The emulation experts at M2 might not necessarily be releasing any more Sega Ages titles for the Nintendo Switch, but it's not entirely done with this collection just yet.
According to the Japanese company's official Twitter account, it's just released updates for six of its Sega Ages games. These updates cover Thunder Force IV, Phantasy Star, Out Run, Gain Ground, Puyo Puyo and Virtua Racing.
Here are some very rough translations, courtesy of Google translate:
Lightning Force - Fixed a bug that vertical scrolling was not reproduced at the opening
Phantasy Star - Fixed a bug that rarely makes noise when not using FM sound source-Fixed other minor bugs
OutRun - Fixed a bug that ranking data disappears when displaying an attract demo without playing after startup-Fixed other minor bugs
Gain Ground - Fixed a bug that the time advances faster-Fixed a bug that the character used changes when rewinding-Fixed so that BEEP who cooperated is displayed correctly in the staff credit
PuyoPuyo - Improvement of network play
Virtua Racing - Fixed a bug that the course record was not recorded when the game was over without opening a pause after starting the race in "Single Play" -Improved network play
Then, in response to some hot requests (including our representative), we have added a screen brightness (gamma) adjustment function! During the demonstration, you can adjust it up and down with ZL or ZR, so please give it a try!
So, what are you waiting for? Update your Sega Ages collection now and tell us what you think in the comments below.

Nice but I’m still pissed that Sega killed the Ages line!! Soooo many great Sega arcade games left in the vault!! Terrible decision IMO 😞
@joey302 You think Sega has the ability to understand how to make money from their back catalogue outside of Mega Drive/Genesis games? Such a weird company in decision making.
Their title selection was generally poor when choosing which oldies would get an AGES treatment. So many obvious choices lost to 30 puzzle games
Wish they added local wireless play to virtua racer.
I’m ready for Sega Saturn ports.
Give me my Comix Zone!
And Sub-Terrania!
Such quality releases. I am 10 hours into Phantasy Star and might go as far as calling it my favorite Switch release so far.
@FragRed absolutely makes no sense to me at all! What’s even more baffling is the games that did make it to switch didn’t even make it to PS4 another tremendous audience! Sega really must not like money! 🤷♂️
They could had continue the Ages line with 10 more titles. The pandemic is still in effect so not sure why they wouldn't take advantage of that and offer more digital goodness. Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder, Cotton, Zaxxon, Alien Storm, Thunder Blade, and Virtua Fighter 2 would had made a great addition to the Sega Ages lineup.
That's really great that M2 did all of this, especially since they have moved on from this series. Kudos to them. But I could never find a match of Puyo Puyo for the life of me so I wonder was it really all that worth it 🤣
No widescreen Sonic 1 and 2? wishful thinking I guess
@Yanina Phantasy Star 1 is a real gem.i played it on the Master System and Switch. So great!
@sleepinglion Don’t diss Ichidant R.
I really want more classic/legacy support on the Switch. If I were to say there is one area where the Switch has not met or exceeded my expectations, it's that. Don't get me wrong, there's a pretty decent range of arcade games, and even respectable selections of NES and SNES games.
But where are collections of Game Boy/Color, GBA and N64 games? Where are collections of Gamecube era titles? Forgive me but there's a huge range of games from those systems/years that have very very little support on the Switch.
I would say, bizarrely little support! I can't think of any logical reason why we've not had more from these categories. Nintendo and other publishers are sitting on a small gold mine of profits there that require very little work. We have proof of concept examples of games from all of those systems that run on Switch. Just very very few of them. Even compared to the Switch online's limited collection.
@WaveWitch Especially since Revenge of Death Adder is already on the Astro Mini. It seems like a no brainer to bring it over
@Noid There were heavier hitters to tackle first. They also neglected their Dreamcast and Saturn systems
M2 has been awfully silent as of late. It would be awesome if at some point this year they made a surprise announcement for some of the fan-requested titles people could nominate in the surveys included in each Ages game. Shining Force III, Skies of Arcadia, and Dragon Force would obviously be far bigger projects than any of the Ages releases, but I have every confidence that M2 could update them for current hardware. The same goes for Sega's later coin-ops like Daytona USA 2, SCUD Racer, and Super Star Wars Arcade, provided they could work through the licensing barriers.
At any rate, M2 had been my favorite Switch third-party developer and I hate that Sega basically shut them and the Ages line down. Hopefully we'll be hearing from them again soon.
It's a shame they won't release any more games in the Ages series. I got almost all of them, except for Gain Ground and Ichidant R...
Maybe it's my favorite series today
Look M2/Sega (as if you might be listening) - the only one you released that was remotely new or interesting was Virtua Racing, therefore I bought that - as well as Sonic AGAIN.
If you gave us NIGHTS, Daytona, Sega Rally, Sonic Adventure, the Panzer games, Vitua Cop, House of the Dead, Shenmue, Alien 3: The Gun... etc... we would have bought a ton of that stuff. Light gun games with a jon-con holder would be amazing on Switch).
Ya know, interesting titles... so any failing of profits is down to you pushing us to buy new versions of Genesis games AGAIN.
@Carck Thanks for the insight. I mean I'd buy them on Switch - and I'm not some sort of unusual Sega fanboy or something. Virtua Racing was a gem I'm sure many bought.
I'm wondering if they fixed the shadow glitch in Virtua Racing - for some reason the shadows under the cars went from dark to pale grey.
@WaveWitch don’t even get me started lol My Sega Ages wish list is longer then your leg 🤣
When I saw Virtua Racing hit I got high hopes for fresh Sega arcade oldies but nooooooo! If ONLY they would’ve done what Hamster is doing! Oh the possibilities! 🤨 😌
The gamma correction/adjustment on Virtua Racing made my day! Before, I did what I could to fix it in elgato Game Capture but it was still way off. Now, proper red car, black tires, dark gray asphalt, shadowy areas on the track return, it's gorgeous!
@WiltonRoots It's a dark, tiny checker pattern now, I believe it's correct as per the arcade. I kind of remember it being lighter at one point, but I didn't see it in my old recordings.
@joey302
Absolutely.
It doesn't help that SEGA raised expectations when the AGES line was announced by claiming that Saturn and Dreamcast games were possible. They did the same thing with the SEGA Forever mobile line and failed to deliver there too.
Add me to the ‘disappointed with Sega’ list.
I had such high hopes for the Ages line.
Edit. But congratulations to M2 for making these updates and good job on the games that were released
@RushDawg I just don’t get it at all! Who the hell is making the decisions there?? I remember SOJ was constantly breaking SOA’s shoes about many decisions but SOA is totally responsible for the success of the Genesis in the USA.
"Virtua Racing" is still better in its Deluxe form on the 32X.
@sixrings Split Screen?
@Yanina
Phanbtasy Star was a title I wanted to play but for various reasons could not. Now that I have a physical cart I am really enjoying it.
@masterLEON For me now the shadows are worse than ever. It's like a horrible moire pattern akin to big fat blurry flickering polka dots. I had to switch it off. I should email them to see what's going on.
Would love to see Fighters Megamix appear on Switch but looks unlikely!
Virtua Racing has (or at least had a major flaw): The 2-8 multiplayer mode doesn't work with a Pro Controller. You have to use a single joycon in this mode. I have 2 pairs of joy-cons and 2 pro controllers.
I can't play a 6-player race, as the Pro Controller is supported only in single player mode.
@WiltonRoots That's weird, what kind of TV are you using?
@masterLEON A Sony Bravia 42" and I have all the TV features switched off. I should see if it happens in handheld too, but it is odd that no other game has display issues at all.
@WiltonRoots It sounds like a mismatch in the resolution between the Switch and the TV, but the TV doesn't want to auto-switch to the correct resolution. If other games are fine then I'm stumped. Handheld should be fine, though. Have you tried changing the resolution on the output on the Switch to the other one (720 if you're on 1080, or vice versa)? Or if it's a 4K TV it might have something to do with the upscaling.
I was really hoping for an update that brought the extra cars and tracks from the 32x version of Virtua Racing. That version was so much fun.
The Out Run bug was game breaking really. Great they’ve fixed it! 🥳
