Update #4 [Tue 5th Oct, 2021 02:00 BST]: During last week's Tokyo Game Show, Arc System Works shared the opening movie trailer for this upcoming release. It'll arrive in Japan this December, and will feature over 120 stages, according to the official game website. There's no word on the game being localised at this stage.
Update #3 [Fri 10th Sep, 2021 06:30 BST]: Here are the first official screenshots and a little more information, via Gematsu:
"Set in the late Han Dynasty during the Warring States period where local warlords rivaled against each other, a nonsensical and exhilarating comedy adventure will unfold with Guan Yu (Kunio) as the protagonist living in the turbulent age. Additionally, familiar characters will also appear as warlords and tacticians, dyeing the world of Sangokushi in Kunio-kun. Experience the start of the turbulent age that is the “Yellow Turban Rebellion,” the famous “Battle of Red Cliffs,” and more in the style of comical action."
"Belt-Scrolling Action: The game uses the series’ familiar “belt scroll action.” Intricately connected areas form a vast stage. In addition to battlefields, there are also towns and villages where you can shop. You can also go sightseeing in various terrains by visiting every corner of each area."
"Flashy Strategems: When talking about Sangokushi, flashy “Strategems” are always there to turn the tables. Using powerful Strategies will have a huge effect on all the enemies on the screen. Also, you can also discover secret rooms and hidden passages by using them in certain places…"
Update #2 [Wed 8th Sep, 2021 01:05 BST]: We've got some new details about the Kunio-kun anniversary project including screenshots and some character art. This is all courtesy of Famitsu via Nintendo Enthusiast.
The title translates to Kunio-kun's Records of the Three Kingdoms: Everyone Gather! - with the game taking place in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms universe. In the screenshots, you can see Kunio and other characters dressed up in matching attire. Famitsu also notes how development is around "65%" complete and the game will launch on Switch this December in Japan.
Update #1 [Sat 4th Sep, 2021 04:55 BST]: As somewhat expected, the Kunio-kun anniversary website has a revealed a new project is in development. It's called Kunio-kun no Sangokushi dayo: Zeiin Shuugou! (thanks, Gematsu). It will be published by Arc System works and developed by APlus Games.
Here's the official teaser trailer, showing off the game's logo:
Original article [Fri 3rd Sep, 2021 04:30 BST]: It's the 35th anniversary of Technōs Japan's popular co-op beat 'em up series Kunio-kun this year.
A number of months ago Arc System Works revealed the official logo for this celebration and mentioned how it would be followed by many different projects - including new game releases, "related products" and even collaborations.
A countdown website has now also gone live. At the time of writing, there are just under 24 hours remaining. We'll presumably be getting a reveal of sorts this time tomorrow on September 4th.
On a somewhat related note, WayForward also recently gave us a look at the spin-off sequel, River City Girls 2 - including some screenshots and character artwork.
The Kunio-kun anniversary celebrations will run for a year. What would you like to see from this series in its 35th year? Tell us down below.

What could it be? 👀
River City Ransom Remaster Confirmed!!!!
Whatever it is, it's gotta be hot-blooded!
I hope it's not a new collection with a couple more games included. That would punish early adopters.
I would love to have Dodgeball from the NES remastered in HD with no sprite flicker. Also, more teams and characters. Cutscenes, remade music and online play, if that's not asking too much.
I feel like River City Girls has had the spotlight lately. But the recent(ish) Kunio games on 3DS have been great too - so I hope that branch of the series continues too.
Tokyo Rumble and Rival Showdown were good fun and looked great - nice looking 2D sprites on a 3D plane; they could work well remade in Octopath-style 2d-hd.
I'd just like a new Renegade. Still one of the best beat-em ups ever released.
4am update? Do you people sleep lol?
@CactusMan
I've always of the Yakuza series as what a 3D River City game could be - the gameplay is similar to the NES games (besides being in 3D) and if Kunio were an adult, he might even look a bit like Kiryu. The grey suit is even similar to Kunio's school uniform.
@Divinebovine
They're gamers (so probably not) who are so invested that they run a news site about games, so. . .definitely not.
@Divinebovine Umm it was posted at 8:30 PM.
@Tasuki oh, it said 4:30 for me
That magical number of 35 again. I wonder what is so special about it...
"Kunio-kun's Three Kingdoms! All-Member Assembly!"
EDIT: I call it, Namennayo! of the Three Kingdoms
Probably the release date and gameplay for River City Girls 2.
Hmm, a period game. Wasn’t there a jidai geki game in the series prior as well? Should be interesting to see how they update it.
English version will be something like: Kunio-kun and friends beating the hell up and romancing all through the three kingdoms HAHAHAHAHAHHAHA
Let's wait for it! I'm hyped for something good
@SpringDivorce Renegade was a re-skin of a Kunio Kun game if I recall correctly
@Funneefox
Yep, US/Euro version of the original coin-op.
That 35th logo is pretty fire.
Love this series. I'd appreciate a Switch port of River City: Tokyo Rumble. But honestly I'd welcome anything from this series with open arms.
Hmmm so maybe in line with the Famicom Feudal era title we never got?
Looks like Cao Cao's hobby of kidnapping other people's wives is going to bite him when he does that to a certain delinquent.
But still no confirmation of which consoles it’s coming to?
A new game. Cool. Hope to see it physically in the West. But... Why to announce it as a 35th anniversary celebration if it won't be completed this year?
@Low It's available in the Double Dragon & Kunio-kun Retro Brawler Bundle with all the previously FC-only games translated to English!
https://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/double-dragon-and-kunio-kun-retro-brawler-bundle-switch/
That looks like it could have big potential if it comes to the Switch!
Ok, now they have my attention!
@gaga64 Confirmed for Switch - December 2021 in Japan.
@Liam_Doolan thanks!
@Liam_Doolan Dynasty Warriors-kun!
And this is coming to the US, right? .......Right? ;_;
Ok. The past two years have been a crapsack in the world but amazing for games. What is going on?!
Seriously, I can’t afford all these new games. Anybody want to buy a kidney?
(I do wish this was a sengoku era game though… still buying.)
Idk why, but seeing that trailer made me laugh. Looking forward to this.
