If you're ever having a bit of an off day, may we recommend looking through old Zelda key art? Whether you have a few manuals from the old games lying around, or you just want to browse the Zeldapedia galleries, it's something that always cheers us up.
Back in the '80s and '90s, the concept art and the key art supplied as promotional materials, or art for the game guides, took its inspiration from the likes of children's choose-your-own-adventure books, and it was all the more charming for it.
Looking back on these artworks in a time where everything Zelda-flavoured is meticulously made with the same craftsmanship that you might see from a chef tweezering microgreens onto a plate, it's just lovely to see how janky Zelda once was, and how things were before Nintendo really started cracking down on the Link Style Guide. Remember when his hair was pink?!
We use a lot of these images in our pieces, largely because they're a lot more fun to look at than boring old screenshots (especially of the really old games), and they usually exist in much higher resolutions than NES and N64 screens do. Damien's particularly fond of the creepy Zelda II art, which makes Link look a bit like he's throwing a fit at a Starbucks, and Zion and Gavin are quite partial to the chaotic Majora's Mask art in which Link is looking directly at the camera, presumably while the Curb Your Enthusiasm theme plays. Plus, that iconic Ocarina of Time 3D piece is always a favourite, and with good reason.
But the greatest of them all is the art we're affectionately calling "Wide Link": an appealingly chibi version of our Hero, who looks more like a kid who just found a massive Toblerone than the saviour of the world. This Link is found in the Japanese Famicom manual for the original Legend of Zelda, a scanned copy of which Zelda Dungeon has kindly uploaded to the internet, so you can peruse it for yourself.
Wide Link is the Fat Pikachu of The Legend of Zelda: a long-forgotten, but much-beloved version of the series' mascot, before he got trim and subject to a million artistic stipulations. And he's beautiful. He looks more like a child half-heartedly auditioning for a role in a low-budget fantasy film than a hero. He could be a character from Pigeon Street with those chunky little hands.
Cor, we've written a lot of words just to tell you all that Wide Link is the best, haven't we? Well, he deserves it. He should get his own amiibo. He could be in the Breath of the Wild sequel, while we're at it. If Fat Pikachu can reappear in the latest Pokémon, we say: why not?
Please leave your love and adoration for Wide Link in the comments below, or tell us about your favourite Zelda key art. Do you have any of the old manuals? Ancient posters? Game guides? Janky art commissioned for '90s magazines? Let us know!

I was halfway through this article before thinking... is this a Kate Gray piece?

NINJA APPROVED
@pixelpatch
A shorter & rounder Link would be beneficial for keeping warm in arctic climates.🤔
I guess I don't have an attachment any particular art style depiction of Link.
I want Wide Link back. Justice for Wide Link.
Fat Link for Smash Ultimate!
Cool. I also love the older art style for many of Nintendo's franchises. The Super Mario Bros. (series) art was great. Same with Zelda. Nice article. Thanks for writing.
Link is wide
That is all
they should bring back the wind waker art style. maybe make a sequal to spirit tracks but make it play like wind waker
Isn'tToon Link very similar to wide Link?(even more with some alternate costumes in Smash)
@pixelpatch Same. Which is partly why I had to read the rest. She has fast become my favourite writer on this site. There is always a great positive feel and humor in them.
@Mana_Knight awwwww! ♥
Its THICC link.
I would photoshop the head of Link into Kylo Rens body, but I’m lazy.
Pretty sure I see Batman's silhouette in the one with Ganon's leg.
Only Kate Gray would write about this lol but we do be loving Chibi Chubby Link
here he comes

Behold, the Power of Cheese.
Lunk 😁
Loved the old style art in the original Zelda manual back in the day.
I've gotta say, your caption for the first picture of Wide Link absolutely nails it. Good job, indeed.
@KateGray I still don't forgive you for the mario farting article, your going to have to make lots of good articles like this to gain my trust Ugh one more should do (:
I always make sure there are no manuals nearby when I'm frying child fingers, always have, so no child finger grease smell on mine.
I love old, hand drawn Zelda artwork. Especially the Zelda 2 stuff. I also really like the smooth, early 90’s anime style of A Link to the Past. Not the comics, but what you see in the manuals and stuff.
Thanks for introducing all of us to the bestest boy in all of nintendo Kate!
Love me some chunky Link.
@KateGray Your articles have some great whimsey to them, always a fun read
@Mana_Knight Exactly, always an enjoyable piece and she has a very unique voice.
Back in the old days, manuals with lore and art were part of the experience. Of course games these days are much more cinematic than before, but honestly I always feel there is something missing.
I love the old Zelda art. I remember that Ganon leg like yesterday wondering if I'd ever get far enough to see what he looks like lol. Good times and great memories. I'm saddened I don't have any of my game manuals anymore as I used to pride collecting them.
Whoa the original Zelda you mean the game that largely influenced BOTW instead of Skyward Sword?
Nintendo Power #4: Link with rad MacGyver mullet.
@MeloMan Imagine if he was just a big leg
Those picture links are broken. Or is that a deliberate metacommentary?
Gimme that dummy thicc Link for 2021 🗡️
I love wee Link. I've been seriously thinking about getting one of those old manual illustrations as a tattoo. See also tiny Samus!
We need stuff like this to keep us grounded in a world that takes things to seriously sometimes.
@MeloMan @KateGray Maybe that's Ganon in a form-fitting pencil dress.
@gaga64 Whoops! Should be fixed now...
I thought Tingle was Wide Link
Nintendo needs to build out a new game using the designs of the recent Link’s Awakening. That would please us squat Link fans.
Epona does not want wide link!
@pixelpatch it’s always so obvious lol
Wide Link drinking the potion is mood.
I've got a soft spot for the original art of Zelda games, and that spot is located on the entirety of my body because I love it that much.
Hyrule Historia was a neat book and all, but the Art & Artifacts collection has so much juicy hand drawn zelda stuff packed into it.
@KateGray sorry, still not working.
Nice article though, by the way.
@Eel @KateGray I sincerely lol'd at both of your comments 🤣
I imagined he was some big minotaur monster. What I didn't expect was to (SPOILERS??)
Fight an invisible enemy while hacking the crap out of thin air. Made for a hilariously frantic fight 😂
@KateGray Thanks, I needed an avatar!
I LOVE that super dark Links Awakening art.
@Snatcher Lincc
@avocadopear excellent choice, that's my favourite one too. Drinking a potion is usually something you do while running from a pack of wolves, but in the illustration it just looks like he's sipping it for fun 😄
Wasn't LA3D Link kind of a reimagining of this style?
Wow. I'm surprised he was able to fight Ganon. Maybe because Link was fa... ahem wide, everytime Ganon tried to kill Link, Ganon would stab Link but couldn't find any organs. So, Link just kept smacking Ganon, till he passed away.
I loved the old manuals. I spent hours over years (still do) drawing the characters. Now no game comes with them. Another way the industry robs you of value. And then asks for 30 dollars more over the next few months for a game that just shorted you when you bought it. Or you can buy the 60 dollar art book, or the 140 dollar collector's edition...
I can't believe some people just download their games. It's just another way for the modern video game industry to rob you, even worse if you just pay a subscription to play games you don't even own. If that's not the biggest way to know you've wasted your time playing video games, I don't know what is. 400 hours handed over to a screen and not even a physical game to show for it? Literally nothing in exchange for your life and brainspace.
A tiny number of physical games also means no second-hand video game market, no checking out games from the library, no borrowing games from friends. It's just a way to ensure more purchases, for mostly crap games that withhold content until you pay for an expansion. Or some idiots even pay like 5 dollars for an outfit!
We are all doomed
Talking about Nintendo 2D art, I'll love a Mario Bros remake but with cartoon sprites, with Mario 2D art in the style of Mario 3D world stamps.
@KateGray
-spoiler alert Zelda games:
No- Gannon is just a giant leg! Of course you wouldn’t know since you never play the last castle.
Thanks for the article.
It seems wide link is just an artist trying to accommodate the NES Zelda 1-square link graphic. Oh dear I’m boring.
The Wii U had scanned manuals for many VC games. This might seem like no big deal, but archives of scanned manuals online could be seen as £!€^$¥...
@screechums
It’s hard to get on board with “doomed”- but to take your point further I’ll add:
It’s this way with music too...
Old CDs have little art books!
And the digital purchases both are not able to be passed on, as in if a spouse dies at 25 with a huge “Shared” backlog- or shared music/book/video library it’s gone for the other spouse (or anyone else).
Also, reading the agreement almost all such purchases have, the limited digital copy permission can be revoked at anytime by the publisher.
Sure, “they can’t reach into my xyz...” argument works (for) now, but such claims mean the one making them agrees that user end piracy is ok if the company does them wrong.
