The last update we got about Bayonetta 3 was back in August, when series creator Hideki Kamiya said development was going fine. So what's the latest on this highly anticipated Switch exclusive?
Japanese video game outlet Famitsu recently spoke to Kamiya in an end-of-year interview looking ahead to 2021, and once again, he took the opportunity to address the concerns surrounding the third entry's development.
Here's exactly what he had to say, which also happens to be a "copy" of his comment from last year...
“First off, many people are worried about Bayonetta 3 considering there hasn’t been any new information since its announcement, but verifications of new systems have been going great and development is going very well, so please wait with peace of mind. (This is a copy of my 2020 comment.)"
At the very end of this response, he also mentioned how his other upcoming title Project G.G. was finally underway, and told fans to "please look forward to it".
Do you think we'll ever see Bayonetta 3 at this rate? Is 2021 the year it'll finally be released? Share your thoughts down below.

Of course that's what is said, they have nothing else to say. Now they are just copy pasting replies.
ah so glad to hear this! I just really want Bayonetta 3
It feels like this is a version of Steamed Hams with Platinum Games as Principal Skinner
Pikmin 4 has been ready to go FOR YEARS, too.
At this point Bayonetta 3 doesn't exist anymore. lol
.....sighs
Bayonetta 3, a 2022 or later release it seems.
Complaining about the wait
Vs.
Complaining about an unfinished game and day one patches

I actually appreciate the constant updates. Other games like WiLD and Deep Down were announced and then quietly died in the background.
3 years since it was announced and not a single screenshot or concept art has been shown, the developer keeps getting touchy when asked about how it's going to the point he bans people on social media. Something doesn't smell right with this game.
Can't wait for this game. Hope we get some pictures or videos soon.
Well at least hes keeping us updated somewhat
I put it squarely on Nintendo that this game was announced so early in its development. There wasn't a lot going on with Switch exclusives at the time so I think they dumped this and Metroid Prime 4 on us in the hope that we'd ignore the draught. I love the Bayonetta series so waiting isn't really that big of a deal for a specific game but the AAA releases for the Switch are noticeably thin if you don't count retreads like Mario 3D World (which I'm sure is great but I already played that game like 4 or 5 years ago).
@Robzilla Bayonetta 3? At this time of year? At this time of day? In this part of the country? Localized entirely within the Switch?!
Platinum Games must feel like Lois when Stewie kept calling for her.
@StinkyHat I have to agree. At this point it feels almost like they're trying to keep stuff under wraps and save face rather than give us anything of value...
Almost like the game is in development hell (Heehee hoho) and has been for a long time.
I feel like they announced this game way to early when they were still in like, pre-production, similar to Cyberpunk 2077's first trailer being shown before development fully started in 2016.
Just have patience people... there are many other things to play in the meantime. Get back to your backlogs!
@StinkyHat Kamiya blocks everyone on social media. So much so that it has become a meme now.
One of the stretchgoals for the Wonderful 101 remake was to get blocked by him.
Kamiya has always been like this. He simply doesn't like PR.
@Chowdaire @Robzilla Yes
This may go over many heads here but this also reminds me of the Tom Hank's movie "The Money Pit" when they ask when the construction will be completed.
As long as it's gonna be at least as good as the 2nd one, I really don't care if I have to wait 2-3 more years.
I really love the first 2 games so I have really high hopes for the 3rd entry.
@Yanina nobody is complaining about the wait.
People are complaining about the absolute lack of any tangible information other than repeated "ItS GoINg WeLl".
We'd know by now if it were going to come out in 2021.
I’m not one of the people bothering him about it, but I’m in pain inside 😢
@RustedHero May I see it?
I've said this before, personally i think Astral Chain was meant to be Bayonetta but they probably decided they wanted to take a different direction with Bayonetta, so instead of scraping what they had already made, they reskinned it and called it "Astral Chain".
This actually does happen a lot more than people think, developers start a project, ideas get added over the years and the product might end up entirely different from the original idea, sometimes the developers stick with that and sometimes they don't.
In this case, my theory is they decided to just restart development on Bayonetta and give us Astral Chain. Which did just come out of the blue to begin with. And is in the exact same genre of action hack and slash.
I've no actual proof to back up what i say but it would certainly explain why we haven't seen anything about the game since it was announced. But instead about 15 months after it was first announced we get a totally different game. That is also an action hack and slash...
The pieces fit. Admitting to that would also mean he could pipe down about the quarterly "ItS GoINg WeLl" posts.
Same response, but I ain’t complaining. It will come eventually.
Only a few more days until their secret Platinum 5, 2020 reveal time runs out.
Announced way too early tbh. Should’ve waited closer to launch.
Switch 2/Pro launch title? Ironic considering it was one of the very first Switch games announced.
@Darlinfan Yep it's like watching a progress bar when downloading or saving a huge file, a watched bar never moves. It'll come when it comes and they'll show bits when they're ready. Unfortunately this is Nintendolife, not everyone sees things like that in here.
@Joeynator3000 took them 3 years to make bayonetta 2. Not sure why this one should be any different
I'd settle for some basic information at this point like we're a third finished or we're a bit more than halfway.
@Razer I'm kind of torn on what type of development update I like better.
There's the Bayonetta 3 route and the Cyberpunk 2077 route.
In one you have little to no updates, making many people complain and wait for tangible information, but we know that it wasn't completely abandoned at the very least.
And in the other you have drips of info with advertising and such and such, most of the time not honestly(as people are idiots and complain about transparency with game development and then go on and **** on the trailers when it shows the game in its current state as a work in progress, which is exactly what they wanted) so it would sell. This hypes people up, sometimes to astronomical proportions, obviously disappointing many in the process.
I honestly don't know which one I like better; the Bayonetta 3 route is little information in exchange for an honest answer, but the Cyberpunk 2077 route is lots of info but you need a shaker of salt at all times when digesting the news. There are of course numerous exceptions to both of these routes. For instance BOTW 2 was doomed for both of these routes just cause it has the Zelda logo behind it.
Edit: You have a very interesting theory as well. In an interview in 2016 I think, Kamiya stated he had multiple ideas for a theoretical sequel to Bayonetta 2 and interestingly enough a spin-off title. It could be that Astral Chain might have been what became of that supposed spin-off. And also Kamiya was giving these blank updates during the lead-up to release of Astral Chain, so even if it was Bayonetta 3 at some point, it must have diverged only a little bit after the announcement, so it would still be pretty far in I would think anyways.
Announced too prematurely, just like Prime 4 which barely started development.
I could see BOTW2 being the only real big title of 2021, but thats only because the devs themselves said it started as a DLC.
@Yanina : I'll take the wait every time. I'm glad that my Bayonetta 1 and 2 carts are both Version 1.0, which is a rarity nowadays.
In any case, I fully expect that Bayonetta 3 will have patches, though perhaps less egregious than the competition. It's unfortunate that publishers are so impatient (and that includes Nintendo), and while Nintendo updates their cartridges in reprints, I am not inclined to double dip on a good chunk of my library (and there's no certainty as to when a game is complete, as games as old as Splatoon 2 continue to receive updates).
One of the worst examples of an unfinished game that I've experienced lately was with the retail edition of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, which didn't even have voices or question packs on the cartridge. The day one update was over 2GB, and the silent, unfinished build on the cartridge was frankly embarrassing. I won't be in any hurry to give Microids my money again any time soon.
The more they say "development is going well" the more it is clear that it is NOT going well.
Well it could be worse....could be Babylons Fall.
The last two times I recall a developer saying development is going very well we're:
1) Cyberpunk 2077.
2) Project Cars development going very well on Wii U.
So either the game is a garbage fire or it was never in development to begin with.
I've had me pre-order in with Amazon for what feels like 3 years
@XenoShaun they also said development was going well for bayonetta two. The o e that took 3 years to make.
@Robzilla ...No.
I wonder what verification of new systems mean, I'm not a tech guy.
Anyways, I was expecting to see something at the VGAs. I am not gonna panic just yet though. I'm thinking this game will hit October 2021 (around Halloween).
I'm hoping that they're playing it very strategic with all of the info. Perhaps there's something to show, but Platinum didn't want to be overshadowed by the next gen consoles launching.
@Robzilla Can I see it? “No”
Oh god we're never getting this game.
I prefer to wait the game turns good than another overhyped game with problems like Cyberpunk 2077. Don't forget the Miyamoto quote
The developer, Kamiya, is the ultimate troll in a way and his egotistical behaviour is tiresome. Almost 4 years since the games announcement and not so much as a screenshot?........I’m guessing it’s been canned and like others on here seem to think, it ultimately became Astral Chain.
Honestly I don't care how long the game takes I want it to be as polished as it can be at launch. My issue is we have had no more trailers or screenshots since the teaser.
Instead of saying it is going fine etc etc. How about show us something. "Show don't tell" will put alot of players at ease if you just show something. If players are getting annoyed that is on you Platinum and not the players.
Also people have forgotten that Cyberpunk started of the same way as bayonetta. Showed off a teaser of the game and then nothing for years. Both games showed off their games way too early and because of that the hype for people only builds.
Wait until you can show off late alpha gameplay if you want to show off your game or at least release a teaser but know you can release a real trailer a few months down the line. Also none of that fake trailers that EA (anthem) and Ubisoft (division 2) show off.
I rather wait for a good game than for a bad game to come out bearing the name of Bayonetta. Astral Chain was good but it was a disappointment for me.
@Muddy_4_Ever please stop about pikmin 4. Pretty sure it was about the hey pikmin project for the 3ds. But i think there will be a pikmin 4 game in the future
Does it run "surprisingly well"?
Just let devs work. Rushing games is never good. It will be ready when it’s done. Game development takes years.
In fact, go play astral chain while you wait.
'at this rate' is not waiting with 'peace of mind' lol. I would rather play it when it's ready than have it released in a sloppy state (not to mention any CDP-er names, I mean names.)
@faint Well Bayonetta 3 was announced on 21 december 2017, so the 3 years have already run out and there hasn't been any screenshot or trailer yet after the first teaser.
Imagine the response if Kamiya revealed in a couple months that this was another April Fools joke like that shmup they plausibly 'announced' last year.
Developers shouldn't announce games when they're so early in development. People get too impatient. I would have been happy to hear about Bayonetta 3 for the first time a few months before it releases.
Pretty sure they are waiting to release on nintendo next console, switch are too weak to run Bayonetta 3.
@Yanina I'm sure some people sign all the petitions against crunch, then complain openly about delays, day one patches and unfinished products. The human mind will forever remain a mystery.
I'm part of team finished product. Even if it takes a few delays and patches, as long as communication from the developer is crystal clear (AKA never)
RIP bayonetta 3
@jtmnm @tka060681
Don't you two think it's a little too early to talk about the next console? As far as a console revision goes, I'm doubtful Nintendo would make that big of a jump now; it's almost 2021 and they haven't announced an improved version of the Switch yet.
With the long wait between the announcement and new info, I am concerned that it could be going through development hell. Hopefully it'll be as great as the first two games when it releases, but I am worried about it.
3 years after it anouncement at TGA 2017 and still Platinum Games/Kideki Kamiya is giving us the same excuses the devopment of Bayonetta 3 is progressing well, not a single screenshot/gameplay trailer of the game since it anouncement, if we don't have a single screenshot/gameplay trailer of Bayonetta 3 at the end of 2021, it means that sadly Bayonetta 3 is cancelled.
could the reason Bayonetta 3 is taking so long to release on Switch,is because Kideki Kamiya want to make to top Devil May Cry 5?make the best game of the franchise and best hack and slash?
Wasn't it the same with Bayonetta 2? Don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to new information as much as the next one, but I think it's a good idea to not share too much before they're finishing it up. If they share images of an unfinished product, there's always people going to complain and spread misinformation. As for mechanics and such, I want to see it when it all comes together, not some vague promises they may not keep for whatever reason. Until then, it's not like there isn't enough to be played already. It's either an entirely public vlogging process or whatever, or just make sure you're happy with your work before showing it off. I may be working in an entirely different branch of art, with entirely different media to create, but I respect that he doesn't share what isn't finished. Still, I'm looking forward to it as well, and given what others have shamelessly published after years of waiting, I also understand the concern. But this is Platinum and Nintendo, they shamelessly -and rightfully so- thank us for our patience when announcing they're completely restarting one of the most awaited games ever when they're not happy about it.
@Silly_G Never played "who wants to be a millionaire", and never will, but Microids, if I'm not mistaken, is the same publisher (?) that did the XIII remake that could have been as easy as a few simple updates and "BAM" a great fps made better, and the Blacksad game that still is technically literally unplayable after several huge patches, yet could have been beautiful when handled right. And it's sad really, they have some very good IP's as source material in a wide range of genres (some of which I really don't care for but that's personal preference), and sometimes some passion for them shines through despite the issues, but it's all for nothing due to some terrible technical execution, and probably lack of budget / development time / ...
who cares it will be there when it gets here.
I want to know the platinum 5 announcement!
With both Babylon's Fall and Bayonetta 3 in known development I'm sure Platinum have bitten off more than they can chew.
If they don't hurry up and release, they will end up having to redevelop them for the new gen hardware (if they aren't already doing so).
Played over 100 hours of bayonetta 2 fantastic game for all levels of ability. Haven’t been able to go back to it since or the first one. Not really too bothered about this but I agree with most people here , jus give us a screenshot or something ha ha. Xxx anyone seen a Metroid prime 4? Xxx
@GilbertXI personally i don't care about getting a release date or having a rushed game.
I just want to see some progress. If they want to maintain interest in the franchise then we need to see some tangible progress.
The game was announced in December 2017, but one would think that it had probably been in development before it was announced (one would think, but developers these days are ass backwards in everything they do).
So if that is indeed the case, then the game has been cooking for nearly 4 years, now lets say they didn't put their big teams on the project until they were done with everything else.
That still means we should see the game at least in 2021, but they've generated no hype for the series at all. Which is a big wasted opportunity, you don't want Cyberpunk levels of hype but you want more hype than what we got for Astral Chain.
I mean that situation is terrible, Astral Chain is probably one of the best exclusive games on the system and it has less sales than old Wii U ports. That happened because no hype at all.
You don't want to create a Cyberpunk situation but at the same time, you don't want to create an Astral Chains situation, where NOBODY really knows about the game and it barely scrapes past 1 million sales on an install base of 70+ million.
@MajorTom I’m sure there is nothing about 2020 that’s been different than any other year on a global level. Nothing at all.
@faint What has a game that has been in development for 3 years without any news to do with 2020? Yes 2020 is obviously part of those 3 years, but blaming it on covid is the easy way out.... It makes sense that people are getting skeptical after 3 years of silence except for their yearly tweet of "develoment is going fine". Not even 1 screenshot has been shown within those years.
Edit: Also it is likely already more than 3 years in development since the teaser trailer was released 3 years ago. I doubt they would release a teaser without them even starting on the project.
Hopefully it will be a game that even old and new fans can appreciate.
Hopefully it will not be pushed back to serve as a launch title for Nintendo's next system. ^^
@MajorTom didn’t we just go over how the last one took 3 years and you replied with “it’s already been 3”? Pretty sure COVID had an effect on that 3. Anyway, Platinum has a great track record and has released 4 games (3 being ports) on the system in the last 3 years. I highly doubt they are going to stop the 1 release minimum per year streak. Especially when bayonetta 3 has been bankrolled by Nintendo. We haven’t seen anything from final fantasy 16 or the next elder scrolls and I seriously doubt they’re canceled.
Looking fwd to it
@faint I would imagine as Nintendo's funding it that Platinum are under orders not to show anything until Nintendo tell them to - they never like showing anything off until they're nearly ready, especially knowing how kneejerk people can be over first impressions of an unfinished game.
@faint I get your point, I also don't expect it will be cancelled. Btw the last FF 16 trailer was just 3 months ago so not the best example to give XD, but yah the elder scrolls is 2 years ago now. Bayonetta 3 is likely pretty far in development and hopefully not that far away. It mostly is the mediasilence for 3 years that make the fans worry. I would have at least expected to see something visual of the game within that timeframe if you consider that the developmentcycle of the games from Platinum aren't that long. You got a good point with the amount of games that Platinum released and is working on right now. They also are working on babylon's fall and I think they also play a part in the remake of Nier (not 100% certain) right now.
Nintendo probably were to eager too announced Bayonetta 3 and Metroid Prime 4. But I get why they did when they did all the same. I'm sure we don't have a Cyberpunk situation here though, it's not gonna be 8 years from first reveal that these games will come out. I imagine if not next year, then by the end of 2022, they'll both be out.
@HamatoYoshi LMAO if you think the most important franchise of Platinum is getting cancelled, makes no economic sense whatsoever. Do you want them to demolish their building in the process too?
And there's nothing remotely similar about Astral Chain with the Bayonetta series.... not the combat system, not the setting, not the art-style, not the enemies. NOTHING could have been transitioned during development from Bayonetta to ultimately become Astral Chain.
Even if it was, it would have needed to be made from scratch ..... and by that logic then, why not make an all-together new game instead of "turning Bayonetta into Astral chain" .......
@WiltonRoots agreed
@Razer that's completely fair, an issue I see is the fact that the development updates are coming from Kamiya's Twitter. That is a problem of itself.
Considering P* is also developing Babylon's Fall with Square Enix, self publishing Project G.G., and remastered and released Wonderful 101 and just released Astral Chains last year this doesn't surprise me. Bayonetta 3 is probably just in the oven and was probably not even in full development when the trailer was shown off in 2017. I still standby that I think this will be released in 2021 as one of Nintendo's big holiday titles and a trailer was probably planned for E3 before that got scrapped due to COVID. No reason to really be worried as P* rarely drops the ball and is the studio that releases games when they are ready. Remember NieR Automata? That went into radio silence for a couple years too after it was announced in 2015 till it just got crazy promotions and a release within a year. This is kind of P*'s MO
I actually just realised something.
The situation from Kamiya's perspective is kinda like this. "I've put Bayonetta 2 on two systems with a combined install base of 80+ million and it hasn't even sold 1m units... on BOTH consoles"
"And i constantly have people asking me where the 3rd game is..."
You know deep down the man must be kinda pissed.
I mean if it got cancelled, i wouldn't even blame him, I'd be interested to know how many people are sitting there without a copy of the second game on either a Switch or Wii U, wondering why we haven't had the 3rd game yet.
That would take some audacity, just to know, you don't own the second game and you'd complain about not getting the 3rd game.
To put this into perspective, Astral Chain has sold more than Bayonetta 2, so from a purely financial point of view, there is much more incentive to make a sequel to Astral Chain over Bayonetta.
@Razer That is rather funny to think about. But a million sales is still nothin to sneeze at and even on the Wii U it made back it's money and turned a profit. So odds are the game will come out just fine... though Kamiya I'm sure is not enjoying the pestering.
@Wexter yeah i think it's actually just shy of a million, the last count was 700k but that was a few months after the 2nd game released on the Switch, it's probably a million now or close too, which yeah it's still a fair number.
But when you consider that an old Wii U port that is quite possibly the worst Mario Platforming game ever made has sold more than 8x as many just on the Switch alone.
"That hurts", would be an understatement.
I'm just hoping the 3rd game lives up to all the demand. 5m+.
@fafonio wow! Calm yourself down ‘Mr I know everything about game development’
What an angry little man you are!
@HamatoYoshi what was angry about my reply? Sarcastic is another thing. I didn’t insult you or anything.
@fafonio maybe just chill out a bit, less of the capital letters!
Classic Kamiya. You keep being you my friend.
I have a feeling that Nintendo and platinum games are holding it back to launch in the switch "pro". So of course he can't say anything about it because Nintendo hasn't revealed switch pro yet.
@Zadaris classic arse kissing!
