While there are (arguably) more bad than good movie adaptations of games, there are some out there that are fun despite the pitfalls of the genre. When trailers emerged for the Dynasty Warriors movie ahead of its theatrical release in China and Hong Kong it certainly showed some potential; it was produced by HMV Digital China and had multiple delays before finally arriving this year.
At the start of this month Netflix confirmed it'd add the film to its services in Asia, and last week the word emerged that it's also coming to territories such as the US and UK on 1st July; that's some weekend viewing sorted out, right?
It looks like a fun movie, with admittedly low-budget effects while nevertheless tackling the crazy scale of combat in the Musou games. At least by watching the film you can spare your Y button from damage by putting together combos in a game like Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity.
Are you planning to check this out on Netflix?

Already looking like it's gonna be the best Video Game to movie adaptation ever made.
I saw the trailer on Netflix, I was wondering if someone had just taken the name for a separate Three Kingdoms film because it was fairly dry. Then someone uppercutted someone into the sky, electric guitars kicked in and Lu Bu glowed red. And all was right with the world.
Already seen it, the movie is a good action romp, just don't over think all the missing details in history and the game it glosses over. Definitely deserves more eyes on it considering it's unsuccessful launch in Asia.
Looks hilarious. I'm in.
I saw this on the July schedule and was wondering if it was a coincidence, or if it was based on the game, since it seems to have been produced in Hong Kong. Looks alright, I’ll probably watch Resident Evil over it.
Maybe this time the enemies will attack. Than waiting to be slaughtered like a sacrifical cow. Masou logic somehow.
First I hear of it. Definitely going to check it out.
Let’s be honest, the Netflix name isn’t really synonymous with quality movies. It allows for B movies to be made and shown and one in every ten is watchable.
This still looks better than the 84 Adam Sandler films it has to watch.
So another movie based on a PlayStation 1 fighting game but not from Hollywood this time? Looks good hopefully the story goes well.
"feel the Power of my maaaaagic"
Will add this to the list of things to watch on Netflix when we sign up for the month of July to watch Godzilla Singular Point and the Troll hunters movie. Oh and Castlevania and Witcher. We haven't had NF in a couple of years.
Watched several bad movies of late, 2 w/ Jackie Chan - "Bleeding Steel" which looked like it was based on a bad Manga but apparently wasn't - think the live action Last Airbender movie compared to Avatar - and some even worse and weirder one co-starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. So we're primed for this.
Reminds me I still have to watch Mortal Kombat, my HBO Max subscription ended days before it released. Maybe when season 4 of Westworld releases. Or season 3 of His Dark Materials.
Edit: Just watched the trailer w/ my wife, actually looks really good. Haven't watched a good one of these flying mystical swordsmen movies in a few years now. It is on the list.
It's gonna be like the game, we know it's gonna be trashy fun and we still buy it anyways!
Also interesting to hear Cantonese audio in the trailer, I think there were some Hong Kong actors in there too.
The trailer reminded me of Sauron blasting through Numenoreans and Elves in the prologue of Fellowship of the Ring, I look forward to 90-120 minutes of that.
Being 100% honest here, I don't think a hyper realistic movie would have been a great target for Dynasty Warriors. Otherwise, it would have been Dynasty Warriors in name only. So I am kind of stoked to check this out.
