Tom Happ's Axiom Verge 2 has suffered multiple delays, but the latest findings doing the rounds online suggest the game could be arriving on the Nintendo Switch very soon.
According to Nintendo Everything, update data for the game has recently been discovered on Nintendo's servers. In the past, there have been similar cases of updates like this revealing certain game releases ahead of schedule. One Switch release that previously leaked this way was Fortnite.
Axiom Verge 2's creator most recently delayed the game until Q3 this year - at the time stating how it would be better for it. If you are finding the wait difficult, you can always revisit the original title on the Switch eShop. We called it a "modern classic" and gave it an outstanding rating.

Indie showcase or direct inbound?
Would be a very cool shadow drop.
Hopefully an indie showcase for August and a direct for september
Calling it now- Indie World presentation is coming in a couple weeks. This, and Spelunky 1 & 2 are gonna shadow drop.🤘🏻
Cannot wait for this game. Axiom Verge really brought some fresh and interesting ideas to the metroidvania genre.
Day 1 purchase 🎶
I am excited for Axiom Verge 2, the first one gave me a hit of Metroid-like fun when Nintendo was neglecting the franchise and I was desperate to scratch that Metroid itch. Now Metroid Dread is coming, I am not as ravenous for Axiom Verge 2. I'm feeling a weird and rare feeling that Nintendo is giving me what I want and I don't need an indie to fill the void. I'm still playing Axiom Verge 2, don't get me wrong, but it is going to be overshadowed by Dread if it releases at a similar time.
@Moistnado I feel pretty similarly. I’m not really feeling much excitement for Axiom Verge 2 or other metroidvanias like Silksong for some reason, probably because Dread is almost assuredly going to check that box. Nintendo seems confident in the game, giving it the $60 pricetag and advertising it pretty prominently in the OLED ad.
But I’ve also been pretty lukewarm to indies in general lately, so that could also be the problem.
Indie Showcase soon?
This is welcomed news. Any word on when Grime is coming to the Switch?
I still don’t understand how Nintendo’s servers are accessible enough to see this kind of stuff. :: shrugs ::
Anyway, I’m excited for this! I hope I get to beat Blaster Master 3 before this releases. I’ll be hard-pressed to divide my time if not and I don’t wanna!
With or without Dread, the first Axiom Verge was so enjoyable, I am looking forward to this!
I was a lapsed gamer and played the first Axiom Verge game fresh off of my first ever three play throughs of Super Metroid. It felt like getting a sequel, and also introduced me to indie games and how excellent they could be. Will definitely be picking this up to support Mr. Happ!
Axiom Verge 2, Metroid Dread Cross over?
Oh yes please!
Maxiom Dreadverge
@Moistnado pretty much my thoughts as well. I've been hankering for it for a good while now. But metroid is only a couple months away so honestly, if it doesn't drop by early next month, I'll probably wait on it.
August 18th 2020, August 19th 2019, August 20th + 28th 2018, August 30th 2017
Indie World may be inbound in the next 2-3 weeks based on the pattern of indie presentations the Switch era.
I really liked the first one.
The only problem the sequel has is that there’s been so many Metroidvanias since (and upcoming) and that so many of those have been so great. The bar for a top class Metroidvania is now higher than it was when Axiom Verge launched. I think Hollow Knight completely upended what most people thought was possible with the genre and Metroid Dread is going to give us a high budget take.
To me personally a high quality Super Metroid clone with some very clever weapons and abilities wouldn’t stand out quite so much in 2021.
@StuTwo that is correct but for me axiom verge is still the best metroidvania after hollow Knight and the Metroid franchise
I can’t wait for Hollow Knight Silksong, my absolute most-anticipated game in 2021 from any console
Buzzing for thissss
My body is ready.
Absolutely spectacular game, I can't wait to see the sequel! I know everyone loves to fawn over Hollow Knight, but Axiom Verge is the superior example of the genre as far as I'm concerned.
@StuTwo
I played Hollow Knight and just couldn't care about the setting or the character. The worst thing was that every time I defeated an enemy, I took damage. Not a very nice mechanic. People are talking about how Metroid Dread has got to do miracles to do better than the competition, but the fact it's Metroid and I care about Samus and the lore of the series already before the game has even started gives it great advance compared to the competition imo.
I think most gamers knew this would show up sooner then later about the game.
@Cia Totally agree. Metroid Dread doesn’t have to do miracles, just shine in its own light. Having said that, it does need to be better than Samus Returns.
@Nin10dood Axoid Drerge, lol
@mezoomozaa same. My favorite ever Metroidvania, that's not Metroid (which has the rose colored glasses on it's side, so will be hard to beat). Looking forward to silksong more than Dread, cuz i don't like the look & color scheme of Dread & have a bad feeling about it. I liked Samus Returns because i liked the 3D, but not sure i would have liked it as much if that feature didn't make such an impression on me. It was also really really short, which i can imagine Dread will be, with the same devs.
@twztid13
Lol.
I wouldn't care what the called it tbh.
I've had money sitting on my account for the last 3 months waiting on 3 releases. Axiom Verge 2, Metroid Dread, and Hollow Knight Silksong. If these were the only games to release in 2021 it would be a banger of a year for games
@Tandy255
Nintendo basically stated they heard the criticism concerning Samus Returns, so I'm sure Dread will be the better game.
@Cia I think so too. I really liked Samus Returns, but it is still a 3DS game at the end of the day (and a remake of a GB game). Being on the Switch and being an original game, Dread should have the advantage.
@Cia I have basically next to no interest in the lore or storyline of games. Super Metroid told a fantastic story without cut scenes or talk boxes (that’s the ideal IMO) but I don’t need to know lore. The Castlevania games are fantastic Metroidvanias and their story is basically a one page “the castle is here, guess drac is back - grab your whip!”.
What I really liked about HK as a Metroidvania is that it has multiple routes through by design. It’s not a straight linear progression like most examples of the genre, if you get lost you can end up playing a completely different game than someone else but that’s all done very organically.
Axiom Verge has elements of that with the unknowable corrupted pocket worlds but it’s not as core to the game design as HK.
