With just over a month to go until the launch of Mario Golf: Super Rush, Nintendo has dropped an all-new overview trailer to teach us all about the game.
The video goes over gameplay details, including techniques like curve shots and spin shots; reminds us about the optional motion controls; teaches us about some of the unique strengths on offer from individual characters, and more. You can watch it for yourself above, or check out this written overview if that's more your style:
· Speed Golf: In the new fast-paced mode Speed Golf, players tee off in unison and race through the course to sink the ball as fast as possible. It’s important to avoid the course’s various hazards and collect items that regain stamina while sprinting to the ball. Players can also use Special Dashes and Shots to swing victory in their favor.
· Battle Golf: In Battle Golf – a more strategic variation of Speed Golf – nine holes are in play at the same time. The first player to score three of the nine holes claims the victory, so it’s key to stay ahead of opponents or risk losing out.
· Standard Golf: In Standard Golf, every stroke counts and the lowest score wins.
· Golf Adventure: Solo players can go from rookie to pro when enrolling their Mii character at a country club in Golf Adventure. While interacting with familiar Mushroom Kingdom characters, they can learn how to play and take on a variety of challenges. Gaining experience makes it possible to level up the character, which can then be used in multiplayer modes.
· Simple controls: Simple button controls make it easy for new players and seasoned pros alike. It’s as simple as taking aim, choosing the shot strength and sending the ball flying. Additionally, it’s possible to use motion controls by holding a Joy-Con controller like a golf club.
· Useful tools: Curving a shot is an effective technique to avoid hazards, and putting spin on the ball affects how it rolls after landing. Several features are on hand to help conquer the course, including a shot gauge that adapts to the angle of the slope and a scan that makes it easier to read the terrain.
· Tee off with family, friends and familiar faces: Players can choose from a cast of 16 characters from the Super Mario series, each featuring different strengths and equipped with their own unique special moves. Pauline, Chargin’ Chuck and King Bob-omb will make their first appearance in the series. Players can hit the fairway with up to three others, both locally and online, in different modes.
· Lavish locations: From standard courses to courses with special hazards, every round of golf is different. There is a variety of six locations to choose from.
It also gives us a quick look at the roster list, online play, and a number of the available courses; 16 characters have been confirmed in total, as you can see in the image below.
Excited for this one? Let us know if you're planning on buying Mario Golf: Super Rush when it launches on 25th June with a comment below.

I still need to know what kind of splitscreen it has for rush mode.
Never thought I'd be so hyped about a golfing game. Most likely a day-one purchase for me.
That selection screen looks incomplete... I'm guessing either updates or DLC will fill the ten holes there.
Chargin Chuck is a random choice that I can get behind!
Looks like there’s quite a bit of content but the environments themselves look sparse
I do miss playing the Mario Golf series. Besides, I need to keep showing the love for Waluigi, the real star of the Mario side games.
Looks great. May just buy this since I can get it for $30 at launch.
Since the eShop listing mentions DLC, I suspect we'll get more characters for some time after launch. I'm pretty pumped for this game!
Looking forward to this one
Battle golf looks awesome!
But the environments (and especially the grass when zooming in on a put) look a little bland. Is there a reason for that as far as anyone knows?
Chargin Chuck but no Koopa Troopa? Or Diddy Kong? Or even Toadette?
Who is that lanky guy in purple? I looked in Smash but couldn't see him anywhere..
Hm. I dislike golf as a sport so I might pass on this game, but I do like the fact that Pauline is in the roster for the second sports title after Mario Tennis Aces. I wish the people who buy this game the best though, so here's to more characters in the roster!
Chargin' Chuck? Really? Hahaha Football man play game that isn't football haha. Come on now.
@Friendly I completely agree. Mario Golf on 3DS looked prettier than this blandfest. At least the gameplay looks good.
Mario Golf on 3DS is one of my top 3 played games on that system when it comes to hours put in. I have high hopes for this switch release but I also think speed golf won't be nearly as fun as just playing standard. I don't know it would be like buying a baseball game and having the Home Run Derby mode hyped up over the actual game of baseball.

Chargin' Chuck in a golf game.
I love Nintendo.
It looks alright but I will wait for reviews as it may be that the SP content is only in line with what we got on tennis (not enough imo)
This looks terrible and the roster is terrible. Seems like Camelot has forgotten what made their GC/GBA games so great. It's been over 15 years and this is what they come up with? Disappointing. I'm tired of gimmicks.
@pixelpatch Not seeing the split-screen worries me. My friends and I are dying to finally play a new Mario golf but Nintendo has been sneaky with their multiplayer options like in Animal Crossing and Splatoon. Could you imagine if for Mario Kart they said 'wanna play local? Sorry no more splitscreen, bring your own switch' so I hope they won't do it for Mario Golf
Some of the gameplay clips I have seen look alright. I am not really a golf fan but I always looking for something different,
Edit:
After watching the full trailer this looks really good and quite deep as far as gameplay. It feels like Wii Sports.
3DS Has this fantastic Tournament Mode, PLEASE let it be here.
You could setup private tournaments with friends and replay the courses as much as you liked to try to get higher on the leaderboards, it was a great competitive mode to play even when friends weren't online.
This actually looks pretty cool.
Looks a little too gimmicky. I'll wait for reviews. A lot of games now seem made for the first 5-10 hours and aren't fun after that.
It looks really good in my opinion.
The only thing I don't like is the number of locations.
Six locations? As in six courses?
I want more variety!!! The original on N64 already had six courses and those were never enough. Especially because the back half was to hard for just a nice relaxing round of golf. I played the first three to death and always wished for more back then...
The previous trailer was kinda meh, but I think this one just sold the game for me
@Joriss Exactly, im really worried about it
@Saints Knowing Nintendo, they might add something like that in a future patch because it's probably not in the base game at the moment and they might want people to be playing online more and those content updates might entice people to play longer.
I am excited about this. I love Mario Sports games.
@Low_ink It'll probably be like Mario Tennis Aces where you compete in monthly online tournaments to unlock characters.
These game modes look like a nice variety and a lot of fun! Battle Golf could be hilarious.
Excellent trailer and looks promising.
This trailer just leaves me wanting an update on Sports Story…
I wish we could just pick a Mario character and play as them in the story mode instead of having to play as a mii.
Looks really good! And not just because King Bob-Omb is playable but that definitely helps.
Was always day one for me, now even more convinced.
sorry EA . this looks to be the best golf game on the market. Looks like the switch has another big hit on its hands.
@Fujimoto-San I don’t like it either but Mario Golf was fun.
HOPEFULLY they expand the roster and add a few more courses, but no doubt this is a day one purchase for me. Didn’t the 3ds version have more than just six courses?
@michellelynn0976 I agree Nintendo does better sports games the EA ever could.
Wow, I mean I'm getting this because I love golf games but there are red flags everywhere. 6 courses? Hope you enjoy buying 4 more for $20 as DLC. Story mode sounds extremely limp, probably as bad as the 3DS version which only let you play a few courses. Graphics look meh. Courses sound boring. Online doesn't seem as robust as the 3DS version. Very worrisome
That woman’s voice was like nails down a blackboard.
@rockodoodle 10 courses in the base game, 6 as DLC.
I'm maining waluigi, and there is nothing you can say to me to change my mind.
Pre-ordered from Gamestop. Can't wait for it to arrive in 6 months time.
This is Giving me Mario Baseball vibes (NGC/Wii). and i'm all for it!
Whew! I'm a huge Mario Golf fan and this looks fantastic! The courses look a lot nicer and more unique than what we saw in the reveal trailer. Additionally, the character roster looks cool too. Love seeing random additions like King Bob-omb and Chargin' Chuck. The RPG-like story mode seems to be a fresh of breath air as well. And speed golf looks like a ton of fun, although I'm worried that it won't support local multiplayer.
All that aside, one of my biggest gripes seems to have been addressed in this new trailer. I was afraid they simplified the controls to be automatic-only, meaning you only use the shot meter to determine power and not accuracy. However, around the 1 minute mark you can clearly see multiple instances where the shot meter resets after determining the power and it shoots back up again for another input, which I assume is a manual mode for accuracy. Not technically confirmed but man it sure seems that way.
Overall, great trailer and I'm hyped for this game even more now!
@rockodoodle I believe it had about ten different courses, with a few being DLC. I could be wrong though as I haven't played the one on 3DS either. I guess it could be some fun, but I think I might wait for some reviews or a new soccer or sports mix of some kind.
@vyseofhr lol! I had the impression that she smoked 50 cigars before present the trailler.. hehehe!
btw the game looks nice.. but ill wait the reviews before jump.
but a new mario strikers woulbd a no brainer.
Looks great, I haven't preordered but I'll definitely consider it!
Mario Golf 64 is probably my favorite game of all times. I am not a golfer, but I just thought it was a perfect game. So easy to play, yet so difficult to master. You hit button once to begin your swing and then hit it again. However, this new version seems like you only hit the button once. I'm sure it will still be a great game. See you on the green!
My wife and I are really looking forward to this, Toadstool tour was one of our most playes Cube games.
I'm hoping that it has pass the controller/ switch multiplayer as I don't really want to buy 2 copies for our Lites - if that's the case will wait and pick them up pre owned to stop Nintendo getting any money after being so greedy.
Still no special golf outfit for Yoshi (or DK). I'm very disappointed.
Also leveled up Mii characters confirmed for vs mode, which is probably enough reason to stay away from online since that'll probably be filled with overpowered Miis.
I hope I'm wrong on that but this absolutely ruined Mario Tennis Open's online on 3DS and I fear it'll ruin this game as well.
Otherwise the game looks decent enough. Unfortunately Mario sports games haven't been all that good in recent entries (unless you count Mario Kart which is as good as ever, so long as you don't count Tour). I'll probably still pick it up though because it looks fun in chunks here 'n there.
Just hope it's has more meat on its bones than the tennis games and has good story/ career mode.
The Fact in King Bob-Omb's special, he jumps in a cannon!
I can't wait always been a fan of mario golf series.
There are loads of golf games but mario golf is the best.
Day 1 for me
Looks brilliant
I think we have to have a discussion over what "juicy" means.
Day one purchase. Switch needs more AAA sports games.
@Yorumi
Agree. Just seem like gimmicks too me that most will quickly lose interest in.
@Yorumi I agree with you. I am still getting it, but I had similar thoughts. It looks like it’s more geared towards multiplayer. That’s great, but I don’t have many friends to play with. At least there’s online.
Looks great. Mario Golf games are always fantastic fun. Could be another quality Switch hit incoming.
Yay Rosalina <3
Hope we can equip her cyan gown too.. just like Mario Golf 3DS.
Cool to see Pauline and King Bob-Bomb, but Boo really needs to start being King Boo every time. I don't see why you wouldn't have the Luigi's Mansion tie-in there. Ditto with Captain Toad instead of Toad
I would have liked Toadette, Birdo, Sprixie Princess, or Petey Piranha over Chargin' Chuck.
A lot of the characters look so great in their little outfits, I have no idea who I want to play as.
I have four switches for local wireless play. But paying this much for golf will be a difficult pill to swallow.
I’ll have to see what e3 shows and then decide
I woke up to this and to a Game Builder Garage finally being on stock again. Pre-ordered and pre-ordered. Today's gonna be a good day.
P. S.: Nintendo Life Open!!
@sixrings My kind of switch owner, i still hate that this is even necessary for some games!
@pixelpatch same but on the there hand I hate split screen. The bigger issue is no download play like what was available on the 3DS. So this game will cost me $200 to play it the way it's intended versus $50. I guess Nintendo is winning.
To me the environments look lifeless. It’s Mario, there’s a wealth of background features they could have taken inspiration from, instead to me, it looks less alive than previous generations of their Family Golf games and certainly the 3DS Mario Golf
Chargin' Chuck seems to have not gotten the memo on what sport he was invited to play.
It seems to be a pretty good game indeed, but honestly, I would prefer Camelot to make a new Golden Sun... Oh well, I guess we can forget about the return of that series. It´s pointless to even think about that now
This is looking pretty good! I hope there are some unlockable characters as well as some DLC - and fingers crossed for some new courses alongside them too.
@Snatcher Waluigi will be my main too. He was hilarious to use in Tennis Aces and is a good all-rounder.
Come on, Hori, out with that Golf Club accessory!
@sixrings : The Switch really should have included a Download Play app as standard rather than requiring that devs produce a completely separate app on a game-by-game basis simply to replicate that functionality.
I was never interested in playing a Mario Golf game, now this however changes my mindset completely. It actually looks fun.
Is it just me or did nintendo ripe off golf story with the golf adventure mode.
Looks really fun. Really liking how all the golf courses seem to be min-sandboxes rather than explicitly linear paths.
Hopefully the story mode isn't super short or easy.
@FlashmanHarry Golf Story was heavily inspired by Mario Golf for the GBC that had an RPG mode for a non-Mario character.
I am looking forward to Sports Story!
I hope they add something like the ring mode from toadstool tour on the gamecube.
@Longondo depends. The gamecube one has many "generic" settings but they look more detailed. I expect more on the switch right now, but I suppose it all depends on the controls and course design...
Day one!
Excited
@Tandy255 Thanks for that. I never knew previous Mario Golf's had a story mode. The only one I ever played previously was the one on the 64.
Someone tell me why is it that Nintendo tells us that they won’t make new games for old IPs because they don’t know what to do with them, but then they go ahead and cycle out Mario sport games with dumb gimmmicks?
Oh thank you for this gem, Nintendo! There’s been practically nothing to play on your system for over a year. Real happy for a Mario Golf game. Should keep me busy for months and months.
Blah
@sixrings Yup, it sucks, i buy most of my games physical secondhand but it still end up costing me an arm and a leg
This Mario Golf Super Rush rollout & layout gives me a slightly more robust version of the Mario Tennis Aces vibes so far. I'm sure it'll follow a similar formula of timed monthly highlighted modes for competition/co-op, character & outfit unlocks etc.
Mario Golf is fun. Hope they mix up the environments, terrain & weather whilst wacky-ing it up with Mushroom Kingdom motifs, hazards, optional power-ups etc. and yet still remaining very skill-based. Mario Sports games are best when they check most realistic simulation at the 1-1 flagpole and infuse their arcadey-ness more for a unique take on athletics.
Also please have a variety of modes, minigames, unlocks, characters, cosmetics, options and customization. Mario Tennis Aces while great in it's core gameplay foundation was severely lacking once you got through Story Mode. That game is pretty much reduced to the same (sometimes barren) online matches now with little else to do if online isn't popping.
I hope this game does well so we get more sports entries on Switch. The Mario sports games are really underrated. Mario Golf, Tennis, Strikers, 3-On-3 Hoops, but especially Mario BASEBALL/SLUGGERS. I'd also love a robust, online redone Mario Sports Mix collection featuring other sports for Switch!
But fingers 🤞🏾 Mario Super Sluggers ⚾ & Mario Strikers ⚽ are next!
... Wun can only hope.
@Joriss Or, to put it another way... "Wanna play local co-op? Keep buying Mario Kart 8, to maintain those evergreen sales!"
Had no desire to play this until seeing this video. Looks sweet!!!
