YouTubers have been getting their hands on the Nintendo Switch OLED ahead of release, and after last week's Switch OLED unboxing from Japanese YouTuber HikakinTV, another video has arrived: an unboxing from Nintendo Prime which also features a comparison to the original Nintendo Switch.
As you can see, the OLED's screen is quite a lot bigger and a little bit brighter than the original, and although we knew that the screen would be 0.8 inches larger, it was pretty hard to envision what that meant.
Other notable changes include things we already knew about, like the sideways SD card slot and the blessedly gigantic kickstand, as well as a bit of a look at the dock, which looks quite a lot like the current dock, but is different on the back with new air vents.
Nintendo Prime says that he was sent the footage by a fan, and expressed disappointment that he wasn't able to take the unit apart to see how it all worked. He also mentioned that the unit they received already had at least one dent in it — on the mesh screen over the air intake on the bottom.
"I do not know if Nintendo's going to take this video down," said Nintendo Prime towards the end — the unboxing, after all, is not his, and he refers to the video as a "leak". "This is, as far as I'm aware, an exclusive."
By the way, we've also touched a Switch OLED, if you're interested. We liked it.

Thanks for this video, now I know for sure it's not significant enough to upgrade from my current Switch to the OLED.
It's interesting how the larger screen makes it look bigger than the original model, without actually being any bigger.
And still no news about selling white joy-cons separately, Nintendo!
I couldn’t tell which was which when I flipped ahead to a random part of the video.
@BloodNinja My personal opinion is, this is great for those who don't have a switch yet, it would seem worth it if i did not have one already, it has some neat little improvements, but for us who already have a switch, there's not enough reason to upgrade, i bet there won't even be exclusive games, this is very different from the 3DS revisions, those really gave you a reason to upgrade, this is just a missed opportunity, but honestly, could've been worse
Introducing the Nintendo Switch (No Longer a POS 2004 Screen Edition)
Looks nice, but not enough for me to upgrade. I do however want the new dock. I've used my dock once, but that was in part to all the stories of it scratching screens or warping the system form heat build up in the early days of the Switch.
However, my left joy-con drift is bugging me so much I'm wanting to use my Switch docked now with the pro controller.
Can't wait to get my hands on one! And the timing is perfect since I'll be giving my sister my old one so she could have a second ACNH island to drop stuff on and I'll just be leaving that one in the living room for anyone to use. I mostly play docked but I don't really mind playing handheld every now and then so for me the upgrade has value. Even when I upgraded from the OG 3DS to the XL that was at least at that time was a significant upgrade from the tiny screen. Re-playing Octopath and Bravely Default II with that screen will be dope!
IMO, assuming you have the budget for it, if you think you can find value in an upgrade then go for it regardless if you play handheld or docked. It's really whatever works for you.
Still unsure if I should cancel my preorder or not
Looking forward to this one. That screen is really nice. It'll keep me tided over until the next Switch.
Too laxy to watch videos. Anyone know if the Hori Split Pro works with it? (I dont know if there are small but significant changes to the OLED rails/shell)
Mr Zeke 725: Dad, my YouTube account got banned!
Dad: Sorry son - I threw you under the bus
@Edwirichuu Yeah, exactly, and that's an extremely fair take. Since I already own a Switch, there's literally no reason to upgrade for the screen alone. But for a new buyer that has the cash, sure, why not.
@Edwirichuu I agree for the most part, but I do think there's all the early adopters of the original Switch that will be very tempted too. I've had mine since day one, haven't been tempted by a Lite, and am definitely in need of a new system now - if only to have the battery performing fully again, but also a bit nervous that it may break(!)
Between BotW, Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, Stardew Valley and Smash Bros (my 5 most played games) I've clocked up a staggering (Covid lockdowns!) 700 hours. I've then clocked up a further 400 hours on "everything else". That's a crazy amount of time - like I don't think any console as ever come close to this amount for me!
So yea, I'm upgrading for sure. I feel I've already gotten value for money, and as I said, a little nervous that 1000+ hours is surely going to take its toll (and that's with the same JOY Con too by the way, this isn't the Broom Head and Broom Handle joke !!)
Looking forward to my delivery, both the bigger screen and better battery life.
Oh, looks nice! Makes me want to upgrade. I wonder if there will be another revision though….
@nocdaes I really respect your view on it, i've had my system since 2017 almost at launch and the battery isn't as great anymore, still pretty good tho, so, if mine were to break or i could not handle the battery time any longer, i personally would most definitely spend the few extra dollars for the upgraded OLED model. (or simply the switch v2 from 2019)
Pretty hard for me to get hyped about this update, especially with the Steam Deck right around the corner. The Switch desperately needs some performance upgrades, I am going to wait until they do something like that before I buy another Switch.
@nocdaes I’m replacing my launch model with one. Mine is utterly knackered. The vent on top has fallen out and the fan now makes a terrible grinding noise and vibrates so much it hurts my hands after a while. Not to mention battery life being pretty bad. I need to limp it over the finish line next week.
I’ve bought a replacement shell, fan and battery so it will be getting a full refurb once I’ve got the new one.
Canceled my preorder from walmart.com. More excited for the Steam Deck. Wake me when they update the graphics.
I just hope I can swap the internals of my hacked Switch into this one's body, but I don't care that much in the end since I play 100% docked on my OLED TV. $350 is too much for just a new screen when I could put that towards a Steam Deck and get a powerful portable PC that can play almost anything.
This seems like a questionable comparison. The picture comparison itself I mean.
How can you tell how good an OLED Screen is, if you watch a video of it on an LCD Screen?
@Nintendo4Sonic If you're in doubt you probably should just cancel it. You'll only regret it if in the end you're not satisfied with the purchase unless you can sell it easily to anyone. And there's always another chance again to buy one in the future anyway as long as there is consistent stock.
I remember the moment I switched from my launch 3DS to a 3DS XL. The bigger screen was a revelation, and I never wanted to play Monster Hunter 4 on the smaller screen again. And I'm pretty sure I'll feel similarly when I get my hands on a SwitchOLED (soon-ish)
I will get one when I can find it easily enough online and give my kids the run of my 1st gen Switch which stays docked with the TV anyway.
@Ulysses True! Even when it was "just" an increase in screen size it was enough for me to upgrade. Going back to the smaller screen was so weird. I enjoyed playing MH3 and 4 too because of the bigger screen.
I feel this is what V1 of the switch should have been. It should have been an OLED screen from the beginning, the kickstand (stupid but whatever) shouldn't have been flimsy, the dock should have had an ethernet port on it from the beginning.
Looks like a nice (although unnecessary) upgrade, was thinking of going for it but then I got lucky and manage to grab a ps5. No more big spending for a little while I think.
People can't say if you got a Switch don't get it in their opinion because it's not true.
What if people want another Switch in their household? My kid wants to play my Switch all the time, solution, get another, with upgrades.
Gah, this looks lovely. The colours really pop!
Wallet - 'No, Grail. You don't want one.'
I want one
I want one
I want one
Meh.
I was sold a lemon at launch with multiple faults and if this already has dents in it then it looks like the same cheap build quality as the original.
Hard pass.
I call my launch Switch FrankenSwitch since it has more replacement parts than original parts.
@Nin10dood haha that's an L
I have a launch Switch, who’s battery life is barely over an hour and 15mins. Seriously, if it weren’t for that, I’d stick to og Switch
That looks lush. Don’t get those who say if they should cancel their pre orders as surly by now you know what your getting? If anything it’s made me want mine more as it looks bigger then I thought. Hay Ho cancel your pre order it’ll be gone as soon as it’s back on sale.
I would maybe consider buying it… But I don't want to apply another screen protector in my life. At least not for just a slightly nicer Switch. Screen protectors are the bane of my existence. 😅 I'd rather drink a bottle of ketchup.
@xmkbest I feel you. I accidentally applied the screen protector on my phone slightly off-center, and that's annoyed me for the last 7 months.
2017 Switch owner here... I can't wait for the OLED!
Double battery life + bigger OLED screen (and hopefully less drift) is going to be fun!
All the other stuff, I don't really care about. A bigger plastic stand or a LAN port doesn't really spark my plugs.
I have a feeling the larger screen will help with a lot with indies / small UI.
Example: Hades. I love that game on Switch but sometimes I have a difficult time seeing hwatt is happening.
@nocdaes Is there a way to see the total hours played? I’ve only seen that profile bit on the Switch itself and it lists a shorter number of recently played games.
Is it worth buying the new Nintendo Switch Oled version?
Consider the conditions below, you're welcome.
You are very rich -> YES
You play a lot in handheld mode, and you are rich -> YES
You play in your TV, sometimes in handheld mode -> NO
You play a lot in handheld mode but you don't have money -> NO
You are a casual NS player -> NO
You have to choose between buying the console or new games -> NO.
It looks very nice. This actually has me excited that if they make a switch successor it will build off of this design.
Still gonna hold out for a Zelda edition. If they don’t make one I will look at the differences between the successor and the OLED and decide.
Wow, that screen looks nice. Probably not going to upgrade though since I just got my Switch a couple months ago.
If I ain't got one already... 'tho the OLED screen is great, I don't think it justify the upgrade.
Higher brightness always looks better in pictures. But I don't play my current switch at max brightness so the benefit of brightness will likely be lost on me.
@cleveland124
Higher peak brightness + OLED = better contrast. Peak brightness is important on OLED to make sure brights are bright. Even if you set overall brightness lower.
This is especially important when other portions of the frame are dark or black.
I’m also a sun so there may be bias in my response.
I play in handheld a lot so this is a must buy for me. Already got a friend who wants to buy my old Switch.
I've sold my 2007 Switch for 300 EUR and now buying the new one for 320 EUR (was a sale on Amazon.es). So the new Model does not cost that much if you sell the original, for me just 20 EUR. That's a damn good price.
@Reaast you should have got a lot more, as far as I'm aware you are the owner of the only 2007 model Switch in existence
@Reaast wow 2007 Switch
It must be a rare prototype that WATA would sell for a billion dollars
I don't need it. My current one is in perfect condition with an NES themed shell .... but I'm old and I have a hard time reading words on the current one....so any extra real estate is what I need.
I have a launch Switch, and I've been wanting to upgrade. Might as well get the new screen and dock for an extra $50.
Do yourself a favor and go buy a Xbox Series S instead of this useless oled model, if you already have a switch and want something to play games in your house, this console ''upgrade'' isn't worth it, for the same price you can buy a series S and play a lot of games with gamepass and many good indie games are included with the service and with better graphics and smoother experience.
Nothing turns me on more than a good unboxing video!
Very nice Switch! Best console getting better!
I really wish Nintendo would just sell the tablet portion. I'm gonna have to scour eBay and try and find one for a decent a price but that could be a few years.
That's a hard pass.
"the OLED's screen is quite a lot bigger"
It is? Still looks pretty comparable and not worth the price...
i am a old man, i need a bigger screen. OLED model that is
Doesn't seem all that big and not having better resolution is a big no no for me. What a slap in the face from Nintendo. I'm just sad for all the poor guys and girls that will upgrade to this model, spending so much more money for basically nothing.
I bought my Switch day one. It was one of those banana shaped editions which over time led to cracks around the air Vent (least I assume that's the reason) the back is almost buffed up and shiny due to over use. I have even had to change the Fan. Ive Never mistreated it at all. but its about time I purchase a new shiny one!
also my girlfriend wants my old one for Joy-con fit
Is that camera perspective like 3/4? If it's taken like I think it is, if you switch the Switch top to bottom I feel like they will look the same size due to perspective. I know the OLED is larger but I feel like these pictures are overemphasizing the size difference.
If the pics were taken straight down you wouldn't see the bottom of the top Switch so clearly. And the closer the bigger, that's simple perspective and horizon stuff. OK maybe not simple, can't explain it, but that's how it works. 😃
Anyway, lets see some pics of the Switch switched and see how much bigger and brighter the OLED screen is then? 🤷♂️
@munstahunta
I don't like XBOX SERIES X/S for online checking before playing, too similar games library with PS4 / PS5, don't even like Game Pass since it just only renting, not actual owning. Not worthy machine in my opinion.
Switch OLED edition is my choice for another Switch machine to buy, even worthier than XBOX SERIES X/S.
@Anti-Matter Me I don’t care about owning games I play games to have fun , and I don’t care about online checking either I have a good internet connection and unlimited download , since I bought my Xbox I played a lot of good games and had a lot of fun I wish that you will have the same expérience with your new switch oled but to have the monatary equivalent of what I have played in your owned collection I hope that you are a rich man but it’s your décision and your point of view and that’s ok.
@Edwirichuu I think it comes down to an individual level. I got my Switch about two years ago, but I'm perfectly happy to get this model for the screen upgrade. Since my current one is still in pretty good condition, I can make back most of the money spent.
For me, sometimes playing in handheld can be annoying due to certain text and UI in some games being a bit hard to see. The bigger size will alleviate that. Plus I have very fond memories of the PS Vita and it's screen, so getting that enhanced contrast ratio and colour gamut back (and probably better considering how old the Vita is now) in my portable gaming sounds brilliant to me.
For other people I understand wanting to wait and see what the next Switch brings though, it's natural to want to make your purchases last as long as possible.
I can imagine people who started with the Lite will be much more tempted to upgrade.
First new Nintendo device I'm not lining up over night for. I live miles from any stores these days...I know I'll get one eventually, hopefully before xmas.
Can’t wait to upgrade my old V1 launch model since this comes out in an ideal time. Looks great and the OLED should make that screen pop for my games.
@munstahunta Why buy an Xbox when you can just play the games on PC?
@Arawn93 Nah console is cheaper than building a decent PC.. at least games have been optimized for console. XBOX SX/PS5 is quiet powerful too.
Wow, didn't expect the screen to look THAT much larger when placed side-by-side. That's actually pretty cool.
The fact you can't hack it and therefore can't overclock it to get better performance, or install mods for games like BotW, means the improvement to the screen isn't worth it. Also, AFAIK, it's OLED but not HDR which means it could display more colours but isn't being sent more colours. It's like a 1080p display for a thing that can only do 720p.
@Arawn93 I don’t have a 2000$ pc to play games l only have a 500$ portable and the Xbox series S only cost 380$, it’s simply the most affordable way to play excellent games, and with my old switch I have the best combo.
I've actually curbed my gaming until the OLED's imminent arrival. I think I've got two launch Switches I'm free to tinker with now.
@AFCC
Then I guess you're going to be really, really sad when you see those Nintendo receipts. Kleenex?
It looks nice, as expected, but I'll take the greater pixel density and more comfortable form factor of the Lite over this. If I want to play my Switch games on a bigger screen, that's what the docked system is for.
@Hwatt
Contrast is infinite whether the brightness is high or low.
I have an Oled tv and a relatively decent led tv. The benefit of Oled really shows in a dark room. If there is light then the differences shrink. This is why Oled Tvs typically dominate movie rooms with controlled light. In a bright room, dark grey will look black. Also, you won't typically won't see blooming or other inherent disadvantages of lcd technology. I'd say if you primarily play in the dark then this will be a nice update. If you don't, the difference will be pretty minimal.
@munstahunta You don’t need $2000 to game on Pc lol. Spent less then half of that for my rig last gen so it saved me money compared to buying a One and then a Series X.
Hell the Deck people were hyping as the Switch killer ironically gives more reason to not get a Xbox system because there is your “cheap PC machine”.
@Miu It’s not cheaper when you have to buy every generation. My PC gaming rig is cheaper then if I bought a Xbox One and then a Series X day one. Then there is the Deck too that is coming if you really want cheap PC gaming.
Remember the penny test when Switch first launched to see if your dock was pinching inward? Mine passed that test but still leaves marks on my Switch’s bezel. I put a glass screen cover on day one so it’s never caused any damage and I only occasionally clean the marks off the since the gameplay itself isn’t obscured. But now you need a protector more than ever. No more bezel means the dock will be putting those scuffs directly onto the actual screen space. I’m disappointed that that’s the first thought I had at this new design.
Yuck its Nintendo Prime, please don't give this guy free publicity he's a racist and an overall jerk
@BloodNinja
You can't really see the difference of the screen quality from a youtube video. Everyone seems to be saying hands-on it's much more notable.
Gotta say, that screen is beautiful and the kickstand looks great. Heck, love the glossy look inside the dock. However, still isn't enough to get a brand new Switch. At least not yet.
Just Love how the reviewer says by legal means but can't disclose more. Sounds like NIN will come knocking at NL to find out whom stole and released before release date. This will not go good for the review and NL when NIN finds out. This is the other story that will come out. The Switch will have to be handed over to NIN and the person whom stole the Switch will have no Switch and Banned on NOS.
@Euler That says more about you, than the new Switch.
@Cia Yeah, but $350 notable? Note a chance
@Edwirichuu I still have the original Switch, so I will take the plunge this time.
Nicer screen. Double internal storage. Much better battery life. Nicer dock.
It also helps I had a 10% discount coupon + 90 euro gift card.
@Pikman Not that I found, no. I had to go through each one manually!
@cleveland124 It’s marketed as “infinite” because individual pixels can turn off. A black pixel will have a luminance of zero (0). Anything divided by 0 is infinite… I guess.
Not every panel can obtain the same brightness. Just as some stars are brighter than others…
Wasn’t really interested in this but having seen it compared to my OG Switch more internal storage, longer battery life and bigger, better screen is tempting. Could sell either my OG or Lite.
As someone who tends to turn down the brightness on my screens including Switch, I feel the OLED would be wasted on me. I'm very happy with my launch console still. More than good enough.
Great example of how unnecessary the Switch OLED is to buy. I'll stick with my original Switch, thanks.
@shinesprites you're right: I've already preordered OLED model without selling my V2 yet...
@NEStalgia
Too bad they kept the internals @ 2004.
As thought, OLED without HDR to back it up is kind of pointless.
Weird the put the oled closer to the picture as well to make it look bigger by forced perspective.
@nocdaes Interesting perspective. Personally, my Wii and launch day 3DS still work, so I'm not expecting my Switch to break any time soon. I have replaced some batteries over time though.
@UglyCasanova
Here you go: http://www.displaywars.com/6,2-inch-16x9-vs-7-inch-16x9
27% larger surface (screen) area.
@sword_9mm It's Nintendo. Give them a few years and it'll be 2015 before you know it!
@Jeronan That's nice! Honestly, yeah, go for it (but still, just 64 GB ain't much, you'll still need a microSD, but it's a little better)
@BloodNinja "...now I know for sure it's not significant enough to upgrade from my current Switch to the OLED."
You discovered this from a video that gave you no hands-on time? And, what were you expecting? This video showcases nothing we didn't know already.
Look, some people are going to desire to preorder this device and that's okay. Some people are going to be on the fence, and that's okay. And some people won't be interested, that's okay as well.
What I'm trying to understand is why some people feel the need to announce their distaste for the thing like it's some kind of liberating or motivational statement. And, It's time to get over the fact that this isn't a Switch Pro; it was never meant to be a Switch Pro and that was never promised. It is meant to be more like what the DS Lite (My favorite handheld) was to the original DS, a premium refresh, and it appears to represent that well. Just consider this the Switch v3.
I have some advice for you and anyone else who reads this. If you are on the fence, get some hands-on time before you pass judgement, and if you're not interested, just enjoy your current Switch until the sequel arrives; it'll be here eventually, we all know that.
@CircuitWrangler3 You're reading into that way too much. I'm not trying to motivate anyone LOL what a weird statement.
I was literally thanking the person who put up the article for informing me about the product.
Are you part of the internet outrage crowd?
@BloodNinja
If it's any consolation, I didn't perceive your comment as "demotivating". I thought you were simply expressing your opinion in a reasonable way.
No one cares that I pre-ordered a Switch OLED. I'm just excited and I wish to express and share that excitement with others.
Lets put it this way: If people don't express their opinions (or vote with their wallets) for newly announced products, how do we expect Nintendo to improve going forward? Whether it's positive or negative. It's all constructive feedback..
@Hwatt Exactly, and a very good point. If I hadn’t already bought a switch I would get an OLED, but I’m honestly content with what I have. I’m glad you are excited for the upgrade.
@Edwirichuu I already have a 256GB SD of course with my current Switch.
Now this is an good comparison! If the brightness levels are like-like that is.
Sometimes it even looks like the Switch OLED itself is bigger than the older model, it's impressive.
Thinking about replacing my lite with this is it gonna be difficult to transfer over to it? Am i gonna have to redownload all my 1 tb of games? Or can i switch my full micro sd card over?
@BloodNinja I said "LIKE it's some kind of liberating or motivational statement" I didn't say that's what you were doing. And who said I was outraged?
@shinesprites Well said, well said.
@CircuitWrangler3 gaslighting bro. Stop it.
