No first-party release gets left behind. That seems to be the motto for Nintendo this generation, as it ports just about every Wii U title it can across to the Switch. So far, we've seen games like New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, Pokkén Tournament DX, and of course, the best-selling game on the system to date is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - another former Wii U release.
So how many titles from this previous generation are expected to be revived? Well, apart from the rumour about Super Mario 3D World making a comeback, one other Wii U exclusive allegedly on the way is Pikmin 3.
A rumour about the third entry making a return in 'Deluxe' form surfaced not long after the Paper Mario reveal earlier this week, and now video game historian and Nintendo Life contributor Liam Robertson has backed up the original story by GamesBeat (via VGC) - adding how he gets "the impression it’s been ready to go" for a while:
In a follow-up tweet, Robertson noted how he had been talking about Pikmin 3 on Switch "for about a year now" and reminded a Twitter user how he was "the first to discuss" New Super Mario Bros. U on the Switch. He was also asked about the rumoured Metroid Prime "collection" for Nintendo's hybrid system and said it was the real deal:
Pikmin 3 on Switch and Metroid Prime are both real.
According to the original GamesBeat story by Jeff Grubb, Nintendo's studios will have Pikmin 3 and the rumoured 3D Mario remasters ready for release soon.
What do you think? Can you see Pikmin 3 making the Switch? How about the rumoured Super Mario remasters and Metroid Prime collection? Share your thoughts below.

Metroid prime trilogy HD, pikmin 3, and the Mario collection (supposing it has BOTH Galaxy games) will hold me over for quite some time while waiting for a new release. I just hope they are cleaned up nicely for re release and giving some QOL improvements too
Let's a go!
(Remove the character limit, NL.)
I want it. Ahhh
This, Paper Mario, Spongebob and Darksiders: Genesis would honestly make this year one of my favorites
I kinda wish I could have Pikmin 2 instead, but oki.
I’d prefer a Pikmin 4 but Nintendo seemingly haven’t finished picking the bones of the Wii U yet.
Also intensifying: my apathy when presented with rumors. Not to be confused with Rumours.
Interesting... I thought Pikmin 4 was a real project. So real that I thought if Pikmin 4 were a bun in the oven, it would be a black piece of hardened coal by now. That’s how done I thought it was.
They definitely aren’t going to release 3 and 4 the same year so this will dash people’s hopes if true.
Metroid Prime... ehh. I’ll believe it when I see it. It seems like the Prime rumors have been circling for 2 years, and nothing of substance came from them.
Also Nintendo aren’t going to throw a bunch of remasters in Q4.
Metroid Prime Trilogy, Mass Effect Trilogy, Borderlands Trilogy, BioShock Trilogy. Man that's a lot of trilogies my dollars wouldn't be able to keep up.
If Pikmin 1-3 don't give to the Switch soon I may lose my mind and I just want 4 announced and a trailer and it would ease my anxiety
@Grot Or, the complete lack of BC or a Virtual Console allows Nintendo to charge more for last-gen ports than half the AAA games coming out on PS4. Nobody cared about last-gen games when the Wii or Wii U were 3 years in, they were focused on upcoming games because BC made them cheap and easily available. This is just a way for Nintendo to make as little original games as possible and it’ll hurt them when the PS5/XSeX properly show off their slate of games.
Please let these both happen. I’m not into Xenoblade, and this Mario Party game doesn’t look like much, the battle system (while we don’t have enough to definitively make a decision) looks un-fun and boring after a while.
Im super curious how they’ll handle Prime 3, since it was so incredibly heavy on motion controls.
Nintendo could kill it this year with no new games if they released Metroid Prime Trilogy, Mario HD remakes, sneak out Zelda BotW 2 and Zelda OoT HD before the end of the year and then land some heavy hitting games spring 2021 like Metroid Prime 4 etc.
So what happened to Pikmin 4?
Schrodinger's Metroid Prime Trilogy.
@Joeynator3000 why not all three in HD?
@nessisonett it's only hurt them among hardcore fanboys. Most people don't care and will buy up the Wii U ports. Look at the best selling game for the Switch.
#Whereispikmin4
I hope the Prime "collection" is more than the steel book Wii version, running at higher settings. I hope they pack in pinball, and federation force. I also hope for a 2-2.5D collection, including Snes, GBA, Other M and Samus Returns. I think we would be lucky to get Samus Returns on it's own with higher resolution so maybe the second collection is pie in the sky.
I never played Pikmin 3 on Wii U. In fact, very few people did. The game did less than a million units. Marvel Alliance 3 did more than that.
I wouldn't be surprised if Pikmin 3's failure would have killed the series.
Now it gets another shot
This is great. For some reason the Wii U is the only console that simply doesn't appeal to me. Perhaps due to the gimmick of the controller. And it's not because a handful or so of its exclusive games wouldn't justify having one on the shelf. Titles like Pikmin 3 and Super Mario 3D World have often tempted me to go down the PC-emu-and-neckbeard route. These news goes to show that patience pays off
@nessisonett I honestly doubt you know how Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft work. Talking out of the rear and 'assuming' that the other two companies are hard at work with brand new titles while Nintendo is scratching their ass releasing old games is a bit ridiculous and stupid of you.
Do you not recall the launch of the PS4? LOL. Console was a joke with nothing to play from Sony for nearly 2 years. So much for them releasing AAA release on release. The Xbox One's launch isn't even worth mentioning.
Ports from Nintendo are welcome because the Switch will introduce these classics to a new audience. The amount of people who own a Switch who haven't played a single Metroid or Pikmin is very large. More of these ports and remasters = more original content in the future.
It's also funny you decide to mention this one day after the reveal of a brand new Nintendo Game. I guess the announcement of Paper Mario has gone way over your head already.
Please, I beg you, stop pretending you know how these businesses operate.
@HammerKirby
With how constantly Metroid Prime Trilogy is mentioned by the rumor mill, I think it's replaced an official Mother 3 English localization as the go-to most overly repeated Nintendo "leak".
Reminds me, it's been a while since I've seen a new Mother 3 rumor. I think the last time I saw was in January of 2017 just before the Switch launched.
@Toy_Link Why have a Mother 3 rumour when there are official unannounced news coming out for the Mother franchise later this year?
If people start making up news now and get it wrong then they will ruin all credibility for future rumours.
Rumour politics is funnier than actual gaming politics.
If you rule out games that require the Wii U touch screen (Nintendo Land, Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, Fatal Frame, and Game and Wario), and then games that have had ports to the 3DS or very similar sequels (Splatoon 1, Yoshi’s Wooly World, Mario Party and Tennis) then that leaves us with:
Pikmin 3
Super Mario 3D World
Xenoblade X
Star fox Zero and Guard
Wind Waker and Twilight Princess
In my opinion 2 of those games are no brainers, 2 might be uncertain due to cost to change them and previous apathy, and 2 would fit well in some sort of collection with Skyward Sword after BOTW2 is released.
Pikmin 3 on switch would be incredibly inferior to the Wii U version. I hope they're not wasting their time.
@Old_Man_Nintendo You and me both
Wonder what they will ad🤔 can’t see me buying it again.
@nessisonett yeah, it bums me out bc I supported the system on a lot of these games and there is next to no reason for us to buy it again as far as enhancements or additional content. I get that it is a business decision and they would almost be foolish not to do this. I just wish they added some incentive for those who supported the system and would release more original content.
@nessisonett It's not like a Pikmin 3 release or any Wii U port is preventing new games from happening. They're just easily in addition to. If anything, a Wii U port on the Switch is an indicator they're making a sequel or trying to gauge interest.
As someone who doesn't have a single Pikmin (well, Hey Pikmin, but that doesn't really count) I much rather would have a cartridge with the whole trilogy!
@nessisonett The idea that it's a way for them to make as few new games as possible is heinously laughable. They're literally making games at 3-4 times the rate they have any other generation and the ports have never slowed them down a bit. Also, the idea that the Wii U would be backwards compatible with the Switch (at least for physical media) is actually impossible and for digital would have been expensive and improbable. They already made it as small as they could for portability.
Pikmin 3 is a really special game for my son and I, we would both be delighted to play a spruced up version, provided it doesn’t lose anything, control wise, on the way to Switch. Pikmin 4 would be awesome.
There are not even many first Party Titles left that sold over 2 million copies on the WiiU and did not get a port or sequel on Switch.
One is 3D World and the other is WW HD.
Games that might be still interesting to port over are Fatal Frame, the Zelda remakes, Pikmin 3, 3D World and Xenoblade Chronicles X.
Games that might have fringe chance might be Color Splash (unlikeky now), Star Fox (would need new and better controls) and Woolly World.
Most people have not played any of these games since the majority sold rather poorly. So i can completely understand giving them a new home on the Switch.
As I've said before, ALL good Wii U games should come to Switch.
They deserve a wider audience.
One particular game I'd like to see is Star Fox Zero, reworked for classic controls on Switch and some added content.
Nintendo's insistence on Gamepad controls really divided the audience.
And Platinum's original concept of the game sounded a lot more epic than what we got; it feels smaller than Star Fox 64.
Either that, or Nintendo should get the Starlink team at Ubisoft working on a full Star Fox sequel with the Starlink engine.
I would love to see this game on switch, it was one of my personal favourites on WiiU, apart from the Lego games and Twilight Princess.
I know others have said they are concerned it may be the final nail in the Pikmin 4 coffin, personally I think it could be a good sign that things are happening with that title in that we are getting a wee refresher on the series first. I can hope...
A lot of the talk about Pikmin 4's long development goes back to a Miyamoto interview years ago in which he said the next Pikmin was almost ready.
In retrospect, he was almost certainly talking about "Hey! Pikmin" on 3DS.
Pikmin 4 has been confirmed to be in development but Pikmin is Miyamoto's pet project, he's probably taking his time with the game, not viewing it as a priority for the company, just as he did with Pikmin 3.
I've never played a Pikmin game, what is the general idea of the games? Anything else that it compares to? Are they really as great as everyone seems to say?
@Dringo
Proof that Pikmin 3 sold less than 1 million?
I thought Pikmin 4 was "ready" ages ago? Unless they're releasing 3 in the summer and then 4 at Christmas, I guess.
@fatleon5 Cute, isometric strategy games where you're basically using a horde of little creatures to navigate an alien landscape (which looks like an oversized garden) to gather parts of your spaceship so you can escape. Kind of unique, and a lot of fun.
I’ve been tempted to go back and replay Pikmin 3 and actually finish it this time while I have extra time. If it’s getting a rerelease, could they please announce so soon before I dig out my Wii U?
Heck, just release the whole trilogy in one big HD package.
All sounds good to me. I’m still very confused as to why Wind Waker HD hasn’t made the jump too. It would probably sell a good two million minimum. It’s also the perfect game for these dark times.
@Impaler-D completely agree with that, they announced and released Hey Pikmin a few months after he made that statement, I still don’t get why so many people believe he meant a different game lol.
@NintendoArchive Because of the map on the gamepad? Maybe you’re right. I do love that feature, but I guess we managed fine with the map on a button in 1&2. The part where it’ll shine is 1080p. 720p on the Wii U did make an otherwise incredibly beautiful game look a bit rough..
Why is everyone talking about Pikmin 4? Did it get announced? I thought there was talk of a new Pikmin ages ago, but that turnes out to be that awful 3DS game.
@fatleon5 Pikmin is a real time strategy game that... well, it’s fairly unique even within its genre - there’s not much to compare it with. Most RTS games are war games and the mechanics of Pikmin are fairly innovative.
Like most RTS games, you lead essentially an army (in this case, Pikmin) and fight enemies in real time, using strategy to defeat them rather than any sort of level up or upgrade system. Your abilities are mostly defined from the start, and you do not get stronger. You Hopefully learn to work more strategic as the game goes on. That’s where the similarities end. In Pikmin, you play as a little alien who is completely helpless and you command your Pikmin army with your whistle. You can have them split into groups, flank enemies, or even throw them onto enemies. They can build bridges and complete various tasks. They are individually VERY weak, and pretty much every other living thing is above them on the food chain. Everything is determined to eat, crush, burn, drown, electrocute, or poison your Pikmin, and they will do so with ease. With proper positioning and well aimed throws, you can overcome the predators, and your Pikmin will happily carry the corpse to their nest to make more seeds. Each game has things you need to collect (such as ship parts or treasures), usually with an end goal. Time is often an issue - by the end of each in game day, you must return all your Pikmin to their ship or they will be left behind and die. In the first game, you even had a limit of 30 days to beat the game, or else you get a game over. They’re not the easiest games but they’re very fun. Simple yet deep.
One last note: Pikmin come in multiple colors that define their abilities. Red are fireproof and slightly stronger than average. Blue can breathe in water. Yellow can be thrown higher, carry explosives (in the first game), and are electric proof (in later games). Purple are heavier but stronger. White are poisonous when consumed. And so on. You have to continually collect enemy corpses to replenish your troops.
@nessisonett,
I just think the franchises sales do not justify a new game at the moment, the original game on the Ganecube only sold just over 1 million copies, and the Wii game around the same, now that's on a console with a 100 million or so installed base it's pretty poor, the Wii U game sold around 1 million to, and to be fair the last two do not even state a million copies on some lists.
I think because this is a pet project of Miyamoto it gets a lot more attention than it probably should, however the potential on the Switch is much higher, as the console software sales ration is very high for Nintendo's first party titles, so this deluxe version has the potential to be the best selling release for the franchise, and if it could get to say 2-3 million copies, then this could pave the way for a new game, fingers crossed because the franchise deserves much better sales imho.
@nessisonett Not sure why you're getting so much slack, could it be that you hit a sore note? I'm with you though, for people who did own a Wii U the amount of ports is staggering. For us, there's no new Zelda, Mario Kart, Donkey Kong, Pikmin, or even Captain Toad to play. I absolutely get it from a finance perspective, it's easy money for ninty, but it also means that I spend a lot more money on my ps4.
Funny to see people still complaining about Ports, as if thy haven’t been a staple of every platform since the GBA.
Also, brand new Nintendo games in the last 12 months alone:-
Mario Maker 2
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3
Fire Emblem : Three Houses
Tetris 99
Astral Chain
Daemon X Machina
Luigis Mansion 3
Ring Fit Adventure
Stretchers
Pokemon Sword and Shield
Brain Training
Good Job
Animal Crossing New Horizons
Where there's 3 there's 4! Bring any and all Pikmin to Switch!
Make a new game already.
@HammerKirby MK8d is a little different than the other ports in that storing two items and a real battle mode made the title worth double dipping on. The others, not so much.
@Grandiajet yah, there was talk that Pikmin 4 was "in development", and that news is over 2 years old. I now believe we'll see it now that we're getting 3. Well, I hope anyway.
@ShaiHulud,
Well to be honest there are a lot of new games on the Swtch, and you could argue Zelda either way, as it was surely held up for the console, and we already know we are getting a second game as well, we have also seen new entries for lot of other games that would not have happened on the Wii U because of the low install base.
Now from Nintendo's point of view it makes perfect sense to have Wii U ports, as these games never reached their true potential on Nintendo's previous console, and also you have to understand that to the mass majority of Switch owners these will all be brand new games, and that they also have the potential to pave the way for new entries to these franchise as well.
To be honest the whole Switch has no games line is getting a little tiresome by now, and is only really pushed by core console owners that own P.C's, and the other consoles as well, you would think these people had too much to play.
I can understand people who have bought these re-released games previously for the Wii U being disappointed and a bit peeved that they're not getting any new games.
However, having said that, for me these kind of releases are very welcome. For all I owned a Wii U all I ever got it for was Wii Fit U. I never ventured into any other games so all of these ports to the Switch is really exciting for the likes of me who has never played games like Zelda, Pikmin, Mario etc until the last year or so.
I know a lot of people will be thinking I'm strange for never having played such huge titles but better late than never I suppose! I adore the Mario series and also the Zelda series. So re-released games would be an absolute bonus for the likes of me. I still have both my Wii and Wii U and have bought Galaxy 1 & 2 as well as 3D World for them but to be honest I don't like playing on those consoles now. I much prefer the look and feel of my Switch. If I'd played the games on the original consoles first I'd likely not have noticed but going from the Switch back to the old consoles is not enjoyable in my opinion. I hate the controls for Galaxy.
So whilst I can see both sides of the argument here for these ports, they are really very welcome to me, I'd really love to see the other Zelda and Mario games ported to Switch and the Pikmin one looks good too.
I have so many games to finish now and so little time!!
@electrolite77,
I am not sure if they are trolling sometimes, but probably just looking at it from a hardcore point of view that the console does not have loads of third party triple AAA games on it, which to be honest was never going to happen anyway.
@Sugarkist,
They overlook the Wii U was one of the worst selling consoles in Nintendo's history, and these games have a massive potential audience.
@Collette,
To be honest I am glad he is more of a producer these days, the new blood at Nintendo are getting much more freedom, and lookin at the success of Splatoon it's a good thing.
@nessisonett,
You have to think a little outside the hardcore gamers perspective with the Switch, as when Nintendo tried to engage the core with the Wii U it backfired, as there are already two massive players in that console space.
Nintendo have to occupy their own console space, the Switch was a perfect answer to Nintendo as it combined their handheld and home consoles, thus leaving all it's development free for one console, and it's done pretty well considering we are only about half way through the consoles lifespan, add the fact that with it's mobile chips, it would be easy to do a pro version at some point, one thin I do think is pretty clear is this will be Nintendo's future for a long time as the tech is very easy to upgrade.
People keep moaning about a virtual console, but also moaned when they had to buy the same games over and over again, I will bet you anything that the popularity of the virtual console will not justify there being one, which is why it is not there.
You and others sound like you are making a personal wish list of things you would personally like to see on the switch, rather than a plan of things that would actually sell well, and remember when all this stuff was available on the Wii U, Nintendo had it's worst home console generation ever.
I will say it now, and mark my words the release of both Sony and Microsoft's new consoles will not make one ounce of difference to the Nintendo Switch.
@NoNoseNosferatu,
Fingers and toes crossed for HD remasters.
@Sinister,
The main one was "Mario kart 8", which sold around 8 mllion copies on the Wii U, but just look how it's performed on the Switch, not that it's a simple port however, the new battle mode and 1080p presentation made it an instant double dip for me, but back to my point it's no wonder Nintendo are giving these games another lease of life, and it does further cement Mario kart as Nintendo's number one selling franchise, it's a beast pure and simple.
Pretty sure 9 can not be that far away, pure rumor at the moment but this could be the big 2020 holiday game, keep the faith guys.
@Curly_Brace,
If you check most sales lists, both 2 and 3 do not get listed in the games that sold at least 1 million copies, so either way we are splitting hairs here, the franchise is a very poor performer for a main Nintendo franchise and it's only chance is to gain some traction with a release of Pikmin on a system with a large install base, the moaners of the ports just do not see that this is probably the only chance we will ever have of Pikmin 4 ever seeing the light of day.
Throw enough crap at the wall and eventually one of these "rumors" is going to be right. Why do you guys buy into this silliness?
Plz plz plz plz!!! Actually kinda glad I skipped Wii U now
@johnvboy Fair point about Zelda. I get Nintendo's point though, just like I said in my previous post. If I were in their shoes I'd do the same thing. However, that doesn't take away that I'm a bit disappointed with regard to the lack of new 1st party titles (I'm not saying there aren't any new games, there's plenty of great indie games to be found).
@AG_Awesome
I soooooo what both Mario Galaxy games on Switch, I’ve never played them before. Hopefully they make them Switch Lite compatible.
Can we get pikmin 4 first before pikmin 3 deluxe ultimate
@johnvboy They definitely do have a potential massive audience, myself being one of them. To me, it seems such a shame that some great games have been kind of left to languish on the unpopularity of the Wii U. After having watched videos on YouTube and read topics on this forum, I know there were some excellent games on the Wii U but because of the negativity the Wii U got, these games have not achieved the potential they deserve.
I do think it would be good to re-release them on the Switch, for the new audience, the audience who missed out due to not liking the Wii U and in some cases, the hardcore gamers who might possibly have their interest piqued by some additional content or something that would make them want to play the game again.
The potential is there for Nintendo to make good on games that have sadly fallen by the wayside somewhat due to an unpopular console release.
Fatal Frame would be great on Switch. Was a good game and it deserves a second chance and an actual physical version that isn't limited to a more expensive special edition
I hope number 4 isnt too far away, already played 3
"...I get the impression it’s been ready to go for a while."
It's been ready since 2015
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2015/09/pikmin_4_is_very_close_to_completion_though_its_platform_is_unclear
@ShaiHulud,
There are a lot more new games that people are admitting though.
So has Pikmin 4
@Sugarkist,
Or to bring back franchises that are not that massive selling, I mean one of the most requested games that has not sold great numbers is the Metroid series, 2 million copies for the original game, number 2 does not even chart so I am guessing it's around 1 million copies, and the third game on the Wii's massive installed base was only around 1.39 million copies, so it's surprising Nintendo are making a fourth game, but again the potential of the Switch has made it possible.
People on these forums rarely look at things from a business perspective, they tend to feel that Nintendo should just release games they personally want, without taking into account Nintendo are a company that needs to make money etc, Nintendo need to branch out into mobile games and make good use of it's assets and older games to finance it's more speculative titles like "Metroid prime 4".
I like 1-3 all just fine. 2s my favorite followed by 3. So happy this games coming and I can’t drink all that gorgeous berry juice once again! This Mario 3D and the two Zelda ports are all that I’d really like to have from the Wii U. I really think Zelda will get some remasters for the 35th anniversary like we could be seeing from Mario.
@Heavyarms55 it’s ok to get excited about speculation
@Curly_Brace Nintendo announce first-party game that exceed a million copies in their financials, and Pikmin 3 has never been listed.
It's amazing how Nintendo is able to capitalize on the Wii U's failure by selling all these old games at full price.
I have to say it's kind of unfair towards those of us who stuck with Nintendo in the Wii U era. I bought a lot of the major first party games for the Wii U, including Pikmin 3. I'd really, really love a Pikmin 4, as well as my kids. Instead, we get these full price ports with maybe minor improvements all the time. And I get that this is fine for everybody who skipped the Wii U, and works fine for Nintendo. Just not for us.
I can't back this with numbers and I haven't researched this, but I'm starting to feel that the Wii U was a richer console in terms of quality original first party games than the Switch is.
This might be somewhat off-topic, but looking ahead, XBox is starting to look promising. Especially for people who also have a gaming PC or a current gen XBox, Game Pass is just amazing value. You can buy a game once or get it via Game Pass and play it on your current and next-gen console and your PC. Also, their controllers work very well with PC, and they seem to have amazing hardware designs.
With both Sony and Nintendo I feel that they have been getting somewhat lazy lately, or at least pretty conservative. Both just keep doing what has worked before, not taking risks, and not improving anything substantially. Iterating, re-releasing, remaking, the safe stuff. The press also encourages this in the gaming industry, but also in music, and probably elsewhere. When something "iconic" is re-released from the distant past, it is sure to get close to 100% scores from critics. Too bad it took no risks, it has next to zero new creative value, and is generally just stuff that we've seen, played, or heard before.
And it is a bit scary that this regressive approach is so damn profitable. It's just not right, creating new things should be valued more.
Pikmin 4 has clearly been paused or repurposed
@electrolite77 the problem with your list from a old school Nintendo perspective (someone who grew up on Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Dk) your list has only Luigi's Mansion and Tetris that interest me. To make matters worse I basically have to buy an online subscription to play Tetris.
If you bought these Wii u versions digitally Nintendo should be able to find out by your Nintendo ID and just send you a new game code for the switch. I don't expect my Wii u disks to work but digital purchases yes. Also it makes me question what's going to happen after this system.
I am happy though that they are releasing this. And at least for me who never owned a Wii during the 360 time (I tried to play one after but personally I found the graphics terrible and remembered why I switched) am super excited about a possible Mario galaxy remaster. But I do understand if you've been following Nintendo forever that you would want new games of the big franchises.
Are we ignoring how many times Liam Robertson has been wrong? I guess we are... the guys a clown and all he cares about is clout.
@johnvboy
Yeah possibly there’s a correlation between the third party ports and Wii U ports in peoples head. But as you say Switch was never going to be home to the latest Western AAA stuff. It simply isn’t designed for that.
As for Wii U ports, I can’t see much evidence of them slowing down first party development. Nintendo are still putting out loads of new games, they’re just pretty much adding ports on top. And having burnished the Wii U-which was doomed to sell badly before it was even launched-with games of the quality of Tropical Freeze, MK8, 3D World and Pikmin 3 (assuming the latter two will happen) they would be insane not to try and realise the true sales potential of those games.
@sixrings
Yeah fair point. Personal taste is what it is, and while Mario, Zelda and Pokémon fans have been very well catered for other franchises continue to languish. I miss others like Advance Wars, Wave Race and F-Zero as well as Metroid and DK. Yes they are traditionally low sellers but if they don’t get a chance on a system that shifts first-Party software at the rate the Switch does when will they? Hopefully they really get behind a Metroid revival and at least turn it into something of a Fire Emblem-Level success.
I certainly haven’t bought everything on that list but I put it up to counteract suggestions that new Nintendo software has dried up. If it isn’t to the individuals taste that’s unlucky, but it is out there.
now, NL is creating rumord, too? This is bad.
@gergelyv
It’s always the case with any form of art/entertainment that doing something ‘new’ becomes more difficult. It’s equally true that people like to enjoy their favourite films/books/paintings/music over and over again and will often rebuy it on new technology when that brings benefits. There’s no reason for Gaming to be any different.
All I know is Nintendo fans used to mock PlayStation for all their ports at the beginning of the generation yet here we are mid generation begging for ports. Then again Nintendo fans thought they were above DLC since games should come complete and paid online. Maybe Nintendo fans standards have lowered. Maybe it's not my high standards but the lower and lower standards being accepted everyday because it's "good enough" or because I don't understand "Nintendo is a business."
Yeah okay. I'll believe these rumors when something actually comes of them. Still waiting on the "strong rumors" of Persona 5 and the "corroborated rumors" of Metroid Prime Trilogy and Star Fox Grand Prix.
@nessisonett okay so serious question. A lot people mention Nintendo being lazy on BC for Switch. But, how can you implement BC when the media format for the two consoles cannot be any different. And the architecture is so vastly different! How did you expect BC to be a thing on Switch?
I love my Wii U! I still believe it is a fabulous console! But, there are so many people who did not get to play it. That is Nintendo's fault for not marketing the console and it's games well. And by leaving these great games on that console they are just going to be become obscure and harder to access as the years go on. If you already played the game you don't have to buy it. I've maybe bought one title for the Switch that I already owned on Wii U. Everything else I skipped. But, I'm glad people can finally enjoy this outstanding games if they choose to get them.
@Varkster Your response to @nessisonett was incredibly insulting and says more about your inability to see clearly through your fanboy goggles than it says about his inability to assess the current state of the Switch.
First you engage in the Red Herring logical fallacy which ignores the central premise of his argument by distracting with an irrelevant argument of your own. Also known as the "But Sony" argument. He isn't talking about Sony, he's talking about Nintendo, so bringing up Sony has no business in the discussion. Also, I'm not sure how this argument is relevant, he's suggesting that Nintendo is regurgitating all the releases of the WiiU at the expense of new releases on the Switch which is a demonstrably true statement. You said that Sony didn't release first party software for two years into the PS4 lifecycle. Did you mean to say that Sony only released ports of their older games in the first two years because you don't clearly state that?
If you are suggesting that Sony took two years to release any first party original games, I would say you are wrong. In their first two years they released Killzone, Knack, Sound Shapes, Escape Play, Infamous First Light, Infamous Second Son, Driveclub, and a number of smaller titles and remasters. All in all, Sony's first party output in the first two years was much larger than the Switch.
But, I'll entertain your silly notion that something Sony did "at launch" (your words, not mine) is somehow relevant to Nintendo doing the same thing three years into the Switch's lifecycle (actually coma cycle would seem to be more relevant because the signs of life on the console barely constitute living). Sony has released a bunch of titles from their back catalog over the years, but only has always been a console that relies more on third party support than first party. There are plenty of big titles from other publishers that pad out their release schedule and make the occasional release / remaster a fun diversion / nostalgia trip.
Nintendo, who continually gimp their consoles have to rely on their first party releases to generate interest in their consoles because third parties aren't really interested in porting to a system that will require too many compromises and a history of not providing good sales. Because of this, anyone that owned a WiiU is looking at the Switch and felling Deja Vu. The console is just a rehash of games WiiU owners have seen before.
And you insultingly point out that Paper Mario has a new game coming out as if that one original title (we'll have to wait and see how "original" it really is) makes up for the fact that Nintendo seems even more lazy than usual this console generation.
I think @nessisonett fine understanding of business and it is entirely possible that Nintendo will be in some trouble when the next generation machines launch and they receive even less third party support than they already do. So, next time you accuse someone of talking out their bum, make sure yours is sparkling clean first.
what's so good about Pikmin 3?
@Ambassador_Kong as a PS4 owner the issue was amplified for years because of last-gen ports being the most of what we got. There was no "must-have" PS4 game for a loooonnnngggg time. Bloodborne was the first real must have PS4 game that is a niche game for a very niche market. And while we can look back now and say there was some good stuff. At the time owning a PS4 during its first year or two on the market was torture! Just go back and read those old articles or watch those old vids... They were less than glowing.
I believe the Switch had a much stronger overall first two years on the market. Let's not forget it launched with Breath of the Wild and closed its first year with Mario Odyssey. That and even last year had some real sluggers with Fire Emblem Three Houses and Luigi's Mansion 3. This year will be interesting, but we are getting Xenoblade DE (a full top down remake of the original not a port) and Origami King a couple months from now. We have no idea what Nintendo is planning for the back half of this year.
That's my two cents take it or leave it really.
@Wexter you send out new games to people who have digital copies on their Wii u from their Nintendo Id. It isn't rocket science. Yes physical is more of a challenge. You could have a disc exchange program that would create good will.
This game was most unique, engaging and fun experience I had on the Wii U, and what made it really work and special was playing with the gamepad,
def best use of it on a game, it really improved the gameplay
@nessisonett
I guess when only 10 people bought the system then there's a lot of games they can re-release.
I hated the wii so much I couldn't justify every buying the wii-u. They got me back with the Switch but the inability to deal with the internet and the lack of focus/upgrade on the Switch means this will probably be my last N device.
@sword_9mm if such a trivial amount of people bought the Wii u and Nintendo is such a family friendly good will company there is no reason they couldn't upgrade the games digitally or offer a disc exchange program. I believe that's the worst part for Wii u owners. They were the loyalist Nintendo buyers yet they didn't feel they got treated well. Even the 3DS got the ambassador program.
@Ambassador_Kong
“ Nintendo is regurgitating all the releases of the WiiU at the expense of new releases on the Switch which is a demonstrably true statement”
No it isn’t.
“In their first two years they released Killzone, Knack, Sound Shapes, Escape Play, Infamous First Light, Infamous Second Son, Driveclub, and a number of smaller titles and remasters. All in all, Sony's first party output in the first two years was much larger than the Switch.”
Two of those are Vita ports. Sony and Nintendo released roughly the same number of new games in the first two years of their respective systems. However to get to that number with Sony you have to include a lot of minor Digital releases that were also on Vita and/or PS3 whereas with Nintendo it takes in Zelda, Splatoon, Mario, Smash, Pokemon etc.
I bought a PS4 in 2014 and instantly liked it because while it was almost entirely getting games you could play on PS3/360, it played them a lot better (GTA V, PES, Shadows of Mordor, Alien Isolation etc). In fact it’s to Sony’s credit that they were still putting out things like Little Big Planet 3 and Resogun on PS3 and supported that system for so long. But they were slow to get going with exclusives and padded out their Library with loads of ports in the first couple of years. I didn’t and don’t have a problem with that but it’s the truth.
@nessisonett many of these games were designed with two-screen experiences, and touch screen, as essential features that mean a “port” is not just a port, and requires significant work.
Even if the Switch had something like a disk drive in the dock, it would just not be able to simply run Wii U games. Same holds true for a virtual machine for just downloads.
Easiest first party games to port over likely would had been just Breath of the Wild (that didn’t use second screen or touch at all) or Mario Kart 8 (that used the second screen only for a honk) and those happened to be the first ports we got.
@sixrings
I agree. N doesn't and is a horrible company honestly.
Sure we all loved the NES/Snes but that was where they ended for me. I gave the N64 a shot (garbage) and the Gamecube (more garbage) and the wii (super trash dumpster fire).
I wish they'd just release the games on the PC. Don't have to give Sony or MS anything on their boxes but PC wouldn't hurt them any. Just think of what they could do with all that power.
@Tharsman that's true. New Super Mario U deluxe, Super Smash Bros U, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze must have been brutal ports with all the gamepad features they had to replace.
@sword_9mm I like their first party games even if they don't run the way I wish they did. But just because their games are kid friendly doesn't make me believe that they are any less greedy than Sony and Microsoft. As a owner of four switches and every Nintendo product minus a virtual boy (I should have bought them when they were on sale) I am super happy with my games but everything else leaves a lot to be desired.
@sixrings I’m a Wii U owner, hell not only am I one, I have almost every singe exclusive Wii U game.
You want an exchange program? Sell your Wii U copy eBay (don’t trade it in to Game or GameStop.)
I see people complain about Wii U ports but I'd like to point them to the PS3, which is a PROBLEM. The systems generally aren't surviving much longer, and there are games like Little Big Planet and MGS4 which are going to be completely lost to time on that thing if they aren't ported. Assuming the Switch form factor will be used going forward, please port everything, Nintendo.
@sixrings Super Smash Ultimate is pretty much it’s own game, not a port. Tropical freeze is one of the few I’m missing on the Wii U, but NSMNU did have touch features that got removed and replaced with entirely different features (new playable characters that actually play differently instead.)
@gergelyv,
I doubt Nintendo are aiming these releases at the people that have already bought them, and as I said there are lots of Switch owners that would have never played these games, a for the Wii U being a richer software platform is just not true, but sometimes nostalgia plays tricks on us.
@Tharsman I did sell my two Wii u systems and traded up. That said Nintendo could have offered an ambassador program. I'm not saying they needed to but people are making it sound like it would be impossible to.
@sixrings it would had been ridiculously expensive and unnecessary, TBH.
Nintendo my be doing better now, money wise, but they were about to go bankrupt at the launch of the Switch. They could not afford any stupid trade-in program, especially when people could always just sell the things online themselves.
@Tharsman all it would cost them is the lost income of the person potentially buying a second copy. The person pays the shipment. Nintendo sends the code. And the 3DS made sure they weren't broke. There's plenty of excuses from Nintendo fans while many at the same time claim they are such a family friendly company.
As soon as the Switch was rumored I knew this would happen. Nintendo invested a lot of time and money in these games but due to the failure of the Wii U most people never played them. Its a no brainer. Boring for people like me who had a Wii U but I totally get it
Pikmin 1 was by far my favorite. It was magic. The others made me feel very anxious and pressured, in not a good way.
i do not like switching characters and I really liked Olimar!
Pikmin 3 was too complex and messy with the control options on Wii U I still,aftr all these years have no preferred way to play, so I just don't get back to that game.
I find these rumors about “ready to go” games a bit hard to believe in this day and age. I’m set on games, but many people are craving them while they sit at home, so any games that are “ready to go” I imagine would be announced and quickly launched. They may be far along, but there’s something holding them back if they exist at all.
Pikmin 3 was a lot of fun on the WiiU. I really enjoyed playing the DLC with my daughter. I do remember the GamePad being useful for this one, but it's been several years since I've played it.
@Crockin Hey I'm all for having fun. I just don't know why sites like this treat this speculation with special credence? We all do it, we all have our own guesses. And because of that someone is bound to be right. That doesn't mean they had access to any special info or will be right next time.
If it does, I will only need the rest of the Wii U Mario titles on the switch so that I can retire my Wii U.
@electrolite77 @Wexter
If you're happy with the output of the Switch, congratulations. I had a WiiU and honestly feel that the Switch is nothing more than a slight upgrade. Personally I find the selection derivative and unimaginative. I also hate the fact that Nintendo seems to dumb down the gameplay more every generation so everyone can press start to win. The Nintendo that made games like Yoshi's Island and Majora's Mask is long gone.
But that's my opinion, just like you have yours. We can agree to disagree, but we should try to be respectful when we do it. Which @Varkster was absolutely not doing in his response to @nessisonett .
@Ambassador_Kong Okay, so I can't actually believe I'm about to respond to this drivel. All in all I don't really care about my responses enough to actually go through and re-read and rewrite them on Nintendo Life, because I don't think this is a valuable spending of my time. If something I said didn't seem fleshed out or cryptic it just means that I didn't care to invest an hour into my comment because I have better things to do.
Firstly let me just say that calling me a fanboy while pointing out about how "insulting" my initial comment was is just funny as f*ck, showing dominance and adding credibility to your comment when there is little to none. It's very sneaky and immature of you to start a long response in that way.
My entire point of the response was that Nintendo is doing exactly what Sony and Microsoft were doing at the start of the generation. They are putting out re-releases in order to fill in the blanks of their library because their first party original output is stuttering, thanks to increased production values and demands.
I said in my comment that there was no value in owning Sony's PS4 in the first two years because little to no games on it were original and the vast majority of the first party titles that were on the system (including the ones you listed) were absolutely trash and cheap non-system-sellers. This is coming from a person who OWNED the system in the first 2 years of it's lifecycle. I ABSOLUTELY remember it only selling because of hype and not thanks to games. Within those same two years on the market Nintendo's first party output in my eyes has been excellent, despite the current lack of absolutely original titles. Releasing Wii U titles on the system is a very smart decision as barely anybody owned the system and they can shift their focus on creating new, bigger original experiences. The games you listed absolutely lack any identity and were utter boring garbage, aside from arguably inFAMOUS Second Son. In my opinion even that game was bland and a chore to play as well, but that's a whole other argument.
The reason bringing this up is relevant is that @nessisonett seems to believe that the Switch will stutter once the PS5 and the new Xbox are revealed because of its lacking output as opposed to the two consoles. I disagree with him simply because what he is saying is an assumption and is not based on anything but the current announced games for the Switch. The reason I brought up Paper Mario is because it's literally a game which was announced a DAY ago and it's not a re-hash or port. This isn't considering, however, that there are many original games in the pipeline for the system including but not limited to No More Heroes 3, Shin Megami Tensei 5, Bayonetta 3, Breath of the Wild 2, Metroid Prime 4 just off the top of my head.
Nintendo gimping their consoles is quite a funny statement, because I see it as the complete opposite. The Switch has a very great strength as opposed to its competition - the portability. If power screams a concern to you, then I'm sorry for you. Developers should find more appeal in a console for which they can develop much more affordably with smaller projects.
@Ambassador_Kong Developers took this as a "testing waters bring whatever we want in remastered form onto the Switch" and started releasing only re-hashes and re-releases. This is not within Nintendo's power as a company and I don't see how this is relevant in the argument whatsoever. Establishing relations as Nintendo did with Platinum isn't an everyday ordeal and requires a lot of business interaction and money investments. I also want to point out that the third party games that are re-released on the Switch in singles, trilogies and packages for the most part have never seen the light of day on a single Nintendo system. They also have never been playable in portable form, which means a lot of people who have skipped over these titles on release will absolutely pick them up on the Switch if interested with the massive strength of portability. It makes a large amount of sense why these developers are porting over their games, it introduces a new fandom to their franchises and brings lots of revenue. If a sequel or a spin-off or even a game by the same developer with no past connection to any games beforehand is put on the Switch, it's likely to see a big audience anticipating its release, simply because of their provided support with previous ports. Sony's PS4, on the other hand, saw a massive amount of re-released titles from third parties which were all available on PS3, PS2 and the Vita. These games were readily available for the fans on their previous generation systems (with slight performance differences). I think you can see the difference without me openly stating it.
My comparison to Sony was showing that people give Sony a pass for lacklustre first-party output, however Nintendo seems to get a lot of criticism and you very much proved that notion.
I think you as well are a self-entitled little turkey who also looks at a business and pretends to see and analyse how well it's run and what they have in the pipeline. I'd say you're comparable to the industry joke Michael Pachter, except Pachter actually has professional experience with business and a long-term knowledge (albeit flawed) of the gaming industry. People running these companies are many in numbers and much more intelligent than you. Stop being pretentious and arrogant believing you or anybody else on this website for that matter knows how to run a business. As well-written and long as your comment is, I'm sorry your response is even more bizarre and clueless than the original comment I was responding to. I do not care how many insults you may shove in your comment, it doesn't add to your credibility and I don't think people should be discouraged from pointing out that some comments on this website, despite the person who wrote them, are simply a crock of sh*t. I will once again reiterate that calling me a fanboy to validate your argument is downright retarded as I game for the vast majority on my PC and have owned a PS4, PSVita, PSP and the original Xbox before in my life. Have a good day, buddy.
Of course ports sometimes stop new games from coming out. Anyone who says otherwise is kidding themselves. That’s why there’s not going to be a Mario Kart 9 this generation. Conversely, the release of Super Smash Bros Ultimate means there’s not going to be a Smash 4 port for the Switch. I also don’t give much credibility to someone that’s so far been wrong about Metroid Prime Trilogy, though I understand that with so little Real News to report it’s necessary to report on rumours intensifying so that the site can stay in business.
@Joe-b I really think it depends on how well Pikmin 3 Ultimate/Deluxe/Extra/Plus/whatever sells. If it comes out before the world stops being on fire it has a real chance of doing very well. I hope Pikmin finally gets the sales it deserves, and becomes more of a priority for Nintendo.
They should release hd versions of the first 2 games also as well and hd versions of the first 2 paper mario also.
The 2 zelda remasters- windwaker and twilight princess hd and four swords adventures from the gamecube, that was a great and fun game.
Well Pikmin 4 was supposedly almost finished 5 years ago, and that was based on Miyamotos words, not a leakers. I refuse to believe it until it’s officially announced
Good news, Never had a Wii U, So never played its exclusives. The only concern is price. I think 39.99 is more fair than 59.99. Since most these games are more or less a direct ports, with few additions.
@thesilverbrick If you played it on the gamepad you didn’t need to use motion controls - I’m interested in how they’re going to get the galaxy games to work tho
@Euler
Ports don’t need anywhere near the same resource as developing new games. It’s wrong to think that each port is instead of a new game. In reality you’d have to lose 4 or 5 ports to generate a new game, and then you’re also losing the revenue that those 4 or 5 bring in which brings its own issues, as well as not having engines ported across for sequels.
@1UP_MARIO Thinking about it, this might be a good strategy. Bringing out pikmin 3 first will rejuvenate interest and introduce new people to the franchise. I would think this should garner more sales for the inevitable pikmin 4.
@Grandiajet yah, here's hoping it has a good run!
Don't forget the first port, Breath of the Wild, which was delayed one year to launch along the original version and had some GamePad features removed.
@Grot The only problem is the lack of cross-buy and the premium price tag for Nintendo's ports. Otherwise no one would complain about Wii U games on Switch.
@Dringo Pikmin 3 sold 1.26m.
@rockodoodle Yeah I agree or a cross-buy option for those that bought the digital version, at the very least.
@Grot Well hopefully they have learnt their mistake and with the new eshop-cloud based system won't lock the games specifically to switch but for future consoles as well.
@sixrings So I will use the closest comparable to the Switch. I will exclude Microsoft from this because their consoles are basically PCs so the porting process is vastly different and does not face as many hurdles.
From the PS3 to the PS4 there were only FOUR games that supported an upgrade program. Those were all games that came out relatively around the release of the PS4 and were also on the PS3. I don't even think the offer is still available. But, that is beside the points.
Now, what I will say is doing a quick search on the PS4 store I found a bunch of PS3 titles that were ported over and were charged at full price at release. The Last of Us, Heavy Rain, Shadows of the Colossus (this was a "remake" of a PS2 game, but also came apart of the ICO collection), God of War 3, Beyond Two Souls, Grand Theft Auto V, Dishonored, Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin, Dark Souls, Final Fantasy X and X-2 HD, Darksiders 1&2... I can go on. But, all these games even if you have the PS3 disc and put into your PS4 will not work. You have to rebuy these games on the PS4 to play these games. We can get into PSNow, but the quality of PSNow is highly debatable as a service. This was because these games ran on CELL which was at the time developer unfriendly and now that everything is written for X86... is even more of a pain. So, even porting from PS3 to PS4 is not an easy endeavour and that is just going from one architecture to another.
But, if we compare the Switch to the PS4 we can see that even more work will need to be done to get a lot of these games to work. One of them is Gamepad integration. They would need to strip that from these games and in some cases like the recently releases Wonderfull 101 required a bit of work. For some Switch games that might not even be possible like Star Fox Zero. The developers at Monolith have even stated when looking at Xenoblade X port is very expensive and would require a top-down re-write. That is for a heavily demanded game and was a Wii U system seller. So, based on Monolith's own comments we can deduce that porting a game from Wii U to Switch is not as easy as it sounds. That's ignoring the logistical issues such as architecture such as going from PowerPC to a variation on ARM, porting the engines, removing gamepad features and the question of optical discs and how to get them to work on the Switch.
Even if we were to talk about some form of upgrade program? You're not entitled to one, just like how Sony doesn't offer one. We do see it on Steam every so often, but that is on a publisher-by-publisher basis. And even then it can be very controversial when they do so because some PC gamers see it as a forced upgrade and losing the original game. But, just looking at the cost of porting and logistical issues offering an upgrade program that would require mailing and checking old Wii U accounts, it just way too expensive for Nintendo. The same reason Sony doesn't offer one. Microsoft does, but it requires the original disc, which we know just not doable on Switch.
I'm sorry, but this is way too much of complicated issues to even discuss. It's not laziness, it's just a complicated issue that will only get more complicated as the digital future looms near. Publishers coming and going, "forced upgrades", publishers choosing what game gets a free/discounted upgrade and what don't... that is not even counting the technical issues that will be faced.
@Wexter I never made it out like Sony was innocent either. But the fact is the ps3 was a successful console so people enjoyed that console thoroughly and had their fair share of time with it. What Wii u owners are upset about is they loyally bought into one of Nintendo's worse selling console which was not well supported and now are being resold either the same games or very similar games.
I own four switches so clearly I still support Nintendo but they could have made better policies to support the very people who supported them during their worse times.
Again they could have sent out codes to the Wii u digital game owners. There wasn't many of us so it wouldn't have bankrupt the company. Instead they chose to attempt and sell us the same games twice. It's nice to know their upper ups took cuts when chips were down. It would have been nicer if they threw a bone to those who supported them during that time.
@ShaiHulud Given that there are under 14 million Wii U owners, the porting situation is just something we have to grin and bear. There have been plenty of original Switch games and its had decent 3rd party support. If these ports can amass greater interest in certain IP and justify new releases in series such as Pikmin, Captain Toad and Donkey Kong etc then theyre worthwhile in the long run.
Plus to be honest given how close Wii U and Switch are in power i wouldnt want a Mario Kart 9 on Switch. It wouldnt be distinctive enough from 8. Far better to have 9 as a launch window title for Nintendos next console.
@sixrings Bro you are not entitled to a cross gen upgrade programme. You have your Wii U. You therefore should feel under no obligation to buy the Switch ports. Play them on your Wii U and enjoy the Switch for its original content of which there is plenty.
What youre proposing sounds lovely, happy and smiley but as nice and family friendly as Nintendo are, they are still a business so your suggestion is not realistic.
@Ambassador_Kong
Yeah of course if you’re not impressed that’s fine. Personally I’ve found them to be on outstanding form this generation but that’s all totally subjective.
I’m just making the point that it’s now pretty standard for any system to have a lot of previous gen ports especially early on. Both PS4 and XB1 had this and all current info suggests their successors will be the same.
I also disagree that PS5 and XB1X will impact Switch much. Nintendo have never had an issue leveraging convenience and their Games library to sell against much more powerful Home systems, and having only a small proportion of the games PS4 and XB1 have hasn’t impacted it much. But you know, time will tell. Again that’s all opinions.
@andykara2003
This is exactly what they’re doing
@sixrings
“ just because their games are kid friendly doesn't make me believe that they are any less greedy than Sony and Microsoft”
Totally agree. Once everyone starts accepting they are businesses and only exist to make money, understanding their motives gets a lot easier. It takes away the emotional attachment and the expectations of favours you aren’t going to get.
@sixrings But, that's a little of a double-standard. You bought a Wii U because it provided games that you wanted to play. Not, to support Nintendo as a company. Let's not forget here if the PS4 had a bad launch there would have been NO MORE PLAYSTATION OR PLAYSTATION IPs PERIOD! Sony as a company was about to go bankrupt due to failed products and movies between 2011-2014. Nintendo was never in that situation and made smart business decisions that kept them from facing the same issue, due to the influx of cash from the DS (154 mill), Wii (101 mill) and 3DS (75.77 mill) combined successes which were sold at profit. The PS3 until late in its lifespan (2010) was sold at a loss which did not help Sony's pocketbooks. If any company needed goodwill it was Sony.
We also need to get out of our heads that these ports are made for Wii U owners. Nintendo has done a great job at increasing the value of these ports by adding extra content like in Mario Kart 8, Tokyo Mirage Sessions, Captain Todd etc. But, those are just incentives for those who bought these games to get a little extra value if they repurchased these games. But, these ports are meant for people who skipped out on the Wii U. They don't expect us to buy these games because we already own them. If we choose to repurchase these games we can, but that is our choice.
No company owes the consumer anything more than the end product they delivered. Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft are not our friends. Nintendo does a lot right by the consumer by not doing non-sense like Lootboxes or other Microtransactions. That and when they do a Season Pass they make sure it has value! And, they only tell you to purchase it if you trust it has the value that you want! Nintendo is also, one of the few AAA publishers that actually seem to be fun to work for as they promote a healthy work-life balance and it's the upper-ups who take the hit so it does not impact their employees.
But, if we include the cost that these ports were to make with the extra content if they just gave them away for free... that will harm Nintendo. It's an unsustainable practice and a lot of these games are 3-5-year-old games now. When does it become old-enough for Nintendo to not do an upgrade for them? And when is the statute of limitations on how old these games get before we can rebuy them without a discount? 5-years, 8-years, 10-years? If someone chooses to buy a Switch game at $60 because they enjoyed it on the Wii U or its a game they missed out on that's on them. If I feel the port does not offer enough that my Wii U version does not I don't have to buy it. That is my stance on it. I bought these games for my Wii U and I still have my Wii U so I don't need to get them for my Switch. If you want these games for your Switch, but don't want to pay full price wait for a sale. Nintendo does a number of them on the eShop and Black Friday is always a good time to buy them.
@Wexter how much does Nintendo pay you or what are their volunteer benefits.
@Scoopz hey man sorry you feel I'm entitled. I'm not. I've been buying the ports. 5 copies of Mario Kart 8 deluxe over here. Just trying to put some perspective from Wii u owners. I guess we all sound entitled while to us you all sound defensive.
@sixrings so I have to be paid by Nintendo for me to say I'm not buying a Wii U port to Switch if it does not have the value I want??? I only own like one port which is Bayonetta 2 and that's because I wanted a Spectacle Hack and Slash on the Switch.
I'm also not defending Nintendo just pointing out clear logistical issues and costs that make what you're saying make no sense. I've also praised Microsoft's Gamepass and BC support and I do not own Xbone. Does that mean I'm paid by Microsoft? I also have owned every Sony console since the beginning and I've been very critical of Sony. Despite loving God of War and the Yakuza games.. I've also been critical of Nintendo when I think they did a boo-boo. I did not think BotW Season Pass had value and the dungeons were kinda meh.
Point out one thing I've said that means I'm being paid by Nintendo? Just because I can see this from their perspective and provide counter points?
@electrolite77 I'm ok with the business side and koodos to them for convincing so many people they are different than other corporate beasts. But they have done enough to leave a sour taste in my mouth. Microsoft on the other hand has been super pro consumer which I appreciate. I'm not an idiot though I believe their good will is only because they have been mostly in third place.
@Wexter you're writing full essays to try to convert me. You shouldn't care that much what I think. More words aren't magically going to convince me. Thanks though.
@andykara2003 You couldn’t play any of the Prime Trilogy games with the GamePad on Wii U. That feature only worked on Wii games that were compatible with the Classic Controller, and the Metroid Prime Trilogy was not. The Wii Remote and Nunchuck are the only way to play Prime 3. It has never been playable without motion controls.
@sixrings but, I'm just writing down my thoughts on this??? I'm a long winded writer? You've not even really responded to any point I made? I've only ever cared to understand your perspective not to convince you. And then point out why your points are not that solid. And because of that I'm a paid Nintendo shill and not just a knowledgeable consumer on the products I enjoy from both a business sense and technical sense???
Sorry bro, but you're clearly delusional if you think otherwise about me.
@sixrings Ive no reason to be defensive. I dont own shares in Nintendo. Youve posted in a public forum which leaves your comments open to replies and criticism. I saw your post. Didnt agree with your perspective and therefore replied. The magic of a commenting section
All it comes down to is you as a consumer have choice and autonomy in how you spend your money when it comes to entertainment products. If you dont like the ports, dont buy them.
If you do buy the ports, then its wasted energy moaning about their existence.
Its completely understandable from a business perspective why the ports were made and Nintendo are under no obligation to provide an upgrade programme. You have your Wii U, use it. Or dont buy the ports. Or buy the ports, enjoy them and get on with your life. Choice
@Scoopz AMEN brother!!!! You have the free will to post you're thoughts online. But, that does not make you free from criticism! Everyone has a different point of view and if you take the time to listen and research their points it just makes your points stronger! Even if you disagree with them!
I hope we get Pikmin 4 next not too long after this
@sixrings
Yeah that’s the ebb and flow. Xbox has been great the past couple of years, but like you say, they’re chasing. The XB1 launch disaster was how what we got when they perceived they were in front. Sony had the same corporate arrogance post-PS2 and Nintendo after the Wii (and post-SNES, and a bit post-NES). Sega had it big time around 1994 and Atari before that. Whereas when they’re chasing they become a lot more pro-Consumer. It’s a weird facet of the Industry.
@Tharsman Wrong. Nintendo has billions in cash reserves and could go decades losing $250MM a quarter....never remotely close to bankruptcy.
@Scoopz I just don't get how someone doesn't want the Switch to have its own proper MK.... It's not all about graphics. They could add new characters from Nintendo franchises.... And Nintendo would be passing on a huge opportunity! It would sell 20 million like that!
@rockodoodle The Switch does have its own Mario Kart. Its called Mario Kart 8 Deluxe which has features and modes the original did not have and runs at a level of fidelity the Wii U couldnt manage. Each Mario Kart brings fidelity and features the previous gen could not handle so each successive game justifies its existence. The Switch is not significantly more powerful than the Wii U, so to avoid a retread/rehash it makes far more sense to have a Mario Kart 9 in 2023, with better graphics, more complex course design and more complex A.I. all enabled by more capable hardware. It makes more business sense as well as another release on Switch in what would be a similar format could risk franchise fatigue which wouldnt be good for Nintendos success or good for us as fans. So before lamenting about Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, appreciate it for what it is and consider the bigger picture. Not just your short term wants.
@Wexter too many thoughts.
@BlueOcean According to GSD, Famitsu and NPD combined data, it’s much less than that.
@sixrings I agree with you 100%. Like you said, it would have been very easy to send digital codes to the people that own the games on Wii U in digital form.
Kind of sad reading some comments here, sound like they are Nintendo's lawyers more than gamers. Dear Nintendo lawyers, don't try to convince consumers with common sense with your stockholders' arguments, you can say your opinion but it isn't any more valid than theirs.
@Dringo Fair enough, I checked vgchartz and I remember reading Nintendo celebrating that it was a million seller.
Another user Dankykong also mentioned it around here:
https://www.nintendolife.com/forums/wii-u/will_pikmin_3_sell_1_million?start=20
@sixrings too little legit points on your front. Come back when you can actually argue something other than "I'm owed this new version because I bought the old one."
There is pro-consumer then there is lack of legitimate idea of how a business runs.
@BlueOcean How do I sound like a lawyer? I brought legit reasons why that is a pipe dream to be demanded your owed something. And the poor business sense it is to giveaway ports. You see no company do it outside of the odd game here and there on Steam. Did you see Microsoft giveaway Halo Anniversary because people bought Combat Evolved? Or Sony give away Last of Us Definitive Edition because people bought the PS3 version? Why should Nintendo?
Just give me a reason that makes sense! Because companies only owe you the end product you bought! If you bought the Wii U version you cannot expect the Switch version for free. The same way if you bought the Xbone version you cannot expect a company to just give you a PS4 version because you bought a PS4 and sold your Xbone.
@electrolite77 I’d gladly take one new game over 5 rehashed ones. And the lack of Mario Kart 9 proves that it’s not just a matter of resources, it also has to do with substitute goods.
@Euler Of course they could have developed Mario Kart 9 but it was easier to port Mario Kart 8 and charge full price for it.
@BlueOcean VGChartz is a bit like Wikipedia. I’m loathe to criticise it, but it’s really not reliable with anything that isn’t in the public domain.
Even if it did break a million, it’s pretty low for a first-party Nintendo game. Nintendo do invest in small franchises if they bring in different audiences, hence their commitment to games like Xenoblade and Metroid. They’re not unsuccessful, but their true value is that they bring in RPG and Metroidvani fans who then go and spend money on other games. I’m not sure Pikmin fits that.
But I also think Pikmin has such potential. It’s not its fault it’s been released on two of Nintendo’s lowest performing consoles. I think a port is fine, but I would love for the series to get a full blown new entry with full marketing support on a platform with a bigger audience. We’ve seen with Luigi’s Mansion what can happen if you do that well. That was a modest seller on GameCube and is now in Nintendo’s Top Ten franchises
@Dringo I agree, Pikmin has much potential. The first game was and is one of my favourite GameCube games. It's because that mix of nature, relaxing sounds, strategy, danger... I also liked the second one and the third one was great but it wasn't that challenging. Pikmin and Wave Race are two of my favourite Nintendo franchises even though Nintendo doesn't care much about them. In my opinion, Nintendo was awesome and brilliant until the Gamecube era but not as good after it.
@Euler
You would but surely you can see why they and anyone else who could shift 24 million copies of MK8D wouldn’t? Money pays for games development. Let’s say they ditch MK8D, NSMBU DX, DKCTF, Captain Toad and Pokken. There’s 35 million plus sales. There’s 5 different franchises represented on the system. And that’s going to have to be one hell of a new game to replace the hours of enjoyment anyone buying those will have had.
And they’re a business. As I said earlier, sooner people get their heads round that, sooner it’ll all make sense.
@Wexter keep up your enthusiasm for Nintendo business decisions when they upres and sell each Mario galaxy and each metroid prime game separate and at full price. Then talk to me about that Halo master chief collection again. Then when they fail you there we can wait and find out if this gens games will be backward compatible on the next switch. Sometimes being pro consumer is good business.
@Scoopz ummmm, mk8d is NOT enough to merit being a separate entity. That would be like Nintendo releasing BOTW again with another mode or two and some DLC and calling it good. Why didn't they just call it MK9? This is the most ridiculous posts I have ever read.
@rockodoodle As far as Nintendos concerned, you know the platform holder, the IP owner MK8Deluxe is Switchs MK entry. Live with it.
Ive explained myself clearly and with good logic previously. Youve brought nothing of merit to the table so we'll leave it there.
@Scoopz only time will tell. By your logic, maybe SSBU should also have been delayed for the next console.
Deal is, Nintendo is going to need some heavy hitters to compete with the new consoles if they want the Switch to last three more years.
@rockodoodle An additional Mario Kart entry for the Switch would be a poor choice to combat the newer platforms as the hardware would not be up to the task of sufficiently distinguishing it from MK8D. It would just feed into the perception that Nintendo has no new ideas and just recycles the same stuff. Which objective gamers know isnt true. A more sensible proposal would be additional DLC to extend the replayability of the current entry. I would hate for a next gen Mario Kart to be delayed because of an additional Switch entry. Thats a horrible idea.
The current version is selling well. Very well. So it would not make business sense to invest in and release another entry on the same platform and cannibalise those sales. Would make far better sense to use a new entry to support the success of a new console. Kind of like the successful MK strategy Nintendos been using for nearly 30 years.
They could add a track editor, bring in new franchises, add team mode.... tons of stuff to do.
@sixrings How is any of what you're saying pro-consumer? You attacked my character when I even stated I only bought one port (Bayonetta 2). I own a Wii U and a copy of the Metroid Prime Trilogy and Mario Galaxy which already play in HD on the Wii U. I'm not in a rush to buy those games. If the Metroid Prime games get a full top-down remake then you know what it would be worth $60 to me. If there just HD upscale at $60 and on Switch I'll wait till a sale. That's the thing is you can vote with your wallet if you don't think something is worth the RSP on the tin. If you already own the game you can decide if the convience of having it on newer hardware is worth it. Clearly, Nintendo is making money off these ports because I believe all of them have outsold what they did on the Wii U by leaps and bounds. So there is clearly a demand "upgrade program" or not. Beyond that, you have not once tackled the technical issues of what I and many others have stated would hold back BC on Switch or even how easy these ports are. Yet you still feel entitled to a steep discount.
I do not feel entitled to any kind of discount for a game I purchased over a decade ago. Or feel that I'm owed anything by a company besides the game I purchased. You have not answered my core question though which is when do you feel you're no longer "entitled for a discount?" How old does a game have to be before you feel you can pay the company for their work porting the game? If you can't answer that then you're not pro-consumer you're an entitled child who just wants free things. I will reiterate I've only purchased one Wii U port for my Switch, and that was Bayonetta 2. So, I don't think I'm a paid shill nor am I the target audience of these ports. Just someone who thinks your argument can use a lot of work and with a different point of view. Because as a programmer I can tell you porting code from one architecture to another is not as easy or cheap as you clearly think it is.
@andykara2003 its not the map itself, its the "go here" function attached to it, as well as the stylus toss, which I found more accurate than the reticle. Pikmin 1 and 2 are not even comparable to 3 due to the inability to multi-task. Hypothetically, you could use Louie to multitask, but seeing as you had manually walk him over to his task, you might as well just use Olimar, and leave the Pikmin that are breaking down a wall to start breaking down another wall with a different group of Pikmin (because that's all you do in the overworlds of 2). It's not that Louie is worthless, it's just that in my experience, his uses were limited, which is not the case in 3.
I am one of the awful people who have never played a Pikmin game still. I will 100% purchase a Pikmin 3 port as a way to jump into the series. Heard great things about it and the series in general.
That aside, this year is looking surprisingly solid. I am currently addicted to Animal Crossing New Horizons and I'm planning on picking up Rescue Team DX soon and Clubhouse Games soon.
Additionally, Paper Mario: The Origami King looks promising... really hoping it ends up feeling like the original two games. And if the rest of the rumors are true... we might also be getting Pikmin 3, a 2D Metroid, and a ton of 3D Mario remakes. That would be a solid year for me!
@thesilverbrick Ahh I misread your comment - absolutely, it’s hard to see how they’ll implement the metroid & Galaxy controls without compromises. Oddly the Wii might end up forever having the superior control methods for these games..
@NintendoArchive yes, it’s going to be interesting to see how Nintendo implements workarounds for these issues..
I remember Emily Rogers said Nintendo would rely on remasters for the first half of 2020 (January to Mid-June), so this makes a lot of sense.
The Mario remasters? That's another thing, however. Even if 3D World launches before or during June, these should come during September.
@Wexter Unfortunately the Galaxy & metroid games don’t run in HD on Wii U - I wish they did! They look rather rough as it’s just upscaled (and anamorphic) 480p. CRT is the only way to make those games look really nice for now. In fact if they can’t work a new control scheme that lives up to the fantastic Wii controls, Wii+CRT might forever be the ultimate way to play those games if you prefer original hardware to emulation..
@andykara2003 I was more using the loose sense of the word HD. Like the games already look rather great just don't have the same spitshine an HD port would get. They still look far clearer on Wii U than running a Wii through an HD TV with RGB or Composite (they look fine with SCART, but that is just not worth the hassle to set up anymore in NA). Like what Twilight Princess HD got on Wii U would but what I want at a minimum for those games. Interesting fact, playing Twilight Princess on the Wii U was actually the first time I enjoyed that game!
I hope they keep the motion controls from Prime Trilogy HD as an option. Because they were so smooth. Or if they added proper twin-stick support at the least. Tried playing Prime 1 on Gamecube a few years ago and the old-school clunky Golden Eye controls were a real turn off after years of twin-stick and IR pointers. Don't have a CRT anymore I just don't have space for it... shame because I love my old retro consoles.
@andykara2003 I definitely agree. I wish there were some form of IR tracking with the JoyCon so we could replicate true Wii remote pointer function accurately.
@rockodoodle All of which could be incorporated more successfully from a business sense to support new hardware.
You have a habit of picking and choosing the points you attempt to counter.
Franchise fatigue that would come with another entry on Switch, unnecessary cannibalisation of extremely good MK8D sales, missed opportunity to support the success of the Switchs successor in a similar way to MK8D has done with Switch and a missed opportunity to present Mario Kart in a level of fidelity and with more complex A.I and track design beyond what Switch is capable of.
You think too short term. I love Nintendo and want their output to continue long into the future so my views and desires take that into consideration and are conducive to that. Learn to look at the bigger picture.
You are not bringing any worthwhile counters.You'll get no further replies.
@Scoopz you crack me up! Is that supposed to ruin my day or something? No replies?
If franchise fatigue is such a concern, then why did they release Super Smash Bros so soon into the Switch's life cycle? How much did it add as an upgrade to the previous edition from the technical standpoint? The same can be said of Zelda, Xenoblade, Pokemon, Mario Tennis, Mario Party, Mario Golf and now Paper Mario.
The flip side to franchise fatigue is missed opportunity. Nintendo could keep eying the future at the expense of a 20MM plus copy seller today. Mario Kart 8 wasn't enough to save the Wii U, why would it be enough to save or successfully launch the next console?
Ugh I was hoping it was a typo in the header. Pikmin 3 was FANTASTIC on the Wii U and it was THE reason to own a Wii U. I just want a Pikmin 4 ALREADY not another re-release!
I hope this didn't delay the development of Pikmin 4, but if this is coming along chances are we won't see Pikmin 4 till 2021 now at the earliest
@BlueOcean I think it’s unfair to suggest they stopped caring about Pikmin. The fact they still make it despite its limited sales suggests the opposite (for the record, I loved both of those GameCube games but I think 2 is the superior one).
Racing games they’ve lost favour with, by the looks of it. They’ve not been able to compete with the rival platforms, sales were low, lack of appetite within the company to do new ones, so they’ve faded away.
But there are a tonne of racing devs out there. Especially in the UK. It would be great if Nintendo decided to invest in its driving games again and expand into that market.
Nintendo has done some incredible work since the GameCube. I mean, the quality run on Switch is sky high
@Dringo I keep playing Nintendo games but Super Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild are bland compared to their predecessors... but we don't have to agree to be friends. It's nice talking to you.
@electrolite77 Mario Kart 9 would've sold over 35 million, plus whatever DLC they could've included.
Of course they're a business. Just because their business decisions may be profitable doesn't mean everyone will like them. And people that see a decision as anti-consumer (full-price deluxe ports, no backwards compatibility even though it would be just a few lines of code, lootboxes) will say so.
@Euler
You don’t know that. You have no idea whether a fictional MK9 would do any better than whatever MK8D finishes on. And that’s one game on the shelves compared to 5, 4 of which will be appealing to different types of user and adding variety to the library.
Just because you would prefer that one new game and everybody else who’s enjoyed the 5 you’ve just removed from the Library can go without doesn’t make them anti-Consumer. By all means call out anti-Consumer practices (they could have done something in terms of offering discounts) but releasing games that lots of people buy isn’t that.
@electrolite77 Yes, rehashing a game that came out less than five years ago and adding enough new content so that you're missing out if you don't buy it but not enough to justify spending $80 on it (again) is anti-consumer. I'm confident Mario Kart 9 would've sold 35 million. For practically every other major franchise, the Switch installment sold better than any other game in the series.
@Euler I couldn't have expressed that better.
This should really be a Pikmin Trilogy remastered.
