Castlevania has been in the news a lot of late, but not for the reasons you might expect. No, Konami hasn't announced a new video game in this popular series, but it has kept the name alive via the excellent Netflix series. We've also seen Castlevania gobble up column inches thanks to the release of a demo of the Dreamcast entry – a game that was never completed.
Sticking with that topic, a pre-release version of Castlevania: Bloodlines (beta 0.5) has been shared online recently, giving fans of the game a chance to sample some of the content which didn't make it into the final product, such as the famous airship level which was shown in some previews at the time.
According to the Castlevania Wiki:
The second was Beta Version 0.5, which has been known about for longer than the previous beta and which was leaked in 2014 to the Castlevania Dungeon forums. This was a version evidently provided as a preview to game magazines prior to the game's release and offers several more finished stages than the 0.3 beta. However, these stages still differ from those in the final release in that they have several areas that did not make it into the final game, such as a zeppelin and molten steel areas in Stage 4. Several enemy and boss sprites are also different than those from the final release. Some of the original sprites from the 0.3 beta have carried over into this updated version, only to be scraped or otherwise changed in the final release.
This beta was obtained by user TARA200 and put up for auction on eBay, resulting in some images of the demo with their name plastered upon it for the auction page.
Pop over to segasaturno.com for a download link, but remember that you'll need to use an emulator or a flash cartridge to play it. It's also worth noting that this is very rough and unfinished, even for a beta, and is riddled with bugs. But hey! At least the Konami code works.
Still, it's an interesting look at what could have been. If you fancy playing the version we actually got, then be sure to download Castlevania Anniversary Collection on your Switch.

Yo Adrian! I did it!
sigh I just wish Konami would allow a quality developer to make a new 2D Castlevania game. And for the love of Belmont, please release another collection that contains the rest of the 2D entries in the series (the GBA, DS, and ReBirth games).
@MARl0 It is sad we will never get a Castlevania video game set in the year 1999.
@MARl0 Konami has a long history of mistreating Castlevania. They demoted the director of the original NES trilogy to a menial manager position at one of their game centers when Castlevania III failed to sell well, causing him to quit soon after.
It's honestly sad. This guy, Hitoshi Akamatsu, saw video games as an artform and he always tried to infuse his projects with a cinematic quality through the use of storylines and epic music. In some ways, he was the original Kojima.
@Elvie Not just Castlevania. They basically mistreat their entire legacy by now.
Well that's okay at least the final version we got on the Super NES was fantastic.
@Specter_of-the_OLED You mean the Genesis/Mega Drive.
@Specter_of-the_OLED Bloodlines was on Genesis
Amazing! I hope for new Castlevania games soon.
Cool! There was also the recent discovery of the cancelled Dreamcast Castlevania game. It's cool we're getting to see all this behind-the-scenes information.
Yooo this is sick! Maybe one day someone will dump the Super Castlevania 4 prerelease build with that one digging snake monster boss that didn’t make it into the final game.
@Daniel36
At least they sell Stuff at Gog, that makes it easier to preserve
@antonio2244 With the way Konami is right now, I don't see that happening sadly.
@MARl0 I do t know, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate was really cool.
Made from the same developers that are doing Metroid Dread.
@Scrubicius I never said it wasn't?
Gotta love some free roms 🎮 📺😁
@MARl0 Thats your 2D game.
@Scrubicius I said new 2D game. I played that game nearly a decade ago...
Between this, Super Castlevania and Rondo of Blood I think Bloodlines is the toughest. At least it's given me the most trouble out of the three.
I didn't realize this game takes place in 1917 in the middle of World War I, and you play through different European countries with that backdrop. Like in stage 4 you explore a munitions factory in Germany. Sounds wild as a setting for a Castlevania game...
@MARl0
I thought this ->. . <- would give it a away.
As I the sarcastic manner.
But hey maybe this:
