Update: We now have confirmation that Digimon Survive has indeed been delayed to 2021. The game's producer, Kazumasa Habu, has shared the following (thanks, Gematsu):
The Digimon Survive team would like to extend our thanks to fans from around the world for their support during development, especially in these difficult times. We had originally planned to launch Digimon Survive in 2020, but current world events have shifted our development timing and we have made the difficult decision to push Digimon Survive‘s launch to 2021.
We thank you all for your continued patience as we work to create a fun and engaging tactical RPG game along with a memorable story for Digimon fans! We will share some exciting updates for Digimon Survive in spring 2021, so please stay tuned for more information.
Original Article (Sat 10th Oct, 2020 11:45 BST): There have been countless video game delays this year, and another one that looks like it may suffer the same fate is the upcoming survival strategy RPG, Digimon Survive. Although, it wouldn't be the first time for this particular title.
Following on from the Toei Animation Europe webpage temporarily listing a "January 2021" release window for this title back in August, a recent tweet from the game's producer Kazumasa Habu (in response to a concerned fan over on Twitter) seems to suggest Bandai Namco will delay the game (again) and promises to share an update on the "situation" soon.
Here is Habu's full response, courtesy of Gematsu:
“I apologize for worrying you. We’re currently reviewing the development team structure and refocusing the schedule for Digimon Survive. We’re coordinating with all parties concerned and plan to make an announcement on the situation in the near future. I apologize to everyone who has been looking forward to the game, but I ask that you please wait a while longer.”
Digimon Survive was officially confirmed for the Nintendo Switch in July 2018 and was meant to launch on the system in 2019. A year after the original announcement, it was then delayed until 2020 and at this rate, it might not even arrive this year.
Do you think we'll actually see Digimon Survive before the end of 2020? Share your thoughts below.

The concept of a dark and edgy Digimon game is still rip roaringly funny to me.
The concept to me is exciting and I do love my turn-based SRPGs, but it's hard to get too excited before they can actually start showing some proper progress and footage.
I do hope that something will come out of this eventually.
I was a dubious of this game from the outset. They had really big detailed sprites which look nice but for a SRPG it isn't practical since you can hardly see the battlefield.
It's like the polar opposite of Fire Emblem where characters are small and you can see a lot of the map at once.
It just gives me vibes of Digimon World 1-4 where they kept switching genres but resulted on a load of half-baked ideas.
I've barely made a dent in Cyber Sleuth, so they're more than welcome to take all of the time they need.
at least we have Cyber Sleuth complete edition in the meantime
I recently backlogged Cyber Sleuth, so this gives me more time to play both games in it (and everything else) by the time Survive rolls around.
I'm fine with waiting as long as the final product is up to snuff.
@Silly_G How is it? I've heard it can be a long haul.
I am still fairly certain most companies are using the lockdown to justify delays and have more time to finish their products.
As much as I understand people being impatient, I wish this delay trend continues after Covid19 to allow developers to avoid crunch period and deliver better products.
@Tyranexx : I've played it a bit, but I've barely made a dent in it, and probably haven't touched it in about a year now. Other games have come along and taken my attention away from it, including Pokémon Sword/Shield, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Two Point Hospital etc.
I ought to get back to it sometime.
It's been great so far, but like many RPGs, it can be a little grindy, and objectives aren't always clear. I would highly recommend it though.
@Tyranexx I am in chapter 5 and I the ending is nowhere near in sight.
Still on the fence on this on one hand it looks interesting a Lord of the Flies set in Digimon on the other I am not fond of being forced into another generic seinen boy role.
@Noid why? digimons always had a darker side to it.
@Noid I mean... if they do it right it can work.
The problem with "edgy reboots" (like Bomberman Act Zero) is that they were mainly cashgrabs. With japaniese games was usually because of the mentality "that's just what the west likes!".
Who knows how Digimon Survive would be. I enjoyed Cyber Sleuth and that game tried to appeal to an older audience too.
@jowe_gw and you didn't think remastered of any console isn't a cash grab? Let's stop with the bucket scrapping and concentrate on gaming fun instead shall we.
I'm getting kingdom hearts 3 vibes from this
@Tyranexx I recently finished both. They're a lot of fun and well worth sticking it out to the end but yup, they can definitely start to feel like a bit of a repetitive slog, especially if you play them back to back like I did...
@Shadowmoon522 This. The uninitiated still think Digimon's a Pokemon knock-off. But Digimon has a TOOOOON of death and dark scenes. One lion-based digimon comes to mind.
I'm usually all about delays, because when they happen sans reports of behind-the-scenes drama, it usually turns out a high-quality game. But it's getting to a point where I'm starting to get worried =/
First of all, thanks for the feedback everyone!
@Silly_G Sounds like I'll have fun with it in that case! I'm a bit of a lapsed fan; I loved the anime back in the day but fell out of watching it after not caring for Fusion/Xros Wars. I think the last related game I played was Digimon World: Dusk, another monster raising RPG. I loved that one, it was a neat alternate take on Pokemon.
@Coffee_Drinker Interesting. I wonder how many chapters it has? Looks like the plot will be interesting, anyway (I like Lord of the Flies), though nothing too out of the RPG norm either.
@Otherboard Gotcha. Sounds like a break between the two games will be in order when I do get around to them. I'm sure I'll have fun, but it'll definitely be a time investment lol. I just checked HowLongToBeat and have at least 100 hours ahead of me. XD
@Noid Digimon always had dark themes, and from the seasons I saw (1-3) they managed them quite well. Same with the Cyber Sleuth games. Digimon as a whole is that way in general, but it isn't dark for the sake of it which is when something becomes edgy.
I don't think the Digimon are surviving too well, eh?
I am starting to worry considering it has been a couple years and we still have no concrete gameplay footage. I really hope this one is worth the wait for the people looking forward to it.
@Tyranexx I platinumed the Vita version. The pacing was kind of weird. It was really slow the first 10 and things really picked up speed after that. It took me... 30 or 40 to beat the main plot I think, and then 70 or 80 to complete everything else. I think some of the stats and stuff got rebalanced on the switch so it might not take as long to complete everything now. I kind of preferred the second one, from what I played of it. I thought the pacing was better and I liked the new stuff it added. I didn’t finish that one, though. Next time it goes on sale, I might double (quadruple?)-dip and finally get around to doing that.
@SwitchForce What are you talking about?
What I meant is that the reasons why games like Bomber Act Zero (the extreme example I used) were made to be more "edgy" were purely money related. It was done because they thought that merely making their game more "dark" they would appeal more to the west and sell more.
Why they thought that? Probably because they looked at the yearly best selling games list of the time in the US.
My point was that, if a game from a franchise decides to be more dark than usual, it doesn't have to be a bad game by default. Spacially if there is some creative push aside from "it's popular".
@StardusterEX Sounds like I'll need to stick with things a bit before they really open up. Which is fine; unless I really dislike what I'm playing, I'll usually play it for a few hours. I've heard that Hacker's Memory is the shorter of the two, so that might explain the better pacing. Seems like it's worth my time so far!
Gotta love War Graymon's tata bazooka.
I excpected it, but it still doesn't make me any less upset
I didn't know about this game coming on switch
@Silly_G literally same, only bought it because it was on sale and it turns out its pretty magnificent
@Noid You must not have see much Digimon then. That was the main reason I liked the anime more than Pokémon growing up, it had a darker edge to it.
