The cult hit Game Boy Advance titles Advance Wars titles are returning this holiday season on the Nintendo Switch.
If the announcement wasn't already a big enough dose of nostalgia for you, we've now got our first look at the box art of this upcoming release. For most parts, it's an accurate recreation of the first game's GBA cover. Ah, the memories...
While the Switch box art draws inspiration from the past, developer WayForward has given the graphics an overhaul - moving away from the detailed pixel artwork in the original titles to updated character designs and 3D maps.
When Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp does arrive on December 3rd, it'll also come packed with both campaigns (including Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising), and local and online multiplayer support.
What do you think of the Switch box art above? Will you be picking up a physical copy when the battle begins later this year? Fire off a comment down below.

Brings back memories
I Wish I had a Nintendo console.
@EveryGameBeLike
Why don’t you?
I'm very nostalgic for the now 'retro' (man, we're getting old) art style, but the new one is pretty nice too.
But Max sure did some heavy work out those past few years, he's larger than the tank now!
💾Physical Day One Buy.
Looks great!
I never played the first title so I am eager for this release. I only have Black Hole Rising and Days of Ruin (DS).
Days of Ruin is easily the best, including the sound track.
Was Days of Ruin the last one? Feels like a lifetime ago…
Going physical if only so I can have that boxart on my shelf. It looks fantastic with the new character designs.
It'd be cool if they went a step further with the nostalgia and included the original art style as a setting. Nintendo published games tend to only ever have the bare minimum when it comes to options and settings though.
@Hwatt Yes, DoR was the last one. And considering it released nearly 14 years ago, it has been out of commission for quite a while.
So great!
I have my original cart so I likely won’t be dishing out the $60. I know that’s crappy to say and read but I'm content with my copy. Now…. Will I read reviews and testimonies from the new version and reassess? Absolutely. But at this point, no plans to buy the updated version.
EDIT: The artwork looks GREAT! Really digging how they kept the original art but just updated it. Love the side by side comparison, NL
I'll pick this up on Amazon for €43-48, have the OGs on another console so can't justify a full €60 price tag
Pre-ordered, really looking forward to it.
Keep the GBA love coming Nintendo!
Man, super chuffed for this outing. Looking forward to it
where was this game in the last Direct? haven't seen it since June
I've never played this series before, looks like WayForward are really taking care of it though - I'd love a demo before release!
Dual Strike is one of my all time favourites. Never played the original. This is on preorder.
Did the originals track stats in the same way DS did?
Looks great. Pleased to see it back and fingers crossed for a sequel!
I still have my original GBA AW2 cart, but I lost my Copy of AV1 sometime ago. So I can’t wait to play the first one agin on the Switch, but I’ll have to wait for Xmas. And then it’ll have to compete with Metroid Dread (another Xmas wish). Too many good games coming out at end of this year!
@Hwatt you didn’t play Dual Strike? That was the best one IMO
I'm glad the gameplay remains unchanged, unlike Fire Emblem - which has turned into a teenage Game of Throne drama RPG.
Plug it into my veins!
Can't wait for this, I haven't played these games for over a decade and I can't wait to get into them again. The first game is essentially one of the few perfect video games in my opinion. Advance Wars is actually a great podcast game too, something I appreciate these days.
too bad they complete butchered the original's artstyle
Best release of the holiday season I expect! Day 1 for me!
If Nintendo have any common sense they'll make it a reversible cover with a recreation of the AW2 cover art on the reverse.
So where did Wario64 get this? 🤔
It looks more like something a fan made than something Wayforward would produce. We will have to see.
EDIT: Okay, so it has come from Amazon Canada https://www.amazon.ca/Advance-Wars-re-Boot-Nintendo-Switch/dp/B097B2P1N4?&linkCode=ll1&tag=ninteneveryt-20&linkId=782244c51775f43da27037faca858280&language=en_CA&ref_=as_li_ss_tl
Still not convinced as this could just be a placeholder.
Box art looks cool. Im not so sold on the plastic look of the in game graphics tho. I think its lost a little of its charm.
@RadioShadow They would never use something like this as a placeholder. It's for sure the official box art.
In fact, we DID used to have a placeholder image that was just the game's logo on a white background.
It looks nice but I like how the original looked cartoony with a slight edge.
Now it just looks cartoony.
I think it’s a fantastic cover. The 2D direction with this reboot has been really strong. I wish they’d extended it to the battles themselves!
Wonderful! Can’t wait to sink my fangs into this one!
Between this and Super Monkey Ball Mania, my nostalgia level is over 9000 right now. I love the art.
It would be really nice if they put in a 2D mode, a la DQ11. This isn't really a game thay needs 3D.
Looks nice. I’m currently playing the original on Wii U VC and picked up the second game on there as well. It probably doesn’t make sense for me to buy it on Switch — at least not anytime soon. If I hadn’t picked up the Wii U I’d probably be buying it on Switch though.
I'd rather have a port at $20. Not sure I'm into this and I loved those games.
I think the art style, including box art, is much worse, but I'm looking forward to purchasing it anyway.
@eLeightist See, In iran, the gaming market (Or market as a whole) SUCKS, an official sonic plush/action figure costs about 2 million toman, And employees get 1 million every WEEK, a normal buying session costs about 700.000 tomans, And that is KIND of a problem.
Wonderful. This is one release I can’t wait to play. Im having to borrow my kid’s lite, the og is dead and I can’t find an lied preorder for love or money…no panic….they will eventually be around.
Good cover made even better.
@Hwatt Also on TeamDaysOfRuin... pinnacle of the series gameplay wise, and I loved the abrupt shift of tone from the overcooked (but wonderful as a celebration of the series) Dual Strike.
That's actually awesome. I've always loved that anime tank flying over the hill! There's so much vibrant videogame energy in the image.
Can't wIt for these!!!
@sketchturner : It kind of looks like the GBA art was hand-drawn and coloured while the Switch cover was produced digitally.
And this is one of the reasons why I generally hate digital animation.
Hand-drawn/coloured will always win out in my eyes.
@Silly_G Also it's a lot less detailed. Seems kind of lazy to me, but it is cool it looks similar I guess? They probably could have just used the old art and would have looked better.
I love this box art so much. This is one of my most anticipated games of the year. I never owned or beat an Advance Wars game but remember playing it on a friend’s GBA back in the day. Was a lot of fun and I’m excited to finally play through these two titles with updated graphics on the big screen!
I also hope this sells really well and paves the way for Wayforward to make a new title in the series!
I need this game physically! I LOVE that box art!!!!!
I like the original box art more, but only slightly. It's a bit of roughness that gave the original art more character, though objectively, I think they're both very good. The only downgrade for me is the tank design, I liked the details in the treads, though making the cannon a bit bigger is nice.
These are really minor details that die hards and people keeping a close eye on it like me will think of. I'm picking it up-I've got a buddy who'll probably grab it and I'd love to try the co-op with him, plus I've enjoyed this style of game thanks to Fire Emblem. I'm just hoping that there's a bit more advertising for it down the line. Ideally, I'd want a small Mini Direct dedicated to the game to go over more details since that's been lacking.
On the bright side, it's at least not fighting against other Nintendo games since the big releasee there will have come out, and Big Brain Academy is a very different kind of game that won't get in its way. Just some more advertising and it should at least reach whatever not-so-high expectations I imagine Nintendo has.
Soulless/Soul
Wake me up on release date please. Pretty much my most anticipated game of the year and considering how CRAZY this year has been with releases (I’m gonna be so broke come Black Friday). That is saying something.
Love it! Really excited for this one and the look and tone feel spot on! I still can’t understand why they decided to take it down that darker, more generic route in later releases. I really hope this will do well and spawn a new series that keeps this vibrant tone.
A nice updated/modern recreation of the GBA cover. I'm not sure if I'm going to get this or not, but if I do it'll have to wait until early 2022.
Will this be one game on cart and one download? Hope not! Picking it up despite not digging the art. I only ever played advance wars 2 back then.
Everyone check out wargroove if you're into advance wars!
@sketchturner Specifically, the new look trades cartoony with an edge for cartoony with a cozy softness.
In the new one, everyone is smiling; the tanks are cuter and rounder; the background scenery has less destruction and is less busy/cluttered; shadows are softer and more cloud-like. Even Max appears rounder and more like a build-a-bear.
My all time favorite turn based strategy game.
I don't have any issues with the art on either, but my thoughts are should they have moved away from the cartoon look?
I'm playing Wargroove now to get me ready for Advance Wars, it is billed as the nearest game to be Advance Wars.
It is a good strategy game and the graphics do take second place to the gameplay, although a slightly improved look would be better.
That said I got the physical copy of Wargroove for £13 with an instruction manual and map in the box. So I can't complain. But I do understand the the complaints about the Advance Wars price.
I hope the reviews give an honest review of AW and say if it is overpriced for what it is.
I might be keen to get this, if only to actually support the series that I’ve only played the DS games through second-hand copies. Hope the local and online multi-player will also be good, I feel this has way more potential to be an interesting online game than most are considering.
As for the box art, it’s different but definitely not bad. I feel like the new art style matches the playful energy the series gave off back in the early 2000’s. There was some grit to the original but the streamlined design of the new one is also very appealing to me and I understand why they’d want to play up the “model battle” aesthetic in a higher definition to keep it more family friendly.
I still have both originals and Guides. PLEASE for G-ds sakes Nintendo, don't turn this into a waifu game of thrones look-alike
as you did Fire emblem.
Day 1 purchase, 4 copies, son and two brothers…. great memories of this on the GBA
@fafonio
Nope A friend had it but I was never a fan of the art style. I was given or I had bought Black Hole Rising from a friend and that got me into the series. Don't remember the details.
However, when Days of Ruin came out, I bought it immediately. The dark / moody / post-apocalyptic atmosphere peaked my curiosity. However the depth and stat tracking kept me sucked in for years.
I think I have 200+ hours on that game. It consumed me for a long time...
@Hwatt try Dual Strike…. I think it’s the best in the series.
@fafonio
You may be right but it's unlikely I would actively go out and buy a DS game and play it in 2021. I'd rather them put out a new title on Switch. Let's hope the series come back to life.
I really like the 2D art on game cover case rather than just putting the main protagonist 3D face on it and call it a day.
