Review EarthBound - A Quirky, Cosmic Adventure Bound To Warm Your Heart
Mother!
This review originally went live in 2016, and we're updating and republishing it to mark the arrival of Earthbound in the Nintendo Switch Online Super NES library. Fuzzy pickles! Back in 1995, this second instalment of Shigesato Itoi's much-loved Mother series (as it's known in Japan) only received a western release in North America, where...

Woohooo. Are they really finally going to release this on the VC?
MUST BUY! Thank you NOA!
ESRB Rating+Hanabi Festivel+SSBB next month= Earthbound this month! Woo! =D
OMG it might be coming now! I am soo excited for this game to be released! I still have my original SNES copy but would gladly buy this game in support, perhaps MOTHER 1 and MOTHER 3 would be released in the near future?? I have imported them from Japan but would pay $$ to have them in English =]
This just made my day!
'Bout time.
Please come Monday. I haven't played this since the save battery in my cart died.
Thank you NOA!! Now just get Mother 3 over here and all will be well.
Finally.
Please let us get this soon! I want a PEGI rating...
Hmm never played it before, but obviously it's a really good game. also I kinda like how it's more of a modern day RPG, it might have a different feeling from the other RPGs. Also i like the graphic style. It has more detail and a bit more color.
Bout Damn Time Nintendo! This is a definate must buy!
Hopefully we get more of the series if this sells very good.
I wish that America could've received all of the MOTHER games without being censored or having it's original name changed. :/ Still, I will most definitely buy this game if it's released on the VC. Hopefully it'll be out by this up-coming Monday.
Nice! I always wanted to play this.
Well its about bloody time.
Oh God Finally this Game comes out i have been waiting forever.
This game is easily the best RPG in History.
Better late then never. I hope this is nintendos big gun for the Hanbai Festival.
Is this coming to Europe??
Never played EB and heard very little about it. I'll definitely buy this. Ness was pretty cool in SSBB.
Hey everyone needs to try to buy this the day it comes out nintendo will notice the success from this vc title that they will have to realease the original mother as an import game! And perhaps one day we will see mother 3!
I hope we get Mother 2 and 3 after we get Earthbound.
happy!!
plz Mario RPG ...
totally getting it looked good on my emulator but the emulator can be a pain to navigate sometimes
FINALLY!!!!
D:
I am going to have to say that at least 50% of Nintendo's choice to do this was because of everyone at Starmen.net.
Great news !
And they should release Mother 1, since it's already completly translated in english
Wow this makes me very happy..Finally 1 of the 3 games I wanted is coming out. Other 2 I want are Super Mario RPG, and Chrono Trigger.
Best game ever....
Easily my favorite game. I was so disappointed when the 64 version was canceled, was going to get one just for that.
Wow....this guy chose some great names for the things in the video. lol
@DjinnFighter
Hell yeah! Exactly my thoughts, there's no reason to hold it off since its already translated! What's there to lose Nintendo?
The only time I played this game was 3 years ago. This is one of the best games out there, without a doubt.
so when is Earthbound gonna be America bound? Mabe never
Please, please, please release this in Europe!
EarthBound placed number one, twice in a row in Nintendo's Power's poll for the most wanted Virtual Console games. NOA would be insane to ignore those numbers.
Owe it to myself to buy this, Ness is my fav in Smash!!
Also this game looks great and unique!
@Outrunner
Nice Reala(?) Icon.
Anywho, yeah, I love this game. I'm a Ness user in Smash Bros as well (just like you MrLopez). All of my friends make of me for using him, but i really dont care. He's good if you learn to use him.
I don't understand why Nintendo is being so stupid in not releasing this game. Ugh...
I just heard some an intresting rumor on wikipedia.
According to Wikipedia,Nintendo is calling Mother 3,Earthbound 3 on their finacial report. From this,it appears Nintendo might be planning to release the entire Mother [Earthbound] series outside of Japan. If that's the case then is the Earthbound game rated for the Virtual Console by the ESRB not Earthbound, but Mother 1 [or called Earthbound Zero]?
This game (earthbound) would be an awesome release for THIS Monday (June 9)
this and super mario rpg: legend of the seven stars r the only VC games im lookin 4ward 2
Dude!! You are right but... If say Chrono Trigger hit the list would you look forward to it??
Can't wait for this!!
Don't get your hopes up. Just 'cause they rated it doesn't mean it won' t be the last game they're gonna release on VC. Just look at Kirby Super Star and Tetris Attack! Those were great games rated a year ago and have they been released yet? No.
Edit: Okay, KSS will definitely not be released due to the upcoming DS remake. And Pokémon Puzzle League has already been released.
I suspect they will release this game hopefully by the end of summer, but I am sure they will release Super Mario RPG before. I have never played earthbound but it sounds good, I would expect a price of 1000 wii points since if it comes out it Japan, which it probably will first Nintendo Will find some way to charge an extra 100 Wii points to its price tag. But what do i know.... oh well back to Super Mario Bros 3 !!
i havent played this before. is lucas from SSBB in it? i hope so. he is the best person
no, lucas is in the mother 3. that is the 3rd game in the series(earthbound is the second). mother is the first game. mother and mother3 were only released in japan. i can't wait for this game, i love it!
i will definitely get this game right away when it comes out. and it must come SOON lol
i hope the game comes out soon, or even at all. but if it doesn't, i can always play it on my super nintendo.
Havent you wondered ... What if the 'Earthbound' game rated by the ESRB were actually the Famicom version being imported? (If you remember that was also the name of the Famicom game for America before it got canceled, which would be the same case of SMB the lost levels, which was released under its american SNES name) Personally I would prefer the Famicom game being imported, since its cheaper and easier to get the SNES version original cart, even boxed than the Famicom one (which, on top of that could be translated to english, and even if you got the Famicom cart it would be in japanese) or than the beta NES Earthbound ocasionally found on ebay.
aaaaahhhhhhh. then i also want mother 3(and mother just for good measure)
This Can't come soon enough! If they could translate and release Mother here too, that'd be great, and so would translating and releasing Mother 3.
Any day now, NOA... any day now...
I know practically nothing about this game. I have no experience with it whatsoever. However, as people are clearly raving over it, it must therefore be pretty damn special, so if it ever appears on the European Virtual Console then I'll be sure to buy it.
However, whoever decided to name one of the main characters 'Poo' deserves to be shot, o_o
I haven't played the game either, but I heard so many good things about it that I just know it's good. Downloading it as soon as it hits shop, whenever it hits shop.
EarthBound's great, but Mother 3 is better. Even if you can't understand anything.
The simple fact that the fans have nearly completely translated Mother 3 because Nintendo themselves have been to damn lazy to do it should fill them with shame!
I personally think that they eventually will release M3 over seas if only to try & get people to forget the fact that they really didn't want to waste there time on it in the first place...
This game easily has the best writing of any RPG, even if the storyline is somewhat incomprehensible. I also liked the music in battles for some reason.
How's the battle system for this game? I really don't care(for once) as I'm just interested in the story(also a first), as well as hitting enemies with a frying pan(why don't more games let you do that?). Just tell me - first person or third person persective? Really what I'm asking is, do you see the enemy get hit by said frying pan?
Also, I see you can name the individual characters. Boy, I'm definately going to town with that!
now this is one to get..........4/5.........im waiting nintendo
I like a game with a sense of humor and a style I like, and so long as it's playable, I'll love it! I don't even need the hype to be interested in this one. I know the combat is heavily rudamentary, however, so I'm glad I got back into turn-based RPGs, otherwise, I'd have trouble getting into this game. Sadly, I can't find a Youtube video of this game that shows combat. Can the combat scene be turned of or something, or is it just editing?
I wish a lot of these games on the vc waiting list like this one shud be put on the list like 2 weeks b4 it comes out or sumthing cuz this waiting list has too many games and i really want a lot of them like this one that have stayed on the list for a really long time u know
A great RPG indeed. Great game and good story in my opinon. I wish that they put Final Fantasy II and III on the Virtual Console cause those games were awesome!
^Yeah, like that'll happen. apparently you missed this site's article on how Square Enix isn't going to release any of their RPGs on VC (save for SMRPG, if that counts). After all, It's square-enix. They'd much rather release their high -profile games at $50 than the nice bargain of $8. They gotta milk their fan's wallets for all they're worth, and it works. I always dip right into those remakes.
For me, I plan on waiting until the price goes down before I buy into those remakes, while in the meantime trying one of the more obscure RPGs like Contact and Summon Night to tide me over. Plus, I can find the GBA version of FFVI still in box where I live, so I might try that one too.
Back to Earthbound, I finally found a Rom of it, and if it weren't 5 in the morning, I'd play it and give you some impressions, but I need some sleep! I'll keep you posted.
God, please release this in Europe too.
@Mickeymac
Another RPG that lets you hit people witha frying pan- Lunar Legend (GBA) or the Lunar its based on for Sega/PsOne YAY FRYING PANS!!
@Objection_Blaster
Hell yeah, I'll be hunting around every bargain bin I can find for it! I can't wait to hit somebody with a frying pan!
Well, I played Earthbound, and first off, all the humor and quirkyness that was promised is all there, and I love it! Unfortunately, the battles are so simple, they're insulting! For one thing, it's all in first person, which while incredibly disappointing, is still quite acceptable. The lack of animation of the single enemy that's ever on at one time is also a little disappointing. The fact that the entire battle is transcribed to you through text in order to make up for the offenses mentioned is rather annoying, but it does allow for some humor during the battles, such as telling you some of the funny things that your partners are doing when they should be helping you take down the enemy. Which leads me to the straw that broke the camal's back: you only control one character in your entire party, everyone else is on automatic! Plus, there's no way to skip the battles - I know that other RPGs don't do that, and for any other RPG, it would be acceptable, but with battles this simplistic, it actually makes sense!
I wasn't expecting FFIV here, heck I wasn't even expecting Breath of Fire II. I was expecting the battle system to have been somewhere between BoF2 and FF1, and probably more towards the lower end of the spectrum. I was not expecting role-playing for kindergardeners!
I really want to like this game, I really do - like I said, the writing is quirky and humorous, and I love every minute of it when I'm not battling. The battles are like a pair of pliers yanking out my brain stem, only to have it put back in place by the superbly hilarious writing. I've only played for about 30 minutes so far, but I'm surprised I was able to handle that much. I'll try it again some other time, maybe it gets better as I go along. The battles aren't random, so at least you don't have to always fight a lot. Good luck against the boss though. Plus all the members of my party dropped out, so maybe they'll be replaced with more competant, interactive members. It couldn't get any worse, those guys were really useless, except for the bee guy. Not a hypergenetic superbee mind you, just your ordinary, everyday bee. A bee who can traverse time and space, who can produce shields of light around your party that can block all evil, and whose mighty stinger can fell a Starman with a single thrust! But alas, he is no match for the swatting hand of a child-abusing mother. May he rest in peace.
I'll let you know if things pick up. I just want everybody to know what they're getting into if and when Earthbound comes out.
@Mickeymac
I already played EarthBound and i liked it very much.
I don't want to spoil it, but i only will say that later you will have controlable party members in battle, so don't desesperate
And belive even if EarthBound battle system graphics are simple it's not "role-playing for kindergardeners" sometimes it's really hard
Normally RPGs at the begin are a bit boring, and EarthBound is not exeption, 30 minutes is nothing. So if you "really want to like this game" try to finish it
For example my favorite moment in this game is the Final Battle, so it's really impossible to fully apreciate that game in such low amount of time.
Impossible to skip battles? False, you can run of them, avoid the enemies, and kill automatically weak enemy without trigger the battle scene.
But you pay a lot atention to little stuff, that really a good start to apreciate EarthBound
Good luck, pal
PS: It's not an ordinary bee, it's an alien PSI bee.
I assure you MickeyMac, all of your complaints about the battle system will be resolved in the next hour or two of gameplay:
controllable party members, skipping battles, multiple enemies, and at least one instance of leaving you saying "Why the hell did that enemy explode and wipe out my party?"
The hand-holding is over. Now go eat some trashcan burgers.
@MrPinguy & Biospark
Thanks, that's exactly what I wanted to hear, and I'll try to remember that as I force my way through the muck to get to the good parts. Since I won't be getting any VC games for a while, I'll have a reason to play more of the Rom.
One of the best parts of Earthbound is avoiding unnecessary battles and instantly whipping weaker enemies. It's pretty satisfying to chase enemies you once feared when they start running from you, and then proceeding to promptly punish them in less than 2 seconds when you catch up to them.
this mite seem of topic but this question has been bugging me for ages, how do you pronounce PSI is it,
PS"one"
or-PS"eye"
this is a stupid question I know but if someone would reply I would be very greatful
^
It's PS"eye", PSi (Psychic)
in EarthBound also known as PK (Psychokinesis)
gees thanks a bundle I'm even more interested in in the series now I can say it write so just to confirm its "PSY" not "P.S.i" or any thing else right?
^
Write: PSI
Pronounce: P-S-Eye
Glad that i helped, EarthBound is a good game, but don't over-hype about it, or else you can feel a bit of disapointment.
ok well I'll download it when it does come out since the only plays I've seen ness is in the smash bros games and its nice to see whats behind each charecter know what I mean
^Yep, that's what Nintendo wanted to happen when they put him in.
Nintendo of America: Earthbound?!?! What's Earthbound?!?! Uhh.. yeah... ummm... NEVER HEARD OF IT!!!!!! LALALALALALALALA!!!!!! I CAN'T HERE YOU!!!!!! LALALALALALA.....
^ I'd like for them to prove me, and most people for that matter, wrong, preferably sooner than later.
Here's the thing: as much as I want Earthbound on VC, I want the trilogy on DS way more. But whichever comes first...might wind up buying them twice ;(
I hope the Strategy Guide is included when downloading it!
That would be great!
From reading the above comments, this game has me concerned. Mickeymac said he had been playing for 30 minutes and didn't like the gameplay of the battles and the reply was "all of your complaints about the battle system will be resolved in the next hour or two of gameplay". An hour or two of gameplay? Do I want to sit through agony for an hour or two in order to get to decent gameplay? That doesn't sound right. There is no way I'd read through 50 pages of a novel that was completly boring and repetitive simply because someone assured me it will get better after a while. Shouldn't a game be fun from the beginning?
I was already going to stay away from this game because I've heard its too "kiddy" and lacks any sort of real RPG depth. Guess these comments solidified it for me.
^ "Shouldn't a game be fun from the beginning" Theorically yes, but it's a fact that a big buch of games have a boring begining.
"I've heard its too "kiddy" and lacks any sort of real RPG depth"
I played the game, and that you said sounded too vague too me.
Maybe it's because of the point of view, but i didn't feel like that when i played the game , maybe only the graphics looks like "kiddy" stuff, well for me they are charmy.
^^ It's not the most complex of RPG's, but it's far from "kiddy" and still has tons of depth.
The graphics were meant to look the way they are as a satire on modern (at the time) RPG's, with their serious medieval styles. Instead of fighting great beasts and knights, you fight...giant piles of goo and hippies.
It's awesome =P
I have the SNES cart of this. I think this may be one of the most overrated games out there. I don't understand why everyone wants it(unless you haven't played it that is). I'll admit it's not a bad game, it's just not the great game it's made out to be. I hope it does come out on VC but it is not one that I am really looking foward to.
i know you can download it for free on the net with roms and emulators these days but buying on the VC to me would be worth it for some reason. plus if this game sells again maybe they'll finally put Mother 3 on the US market
Yeah, this game has pretty much the same battle system as the Dragon Quest games, but it's still worth getting if you want good writing. If this game doesn't make you laugh, nothing will.
Please make it to PAL regions, please, PLEASE!!! OFLC?
Although I know practically nothing about this game, except the characters' names and the fact that it's an RPG, I can tell that it is a must-download (if it ever comes here, that is)
Don't worry, it should come here to Australia
I want this and Super Dodge Ball for the next Hanabi Festival.
i hear soooo much good stuff about this game... is it really that good? i mean i love RPG's... but is it as good as everyone says it is?
^
It's a good game, but some people overhype it, and others because of it, they feel disapointed with the game when they try it.
It's also a question of tastes, some love it, some like it, some dislike it, others hate it.
You will only know trying it.
But IMO, i love the game it's one of my favorites, but it's only my opinion.
Maybe you should read the other comments for an idea of it.
^
ok.. ya i'm gonna get it.... ubt i really don't like how people do that... praise things too much... it completely ruined HALO... good game... but not THAT good... but ya.. this game looks fun
Does anyone have any idea when Earthbound is coming out?
^ its coming out before christmas........ ya... i'm guessing
@Marvel_Maniac
I really only complained about the gameplay because I hated Dragon Quest( although the humorous dialogue during battles make it a lot more bearable), and because they baby you at the beginning. While it doesn't start out great, it does get better as you go along, in fact after I complained the game immediately picked up, and so far it's been pretty fun. Sure you have to wade through some $#!% to get to the goods, if you ask me this game( esp. the humor) is worth it.
Even though I've already played quite a bit, I still plan on getting it on VC, if only to change the name. BUTT isn't quite as funny as I thought it would be.
i dont know this game, but maybe i will buy, havent seen the video yet, but i'm just waiting for many games, and thinking of which to get now, and which to get later
i first thought: looks stupid, but if its good enough to get here on VC, it might be better then i thought
and i think the oldschool-games-way, so maybe....
WE NEED THIS GAME NOW!!!!
C'MON REGGIE!!! WE WAITED FOR YOU LONG ENOUGH!!!
GOD YOU PEOPLE ARE NUTS!!!!!!! I LOATHE EARTHBOUND AND FOR GOOD REASONS!!!!!!!
>
>
^ We want Earthbound because we actually ENJOY rpgs.
I heard from somebody in the Starmen.net forums that EB might not come to VC because of legal issues. It REALLY sounds like a silly rumour though.
But, then again that's starmen.net for ya.
What the hell is up? This game would sell monster numbers, no question, so why don't they just release it already? I could never get a copy of the original, so I bought a wii thinking this release was a given. Now two years later, still no release. ughh.....
WHEN?!?!?!?!?! i saw this game at a local game store, but it was 70 bucks. no thanks... the VC is my last hope!
Maybe it will be Nintendo's christmas gift this year. Or maybe it will be for a special event during 2009. they can't release all their good well known games straight away and leave nothing for the next year, remember. we should see it eventually.
@ Objection_Blaster (comment #79)
I'd be so stoked if that came to Europe. I'd be the first to buy it. I played Mother 2 (EB1) on an emulator but it's hard to enjoy a game when you don't have the control in your hands, you know? Keyboard gaming doesn't do it justice. Unless it's an FPS.
But if this makes it out in time for Christmas I'll be a very happy camper indeed.
I have a feeling this game will come out around christmas.
I'm about to give up on this one........ughhhh.....
same here, same here. I saw someone playing this, which made me want it more. drool...
WHY IS IT NOT HERE!??!!!?
please NoA, give me this for Christmas.........
I pretty much gave up on this game.
If it's not here by Christmas, I'm using a ROM.
This is taking way too long nintendo...
I think nintendo is such an A-hole they will release this at the end of the Wii's life..
How about this Monday. If not, an hero time!
Someone else on another forum i went to said that the ESRB Rating for EarthBound was a mistake and also said that Nintendo is not going to release it.
Yes i know we will have to see so don't kill the messenger as the saying goes.
Great game but doubt we will ever get it
This better come out. Amazing rpg
I've never played it but I'm looking forward to it.
I want this to come out so badly. I'd rather have a hand-held release bundled with Mother 3 to be honest however. I enjoy Earthbound so much, but I'd rather play it on the DS. I know people are looking forward to the VC release of this, but I'm tired of beating this one at home. I've all ready beaten it 3 times and it is boring sitting in front of a computer or tv playing this after so many times. Maybe people will fail to see my point of view on this, but a VC release is so indefinite and unclear, it is not even funny.
i hope this is comming on VC ... i love this game ... but hopefully it comes on europe too EARTHBOUND IS NUMBER 1
COME ON NINTENDO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HURRY UP AND RELEASE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm downloading this the day it comes out.
I think everyone is going to.
Now what we need is a Mother 3 import. Which we probaly wont get into what? 2 years?
WHEN WILL IT COME OUT ON VC I CANT WAIT COME ONNNNN NINTENDO HURRY UP!!!!!!!
I think this isn't coming......
SPEED UP NOA, SPEED UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Page should get removed.
I think it will come, that Starmen.Net thing sounds too much like a rumour. I would rather hear it confirmed from Nintendo themselves. :0
@Apocalypse
Rumors aren't a solid reason to remove page.
Until Official confirmation, or if the ESRB rating is removed etc...
the page should stay.
@Above, the game has already been said that there are some major copyright laws.
And the ESRB said that they only kept the rating because they're not required to remove it.
It's not a rumor, people.
^ If so please post a link of it, if you don't mind.
I really would like to read it, thanks in advance pal.
(And no, Starmen's Speculation doesn't count.)
My RSS feed just said it's ESRB rated again, stop teasing me VC-Reviews!
the copyright issues cant be all that bad, it was released once already, right? methinks we will see this game released one day. in some way or another.
Come on nintendo how long are you gonna keep us waiting!
I simply cannot accept that now, in the year 2009, with all of the vast technological advancements that have been made in just about every area of life, that the music in a 15-year-old Super Nintendo game can't be changed. Call me crazy, but I think we've come further than that. Sorry Ninty, I'm not buying it. If they actually WANT to release it, they could, and hopefully will.
Honestly, I don't believe that there are any copyright issues. I mean, there's really no proof, Nintendo never actually made an official announcement. So, why get so worked up?
At this rate I'll take it on either the VC or a DS remake.
I'd be thankful to be given an oppurtunity to play it even if it is on DS.
This game and some other vc gems are the reason I bought a Wii in the first place. If NOA are going to be a bunch of bitches and treat their loyal consumers like trash, whatever... I'll sell the Wii and boycott Nintendo for the rest of my life. Anybody with me?
The sheep will never bite their shepherd's hand, occipital.
I want it to come to the VC as much as you TwistedVivid but if they're gonna be jerks about this unfortunately I wouldn't mind it being released for the DS. Hopefully, it will be released on the VC but right now it is doubtful.
I wouldn't mind if EarthBound was on the DS, but they'd probably make it like the Super Mario 64 port to the DS. They would alter the graphics, content, and soundtrack. It's perfect the way it is, and that's how it should stay. I just hope the 300th VC game is EarthBound. I have a strong feeling it is, but you can never be sure.
LOL!! Ok Shinnok. You just made my day.
@Shinnok.
According to this website 309 VC games have been released so far.
I just went to the top of the website, then I place my mouse cursor over "Games" then clicked on "Out Now".
When I scroll all the way down I read, "Showing items 1 to 309 of 309."
in america and europe combined.
I do really hope it does come it however unlikely. Its one of the few RPGs that I have played to death that I would download again.
Why is this still on the coming soon list?? They said this won't be released! EVER!
^ So you trust rumors hein?
Do you even read the other coments?
It's a rumor, until oficial confirmation this stays.
That would be cool if they released it as the 300th game after all this copyright nonsense. As if to say Ha! Ha! We fooled ya! Now that Majora's Mask has been announced it could be either. Or neither!
^If that will appens.
it would be more that we folled ourselfs.
There is still vain hope it will come out...
@ MrPinguy
It's confirmed, this game won't be released! Starmen.net had an interview with Nintendo, they know everything!
@MrLopez
Could you give us a link please.
It should be interesting to everyone here that want to read it.
(And please say that isn't that joke interview they made for 1th april joke one year ago >_>
This one here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRQkXJAcKHo
Because it's the only one interview i can find.)
From Starmen.net the best Earthbound source!
I believe them...
http://starmen.net/ebvc/
Oh that!
Well that's not an interview, and thats the thing that everyone already knows.
It's just speculation (and well suported with solid facts)
But as much i think that they might be right, that's still no official confirmation.
Starmen.net is not Nintendo.
Yeah your right, but it I just hope they will release it some time... I'm already looking on ebay to buy the game, I can't wait any longer!
I wish this game would stop popping up in my "coming soon" RSS feed every couple of months, it's giving me false hope, lol.
1 site causing uproar like this, is it to tease people? or didnt they watch the date? which isnt 1st of april
we'll see what the official source will do and perhaps tell us about this game and the VC
it's named "Nintendo"
I don't believe the rumour maybe it's the piracy checks that Itio put into the original cart thats taking Nintendo so long to emulate it. And plus that was starmen.net who are you gonna trust them or Nintendo?
^ Somehow i find your theory more credible that Starmen.net's.
That piracy check is a pain, it erase all of your save data >_>
Really? Come on, really? Earthbound is a really good game. They would get a lot more buyers on that then on a lot of other vc games they are releasing. Wow... people are stupid nowadays.
hoaaaa cant wait for this game
@laskecap they rnt releasing this remember..
Come one Nintendo!
When are they releasing this on the WiiWare? DOES ANYONE KNOW?!!
THERE NOT?!!
Maybe we should take this out of the coming soon section. It's just too painful to see time after time.
I believe this game will come to the Virtual Console. Want to know what I think of those lawyers who sued Earthbound? Microsoft fanboys jelous of the Wii success in disguise. One way or another, it will come. Trust me.
I hope you're right. I wanna try this game out.
ah Earthbound if by some miracle this comes out i'll buy it in a heartbeat
This is without a doubt the greatest game of all-time.
its not coming out due to pop culture references! stupid beatles!
it has been announced, and people still say it won't come to VC
only cuz of a simple fansite
i'll believe you if you can give me a link to nintendo's announcement, and i mean a real link, no fake ones, like lots of fansites and their rumours
@ Kurachi: You're right. Once a game announce or rated with an ESRB rating will be released. Why do people believe that it'll never come to the Virtual Console? It's more likely then let's say, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles In Time (Questionable at best.). It is likely to see an release, so don't panic unless and offical announcement comes with related negitive news.
For now, I'll check out some news about Earthbound.
Can't wait until this game comes out! Instant download for me!
@marioman221: That's the spirit there!
If this is going to come out I wish it would soon because this was a great game and it deserves to be revived on the vc.
OH well I already have it on my snes! The only way to play this game is on a good old super nintendo!
it wont be the first game i'd buy, since i saw some other games better for me, but i will buy it after bought those
I wonder why this is taking forever to be released.
@cheetahman91: Regardless of what people say, Earthbound is likely to appear on the North American and Japanese Virtual Console (Europeans, not so much). However, the game is under legal issues with lots of copyright issue they Nintendo needs to sort out for the games Virtual Console release.
I'm sure Nintendo is doing that right now.
Considering they'd release a 60Hz version of this in Europe, since it was never released over here, it would be an instant buy for me.
WE NEED RELEACE NOW
Give it up, this game shall never come out again
@SSBBFan: It would be too expensive to work out the legal issue's for this games VC release. Nintendo would loose money.
@WhoKnew: Everyone lose money at some point, I understand that they are a business, but releasing the game on the Virtual Console. and turning it into a series can benefit them in the long-term.
Just because they lose money initally does mean they'll go bankrupt because of one game.
If NOA didn't care, we wouldn't have and ESRB rating in the first place. And while NOA claim this as an mistake, I believe they have a reason for Earthbound's ESRB rating.
I bet that if the lack of Nintendo games on the North American Virtual Console coming out recently has a reason, it might be because they are trying to get the game onto the Virtual Console.
While I do think the arguement should end here, we'll never know the truth about it's state until A) Earthbound is removed from the ESRB ratings (It's still on) or B) The game is released on the Virtual Console.
I can't call an official end because when you think about it, we really don't know what going to happen with the game.
lol, still talking about a fansite.... show me where "Nintendo" said it, so that its official that it wont come
besides, it still is a "rumour" (take dictionary to understand that word :S)
and nintendo will get enough, money, since europe never got it, and most people with smash bros games, wanna know more about its characters
most rpg's will be sold very good, so lose money? nah, far from it, cuz those who did play it and liked it, will buy on VC... most of em do, i guess
Earthbound's not coming. Deal with it.
Then again, it would be awesome if it did come to NA...
@soniczelda dude: If the game is never coming, why do we have Micheal Jackson's Moonwalker on the horizon for a Virtual Console release?
If Sega can put a licensed game on the Virtual Console which actually had legal issues that could have prevented it's release, then there is no reason for Nintendo not to release the game on the Virtual Console. They have to do it.
On top of that, while NOA said themself that the game ESRB rating was a mistake, they still have it on, probably proving that it wasn't a mistake after all and they are going to release it. Also, it is a Nintendo franchise and still is, making it's release likely if not guaranteen.
Also, Nintendo made no official confirmation that the game was not coming. They promised and I believe they will deliever.
I rest my case, me an Kurachi will never change our minds about it's VC release.
as i said: its announced, so it could come
if i make a team with people who like to make a fansite with rumours, people will believe us, but now that this story is still a rumour of some fansite, and worse, its still been announced, it can get on VC unless nintendo "official" says it wont happen after all
It would make an awesome release for christmas week. Especially since I've never played the game.
@Kevin: Yeah, but considering that it has legal issues and we are not sure if it's coming out next month in Japan, we'll probably have no chance in hell.
However, I do predict an release next year, just because I'm optimistic.
I WANT TO SEE GIYGAS AGAIN!
@196: well, next year is long, 52 weeks, so its not special if it comes next year it just would be a bummer if it wont
i never played the game itself, but saw something funny about SSBM's fourside history at youtube, part with moonside
HOWEVER, it contains spoilers, so you might not wanna see it until you've done it yourself, i saw it and it looks cool
i'm an rpgfan myself, so i should get it one day
Hey guys. We might get Earthbound in 2010 after all. I heard from someone that Nintendo was sorting out the issue to get the game released on the Virtual Console.
Why many of you guys gave up, I'll never know. Sure it has legal issues, but it can't be that bad.
I really hope you heard right. That'd be awesome. I'd love to give this game a whirl for once.
@ Super Smash Bros. Fan1999: Where did you hear this?
My fave game ever. In fact I'm listening to music from the game right now Im that obsessed.
Hope they don't release this at the end of the wii's life span
@geno94: I'm predicting a mid-to-late 2010 release for this game.
I am not a jealous person. I am, however, keen on playing EarthBound/Mother 2 someday. It evaded me for years. The first time I played as Ness was when I played Super Smash Bros. for the N64 a decade ago.
I wish they would release a trilogy with all the Mothers for DS.
@Snipes: I don't think that's going to happen if we don't get the game on the Virtual Console. It probably won't happen anyway because the creator is no longer involved in the series.
Sorry for double posting and all, but it looks like Nintendo Life has finally put this in the right place. Now you people can stop complaining about the game being in the wrong section. But isn't it weird that it has an ESRB rating still? Some people call it an mistake, I'm not sure if that's true or not. We'll have to find out.
However, I'm still treating this as an Virtual Console page.
i hope it'll come, they did mention it in a video before the wii was released
it may not be an announcement, but could be a tip
keep your hopes up, but dont expect it to come, its just possible
Lucas??
Please exercise more brain power when posting - Mod Team
lol, funny video, but think about it, nintendo themselves never said they cant release it, i bet after all the commotions of starmen, they would say something to tell us its true, if its true
i must admit they at least should tell whether its true or not, about what that site said
remember: starmen is a fansite, not related to the official site's of nintendo, and they had no real announcements of nintendo
who knows, maybe it'll show up, and once it does show up on the VC,. i'll be laughing for all fans, and at starmen and the others who say its true that it wont get on the VC
as for now, we just gotta wait
they do know that alot of people like to try it since the smash bros games
You can hate me if you want but I don't think it's coming to VC. Nintendo's not gonna take the risk when they got all these legal issues going on! Even though I would like to see it I just don't think it's gonna be released.
have you seen the issues being true from nintendo?
it has been released on snes before
and i dont hate someone just cuz he/she/it thinks it wont come to VC
nothing is official about earthbound coming to VC or not able to get on the VC
1 more thing:
it is a "rumour" from a "fansite" remember those 2 words
if its true, then nintendo will tell us, there's still hope as they havent done that by now
but we'll see
Bring to Scotland maybe?
@212 i hope so, as this will be an instant download for me
i've been watching youtube videos of the game, and the more i watched, the sooner i wanna play that on VC
OMG i really hope this is real that earthbound is coming on VC! =)
we can hope, but we gotta wait, i guess
it'll be 900 points for EU, but i think its worth it (never played it)
Earthbound has way more pop references than MOTHER. I bet that the original NES game will come first. I really hope so!
This game will pretty much be a forgotten piece of history since Nintendo isn't reviving it.

I know I'm late but did you hear about this?
@Brando67854321 Believe me, i've known since the day Itoi released those tweets, I actually just came here to question why only Japan is getting a free Earthbound trial.
FINALLY!
@NintendoCat14
IT'S OUT NOW!
One my favorite SNES video games.
@ChinSpin You are aware that Earthbound is Mother 2, right?
My favourite game
