SturmFront - The Mutant War: Übel Edition came out on Nintendo Switch earlier in Spring, but publisher Red Art Games and developer Andrade Games certainly got some attention by confirming there'd be a Wii U eShop release. It was originally planned for May, but after a delay it now has a final release date of 2nd July; it'll cost €9.99 / $9.99 / £8.99.
As you can see in the trailer for the Switch release, below, it's a top-down twin-stick shooter with a lot of explosions. If you combine DOOM, Wolfenstein and top-down Contra levels, then put them through an Indie blender, this would be pretty close to what you'd get.
Of course the Wii U eShop has had a mini-revival recently courtesy of the E3 reveal of Metroid Dread. As the official 'Metroid 5', Wii U owners have been snapping up Metroid: Zero Mission and Metroid Fusion to catch up on the series; Switch has the option to catch up on the original NES Metroid and SNES classic Super Metroid via Nintendo Switch Online, while 3DS is also home to Metroid II: Return of Samus and its recent remake Metroid: Samus Returns. Can SturmFront topple the classics on the Wii U chart in early July? We'll patiently wait for the system's eShop to load and find out in a few weeks.
So, a new Wii U release in 2021, why not?

Say what you want about Wii U, but stuff like this always amuses me. In a "how much longer will this system get games" kind of way. Kudos to indie developers who keep bringing games to the system.
Yes, I do like my Wii U and still play it.
Life in the old dog yet then! Still play on this console, love it and a real shame it all went south Good to see it's still being thought of
Finally, the four year drought is over.
The WiiU is still set up and used in my household and will always have a special place in my memories. Years from now people will look back on it with the same fondness the likes of the Dreamcast has. I will buy this the way I buy any WiiU release to show my support to the developers who are keeping the memory of the system alive.
I still play my Wii U now and then. Glad to see it is still getting some support. Great system.
@bluemage1989
Yeah I'll get it for Wii-U too. I still play the Wii-U a little bit each week. Like you said, I like to support it too. I think the last one I bought was Shakedown Hawaii.
Sturmfront! Hyped!!!! The only new game for WiiU owners hahah.
Nah just kidding.
People still play the wiiU?
The WiiU was great, nothing beat playing Black Ops 2 while laying in bed.
Sadly my Wii U just died yesterday. 😭😭😭 I plan to get it repaired ASAP.
I'm waiting for my B-Day to buy a Wii U. I'm REALLY looking forward to playing the original Splatoon and Mario Maker!
My Wii Us are hooked up and used frequently.
This new game looks good. So I went and watched a few promo videos on Steam. This promo video is toned down considerably.
I like that the devs are supporting the WiI U, but I will have to wait and see if this is my cup of tea.
Most recently been playing Sonic Racing Transformed and XType+.
I was thinking of getting 6180 the Moon.
Good. Means the shop will be still be around.
Glad the Wii U is still alive and kicking even after the pandemic.
My niece and nephew have a Switch, but they like to play Wii U when they visit. They prefer Mario Maker 1 over Mario Maker 2.
I also blew their minds showing them Wind Waker HD. They only know Toon Link from Smash.
Everytime i boot up my Wii U i am getting sad because the Miiverse is gone :/
Also on the best handheld Vita!
@Sunsy I agree, live my WiiU and will continue to play it. There are especially some games better for the WiiU than other systems as well including the switch also. As for stuff like this I’ll probably double dip for it, they can claim this is like whatever but this is a Super C meets Ikari warriors mix of a game and will definitely be one to sport in my WiiU along with the huge catalog I already have on there with my external 2tb drive lol.
@koekiemonster vita is far from the best handheld. If it was then it would have done way better than it did.
BOTW2 should be a Wii-U exclusive! 😆
And it's a really good game! The Wii U needs all the good games it can get.
The Wii U gets a lot of love and for a lot of good reasons. But one thing Wii U fans never talk about is how horrible and slow the interface is. Booting up, navigating, changing settings, moving games to HDD etc are all painfully slow. I'm way off topic but for me the user experience is one of things that keep me from leaving it set up permanently. It's just not a nice feeling to use it.
That's one thing the Switch massively improved on. Interface is too simple but at least it's quick.
NES Remix! Another example of creativity, exploration, and ingenuity when they were not having tons of success.
Any chance of a review of the Wii U version? (I'd genuinely love to see that)
@Splodge the interface is slow (but still faster than my Xbox 360). Tbh, my only complaint with the Wii U is that you can’t change the system settings on the screen but only on the gamepad. Why they didn’t change that so that you can do it with the pro controller is beyond me, though I suppose it would mean that a lot of gamepads would be banished to a box forever. Though thinking about it, it wouldn’t be the first peripheral/ Trojan gimmick they’ve abandoned after a while (Rob the Robot anyone?)
@Tandy255
Nintendo seems to do their best work when their backs are against the wall.
The Switch is a massive success, and that success has largely piggybacked off of many games that are either derivatives of the Wii U or brought nearly straight over from the Wii U. I am sure they got some good stuff coming, but up until this point, they have been on cruise control.
Still play my WiiU all the time. Lately more often wii games but WiiU games get it plenty of play. Honestly prefer it over the switch.
Mr. Fuggles, I am wondering if this game would interest you, given the, uh... distinctive boss featured in the last nine seconds of the video above.
Purely on an aesthetic level, of course. @Mr-Fuggles777
what is this wii u is this the new switch NL has been going on about for past 3 years looks a bit of a downgrade to me to be honest. But credit to devs for brining it to dave that still plays his wii u
@Sunsy Like the Vita. This looks more like the top down levels in Contra to me, which is a good thing.
@COVIDberry Ok, so I wasn't the only one that saw that.
Love the Wii u and find holding the gamepad comfortable
The Wii U still gets use in the house and even got a new game pad battery not long ago. I have debated replaying Metroid on it, but to be honest I still need to finish Prime 1 & 2.
And it’s missing my favorite Metroid game: pinball.
@Arkay The Switch is definitely the spiritual successor to it. It's very obvious if they had the technology then that's what they would have developed.
@gmacgamer1234 I'm sorry to tell you that Nintendo shut down Mario Maker 1's servers back on Mario's Doomsday (March 31, 2021)
And it is not just this game! Regina and Mac World will be released soon on Wii U digitally too according to Diplodocus Games Twitter account!
@john_lennon999 hmmmm very interesting
Great to see all the Wii U love in the comments...
I'll tell you what, it's certainly worth keeping the system even if you don't play it. They will only be increasing in value going forwards...
I wonder if BOTW 2 could run on the WiiU
I’m new of the few who never unhooked our Wii U and it has been getting used again lately for some guitar hero and donkey Kong country returns, since that was the best one.
Even played some punch out and r-type this morning. This game does not interest me, but I’m still happy devs are out there trying to support it.
I used to not have a Switch for a while so the newest console I had was a Wii U. I am glad the Wii U is still alive but I do wish I wish it was getting a lower rated game though if you know what I mean.
@tseliot I completely agree.
@Dirty0814
The Wii U was a great system. Loads of stellar titles that continue to get Switch ports. Had they given it a better name (without Wii in the title to confuse consumers) and a sturdier tablet, it may have done much better financially
I wonder if they make enough sales to make it worth it?
Trying to remember if i bought the metroid games on wiiu now.
Great news for the 1,000 people that still have a Wii-U 🤪
One of the best things about Wii U was Miiverse.
I hope it works in CEMU.
Still got my Wii U and when the mood strikes I'll keep playing it. If you think it's a bad system you weren't around for stuff like sega saturn, Virtual boy or Atari Jaquar. Dark times indeed.
Oh and Wii U had a Virtual console where you could buy Nes, Snes, N64, GBA and turbografx games and they weren't tied to some online subscription service either.
Any system with all that available on it can't be bad! Heck a modded one is even better! You can put anything from NES on up to Wii U on there making it the ultimate Nintendo retro box!
@COVIDberry that boss looks like she's going to be a "handful"!!
Glad they got a date sorted, i was checking for info through May and June to no avail. Will be picking this up.
The game looks like crap. Games like this are usually too hard (in the wrong way) and repetitive for my tastes.
@Mr-Fuggles777 You are quite correct, sir.
Apparently the mods didn't approve of our entirely wholesome and family-friendly discussion of Gillian Anderson a while back. So, if the green... lady (?) above is fair game, we'll have to pay our respects that way.
@Zeldafan79 It is my belief that any console that can play The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild natively inherently cannot be considered a "bad" console.
Also, I have always wished that the industry would have dedicated one more generation to 2D/2.5D games during the 32/64 bit era. The hardware of the time was just barely capable of 3D and considering that developers would have just come off the 16 bit era they could have taken 2D games to new heights. It was a missed opportunity.
In my opinion, the Dreamcast is where the hardware was ready for some good 3D games.
@Awesomebird25, I totally forgot... DANG IT!!!
@GMACGAMER1234 At least at the moment, you can still download courses that others have uploaded in the past. Especially if you know the course ID and/or you can still find them randomly too. I downloaded some levels today.
Ultra Dolphin Revolution made 36 levels that I am currently downloading. Nintendolife did an article on it back in March and those levels are still able to be downloaded. Just search "Ultra Dolphin Revolution The last levels" in Nintendolife's search bar.
I believe you cannot upload any courses. However you can still make levels locally. So the game still has some value if you own it.
Physical release or not interested… oh wait this isn’t a switch article 🤦♂️
I still have my WiiU hooked up.
Nintendo Remix
Nintendo Remix 2
Black Flag
X
Twilight Princess HD
Wind Waker HD
Minish Cap on TV
Metroid Prime Trilogy
And a whole host of other games on it.
Oh, and let's not forget the Best WiiU game ever made:
Bumpy's Party!
(remembers having had often played and enjoyed a Rayman Legends game on a Nintendo Wii U system of mine on a daily basis (including the day of this writing) for several months)
I love the Wii U. ZombiU is hands down one of the best gaming experiences I’ve ever had.
@Spider-Kev No joke, pretty fun party game with unique concepts
@C-Threep
Yup! It's great! Great blind buy! And what sold me was the free dlc for "life" and the low introductory price, where it would get more expensive as more content was added!
That is how ALL games should be!
Great to see, but this game was hugely disappointing.
This article mainly reminded me to get the GBA metroid games on virtual console.
(quotes previous message of mine on this page)
"(remembers having had often played and enjoyed a Rayman Legends game on a Nintendo Wii U system of mine on a daily basis (including the day of this writing) for several months)"
(makes mention of most of the playings having had involved certain (weekly and daily) Internet challenges)
I still play my Wii U frequently. Mainly Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate and Fatal Frame 5, but now that Fatal Frame 5 is coming to Switch, I'll be interested to see how they handle the camera mechanics. It just fit the Wii U perfectly.
@Sunsy The fact that this console still receives games is pretty cool. I honestly play my Wii U more than my Switch. It's crazy really
