We weren't blown away by Nintendo's long-awaited Direct back in February, but it turns out that they were keeping a lot of their Hot News under their hat for today's Indie World presentation instead.
One of the biggest surprises - and we know it was a surprise, because they kept it until the very end and did that whole "oh wait... what's this?" rigmarole - was the reveal of Oxenfree II: Lost Signals, a sequel to the beloved Oxenfree. (OlliOlli and Oxenfree in one Direct? Come on now, Nintendo.)
Oxenfree, the debut game by California-based Night School Studio, was released in 2016, with the Nintendo Switch version coming later in 2017. It's consistently topped lists as one of the best narrative games on the Switch, with its undertones of horror and the supernatural elevating it far beyond just a "walk and talk" game.
Oxenfree II looks like it'll use the same kind of aesthetic as its predecessor: lots of triangles, teens, and terror, with new character Riley returning to her hometown of Camena five years after the events of Oxenfree. Investigating strange radio signals, like in the first game, is the name of the game - and it looks like Riley might get more than she bargained for.
Unless she bargained for a hole into another dimension, in which case she'll probably get exactly what she bargained for.
Oxenfree II: Lost Signals will be coming to the Nintendo Switch in 2021.

Oxenthree made me cringe laugh
More Oxenfree? Yes, please!
(OlliOlli and Oxenfree in one Direct? Come on now, Nintendo.) LOL
I quite enjoyed Oxenfree when I played it when it came out on the Switch. It's not something I'm dying for more of or anything though for whatever reason so I didn't get too excited by this announcement. I'm sure I'll likely end up grabbing and enjoying it though.
I had some intense goosebumps as soon as I realized what it was. I adored Oxenfree. Am very excited for this.
Never thought this would be the type of game that got a sequel, but I really loved the first one. Really curious how the sequel will improve on the formula of the first
Okay, -this- caught my eye as Oxenfree was one of those games I picked up on a whim pretty much and did not regret doing so.
Wasn't keen on the first game. I've even played through it twice hoping the proper ending would make up for the first run through. Nope.
I heard mixed reviews on Night School Studio's 2nd game, but I absolutely loved Oxenfree back when I played it. Really hoping this can live up to the first one!
This game looks right up my alley... and it's a sequel? I've seen Oxenfree but didn't know what it was about. So basically this trailer gave me two games to check out. Nice.
Best game shown (imo). Shame there was no games like Baldo or Eastward. :/
I bought the 1st game along time ago in a sale. I still haven’t played it yet. It’s another game in my back log
Yeah, liked Oxenfree too. I'm up for some more. Good news.
hell yes hell yes hell yes lets GO
I quite enjoyed the first game! Still think it's some of the best voice acting in all of gaming.
I loved my time with oxenfree. So I decided to play through it again, and it was even better! I actually felt rewarded going through it a second time. Great game. I’m a sucker for this genre in media tho.
I'm intrigued that this is a direct sequel featuring the same protagonist, because she undergoes some, shall we say... profound changes by the end of the first game.
Oxenfree was great. Really cool concept with fantastic dialogue, especially for an indie title. I’ll happily pick up the second game.
First game is still sealed.
@SwitchForce
That’s some MONEY right there..!
