If you're old enough to recall the crushing disappointment that was Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace then you'll no doubt recall the highlight of that particular film – the excellent podracing sequence.
That section was turned into not one but two different video games. Sega produced an amazing arcade version, while LucasArts itself created a different version – Star Wars Episode I: Racer – that released on the N64, Dreamcast and PC.
During the Nintendo Direct Mini, it was revealed the console version would be making a comeback on Nintendo Switch. The same version of the game was recently released on Steam and GOG, but the official Star Wars blog also mentions the Switch release will include split-screen multiplayer and LAN multiplayer. Here are the other features you can look forward to and some screenshots:
- 25 playable racers including: Anakin Skywalker, Sebulba, and Ratts Tyerell
- Race tracks spanning 8 unique worlds including: Tatooine, Baroonda, and Malastare
- Work with pit droids to upgrade your podracer for higher top speeds and acceleration
- Discover short-cuts and secrets to master your lap times

I remember seeing footage of the N64 version and it looking hilarious, if it's cheap enough I might get it as a joke.
This is one of my favourite games ever! I’m hoping it’ll be the PC version.
Great, never picked this up.
I'll be there day one. Assuming things are still good for me.
Cool, hopefully Rogue Squadron, Star Wars Arcades follow
Already got the PC and Dc version.
But I wil probably end up getting this too
Here is hoping for Kotor 1 and 2.
Oh man, this was a great game.
What a fantastic little Direct.
@Expa0 You've clearly never played it then. It was a brilliant game with loads of customisation that worked as a kind of progression system as the races got extremely difficult. Cannot wait to revisit this.
I sucked at the game but I played it so much, I might pick it up if enough polish is added.
Never played these games, bring it on!
I find this a weird choice but I guess it was popular and people liked it?
Woah, this is a great game, colour me excited.
Loved this on N64, great game
I used to love the PC version.. I hope the Switch version lives up to the memory.
WHAT?!?! OMG yes!!
insert more words here because NintendoLife sucks
I rented that game so many times it was so fun! I literally tweeted the other day bring back pod racing so this was a cool announcement. Bring back Rogue Squadron next and maybe even Shadows of the Empire!?
Pretty Wizard!
Now THIS is podracing!
this game was the nuts. weird decision to remake/rerelease it tho
Amazing. Don’t hate on that first movie though...... Can’t wait. My wallet hurts but it wants more Star Wars games now
Best bit of the movie? Please tell me that was sarcasm, I mean I love the game and can't wait but wow, just ignoring the best lightsaber duel in the franchise?
@KingBowser86 HAHAHAHAHA YES IT IS
I was just playing this on N64 the other day and thinking how much I’d love a remake. Go figure. Hopefully it’s updated and redone, not just ported.
@bluemujika
And the music is so epic they produced a music video that ran on MTV.
OMG OMG OMG i still remeber the electric sound of pod engines ! great great great game !
One of my favourite N64 games! The sound effects are so nostalgic. The shortcuts were awesome, I used to know all of them but it'll take me a while to find them again I think....
By the way it's just a port not a remake as far as I know?
I still play this on my Dreamcast now and again, definitely going to buy this.
Port star wars battlefront 2! I don't care which one, both are great games! The original might be better but the 2016 one really managed to salvage itself into a really great game
Had a lot of fun with this game on the Nintendo 64 at friends, but at home it was on my iMac. I had a PSOne.
Now this is pod racing !
This is what I thought Limited Run was on about when they announced their's but it was just a re-issue.
But a re-make? Yes please!, also please have the choice of tank style controls (using the two analogue sticks) without having to put in the cheat.
@AxeltheBuizel Thats my main to go game on the xbox, been playing is noon stop since release, really a good game and still getting lots of updates, would love if they brought to switch, couldnt imagine playing it handheld.
I broke this one out about a year ago on N64 as I wanted to share it with my kids. The graphics are horrendous. I remember enjoying it, but it was a bit shallow. I'm excited to see it remade. Hopefully it will look much better and have more depth. Good announcement.
Awsome! hopefully we get the old battlefront games to
Had this on the PC and it was fantastic. This is a day one buy.
Never owned a N64 myself but played this on a flatmate's. Love Star Wars, love podracing.
This is fantastic news and will be an insta-buy I reckon.
Annoying child in the film: Now THIS is podracing!
It wasn’t clear if this was a remake or a like... HD up scaling or something. I took it as a remaster, not a “remake.”
Either way though, I’m gonna be happy when it releases!
I wasn’t disappointed with SW1...except for the...limited use of Maul. The pod racing scene is also my least favorite when re-watching the film-though upon first viewing was probably one of my favorite parts!
But we’re not here to talk films...this is probably my favorite SW video game and am so glad it’s being redone! Day 1 for me! I loved the N64 system bundle with this game-that box was awesome!
Still have the original for 64 and the box for some reason lmao.
Instant purchase! This game is awesome helps fill the void of not have a new F-zero
So nice! Can't wait for this one.
This and burnout were the highlights of the direct for me. Can’t wait to play this. Rogue squadron trilogy collection would awesome too.
I loved this game so much as a kid. When they started rereleasing Star Wars games this was one of the games at the top of my wish list. Now we need some Rogue Squadron next!
Wow! I'm pumped for this! That game was awesome. I have done memories of playing this with my brother.
Great game. Now, say what you want about how awful the prequel trilogy films were, they added some really nice lore and world building that made for some great video games. Disney have no idea what they are on for.
I absolutely loved the N64 version so I'm pumped
FINALLY!!! I've been wanting to play this game again for so long. And them remaking it rather than just porting it is just icing on the cake. This was easily one of my favorites on N64, right up there with Perfect Dark and Mario Kart 64.
But, while the podracing sequence was the most technologically impressive sequence in the film, it certainly wasn't the best part of the film. That's just wrong.
@Damo It's a remaster, ala Resident Evil HD, not a remake ala Resident Evil 2 remake. That's just misleading to state that in the title, and I expect better from someone in your position.
i LOVE this game, i still have the N64 Original but if i can get not only a remastered version but a version i can play on the go then i'm there day one
@bluemujika are you saying that the duel on Mustafar is not the best duel in the franchise. Not saying that the duel from the end of the phantom menace isn’t great but duel on mustafar is by far the best in the franchise. I have spoken.
I really enjoyed it for being a pure racing game. No weapons needed.
And it was one of the best parts of the movie!
Hey I remember this as a kid. I didn't like starwars enough to ask for it to own but I did rent it a few times. I'll pick this up. I wonder what is up with the revivals of the starwars games?
Got both games on Dreamcast and N64 a while back and was amaze, only minor disappointment was that there was no 4-players split screen action so only two could go at a time otherwise it was a fun game and I'm glad it's coming back for Switch in HD.
"If you're old enough to recall the crushing disappointment that was Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace"
Personally, I was never disappointed (I'm more than old enough). And it's still better than three of the last five Disney films.
I’m sick to death of Star Wars!
Podracer on the N64 was so good! I first played it well after release (during the Wii's lifecycle irr) so there wasn't nostalgia there either, it was just a really solid game. Definitely keeping an eye on this.
MY CHILDHOOD!!!! The very first game I've ever owned
Wait, remake or HD remaster? If it's a remake, it will be interesting to see...
This game was about the only redeemable thing from Episode 1. It was a blast on PC. I remember playing on my cousin's N64 and thinking it wasn't even the same game. The recent steam release is almost unplayable with lousy gamepad support. If this gets a true remake or even a remaster with Switch Pro controller support, I'm in for a third purchase.
This was the 1 thing that genuinely made me gasp out loud in excitement. Hoping for full online and a remaster would be awesome. Someone has done a bit of a remake in UE4 and it looks brilliant https://youtu.be/TfgC89vX0hA
Dang. I just traded for the original last week. Now that's obsolete...
Also, author clearly forgot about Maul.
@Expa0 the N64 game is quite good. It's a ridiculous and fun racing game. I hope they take the time to expand on it and make more tracks and do voice work and whatever else they can figure out to do.
I bought this game twice for the N64 and loved it so much. The music and sound effects were glorious and I loved customizing my pod and wiping the floor with Sebulba on his home planet of Malastare.
This was an amazing racer on the N64. I remember borrowing it from a friend for a weekend, enjoying it so much that I picked it up myself the next...
LOVE, LOVE, LOVED this game — one of my absolute favorite racers.
This from someone who denies the existence of anything other than the Original Trilogy.
Game was so good it didn't matter. Mars Guo rides again....
Can't wait to play this one again! It has been so long since I have feasted my eyes on it! And remastered too? Big bonus. Also, there are plenty of great moments in that movie.
Great stuff loved this on the N64
YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope GameLoft is doing it after their INCREDIBLE work on Asphalt 9
I played the heck out of the arcade version and N64 port back in the day, and I wasn't a Star Wars fan. They were just great games. I'm definitely picking this up.
@Gerald
Oooooh if roque squadron happens, they can have my wallet.
@Bubboi In my opinion it is likely the 2nd best, the choreography of the episode 1's duel however is simply amazing and a good lesson in film making in how to use an action sequence to not only drive a plot forward, but also to develop and describe your characters. Simply amazing.
I used to love this on the N64. I’ll have to pick this up when it drops
@expa0 Ignorant statement and you're missing out if you don't take the game seriously. Extremely well-designed tracks and deep progression/customization systems, as well as a respectable amount of tracks to race on, given it was made well before the DLC era. The difficulty is heavily skill-based, along with how you build your podracer in relation to the track you're on.
An easy 9.5/10.
This is probably one of my all time favorite hover racers. I always enjoyed this game far more than games like F-Zero and Fast RMX.
Most definitely getting this!
I honestly loved this film. And also love this game so I’m excited. I’ve still got it for my 64 and I actually played it recently 😁
That's a funny coincidence. Before reading this I just came from picking up the Japanese N64 version of this game (needed a NTSC game to test my new N64 on a HDTV).
Have you seen my chance cube?
This is a fantastic game that deserves to be revisited or discovered for the first time.
Owned the N64 Original. Fantastic game with one of the greatest senses of speed in ANY racer.
Still got my original copy for the N64 and it was really on par with games like wipeout 64 and f-zero x. The N64 probably had the best diverse collection of racers, even though the PSone had more the overall quality was hard to match, probably spent most of my days doing time trails on most of them. I expect this will be based on the PC release much like all remastered games these days as they are the easiest to convert to modern tech.
I will have to say though being more than old enough to have been around when episode 1 came out, I was never disappointed. Although, I never build things up so much in my head they fail to reach unrealistic expectations. Around that time is when rabid online communities started for to get angry with things that don't meet their standards and have continued to this day.
Honestly...unexpected and awesome.
@Xiovanni Shame, only local multiplayer too.
Awesome! I'm not into Star Wars but I liked that game on the N64.
Does anyone remember this got a sequel on PS2, Star Wars Racer: Revenge? Was also pretty good, and you could use the dual analog sticks to control each engine individually. Worked a little better than holding two N64 controllers
"If you're old enough to recall the crushing disappointment that was Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace"
Screw that! I LIKE the prequels!
If you want disappointment, you're talking about EVERYTHING STAR WARS since Disney bought the IP!
Love this game, highlight of the movie was the Darth Maul battle by a county mile tho🙌
Confirmed. We're never getting an N64 virtual console replacement.
I played it on pc with two voodoo 2 cards, 3D accelerated and I don’t remember it being so pixelated... I hope they smooth out the graphics. I can’t wait to play it again but the graphics though....
@Heavyarms55 Everything except Rogue One. Much better than all the prequels, sequels and Solo.
@ilh The only thing I will give you for Rogue One was the space battle and the Darth Vader scene. I hate the story completely, but those action scenes were undeniably awesome.
The movie was great, totally underated. We were lucky there was no twitter back then, cause we saved ourselfes of the brainwashing
I remember playing this in N64! I’ll be interested to see how this “remake “ goes! I wonder if this is going to be an exclusive?
Wrong, the best bit of the film was "duel of the fates" and the lightsaber fight with Darth Maul. By far
If only Shin'en Multimedia could somehow make a sequel/remake
@Heavyarms55
that Darth Vader scene was unbelievable. Second best scene of the movie was Imwe's introductory fight.
I remember playing this on GBC
Really? Calling the phantom menace a disappointment after this Disney trilogy? And calling the podracing the best part of the film? Did you not see the maul duel?
@ilh rogue one was awful. That's why they had to throw Vader in at the end. So they could have him in the trailer and make people want to see it.
@thesilverbrick Wouldn't get your hopes up as it looks exactly like the PC version which was just an N64 port with better audio.
@dudujencarelli
That's sadly true the best Disney star Wars is Rogue One.
@AxeltheBuizel
I'd honestly rather see the 2004 original personally.
@Purgatorium
That and that it is actually a good game.
If those are the definitive screenshots it looks more like a port than a remake? Blocky blocks...
Sega did the arcade version, looked better in my memory.
I think the PC version had 3dfx support. Looked better than this, so does the Dreamcast version.
I hope they fix the 'rubber banding' on this, nothing worse than being overtaken and then they fly off into the distance never to be seen again 😂😂😂
What's with the unfiltered textures in those screenshots? Is this a port of the PS1 version?
@bluemujika It is a Star Wars movie after all, you're lucky people can find a single good scene in any of the movies. The Pod racing sequence was the only one that didn't put me to sleep.
Episode 1 was still better than any of the Disney trilogy. Back on topic can't wait for this one!
@SpookyPotato I agree about episode 1. I actually enjoyed the whole prequel trilogy , 2 in particular which seems to be the most popular one to bash at the moment, but I thought it was epic! Played this on n64 great game but found it quite hard but yeah will be getting this x x x x x x
And still better than the average Disney movie (be it a Marvel children's movie or a princess/animal remake)
@Dragonslacker1 I know right! For episode 1 had the best lightsaber duel out of well... All of them. And yeah episode 2 was pretty epic. Episode 3 was kinda all over the place but not nearly as bad episode 9...
Why no aliasing in this remake?!
@RandomNerds Definitely not. That is why I was telling people to take advantage of the virtual console back when the Wii store was still active on the Wii U. I had a feeling that it was the end of an era.
rather have them bring bombat racer to switch.
@JayJ I have fully. The Wii U in my opinion is the best console to have on hand because it's also a Wii and both have great Virtual Console options.
@RandomNerds Yeah I think it was totally underrated in that regard.
Awesome, but no date it sounds like it?
"If you're old enough to recall the crushing disappointment that was Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace".
Yes, they were horrible films, but...
"the highlight of that particular film – the excellent podracing sequence."
This was actually the worst part of the first film, which overall I think is less awful because it doesn't have the bad Anakin actor.
@Ryu_Niiyama
My guess is "The tragedy of Solo at the box office" completely bombing. (Which then Disney did their "re-thinking" of their Star Wars strategy). Then, around this time last year, Disney started hiring people under the Lucasflim Games banner, but Disney later said it wasn't a revival of Lucasflim Games.
I'm guessing that's when they started hiring people to find a developer to re-release the older SW games.
Here's a link to what I mean:
https://www.engadget.com/2019-03-20-disney-revives-lucasfilm-games.html
@PorllM a n64 game on switch... yeah...
@reporterdavid not sure what you’re saying here I had the original so I’m well aware of the systems. My comment was correcting the original post which called it a remake. My comment was also from March 2020, a little sociopathic to reply to it now
@PorllM yeah i just noticed the game through a sale on the eshop. I like it that for all the consoles (not all handhelds) there is at least one switch game available. Nes, Snes, N64 (Super Mario 64, Turok) , Cube (Sunshine / Star Wars) , Wii (Vacation Club) , WiiU (Mario Kart 8 Deluxe... etc.) and even 3DS (Miitopia) which is more a handheld. but I just searched for some information.
