history that Switch had to leave out on the porch, so if its successor brought back a clamshell format on top of everything else, I'd be quite pleased. But the odds don't seem very high so far, especially since the 10 Gen console will be rolling out in the wake (or, worst case scenario, MIDDLE) of the proverbial component shortage, and producing it with two screens per unit could complicate the situation more than Nintendo would be content with.
Also, I still miss resistive touchscreens - the capacitive ones of Vita and Switch have their upsides, but definite downsides as well. Especially when you're an adult with that much bigger thumbs.
@YusseiWarrior3000
I was gonna say something similar; isn’t the Switch, in a way, a modern ds?
@Savino The Wii U is basically a Wii HD.
do they mean super mario kart or mario kart 64 cause super mario kart 64 is not a game
@chipia Nintendo seems reluctant to make touch screen focused games on the Switch because many will be playing on their TV. Also the fact you can't do everything in Animal Crossing New Horizons on the touch screen is absolutely ridiculous. I don't think you can even design patterns with it.
DS for sure. It had the charm and longevity of the PS1 in your pocket, some of the best Call of Duty games, a metric ton of JRPGs vying for my personal Best JRPG Ever Made, a myriad Metroidvanias, the Last Good Castlevania, an army of amazing first party titles, and its only real shortcoming was that it didn't have enough online features because Nintendo still hasn't learned how to do them by now.
I could list games everyone must play that you have never heard of that are on the DS for a day or two and not get tired.
I wholeheartedly agree.
@ryancraddock
Why on earth are we reporting a survey from a company that sells broadband services?
I'd say PS2 for home consoles (although if Sony could somehow manage to get PS5 to play PS2 discs with enhancements the way MS goes about Xbox backwards compatibility, that'd be even better) and either Game Boy Advance or PSP for handhelds.
If Nintendo released a DSi-style console with a GBA slot I would be all over that. With the option of downloadable games. Downloadable games can be "enhanced" by overclocking to the DSi speed. While GBA dl games come with a personalized border and manual scans.
It always felt "wrong" to play DS on 3DS because of the smoothing and lack of motion blur that my AGS-101 and DSi have.
Hell no, the DS has an amazing library for sure and the on screen map on the 2nd screen is a benefit but handhelds on their own are such a major pain and limited way to play on as opposed to being able to play on the big screen.
To me handheld gaming is a compromise.
Etrian Odyssey for the dual-screen win
Is it time for the 4DS..
@Medic_Alert The survey asked about the return of a classic console. So I imagine it would be like the snes classic or Genesis classic. Neither of those play switch games.
@Gs69 Maybe they got confused with that console that was essentially a C64 in a different case without keyboard? That thing that sold so badly and came with a game that couldn’t be played because it needed a keyboard that they took back all unsold units and converted them back to C64 computers 😂
@Rhaoulos yes, imagine a Switch with modern features. That would be really cool.
In terms of games I find it extremely funny that all of the game franchises listed (except space invaders maybe) have had at least one if not more entries in the last ten years. They are not dead at all.
@FragRed ha 😂 I remember reading that now you have come to mention it. Really is an odd choice I pretty much forgot it even existed the only advantage it had over the original was it’s loading times
I still play mine all the time (seriously!). So if anything, just bringing those consoles back so if mine wear out I can buy a new one. That was the greatest gaming era in all of history too, IMO. I have spent more time playing DS (and I think I should count 3ds too since it’s in the family), than any other console I’ve owned since I started playing video games in 1977. And I do have numerous game systems including Switch, PlayStation (3 versions), Xbox, Sega (4 versions), GameBoy family of systems, and many other game systems including obscure ones like Intellivision.
@Bustacap The release date is 1997 so of course they meant Mario Kart 64.
Clamshell form factor was the bomb!
A Switch Lite with the screen on top and controls on bottom would make it the best handheld
Nintendo HDS
Play HDS, 3DS, NDS and Switch games.
@Medic_Alert there's modernizing and then theres making a completely different thing. A better resolution, more responsive controls, sure but making a GameCube play switch games isn't really modernizing, it's making a different console. I'd love to see one though. I love seeing people put a micro PC in a GameCube she'll, those are cool too.
@YusseiWarrior3000 I think they just mean ds as a hole
I just want a Switch with a 3D screen.
Yeah I would like to see a new ds
I like the switch but just not compact anuff to take out
What was needed was that the New 3DS XL was able to use older carts from the 2DS/3DS older generation carts. That would be a good comeback.
Any Sega console that's not a Mega Drive / Genesis.
I refuse to accept a survey which refers to “Super” Mario Kart 64. Do your research.
@Exciter89 not going to happen. The cost and hardware would cost more and they be loosing money.
@themightyant Seriously. You can get one off eBay for less than 40 quid right now.
@YusseiWarrior3000
Am I kidding to have an opinion? No. I’ve never docked my Switch. It’s a handheld system to me. The last system I had was a 3ds. The Switch feels like a monstrous evolution in handheld gaming, again, to me.
No interest, nothing with hinges.
Not really. I was thinking a one handed controller like the Wii's nunchuck and a phone.
@YusseiWarrior3000
Of course. It’s a wonderful system.
@Gs69 It’s Commodore, what you expect? They did the exact same thing TWICE with the Amiga. The Commodore CD thing to rival the Philips CDi which was just a Amiga 500 without keyboard but with a CD drive and the Amiga CD32 console that was a bog standard 1200 with a CD drive but no keyboard. No wonder they went bankrupt 😂
@SwitchForce Oh how much does it cost to produce a switch and how much would the added 3d screen be?
@FragRed yeah it’s a shame really cos the c64 and Amiga had some great games and you could literally throw a c64 down the stairs and it would still work 😂
DS with OLED screens. Make it happen.
I don't care how its dressed up, the Switch is no replacement for the DS/ 3DS or any of the other Nintendo handhelds for that matter.
You know this list is utter BS when the console C64 GS (NOT the microcomputer C64) made the list with 50+% of gamers wanting it back... That console is one of the biggest failures in the history of console gaming XD. I doubt anyone wants it back that badly, certainly not such a high proportion of gamers either.
EDIT: also... "Super" Mario Kart 64 heh you say?
@YusseiWarrior3000 True, but the DS has GBA BC. The 3DS does not.
@Gs69 They did! Loved my Amiga 600. Absolutely beast of a machine it was. Could probably throw that at someone and not only do damage to them but the system would still work afterwards 😂
@Exciter89 these comments are why one isn't in hardware developments.
You say it's the least likely to have its games come on Virtual Console-like services, yet it literally came on the Wii U's VC.
Removed - unconstructive
DS was one of, if not THE, greatest game systems ever.
Its legacy lives on without needing a deliberate revival.
The fact that PS1 shortly behind and Sony did try giving it a comeback only a few years ago makes me think that this poll might be a little BS.
If we need a new DS do we need a new switch???
Answer: general public says YES!
I fear the poll questions may have needed a bit more explanation both for the people answering and for us lot reading the results.
Sonic remake?! It's been re-released so many times already.
Mario Kart 64? How many tracks haven't been featured in more recent Mario Kart games?
DS remake? It's called a 3DS?
PS One got a mini console just a few years ago...
PS2 remake? It's called a blu Ray player !!!
Nonsense poll.
I do miss the dual screen. I think it was implemented so well in many games.
I'd say yes to the return of the DS but only if it means an enhanced version of Tetris DS.
Em just no. Second screen was pretty much a gimmick. Terrible resolution and bad 3d graphics. I dare say GBA games look better. Dragon Quest 9 was cool though but still low res makes it hard to play it on my DS XL. Sleep button was killer feature though.
It was cool as it brought us the first games with touch controls (with stylus though not finger) before iPhone. We paid full price for mobile games that later generations enjoyed in another form for 0,99$ on smartphones.
But its a relic of the past now. How many games really needed 3ds second screen? Gameboy/Gameboy color is the one console that needs a comeback!
Maybe it's just me but I miss the point of all this. Aren't current systems basically newer modernized versions of their company's earlier consoles?
The only one on the list that makes even a little sense is the DS with it's two screens. That really doesn't exist anymore with current consoles. I'm not including the Wii U or 3DS as current consoles. The other like the Playstation are really dumb. I mean, don't we already have that? It's called the PS5!
A DS HD, or HDS if you will.
The image of the DS in this article with the red light for low battery is bothering me 😂 Anyone else?
Isn't a modern version of a DS just a 2DS? Also about half of those systems have a mini console version which is essentially a modern version, how much more modern would you want to make them? The commodore 64 GS? Isn't that what the what the C64 mini pretty much was with the added functionality of having an on screen keyboard so you aren't locked out of games. If these people want a more modernised version of older systems that use the original media and controllers they can go with an Analogue console but good luck on that price point as they aren't cheap.
Also don't pretty much all of those games have modern versions? The fact you have to assume they mean remakes probably mean the ones voting in the first place just clicked on games the recognised the name of. Proof being that Crash Bandicoot actually does have a modern remake.
The DS was a fantastic consoles home to amazing games.
The Wii U DS emulator absolutely did not work for many of those titles however. Best to play in the real thing.
The DS is amazing, and so is the PS2. However the gaming landscape has changed in such a way that there will never again be consoles that are as awesome as those two, so a "comeback" isn't really possible
@tameshiyaku Yeah I was never a fan of the hinges. Overall I am glad they moved away from the dual screen concept.
The list of games that people want modernized feels so random… half the games on the list have remakes or modernizations. Mario Kart 8, Tetris Connect, Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces. The only game on the list that lacks any modern iteration worth discussing is Space Invaders. In fact the only game on the list that doesn’t have a modernization is Donkey Kong - only because Pauline hasn’t be captured for decades. It’s almost as if they polled a bunch of people who know nothing about games.
On the flip side I do miss 3DS being my go to for portable gaming, I’d find it difficult to ditch the dock capabilities if Nintendo went another route next gen.
Umm i just dont see it?
@Irfann Space Invaders RTS
What a strange question, I mean, I LOVED my DS Lite and 3DS, as well as Tetris DS as shown above (and many other games) but I'm not sure anyone needs a return already...just play a 3DS
Dreamcast would be my choice but it's not an option , all of those games already have modern entries...
Can one imagine the vastness had the Switch been backwards compatible with the DS and 3DS?
My answer would also be the DS, not for a "classic" version but in hopes that Nintendo's next generation can take cues from the DS/3DS again.
I use my Switch in handheld mode plenty, but it's just not as good to hold in the hands or toss in a bag as Nintendo's previous handhelds. After 4 years of playing on it I can admit that to myself. Even if it's not dual screen, I hope the Switch 2 can work in a clamshell design or a focus on touchscreen play again.
Yes. We lost something with the switch having only one screen. If switch too or two or whatever has a second screen? It’s all over.
The Wii and PS2 for the home consoles
But Super Mario World SNES and Tekken 3 PSOne for the video games.
Yeah, DS for the portable
There were things that I really liked about second screen gaming: full screen interactive maps, using portions of the touch screen as virtual buttons, and the like.
Sometimes I think it would be neat if the Switch connected to TVs wirelessly and acted as a second screen, the way the Wii U gamepad did.
But most of the time when I'm playing Switch games, I don't find myself wishing for a second screen.
I have always thought it would be cool, though, if there were some kind of DS shaped attachment with its own buttons and screen, that you could slot the Switch into, turning the Switch into the bottom screen.
It could have a DS/3DS card slot for backwards compatibility, plus Wii U ports could keep or regain their GamePad features.
I definitely do not miss having separate, dedicated home and handheld consoles. Combining them was genius and I want to see that concept continue to evolve.
If Nintendo's next console is somehow able to be more powerful yet more portable, I will be thrilled.
Heck, maybe it could have one of those fancy folding screens like some of the new smartphones have.
Now THAT would be something.
can you please charge that DS? It's giving me anxiety
No psp on the list?
It's kinda weird that you can get actual DS cheaper than Pokemon/Dragon Quest/Chrono Trigger for it.
Sorry but the correct answer is Sega Dreamcast.
@Savino We do, and it was called the Wii U.
This article references "modernizing" old consoles. What's the point? That's what every new console generation already does, essentially. The PS5 is basically a modernized PS4. And the same for the PS4 in regards to the PS3. I guess I could kind of see it if an older console had specific physical features that later systems didn't have, but the 3DS and 2DS lines were essentially just DS systems but better with more power and features. And they play all the old DS games, so why would anyone want specifically the DS modernized?
Well, if it’s the only way we’ll get a new Etrian Odyssey…
Nintendo already has the plate full to do something like this is wasting the funds that can be used to update and launch a more powerful Switch. This is the part those surveys forget to mention. We have used 2DS and 3DS that can play those carts. It's not like those are in a museum or such. So this is just nonsense at this point.
Panasonic 3DO, baby!! The future is R.E.A.L.!
@RudyC3 Commodore was BIG stuff in Europe. Like NEC in Japan.
It has already made quite a few comebacks over the years, the last one being the latest 3ds.
@Grail_Quest I still own a C64 "C" model so I know it all too well, I grew up playing Boulder Dash, Blagger, Thundercats and many others on it.
But the C64 is not what's on the list, it's the derivative console that is, the C64 GS. That was never popular by comparison. And quite frankly... we've had a C64 Mini anyway, so if we wanted a console like convenient C64 experience, there's already that option available (and you can easily load all the games you want on it, since the vast majority of them are abandonware at this point)
The ds was a good system, but I'd dread something like this degenerating into a bunch of copy-paste remaster games and not much beyond it.
