If you were one of the many people enjoying PC gaming in the year 2000 (the same year we saw the release of Rare's Perfect Dark on the Nintendo 64), one of the titles you might have played is Valve's original online team-based FPS, Counter-Strike.
Although this game never got released on a Nintendo platform, French YouTuber Fewnity is now using the Nitro Engine to recreate the original Counter-Strike on the Nintendo DS. The latest build shows off the new touch-control aiming system.
It also provides a brief look at the iconic map 'de_dust2' and you can see an early build of a weapon along with some sound effects that have been ripped from the actual game.
The creator has previously released a few other videos (of earlier builds) - showcasing an early look at bots. At the moment, they look more like something out of Minecraft, but obviously, it's still work-in-progress.
The plan is to continue adding more features and eventually publish the game source code at a later date:
What do you think of this project? Did you play the original Counter-Strike during its prime? Leave a comment down below.

I loved playing this game with friends growing up. I don't it would be as good on DS... But if I could have played in the DS I would have.
Did you know that the DS in Nintendo DS actually stands for Door Stuck?
It's Awesome.
I definitely want to play this if I was 12 years old in DS era.
I feel like a version could be made to run on DS hardware. But I don't think an FPS would be fun with DS controls. I can't play an FPS without either a full gamepad or keyboard and mouse.
@SorridoSnake Sadly I cannot heart this comment twice.
That's cool. I remember making a photoshop concept art for "CS:DS" way back in 2004, and posting it on a Nintendo forum, and fantasizing about the possibility of it becoming real.
That would actually make people pick up a DS.
Very cool! would have made planning lanparties a whole lot easier back in the day! No more carrying those massive monitors everywhere.
@liam_doolan I think that’s de_dust2, not de_dust
@Friendly Ah, yes - of course!
We've come to the point where FPS Doug is nostalgic.
I tried CS online for about 10min back in the day.
I got completely owned (or should I say pwned). It didn't help that my country had basically crap internet back then plus a high ping to any server. But I was still crap regardless 😅
@Yosher Glad someone spotted the PP reference.
@SorridoSnake I thought it stood for 'Dumb 💩'...
@Liam_Doolan I read that line in my head in his voice, even.
The original DS (and even 3DS) had so much potential for FPS. I would have loved to have seen timesplitters or something like Perfect Dark on there. The CoD games were "okay" for what they were, but the system was completely capable of a half decent story driven FPS with a few touch screen centric elements etc.
Edit: i remember wanting a "hired guns" remake or even something like the 80s "Aliens" game were you had to pick marines on the touch screen to switch to them. The Halo game looked promising too and the Mech Assault game was pretty much the tech for, i enjoyed it apart from the touch screen hacking.
DS stands for Dual Screen.
I can dance all day 😉
@Ardisan I thought it stood for "Developers' System"? 😉
The touch screen controls reminds me of Metroid Prime Hunters. Loved playing that game online competitively! Even joined a forum of hardcore players where we would 1v1. I was also obsessed with 100%ing that game, getting all scans in singleplayer for the exclusive profile background that you could show off online.
I would love a remake, although I just don't have a pro controller for proper gyro aiming.
The Switch is primed for retro ports of old competitive shooters, honestly. Proper optimization is the main barrier I guess.
@Heavyarms55 I remember I actually played call of duty modern warfare ( I think?) On DS, it was ok. Like a first gen PS1 shooter. Strange remembering that.
@AlphaElite Oops its actually Double Screen
