Monster Hunter Rise already topped the charts in Japan in its opening week - shifting more than 1.3 million physical copies and shipped four million units globally, and now Capcom has revealed its latest milestone.
All up - more than five million copies of the latest entry are now out in the wild (this includes physical and digital sales), with cumulative sales of the series exceeding 66 million units as of 31st December 2020, since the original game's debut in 2004.
If you've not already got this game, what are you waiting for - we gave it an excellent nine out of ten stars and described it as another "stone-cold classic" for the Nintendo Switch:
"New mechanics, monsters and a gorgeous setting make Monster Hunter Rise a new high-water mark for the franchise. The Wirebug, Switch Skills, Palamute and carefully thought-out monsters shake things up enough to make the game feel fresh for hunters who have previously spent thousands of hours with the series, and while the package could be slightly intimidating for newcomers, it's arguably the ideal place to get started if you're serious about getting into the franchise. And, with a peerless four-player multiplayer experience, the new Rampage quests are a blast. After spending some serious time with the game, it’s very easy to say that Monster Hunter Rise is one of the strongest entries into the franchise to date, and another stone-cold classic for the Nintendo Switch."
There's a new update scheduled for the end of the month as well - this will bump the game up to Version 2.0 and add more monsters.

Monster Hunter Rise looks to be the fastest-selling Capcom game ever on a single platform.
Not for me but good to see.
mmm yes. Seems this game has exceeded Capcom's expectations or has met their expectations.
Hopefully we see more Capcom games on switch because I am buying their games on switch for support
I really, really want to get into Monster Hunter. I really do, especially with how gorgeous Monster Hunter Rise looks. My problem is that the game has a steep learning curve.
@ModdedInkling It's not really that bad these days. MH Rise has a minimum of the clunky mechanics and resource management gameplay that tend to put off newcomers, and the wirebug mechanic allows for faster, more dynamic gameplay than previous entries.
Moreover, Rise is geared toward shorter play sessions, so it's not the sort of game you'd have to dedicate hours to playing at a time.
Getting used to the feel of the combat in general will always be a bit of an adjustment, but that's true of any game.
So if you're actually interested in getting into the series, there's no better time than now.
Literally can’t find a physical copy here. Started out looking casually and now with determination and it’s just totally sold out everywhere. With that pent up demand I think it could sell another 3 million in the month of April.
I tried the demo and the games not for me. Having said that, I'm glad it's selling well.
Thought that it would bearly compete with wirld
It took a minute for me, but I’m glad I stuck with it. Super feeling the Insect Glaive. It does take a minute to get into, but once everything comes together... it’s too good to be real. I’m a new fan.
That’s good to hear. I try to put in as much playtime as I can into it.
I just got the game today and I'm loving it, I i'm trying to get better at soloing hunts so I'm trying to play the story by myself, I'm LR 3 stars so far and I'm loving everything so far, I have stuck with my main long sword, but I'm thinking of trying charge blade if its has had any changes in this game.
Sakurai: And it's all thanks to me!
Must get through my back log before I buy another game ugh….
I'll only buy this game if I can confirm that I can get through the entire game without gathering missions. Otherwise, I'll stick with God Eater 3.
@samuraicop
I wouldn't be surprised if it stays a console exclusive. Monster Hunter is massive in China, but they still haven't really gotten into the console market. So the PC release is mainly for them. It's also a loop hole for exclusivity deals, as console makers don't see PC as a competitor.
I'm totally betting that MHW2 will be exclusive to PS5 and XB with a PC release a year later.
@alexybubble
To progress through the story you will be given roughly 6 missions each rank that are considered primary missions. Of those 6 or so, you only have to complete about 4 of them. All primary missions are straight forward single monster hunts.
Gathering and transport missions are optional side quests that will unlock better food at the cafe, armour designs, gear etc.
@alexybubble EDIT: Only three of the key quests are gathering focused in sp, and even then, you usually don't have to complete ALL of the key quests in a rank to advance the plot.
The game is VERY focused on getting you into the action quickly.
It's a fantastic game. At first there was something about the pacing that I didn't like, the action felt rushed and stressed compared to the old games, but as soon as I stopped using the palamute, everything clicked. There are still a couple of choices I disagree with (especially the armour system from World), but in total this is a major step up from World.
I decided not to buy this game until I got my hands on all the MH amiibo that nintendo and capcom distributed poorly in latin America... So I bought the amiibo in amazon Japan to get this game afterwards ❤️ I really wanna play this game
Hope the Resident Evil "for Switch" gets same AAA treatment and attention and its not just another Revelations Spin Off
Ive been glued to this. Half way through the 5 star quests now and its awsome albeit starting to feel alot harder. Its defenately thr most accessible MH to date. The wire bug and the mount are a godsend for getting about the map and taking short cuts. I dont think i could go back to the old ways now after playing rise.
It would be interesting if the game collected data of how many monsters were slain collectivelly!
No Walmart or Bestbuy in my city has even gotten any to sell. All EBGames are sold out. I refuse to buy digital because I re-sell my games as soon as I'm completed to recoup as much money as I can, so I'm still hunting for my copy.
Its a good game and I'm glad it's selling well as there's plenty of people playing so.you can always find a match up online.
I do think sales have been helped by the lack of releases on Switch - its the first big release of the year and theres nothing else really announced apart from a zelda port. I only picked it up on release because I didn't have anything else to play
@Slowdive 1. Slowdive is a great band
2. No this doesn't prove that at all. This is coming to pc however.
Great game.
Makes you wonder why more 3rd parties aren’t busting a gut to get quality games on switch.
@Mr-Fuggles777 No releases on Switch is becoming a bit of a meme at this point. Jan/Feb are traditionally light on releases for all consoles anyway, but off the top of my head we've already had Mario 3d World, Persona 5 Strikers, Bravely Default 2, Crash Bandicoot 4 and Hitman 3 on Switch as well as Monster Hunter as relatively "big" releases. Sure, if your only buying 1st party games that are not WiiU ports then maybe you have a point, but to say there are no Switch games releasing is just not true.
@dmcc0 of course I'm only buying exclusives on Switch, why would I want to buy the worst version of a cross platform game when I have other consoles.
Q1 is generally light, but what about Q4 last year? Where were the big holiday releases
@Freddyfred,
After the success of the monster hunter games on the 3DS I was pretty sure it would do quite well, and with the high software ratio on the Switch this always had potential, but I do see where you are coming from, as it seems to be Nintendo first party games that are performing well on the console.
Well deserved, a great MonHun game so far!
@quinnyboy58,
Because most of them do not sell that well, now of course if the third party developers are only releasing stripped down ports later than the games initial release date, then this is hardly surprising, and of course an easy excuse not to port more games.
I am surprised considering the Switch's success and large install base, that more third party developers do not design exclusive games with the console in mind, although there is a lot of politics involved with this, and most studios just want to develop for the latest graphics tech, also most major third party developers just have to many ties to Sony and Microsoft now.
@Mr-Fuggles777 So no releases that interest you personally? That's fair enough, but you didn't say that, and not everyone has the luxury of multiple consoles and even those that do might pick up games on Switch for the portability aspect.
We have no idea how the pandemic has affected game production in general so it might be that some of those games that were due for Q4 might come out this year. Nintendo have tended to announce games relatively close to release recently, so we really have no idea what's coming this year. No announcements doesn't necessarily mean no games though (although, equally likely that it could!).
And well deserved. It's been a while since I was so addicted to something.
@alexybubble i believe you can. Ive done the story and dont believe any gathering quests were mandatory for me to advance. I think all on the quest that let you move up the tiers involve hunts. Also the gathering quests are super fast now as everything is pin pointed on the map for you.
Tried demo but couldn't get into it! Uninstalled and then redownloaded demo for 2d try weeks later but still no luck! It looks like a lot of fun though. I will probably get it when its in a decent sale and try again lol third times the charm 😅
I've been playing it and been quite enjoying it. It's good to finally be able to get into the series!
@ModdedInkling like others said MH Rise is incredibly easy to get into! The village story quests are a breeze! Many of hunters girlfriends got hooked on the game because of that.
It has honestly become one of my all time favourite games, and I couldn't get on with World....
Holy crap is this game good! No wonder it's selling well.
@Mr-Fuggles777 I prefer to buy my ports on switch because portability is a bigger deal than resolution to me but that is the beauty of choices
@Balta666 with gamepass and Xcloud I can have portability without the compromise for a small monthly subscription. It suits me but im lucky enough to have super fast Internet
@Mr-Fuggles777 fair point. I don't know if it is my internet that is not fast enough or if my standards for lag free gaming that are higher than normal but I gave up on cloud gaming on mobile atm
The Nintendo Switch is accumulating one of the best video game lineups of all times. Plus so many titles are selling multimillion units on the system. Its astonishing to say the least.
@dmcc0
Facts. I was wondering how long it was was going to be before someone came in with such out of crap and nonsense. To be fair though, I'm glad to see it. As you know something must be going over pretty well when someone rushes in the spew such garbage.
@Mr-Fuggles777
I do think sales have been helped by the lack of releases on Switch
That's not the case at all. Switch has had a BANGER lineup of releases. Atelier Ryza 2, Bravely Default 2, Persona 5 Strikers, Super Mario 3D World, and then Monster Hunter Rise which is very quickly followed by New Pokémon Snap and Trails of Cold Steel IV.
And while you personally may only buy exclusives, thats not representative of most gamers, and even if it was, there's still been more exclusives worth buying so far than there have multiplats on other systems, and, for most Switch fans, multiplats on Switch are the best version of the game anyways.
There's no secret excuse for it doing so well. It's just a phenomenal game.
@Yosher @Kaldrith @Slain feel free to add me if you like. If im going to attempt some online gaming id much rather do it with some fellow NL folk. Switch code in my profile 👍
@JaxonH look at the charts, they show week in/ week out that most switch gamers only buy Nintendo exclusives.
The latest top 10 has got MK8, Animal Crossing & Mario games but no cross aplatform ames like Atelier Ryza or Perosona Strikers. Bravely Default 2 didn't even chart and that's an exclusive.
@ModdedInkling You have to be patient,and you have to choose your weapon carefully (I suggest Light Bowgun,Longsword,DB or Sns).My only problem with Monster Hunter is that I can't play anything else now(I can easily sell my 10 switch games)
@Mr-Fuggles777
Bravely Default 2 will easily surpass 1 million units. Not every game is going to be a 10-20 million seller. And Atelier Ryza 2 and Persona 5 Strikers did comparable to other versions. Not quite as well but close enough.
And Super Mario 3D World is still #1 on Amazon, and that released just before MH Rise. So any way you slice it, there were smaller games and bigger ones. A variety of all kinds.
Point is, there are plenty of games releasing and every game has its audience. MH Rise is selling because it's a phenomenal game. Not even Super Mario 3D World, an easy 10-20 million seller, could stop it.
And as you mentioned, lots of Nintendo titles are evergreens, so even if there wasn't new releases, those games are still selling like new releases so the notion there "wasn't anything competing" is wrong on just about every level imaginable.
My copy is coming in today. So can't wait to dive into it tonight when I get home from work.
Wonder what the actual sales numbers are if you count the digital download purchase with it as well.
Well deserved sales. I haven’t been able to put it down and I can’t wait for future updates
I don't have this one yet, but I fully intend to pick it up in a couple weeks! I'm overdue for a Friday staycation anyway.
I can’t believe how many hours I’ve poured into it already. Literally, I can’t believe it. I work long hours, I don’t think I’ve even had 80 hours spare since it came out but that’s what the game timer says.
Even though I'm not fan of monster hunter games but this one looks really good.
