Super Mario and Donkey Kong aren't the only ones doing deals with Universal Studios Japan - it seems Pokémon will also be joining in on the fun.
Details are still rather limited, but it seems Universal has today announced a partnership with The Pokémon Company. According to a translation of the tweet below, Multiple projects are currently underway and the first is scheduled at some point in 2022.
Here's a little bit more information about the "long-term strategic alliance", courtesy of the Japanese press release:
"U-SJ Headquarters and Pokemon Co., Ltd. are involved in the development and provision of new in-park entertainment. We are pleased to inform you that we have formed a medium- to long-term strategic alliance and that multiple development projects are underway. The two companies aim to create and provide a new dimension of theme park experience that has never been seen before by combining outstanding creative creativity and world-class entertainment technology.
"The first collaboration project of this alliance is expected to appear as a member of the park by the end of 2022, and we will continue to deliver new experiences that exceed everyone's expectations. Universal Studios Japan aims to create and disseminate Japan's world-class entertainment with ideas and creativity that continue to attract many guests, and to become the place of choice for people all over the world."
This announcement follows a rumour in 2018 about a Pokémon theme park coming to USJ. When we have more details, we'll be sure to update you. What are your thoughts about this news so far? Tell us down below.

If it wents on we'll have smash brothers in real live
A Pokémon Theme Park?
@Azuris
Lol i so want a smashbros movie (or series)
I think it would be perfect as an anime (naruto style)
Damn, time to move to Japan.....dammit, too broke to move to Japan.
Can't wait to get shoved inside of a Pokeball and fired into some sort of pinball-style ride.
Or something.
NINJA APPROVED
Oh lord what now!
Ahh the Pokemon Company… the only one as greedy as Disney… starts building theme parks.
Now it has come full circle.
If it’s anything like Nintendo World, it could be fun catching exclusive Pokémon with AR and other activities within the park… but they would be alienating the people who can’t go to Japan. Sigh
@fafonio shiny distributions would probably send annual pass prices skyrocketing & the total number sold. Good thing for both companies, kinda fun for consumers. Wonder how Pokemon Go will fit. Would be cool to have annual festivals there
Interesting,
hopefully lasts longer than Pokepark.
Guess they have plans after the DK Jungle
O man... did not see that coming
Universal Studios gonna F around and force me to travel to Japan.
A Pokémon Snap style ride would be cool!
I'm thinking they will integrate Pokemon GO into specially designed environments meant to really showcase each Pokemon appearance. Think back to the Pokemon GO reveal trailer, making the Pokemon appear hyper-realistic, interacting with the actual terrain. They could also recreate Pokemon Snap similarly to Universal Studios' Spiderman and Transformers rides, if you've ever ridden in them. And of course, this isn't to mention the physical animatronics they could utilize just like with Jurassic Park.
My guess is they will either create a park-specific app just like Super Mario Land, or integrate the features into Pokemon GO.
So yeah, there's a lot of potential with the Pokemon brand.
This sounds promising.
@spoondriver Definitely.
@BloodNinja Lol that would actually be very bad. Check out the story of the um, failed Bailey Ball ride at Action Park. You will DIE laughing. Granted, the poor sap who tested it probably didn't think it was funny, and the safety inspector refused to approve it after it went off track and nearly ran him over. But the way they described the whole incident is hysterical.
@Tempestryke I just looked it up, and holy smokes I needed that laugh. Thanks so much man <3
