Original Article:
It seems that QuakeCon is having some reveals leaked ahead of time, with the latest seemingly emerging via an ESRB listing. An entry simply called Quake has appeared, pleasingly including the Switch as a platform.
There are multiple reasons to believe that this may be pointing to some kind of celebratory re-release of the classic from 1996. For one thing, this year's online-only 'QuakeCon' kicks off at 11am Pacific / 2pm Eastern / 7pm UK / 8pm CEST with a show titled 'QuakeCon Digital Welcome + Celebrating 25 Years of Quake with id Software and MachineGames'. A big anniversary and the presence of a studio renowned for its work on FPS games, it's subtle.
If you don't know Quake well, it was a major release from ID Software in 1996 that followed on from the success of the original DOOM, in some respects providing another notable advance in the company's technology and design. It is also renowned and still much-loved to this day for the way it revolutionised and introduced varied and fun multiplayer options, including support for the very early days of online play.
A re-release or remaster on modern hardware will certainly be exciting if it is indeed revealed later today. Playing Quake on the Switch - that's rather dreamy for some of us of a certain age.
Would you be excited about Quake getting a celebratory anniversary release on Switch? We'll be watching the live stream later and will update this article with any news.

Quake could really do with a DOOM 2016 style reboot instead of just Champions. DOOM Eternal kinda ended that sub-series so it would be cool to see Quake or Hexen next.
I'm in, haven't played this in ages so would love to see it on Switch. Hopefully that makes Quake II will follow soon after and if we're really lucky, Quake III - but I'm doubtful on that.
Now I can game like Joe Rogan!
I had Quake on the Sega Saturn, that was a great Christmas, 1997 maybe? I would LOVE Quake on Switch.
Played through Quake and the mission packs again recently and loved every moment of it. A remake would certainly be an enticing prospect, but I would be worried that they would struggle to recapture the unique atmosphere. Retaining the NIИ soundtrack should be compulsory.
What!????
Oh please be true!
Havent played Quake since 2001, had a ripped Quake 3 on my PC back in the day.
If this is true it seems we finally know Microsoft's stance on legacy Bethesda franchises, that only new IPs are Xbox console exclusive.
I would like to add my chant to the choir's chorus for the hope that this is true.
If it’s got good gyro aiming I’m in!
The only Quake I’ve played was Arena on PS2 but I had a lot of fun with it.
There is already a remastered version of Quake 2 with ray tracing. It looks incredible.
I would definitely be in on a Quake trilogy on the Switch, remastered or not. Those were some good times.
The best era for FPS games. Quake 2, 3, unreal tournament 2004, and team fortress would all be great games to bring back.
I just shart in my pantaloons 😍
The fact it mentions scorpions which appeared only in the quake mission pack leads me to believe this will be a port rather than a full fledged remaster. Either way I am very excited to have the OG Quake return!
Quake is king. If this turns out real, holy crap
@antdickens I'd say Quake 3 is actually more likely than Quake 2, but it would come out as that new Quake Live version
I would literary kill for Q2 on Switch. One of my favorite teenager games.
If it turns out to be a remaster/re-release of Q1: It has to have the Trent Reznor Soundtrack. This is one of the cases where the soundtrack und the soundscape are an absolute essential part of the experience.
Quake was pretty good. I might get it on Switch just for the novelty.
@HefHughner I hope they got the rights! Though honestly, I played this game so much without CD audio. Heck sometimes I'd just pop in the Monkey Island soundtrack for a bit of fun instead. I loved how it worked with other CDs
Just found out MachineGames released a mission pack in 2016, huh! Never realised that! More signs pointing to a port then with mod support like the Doom re-releases. So excited to play this game again!
I hope it's at least a remaster. Loved that game
@Grumblevolcano not really. It just shows their stance on remakes and remasters of legacy titles. Not sequels to them.
@Grumblevolcano We won't know the answer to that question until they release a sequel to one of the multiplatform games. They said at the beginning they will continue support for titles already on other platforms. But they have yet to announce how new entries in those franchises will be handled.
1998 quake 64. 50 pounds ! I’m there ahhh good times xxxx
I've only played Quake 3 so I'd love a re-release/remaster/remake of Quake 1, 2 and 4 along with the Mission Packs.
Surprisingly, I never played the Quake games, even though I played pretty much every other FPS around that time. I'd be fully interested in trying it out on Switch.
Also... UNREAL TOURNAMENT!
Quake to me represents how all FPS games had to be brown. So I went another way. Probably why I'm more of a Nintendo than Microsoft fan.🤷
Not too familiar with Quake but if the single player is as fun as Doom I am willing to give it a try.
@rjejr well unreal was made by the gears of war people so I'd actually argue its the other way around! Quake was on N64 at least
Whatever happened to that retro fps Dusk? It looked really cool and seemed to be coming to Switch, but just kinda vanished.
Will it have gyro controls with dead-zone?
@The_New_Butler Put the remaster on everything, then make a new shiny one exclusive to the Xbox ecosystem. Kinda wicked savvy, if you think about it.
This is one of those games that would require minimal effort for a remaster. It still looks great with the pixely low res graphics. I just hope they can license the fantastic soundtrack, it just isn’t the same without it.
Now give us a Hexen/Heretic remaster and I'll be happy.
@The_New_Butler Yep, it's all Doom (literally).
@Scapetti Never would have guessed that, thanks.
Quake will forever always be just 3 shades of brown to me though. Light brown, dark brown, brown brown. 😎
I am of a certain age, and I would be ecstatic if a port or remaster of the original Quake is coming to Nintendo Switch.
I was in high school when that game first released... GAWD
@Grumblevolcano well not necessarily. There is a big chance that Elder Scrolls 6 is Xbox exclusive. It’s only older Bethesda games and deals made before Microsoft acquisition that will be multi platform
@Grumblevolcano Not necessarily. Could simply be that this game was given the greenlight before the acquisition of Bethesda took place. Lets see what happens.
@ritouf I have it and play it once in a while. My brother in law was tossing his N64 and Quake in the trash a few months ago, so I asked him if I could have it and he said yeah.
Downloading Quake from the eShop as I write.
@Grumblevolcano but we need to remember that this is supposedly a remaster, not a remake.
Quake I and II are pretty legendary FPSs. I'll play them again if they come out on Switch.
Quake (and II) hasn't aged that well IMO, the environments are very samey and the enemy models looks downright ugly.
Doom 1, 2, 64 and Duke Nukem 3D are much more varied and the sprite based enemy "models" just looks so much better.
I think I have to pass on this one.
Quake 4 60fps 🤞🤞
Quake is on the eshop right now. Im downloading as I type. Quake series was my FPS series of choice ages ago, Im stoked. I remember QuakeWorld on dialup..... ah good times!
Quake 64 as an add on!! Playing it now!!!
@nintendolife Quake is on the Eshop as we speak
@Johnno137426 quake 64 as an addon? what do you mean? on switch?
@lovesushi that’s what it said. It’s also at 1080p quality. 4 player co op and even at split screen and everything else is on the Eshop website
@ThomasBW84 So you gonna update the article, write a new one, or just let it go? 🤷♂️

For my man @JaxonH
"Motion Aiming Ready
Improve your gunplay with an option that allows you to aim using gyro controls. The option can be used in conjunction with the control stick for the perfect blend of immersion and accuracy." 👍

Quake is on the eShop now? Is this a joke?
@rjejr Give me a chance!
@lovesushi yeah-free download that you simply select in a menu and away you go! 🙃
@rjejr
Already on it 😀
I knew they'd offer Gyro seeing as Doom 1, Doom 2, Doom 64, Doom 2016, Doom Eternal, Wolfenstein 2, Wolfenstein Youngblood and Skyrim all offered Gyro. Bethesda is on it when it comes to modern motion control schemes.
Been playing Great Ace Attorney Chronicles and I'm totally addicted. First AA game to really grab me like this. And Monster Hunter Stories 2, and Neo The World Ends With You, and Zelda Skyward Sword. Too many games.
What I'm really waiting on though, is WarioWare, Cruis'n Blast, Monkey Ball and Metroid. And that gorgeous Switch OLED screen to play them on.
I just upgraded to an LG C1 OLED TV, and it's made me a believer. Added a Sennheiser Ambeo soundbar (crazy expensive but amazing) with SVS SB-1000 Pro subwoofer to round out the new home theater experience, and I feel like... how have I been living life any other way?!!
What have you been up to? Getting in on some of these upcoming games? Think we've got No More Heroes 3, Sonic Colors, Cruis'n Blast, WarioWare, Monkey Ball, Metroid Dread, Fatal Frame, Pokémon and Advance Wars. Obviously there's other games too (Diablo 2, Life Is Strange, etc) but I'm just hitting the highlights here.
Downloading now. I haven’t played the original since the mid 90s on PC (though I still have the cart of Quake 2 on N64).
@JaxonH You know me, always working on the older games. I'm really not interested in anything coming out this year. My limited tastes have been put to the test while I wait for games like Bayonetta 3, God of War 2 and Horizon Forbidden West. But even I've given up waiting on Pikmin 4.😝 Actually there are a couple, Tales of Arise looks good, as does Kena Bridge of Sprits. And Psychonauts 2 on Gamepass on PC. Currently playing Sackboy Adventure w/ my wife, we haven't gotten to the difficult parts yet. OK, so maybe it's just the Nintendo line-up that I find lackluster for the rest of 2021. BotW 2 is obviously day 1. Pokemon Arceus looks ok but I'm not a Pokemon guy.
Still waiting to get a PS5 for Christmas so I can play TLoU2 and R&C. I think I'm starting Ghost of Tsushima next week, tired of waiting. We're taking my kid to college tomorrow, sophomore year. We got him MHS2:WoR for his birthday, I'll borrow it when he's done, probably at Christmas or when/if he comes home for Thanksgiving. So if I don't touch the Switch for 6 months that's ok, PS4 still has a lot left to offer me even if it's 8 years old. The farther I am behind, the cheaper my hobby is. 😁
@rjejr
Ya I dialed my purchases back to basically just Switch now, with the occasional Steam purchase. I got a PS5 day one but probably used it 30 hours total to date, half of which was Disney+. Did play some Spiderman recently though. That was fun.
Got my Steam Deck on pre-order. Love that thing. Between Switch and Deck, and the fact Xbox exclusives release on Steam and now even PS exclusives are starting to, 99% of the best games will be available in hybrid format WITH gyro aiming. Can basically put my PS5 on eBay and just go docked Switch with PC for TV play, with Lite/OLED and Deck for handheld play, using cloud saves to sync across TV and handheld. I'm tired of having games spread across multiple systems. Consolidate it down to just two, all hybrid, all gyro. That's what's up.
I'm incredibly excited for 3 games in particular more than most. Cruis'n Blast, which has been a game I've been following since the late Wii U era when it was announced for arcades- still can't believe it's coming to Switch. You can ride around as a triceratops, and do 15 backflips off ramps. Takes me back to the Midway classics of the 64 era. Nuff said.
But then there's Monkey Ball. Which, Idk if you know, but I'm a diehard Monkey Ball fan. I used to play the Monkey Golf and Monkey Bowling with my bro back on GameCube. I've been waiting for a Remake of the first 2 games for a long time. And this one actually has the first 3!
Metroid Dread, well, Metroid is one of my favorite series ever, besides Monster Hunter and Fire Emblem. Prime 4 and Trilogy would be great, but I love the 2D Metroid almost just as much.
There are others, but I think those 3 take the cake. Although I have recently become a big WarioWare fan. Used to think it was shovelware mini games and had no interest. Then I played WarioWare Gold on 3DS and was amazed at how addicting it was. Quickly tried Smooth Moves on Wii, and had even more fun. That series rocks! So I have high hopes for Get It Together, though I am curious how it'll work controlling characters on screen.
@rjejr
I know exactly what you mean.
Actually Doom 2 started with it.
Thats why i like Doom more, just more Colors XP
