And there we have it, Netflix has now officially confirmed that a brand new Sonic series will be launching on the platform in 2022.
From Sega, Wild Brain (Teletubbies, Degrassi, and Inspector Gadget) and Man of Action (Ben 10, Big Hero 6), the new animated series will be called Sonic Prime. It'll feature 24 episodes in total and is said to "draw upon the keystones of the brand," resulting in a "high-octane adventure where the fate of a strange new multiverse rests in [Sonic's] gloved hands."
The show was announced earlier today on social media:
It's hardly a surprise – regular readers of the site will remember that the very same Twitter account accidentally leaked the existence of an upcoming Sonic series late last year – but it's nice to see an official confirmation either way.
Dominique Bazay, Director of Original Animation at Netflix, has shared the following in a press release:
"Sonic is a beloved character and holds a special place in everyone's heart including my own. I spent many hours with the blue blur as a kid and it's a privilege to be able to bring this character everyone knows and loves on a brand new adventure with Netflix — one that a generation of loyal fans and brand new fans around the world can enjoy."
Of course, Sega recently parted ways with Sonic's voice actor, so it'll be interesting to learn further details about the show such as its cast at a later date.

YES, I WAS WAITING FOR THIS
Ugh.....please not 3d
Cool my daughter has really enjoyed watching sonic boom series
And that's why Roger Craig Smith is off the role now
We're going back to the 4Kids days of the TV cast replacing everyone in the games
Sonic Prime....
If i add with some words, it will be Sonicnova Primeval (AFRONOVA PRIMEVAL from DDR 5th Mix) 🤭
Couldn't you have announced it closer to the release date?
@1ofUs
Yeah, fr 2022 is quite a ways away
edit: but I'm not complaining that's its official
Got excited for a second then saw 3D and 2022. I'll wait for the trailer.
I hope this is funny like Boom was. I never watched it, but the clips I've seen on youtube were hilarious
Why does everybody hate 3D, I get that Boom wasn't the best but that wasn't because it was 3D that was the writers.
Interesting to see how this turns out. Hopefully it won’t suck.
I loved Sonic Boom, especially the humor, so I can see myself liking this one too.
Actually kinda curious as I thought Sonic Boom was quite funny. I'd be laughing at it's 4th wall breaking etc, whilst my nephew just wasn't interested and implored to watch PJ Masks instead xD
One of the groups working on it is the same people who created Ben10 series.
@FroZtedFlakerZz Sonic Boom was hilarious and captured the characters personalities really well. Nothing wrong with the writing at all. It was basically a Sonic sitcom. I could've done without the change to Knuckles design though...
I have a feeling this one will be more of a generic action cartoon.
What does 3D Animated imply? I understand the difference with video games... no TV's are "3D" anymore... is it implying a certain computer generated animation style?
Leaked last year...confirmed this year...release next year...sheesh..
If this is how leaks are gonna go, I don’t care lol
Sonic Prime starts before Metroid Prime 4 gets a single trailer
Optimus Prime... Metroid Prime... Amazon Prime... now Sonic Prime!
@holygeez03 yes, 3d is an art style. 3D is CGI graphics, looks like sonic Boom. 2D is hard drawn and looks like classic Tom and Jerry cartoons.
We asked for Prime so I guess that's ok?
@FroZtedFlakerZz 2D animation is objectively better than 3D. There's much more you can do with 2D.
That's debatable
@FroZtedFlakerZz This is my own personal reasoning for not enjoying 3D animation usually: the actual animation style tends to rub me the wrong way.
For an example, take like, the old GameCube Mario sports games 3D animated intros, and compare them to the Mario + Rabbids cutscenes. They're both animated in different styles and I always loved those sports animated cutscenes while the Mario + Rabbids style just annoys me, and this latter one is the style used in nearly all 3D animation shows/movies these days so I tend to not even watch these shows because of this.
Of course that's my personal reason for it and I don't know anyone else who feels the same way but there you go.
@Yosher Yeah, I'd honestly rather 2D as well I was just saying that it shouldn't be judged before we see it. If they release a trailer and it looked garbage I'd understand but they just said it's 3D.
@FroZtedFlakerZz Given that this still is the most used 3D animation style by far though I'm personally already not holding out too much hope for it. But we'll see.
Wanting to see what style and quality we get to make final judgements on the 3D. It's gotta be better than sonic boom though.
A new 3D animated series? I wonder if Nintendo would consider a TV series (rather than just movies) towards the future.
I saw prime for a quick second and well...let's just say I'm disappointed again.
It's been prime time for a new Sonic animated series.
Sonic Prime and a mention of netflix? I thought it would be about a space bounty hunter figurine sold on Amazon.
The games weren't that great, but the Sonic Boom show ruled and it's sad getting confirmation that it's dead and being replaced.
3D automatically makes it garbage. All 3d shows based on games are garbage.
@xxx128 Exactly.
If it's a Spider-verse style crossover with different Sonic universes colliding, that would be pretty cool.
From the writers of... the Teletubbies?
Alrighty then.
For a second l thought it was an Amazon prime show and l was confused there because its an Netflix original. Anyone curious about sonic's voice going to be like? I hope it won't be a bad show or have bad voice actors.
I personally don’t think 2D is inherently better than computer generated animation. I mean, I agree there are things you can do with traditional 2D animation you can’t do with CGI. But at the end of the day, it’s gonna come down to the writing and also cast. Because I’ve seen my share of 2D animated stuff that looks good. But is a bore to watch and has terrible voice acting. I’ll wait and see an actual episode before making any judgements
Tubby custard! Tubby custard!
Sonic cartoon! Sonic cartoon!
I mean, this is from the same team that brought us Mega Man: Fully Charged. My expectations are extremely low on this one. Hopefully, I'll be pleasantly surprised.
@Professorgenius Oh well that´s enough to know what to expect
No trailer? To bad. The Title itself is okay, but... it feels more like the title of a game, to be honest.
My chili dogs are not ready.
lets take bets on what one comes out first:
Metroid Prime 4 VS Sonic prime
@Verg They're not writing it, the other studio is.
@Silly_G
"Tubby custard! Tubby custard!"
?
Waiting for a trailer.
"Well isn't that just prime." Optimus Primal, Beast Wars.
@Mario500 : The article notes "Wild Brain", which I assume is some sort of production house, has "Teletubbies" listed along their notable works. I seem to recall the Teletubbies mindlessly chanting "Tubby custard" as being one of their catch phrases, which is what my comment was referencing.
I also think it's hilarious that they think that putting Teletubbies on their CV to promote their show will give it some prestige.
WOOOOOOO I can't wait for this. Ithe show must take place of the leaked sonic rift game just look at the name it has cracks in it almost like time rifts, and look at the rift part its purple almost like purple rifts. It even has a phasing effect on it.
Very nervous about the multiverse concept. It remains to be seen how it will work out, of course. I'd just rather have a single Sonic inhabiting a single reality for a show. If the cast is just different Sonics meeting each other, don't know if I'll be into it.
@Silly_G A Sonic/Teletubbies crossover may be just what Sega needs.
I hope there are bunch of those Pocky rabbits hopping around in Teletubbyland as Sonic reaches the Windmill checkpoint after fighting Badnik Noo-noo vacuum cleaners.
@Silly_G
"I also think it's hilarious that they think that putting Teletubbies on their CV to promote their show will give it some prestige."
"CV"?
@Mario500 : I meant that in the rhetorical sense. CV stands for Curriculum Vitae, which is very similar (but just a little different) to a résumé, in which a list of one's past works/jobs/projects are listed in order to attract new work.
