New Pokémon Snap was, to some long-term fans that had been dreaming about a new entry in the spin-off series, a big moment in this year's release calendar. Though Pokémon spin-offs rarely - almost never - get close to matching sales of the main series, the photographic adventure has had a good start.
In Nintendo's Q1 financial results it's shown that between its launch on 30th April and 30th June, New Pokémon Snap sold 2.07 million units. An interesting wrinkle in that figure is that this only includes sales outside of Japan (North America, Europe and others), as The Pokémon Company publishes the game in the company's homeland. Nintendo has done this before, for example with Koei Tecmo publishing Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity in Japan, but with previous major Pokémon titles on Switch it's been Nintendo publishing globally.
It's highly likely that this arrangement was just for New Pokémon Snap; moving beyond that topic, breaking two million sales is a decent initial outcome for the spin-off.
Let us know if you were one of the many players that picked up New Pokémon Snap, and if you've tried out the recent free update.

The original Pokemon Snap sold 3.63 million copies globally, so New Pokemon Snap should have no issue outselling it.
This is great news. I loved this game and i hope the sales show that there is still interest in this genre of pokemon game and we eventually get a new new pokemon snap.
Pokemon stadium 3 next please.... or as it will be named.. New pokemon stadium 🤷♂️
That bodes fairly well for a sequel. I may pick this game up, as I have some mild nostalgia renting (yes, I'm that old) the first game when it was new.
Really enjoyed the original and this one has been great so far hitting all the right notes for my wife and I. Have not played it too much yet, though. It's gigantic compared to the original and I was pleasantly surprised to see free DLC the other day.
Two million ain’t bad, but kind of low for a Pokémon game, yea? Especially since this is one of the higher quality spin-offs. I’m sure Japanese sales adds another million, but I figured this game would be somewhere between 4-6 million by now.
I still had not pick up the game yet cause I'm still waiting for the OLED first but once I got that I'll get New Pokemon Snap along with it.
@RobotReptile It's a niche spin-off so I don't think sales were ever going to be huge. It's probably selling quite well compared to Mystery Dungeon?
People trying to play this off as niche seem pretty dense. It's not like we haven't seen people online begging for Nintendo to make this game for years and years and years. If it doesn't reach 6-7 million sales it's a failure.
Maybe if this continues to do well, Pokemon will give us more games we want.
@Yoshilapin People who comment online are a niche group. If they weren't pokemon SwSh would have bombed and metroid would be a 10+ million seller. Face it, we are only a small drop in the bucket.
@Yoshilapin
People commenting online doesn’t make something not niche. People online is not the mainstream.
Hopefully medium-strength sales will show that the IP has legs, but that they should develop it further (i.e. include off-rails exploration).
@Chowdaire @Yoshilapin @electrolite77 Don’t confuse the word ‘niche’ with the word ‘small’.
You can judge internal expectations by marketing spend. Luigi’s Mansion 3 is a 6/7m seller and received significant above-the-line ad spend. This received a bit, but it was primarily online digital campaigns. Thus, no, Nintendo will not be expecting 6 - 7m sales.
@Dringo I didn't mean what Nintendo expects. I meant what I expect after seeing people beg nonstop for this game for years. That's why Nintendo greenlit it. As far as both me & Nintendo are concerned, it shouldn't need any ad-spending at all to reach 6-7 or even 8 million copies sold.
This proves there was indeed a huge demand for a new Snap game, and that's the outcome.
@Yoshilapin 8 million is a bonkers for an expectation. A niche game from 20 years ago that was released during the height of pokemania and sold just over 3m copies, was never going to exceed sales of big budget releases backed by huge marketing like Luigi’s Mansion and Mario + Rabbids.
Online chatter represents just a fraction of Nintendo’s audience.
