Super Smash Bros. Ultimate might be the greatest crossover video game of all time, but it's been far from easy for the game's director Masahiro Sakurai over the years.
Apart from health issues and struggles when adding certain fighters - whenever he appeared on a show, did an interview, or posted something on social media, he had to be extremely careful as some fans would speculate about anything he said and link it back to the next fighter or collab coming to Nintendo's all-star brawler on the Switch. Obviously, as of this week, it's the end of an era - with the final DLC fighter, Sora from Kingdom Hearts, now available.
In other words, it means Sakurai can now share a bit more about his personal life and love of video games, without fans thinking everything he posts on Twitter is a hint. Of course, we're sure that won't stop some, but if you have been keeping tabs on the development cycle, it's pretty clear at this point that Smash is done - at least for now.
So, what's his first game-related photo post-Smash Ultimate development? It's a photo of an Among Us toy alongside his cat. Now, just keep in mind, if he had posted this sort of photo earlier this month, the entire Smash fandom would have potentially gone into a complete meltdown. Heck, it's admittedly still pretty neat how he's acknowledging one of the most popular multiplayer releases in recent years.
So, there you have it - Sakurai now feels free to post what he likes (in relation to games), without having to worry about fans thinking it's a hint. Well - again, we're sure it won't stop some people from speculating, but if Sakurai's happy to post this sort of stuff now on his Twitter page, then good for him!
In addition to Smash Bros., Sakurai will also soon be ending his Famitsu columns, which he's been writing since 2003. It truly is the end of the era. Fortunately, he won't be stepping away from the video game industry (at least completely) - reiterating earlier this year how he wouldn't be retiring after Ultimate. What would you like to see next from Sakurai, apart from a well-deserved rest? Leave a comment down below.

Man, I feel relieved for him lol
Kid Icarus Uprising HD
The most pampered developer in the history of gaming!
Please it’s not gonna stop fans that speculate about EVERYTHING!!! People STILL think that there’s gonna be a switch pro. But now it’s being called the switch 2. 😒
Edit: HOLY GUACAMOLE!!!10 LIKES ON MY COMMENT!0_0 thank you.😊
A Waluigi toy would've been much funnier.
People seem to forget that Sakurai is a gamer too...
Yes! Nintendogs + cats + Among Us confirmed for Switch.
Were there any actual hints in his images? I never heard of there being anything of significance. The fanbase needs to stop reading into his images.
Say all you want about the Among Us toy, but the most important message of this tweet is that Sakurai's cat is freakin adorable.
@BloodNinja Interesting way of spelling harassed.
TBH I really would want to see him develop something that isn't smash. But its nice that he doesn't have to get Attacked for every little thing he does.
Post a picture of a mango he found to be very tasty ITS CRASH! ITS CRASH IT HAS TO BE CRASH WHOA, WHOA, WHOA, WHOAWHOAWHOA!
Sorry.
Won't be speculating about new fighters "as much".
Seems they know that there will always be a few people out there that refuse to believe that there are no more characters coming lol
AmOnG uS fOr SmAsH?!?!
More cat photos
@CactusMan
I wouldn't be surprised if his free time allowed him to give some creative input for Kirby and the Forgotten Land. After all, Forgotten Land might be the cancelled GameCube game revived from development hell; one of the Kirby games that Sakurai was working on before he left HAL.
I did a play through with Sora this morning and afterwards was told that all the fighters have now been unlocked. It was a surreal feeling. I'm not the biggest Smash fan out there, but I do like it a lot, and the cross over element of it is a true testament to video game history and likely something we'll never see again.
I wouldn't be surprised if Sakurai hangs it up after this. It's going to be very hard to top Ultimate.
That photo is sus. Perhaps he's not done yet
This is genuinely funny, gotta love how he picked one of the most...provocative recent gaming characters to highlight how he doesn't have to worry about people thinking everything is a hint for Smash now
The bittersweet symphony of twitter fame
Hopefully he can have a picture of Rayman. I know it isn't likely but still.
Thank goodness. Let the man relax.
Enjoy freedom while it lasts, Sakurai-san. It's just a matter of time before Nintendo announces a new Smash game before asking you to direct it again lol.
sakurais cat for smash
@CactusMan as a huge Kirby fan, especially his games, I'd love to see him give the franchise another spin but I don't think that will ever happen. Kirby Superstar will always be loved at least and the current director is consistant and doing well.
He's not done until he brings back in game online taunts. It's a game it's supposed to be fun.
@FernandoMachado Hmm... Wonder how that would work for switch? 🤔
@boxyguy they're in brawl, technically!
I'd like to see him either try his hand at reviving another old IP again, or create something original.
Good for him that he can now post things without (too much) worry again though!
It’s a crime that we don’t have a new Kid Icarus game. Possibly my favorite game ever made. Such a masterpiece.
@LinkSword How on earth is he harassed? Fan smash character requests? Oh, the horror...
Well.... We now know the Among Us character is officially in the cast for the new Smash Bros he has probably already started making. Or if not started, will be starting soon
My estimation is now 4-5 years development would be right on point for the next console release. He is always retiring after the next one only to never retire.
People are too obsessed with this guy.
His cat is really thicc
Among Us bean as fighter in Smash Bros Ultimate 2 confirmed guys
I'm just happy I can stop hearing about this game and this poor man who has to put up with one of the most childish of internet demographics.
Is he involved with the open world Kirby game? That would be pretty neat
@BloodNinja Interesting way of spelling death threats, too.
Must be nice living under a rock, though. The rest of us in the real world should try from time to time.
Some people will still speculate. You can always recognize the type, they take any piece of information and say something like 'I wonder if this means that <something else> is going to happen now'. These people never care about the actual announcement, they just use the announcement to speculate.
I do hope he gets his life back. And hopefully people will leave him alone. Cult of celebrity is insane.
Smash will never be complete until we get Waluigi.
@LinkSword What are you even talking about at this point?
Can we PLEASE just let this man rest already?! Between giving interviews talking about how exhausted and tormented he is and slowly releasing DLC for a game that was completed almost 5 years ago, I don't know how he's even ALIVE at this point!!! HOOK THIS MAN UP TO LIFE SUPPORT!
Smash Ultimate started being developed even before Smash Wii U was finished with Bayonetta.
It's likely the same will happen here, Sakurai will take a long vacation, but when it's over, back to working on the next Smash Bros. game for the Switch 2, maybe it's going to be just a deluxe version of Ultimate.
Sakurai deserves to rest, retire, or at least work on other games like a new Kid Icarus, but Nintendo likely wants another 25 million copies of Smash sold.
@BloodNinja I've been reading along and am anxiously awaiting his reply to you. This ought to be interesting LOL.
@PoliticallyIncorrect Hahahah
I mean, if Sakurai got death threats, that's terrible. But I am interested in seeing what that guy above has to say. Maybe it will be another "YoU sPeLLeD It WrOnG," comment LOL
Good morning. Or good evening. Or good night.
Maybe I should just say good morrow. Good morrow!
@BloodNinja I just hope he's joking. I mean, yeah, if he got death threats, that sucks and all... BUT... he jumped on you like you were a "harrassophobe" (or something) and you should be damned. I just can't fathom how he went where he did.
Awesome! I hope him and his excellent team enjoy a nice long break from game development for a little while so they can recharge their batteries. Us gamers will enjoy the content they have created for us!
@PoliticallyIncorrect I’ll just get my pitch forks for myself I guess :/
poor Sakurai he can't tweet/post/share anything, the cospiratist will think this is a hint for the next character for Super Smash Bros Ultimate or the next Super Smash Bros game.
@ModdedInkling but Sakurai no longer work at Hal Laboratory on the Kirby franchise.
@GOATboy no,Shiya Kuyamazaki is the person reponsible for Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Sakurai no longer work at Hal Laboratory, Shiya Kuyamazaki is now the person reponsible for Kirby franchise.
@Giancarlothomaz
Reread my comment. I already acknowledged that Sakurai left HAL. It doesn't restrict him from being a creative consultant (not a developer) for the game.
@FNL You're an odd person.
It's great they finally caught a break.
Riding horses probably is very fun after all that.

That's perfectly fine Sakurai, we respect your decision, and we appreciate the work you all have put in for such. Close the project down whenever needed as it has been noted for a while now anyway. From 64 to ultimate has probably been quite some work hasn't it.
Have fun.🗃️🗂️📋📑✅
