Last week brought us an all-digital Gamescom for the second year running - in normal times it's the most attended game expo in the world, but public health requirements and considerations prompted the organisers to once again skip the in-person Cologne show.
The organisers have now issued a press release highlighting the successes of this year's online show, showing growth from its debut digital-only output of 2020. Below are some headline figures:
- Gamescom: Opening Night Live - 5.8 million viewers (approx. 2 million concurrent) - up around 30%
- Views of all Gamescom shows - 13 million viewers - up around 30%
As you can see the Opening Night Live showcase hosted by Geoff Keighley did a lot of the heavy lifting, with the remaining 7.2 million viewers being spread out across daily streams and the Awesome Indies Showcase.
Gamescom plans to welcome fans back in Cologne for an in-person show next year, circumstances allowing, though will likely keep the digital aspects going to promote its status as one of the premier gaming expos.
Did you follow the Gamescom festivities last week, and if so what did you think? Let us know, as always, in the comments.

@ItsjustAnotherGamer I disagree. Nothing compares to face-to-face, especially for a festival like Gamescom with thousands of cosplayers and other enthusiastic video game fans.

@ItsjustAnotherGamer That's why they are planning on doing both in coming years. You'll get your digital event while others are able to go in person if they chose. Options are great.
