What originally looked like a pretty quiet end to the year for Nintendo has suddenly erupted into a busy holiday season full of exciting Mario and Zelda releases. If you missed the news earlier today, Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Calamity, a game set 100 years before the events of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, is launching exclusively on Switch this November.
The announcement may well have arrived completely out of the blue, but that doesn't mean we haven't already got our hands on lots of lovely screenshots to share with you. On this page you'll find 25 new screens from the game, full of character close-ups, scenery, and intense battles.
Check them out:
It's looking pretty good, huh?
Are you liking the look of this? Remember, more news on the game will drop later this month.

Oh yeah, it's all coming together
Not disappointed by this year's big holiday title. Mashup of my two favorite series.
I'm 100% gonna day 1 this. No doubt in my mind!
Not an expression I would normally use, but as a nod to my friends across the pond, that looks dope.
It does look pretty sweet.
I liked the original because it featured so many characters, not sure if they can repeat that.
Hopefully the story is good, or at least better than "we fought, then we died, then BotW happens".
Cool, but honestly I'm very much worn out on the Warriors games after playing so many of them in the last gen. I'm not gonna get this.
I expected this to all be sexy pictures of Zelda.
"My disappointment is immeasurable, and my day is ruined"
Here’s hoping they did something (better/else) with that rockin’ soundtrack. The music pulled me right out of the other one. Made me nuts.
So glad this game is using the BOTW art style. This game cements to me that Nintendo views BOTW as the new direction for Zelda's future rather than a one-off like Skyward Sword or Twilight Princess.
If I recall correctly, no other Zelda game has recieved a direct sequel and a spin-off tied so closely to the main game.
I'm glad Nintendo went more hands-on on the Hyrule Warriors formula. This looks like a true collaboration instead of just a commissioned game with Nintendo assets in it. Love it!
@ianl579 That depends. Wind Waker got two direct sequels.
TP had Links crossbow training. And the Picross game on 3DS.
Looks beautiful, but I never was a fan of hack ans slash games. They get boring really fast for me
So excited for this! Sign me up!
@ianl579 This isn’t the first time they’ve stuck to an art style when they’ve portrayed the same Link again canonically. Ocarina and Mask used the same engine and art style, and the same can be said for the art styles of Wind Walker and Phantom Hourglass. When the same Link appears more than once, Nintendo has historically stuck to the same art style.
The only thing that worries me a bit is that this could be an ideal opportunity to make another Warriors game with an open world like they recently tried with Dynasty Warriors 9.
The problem: DW9 turned out to be absolute garbage.
But my hype is definitly stronger for now. Day one regardless!
@ianl579 Wind Waker -> Phantom Hourglass -> Spirit Tracks with the spin-off Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland all shared the same art style.
@ianl579 "This game cements to me that Nintendo views BOTW as the new direction for Zelda's future rather than a one-off like Skyward Sword or Twilight Princess."
I might change my tone based on BOTW2, but if BOTW is any indication, I really hope not. I felt like they changed too much when they made BOTW.
@StuTwo Valid points. To me they aren't on the same level since the TP spinoffs (while fun) didn't add anything to the Zelda canon (whereas this game is directly tied to BOTW) and the WW sequels (again, great games!) were handheld instead of a premier console title like BOTW2 will be.
@thesilverbrick You're right! Though Majora's Mask was more of a standalone story featuring OOT Link while BOTW seems like a direct sequel to the first game (based off the teaser).
@link3710 I hope that explains where I'm coming from.
@ianl579 I get you (and agree!). I just thought to note them.
@MS7000 I understand. Personally, the open-world of BOTW was a little overwhelming for me, and while I consider it a great game, it's far from my favorite in the series. I hope BOTW2 is able to provide a more focused, story-driven experience while retaining the adventurous spirit of the original.
Nice. Never played any warrior-like games so I am looking forward for this one
Wasnt it shown zelda could NOT USE the sheikah slate because it wasnt meant for her to use
this one has much a more stronger Zelda feeling than Hyrule Warriors and that is why I love it!
@Lady_rosalina
She couldn’t open the sanctuaries because the challenges were meant for Link, but she could use the map take pictures (And refferred to that as a “newly discovered functionality”).
I am not saying that she COULD use bombs etc, but at least they aren’t exactly contradicting the original game.
That said I am not 100% in yet, I quickly grew bored of HW, although I love BOTW.
Maybe I will get this if the battle system gets refreshed, I can’t wait for BOTW 2, Astral chain 2 and No more heroes 3 forever
Looks like the perfect game to play for an hour or two after work.
May end up skipping this...seems like they're completely focused on BotW and not a expanded sequel thing. Ugh...
Looks great - Hyrule Castle looks magnificent!
It's also pretty cool that this is set before BotW, as it seems like BotW 2 is set afterwards.
I wonder if the lack of enemy variety in BotW might be more of an issue with this game.
Now we also know why the actor of Revali was reprising his role. Not for botw2, but for this game. That also explains why the champion amiibo are back in stock.
"Sounds great - although the lack of enemy variety in BotW might be more of an issue here"
Or not. You are mostly fighting big mops. And they could give them armor and other things to make them different. And who knows, maybe they ad a few new enemies.
Brings into mine Switch Pro is coming out in March 2021 ring a bell anyone???? Along with BOTW2...
@KishinLink @Lady_rosalina it’s better for them to make a moveset for her based on the Sheikah Slate, since BotW specifically says she could not use her goddess magic until the event that (nearly) killed Link.
So in order to give her an interesting moveset, the Sheikah Slate is the perfect compromise. As yes, although we never saw her use it that way, the game only really confirms she can’t enter the Shrines.
This looks amazing. Can’t wait! I love that they kept the art style of BotW but also incorporated gameplay elements too. I’m guessing there will be multiplayer (based on past games) but I hope online or wireless co-op is an option & not just split screen. Better yet, maybe 4-player co-op?! Guess I’ll have to wait to the end of the month to find out.
Cyberpunk and hyrule warrior, I’m liking november a lot hehe
@Joeynator3000 although it’s meant to be a prequel to BotW, that’s just the main story mode isn’t it?
They’re completely free to have fantasy chapters and adventure maps for all the wacky legacy characters.
Hope it is locked at 30fps or 60fps. Hopefully with a choice like Fire Emblem Warriors had! The no man's land of 35-55fps that characterizes Hyrule Warriors 1 is just too unpleasant.
@Eel Based on that 6 minute video, it seems like they're not going that route. :c
So will it be canon in the timeline or...
@Joeynator3000 a 6 minute video that focuses on the story mode, lets wait until more information is revealed before we get depressed.
Wow, that pre-calamity Hyrule castle looks amazing!
@Eel ...Did you even watch it? lol
Hyped to the tenth power. Is this the first Legend of Zelda game that was made only for the Switch? Breath of the Wild came to WiiU, Links Awaking was a remake of a Gameboy Color game, and Hyrule Warriors originally came to the 3DS and WiiU.
@Joeynator3000 yes...? We didn't get to see anything besides story sequences and random gameplay. Nothing was said about menus, modes or interface.
That's one way to get me excited for a musou game
Yay yay yay yay
@ianl579 Majora's Mask was a direct sequel.
Yes please thank you yes
This game looks great, definitely a preorder for me. Now I just need to actually play my copy of Hyrule Warriors which I bought at launch but haven't even booted once yet...
I haven’t played any of the warrior games yet, nearly bought the last one several times but always backed out. Kind of glad now because this looks like an epic intro to the games for me!
Also. Anyone feel like this should have been what the BotW DLC was about???
Hang on... How can Zelda use Magnesis and Stasis if the Sheikah Slate didn't have those features until Link unlocked them in BotW? Lol, well, if it makes her an interesting character to play as, I'm willing to overlook the continuity errors.
@LUIGITORNADO yeah. But how would that work? Like some vr stuff for link?
Revali be like, 'hello there'
@KayFiOS sheikah magic
Link in real armour is nice, hope it'll be released as addon for botw as well. And the botw2.
@ianl579 That's jsut because it's a prequel to BOTW dude, nothing more.
Overall, it looks great but.. I have no interest. I'd rather pick up something else. So much to choose from.
This was what I thought the DLC was going to be. Reuse the map, but show it in the past. Biggest hope for that was seeing a thriving Hyrule city to explore. But this is still an amazing surprise.
Dude playing as Sheik again would rule
Cant wait for this.
Seriously, these graphics look really impressive, and even better than any other warriors game (maybe except for DW9 and Spirit of Sanada).
That said, I hope they're the real deal when they show more gameplay later this month...
To give you an understanding of what I'm saying, this is how Fire Emblem: Three Houses looked like at E3 2018:

@KayFiOS Good point. BoTW made clear that Zelda was not being able to open the shrines and thus downloading those rune "apps" was not possible, unless Impa/Purah helped them somehow with Sheikah technology. Hopefully they will explain this. Personally I'm really happy seeing that those runes are back.
The artwork looks great but not sure I am into this manga trend (I know this is barely manga) anymore. I think I am burnt out on it.
