Terraria might have started out as a 2D take on Minecraft when it first launched in 2011, but since then it's morphed into its own style of game and has been ported to just about every platform possible including the Nintendo Switch, 3DS, and Wii U.
It looks like all the hard work for Re-Logic and 505 Games has paid off over the years, as the game has now sold more than 30 million copies across all platforms. A developer from Re-Logic even provided a breakdown of sales, revealing the console version had shifted 7.6 million copies (unfortunately it didn't share individual console stats). Here's the full breakdown:
- 14 Million sold on PC
- 7.6 Million sold on Consoles
- 8.7 Million sold on Mobile devices
To say that this floors all of us in regards to the sheer level of support and love you have shown us over the years is a massive understatement. We can only hope to return the favor by continuing to provide amazing gaming experiences for years to come (whether it be on Terraria or future games that we create).
The next update on the way is Journey's End. Are you one of the 30 million people who have bought Terraria? Are you still playing it on a regular basis? Leave a comment down below.

It really has has, huh? š
No
And i have zero interest in buying and playing it or Minecrack.
Neither appeal to me.
This a good April Fools, no way that many people would make such a mistake.
I have it on Wii U, physical copy.
Own it on PC and the Switch
Iāve got this on 3DS, but havenāt put much time in. Been debating on Switch version. 30m copies sold doesnāt surprise me though.... I mean last I saw Minecraft had what, 150m worldwide? 30m is only a 1/5 of those numbers, and Iām sure the sprite graphics, and Minecraft similarity had to pull some MC players in....
8.7 million on mobile surprised me a lot.
@Dm9982 I can't speak on the Switch version, but in general I've found the console versions (Xbox One, Xbox 360) to be more difficult than the PC version due to the less accurate aim since you're using a controller. I never tried defeating the wall just because of sheer difficulty in aiming. I'm fairly confident the Switch version handles the same as other consoles, though they might have added touch controls for handheld play (helpful while building in the mobile version). The music is a huge improvement since the console versions use remixed/reorchestrated versions of the PC songs... This is one area that is far superior to the PC release.
I'm pretty sure this game has been released on basically every electronic device released in the last 10 years. So I can't say I am surprised.
It's always been on my radar, but I've never gotten around to playing it.
For anybody wondering about the 2 "Has" in the title, I'm guessing Liam wrote it with 1 "Has" but Nintendo Life said -
Hmm, is that it? Can you think of someting more to say?
when he tried to post it so he added the 2nd "Has" to make it long enough. š¤£
Why it's spelled "someting" I have no idea.
I've played the game; I'd say it's worth worth a try.
Terraria is pretty fun. Definitely prefer it over Minecraft if I have to pick between the two.
Great game. I have it on multiple platforms, and it used to be my all time favorite game.
I put many, many hours into the 3DS version (150 hours), many hours into the PC version, and put a decent amount of time into the PS3 version. I also played the mobile version, and got decently far into it before giving up due to the horrible controls. Same with the PS4 version, since the controls just don't feel right.
I'm actually playing the VITA version right now. So far, it's a good port once you get use to the controls. In general, I recommend checking it out if you like games like Minecraft and want stronger focus on progression. Game's filled with content and stuff to find out.
@Wilforce Yeah I had a bit of difficulty aiming on 3DS, but I faulted a crappy stylus more so than the game, lol. Still think Iāll get this on sale some time though, because I did like what I played on 3DS, just thought it needed more screen than the 3DS had... plus it seems like a much bigger beast than what launched on 3DS - likely due to a ton of updates / patches.
@rjejr I kinda miss the days people would accuse you of purposely spelling nintnedo wrong... š Hope youāre all safe and well.
I have it on Switch and I will find it on 3DS. It is a fantastic game. Just like Minecraft.
Iāve played and finished this game over 8 times.Never gets old for me.Anyone on PC should try the calamity mod if the y want more content
That's one hellish accomplishment!
Edit: Sorry, I thought it was a Doom related article
@AmplifyMJ Thanks, we're still good, hanging in there.
I reread a few articles from summer 2017 this morning, and while none of those asked about my mistyping of Nintendo I have to say it felt like I knew everybody here and everybody was in a much better mood. Though they were all Zelda BotW articles, so that might have helped. But overall, even just 3 years ago the tone was much different. Guess that's what a new console launch and new game news does for gamers.
Take care over there.
@rjejr thank you Sir! Iām only working one day a week at the minute so other than that Iām school teacher! It aināt easy š
I'm pretty sure terraria was released before Minecraft, so it didn't actually copy it.
I was looking for similiar gaming experience as in Steam World Dig 2 and this game came to my mind. Unfortunately it wasn't my cup of tea. The progress is way too slow. Even in a small world.
It's on SELL right now on STEAM for $4.99.
No info on the multiplayer update for Switch?
@AmplifyMJ You got that right. Crazy times.
Last year it sold 3 billion copies...
@RedBlueCarrots i agree. On the play store it only says 1 million so most people must have bought it in i phone. In most cases thou a lot of people don't pay upfront for mobile games. Tarreia is one of the exceptions alongside minecraft & GTA games. Even games that sold millions on console like soul calibur and final fantasy don't sell that much on mobile ports as far as i know.
