Update: We've been contacted by Psyonix with an amendment to the information reported below. In relation to the contents of the Golden Lanterns, an Editor's Note on the Rocket League blog reads as follows:
A previous draft of the blog incorrectly stated that Golden Lanterns contain items from Champions Series 1, 2, and 3. Golden Lanterns contain items from Impact, Overdrive, and Victory Series.
So, to repeat - the items contained in Golden Lanterns come from the Impact, Overdrive and Victory Series, not the Champions Series.
Original Story:
Now that Christmas is behind us, a number of community-driven games are beginning to focus on Lunar New Year events. One of these games is Rocket League, by Psyonix.
To celebrate the Lunar New Year, there'll be an in-game event starting in Rocket League on 20th January. This will include the chance to score special-themed items from the Event Store, unlock unique items in the Item Shop and try out the brand new arena, The Forbidden Temple.
Here's a bit more about the event from the game's website:
Start 2020 in style with in-game items inspired by the Lantern Festival. Play Online Matches to earn Red Envelopes, which can then be redeemed for items like the Paper Dragon Topper and the Fortune Wheels. You can also use Red Envelopes to unlock Golden Lanterns, which contain items from Champions Series 1, 2, and 3! Plus, be sure to stop by the Item Shop throughout Lucky Lanterns to check out some new themed items to get you festival-ready, and get a free item just for logging in!
And below are the key dates for Lucky Lanterns:
- Lucky Lanterns begins: January 20, 2020 10 a.m. PST (6:00 p.m. UTC)
- Lucky Lanterns ends: February 10, 2020 at 10 a.m. PST (6:00 p.m. UTC)
- Redeem Red Envelopes by: February 13, 2020 at 10:00 a.m.PST (6:00 p.m. UTC)
Will you be participating in this upcoming event? Tell us below.

Looks like another great Rocket League event! They sure know how to bring people back into their game. 🤩
I want that Venom body with the Octane-esque spoiler (yellow car w/ flames above)EDIT: ha, that's the regular venom body I didn't know the spoiler raised at speed.
EDIT: to answer Liam's question, I've been training most days for for about 30min before I play. Some days more, to focus an a new skill, aerials, and goal defense. I'm new at using aerials.
Are these "Red envelopes" just a reskin of Blueprints? I don't understand.
@Woomy_NNYes If past events are any indication, the envelopes will be a special currency you earn after each online match. During the recent Christmas-themed special event, about 10-15 "snowflakes" would drop after every game: I'd wager we'll get the same drop rates for this doodad too.
You can accumulate the currency to exchange for cosmetic items themed after the event. At about 150 we can make an exchange for one aforementioned Golden Lantern, which is essentially a mystery loot crate we can get up to 5 of and can open for free.
@mlj11 OHhhh, riight. I forgot about the snowflakes already. Thanks @mlj11 !
To answer Liam's question: absolutely! The winter fest was a fun addition to the game. I would play with out the free cosmetic swag, but it is a cool bonus to get it.
Rocket League is in my top three games: BotW, AC and RL.
@Woomy_NNYes That is a lot of training! I just jump in and play. Do you play casual, competitive or extra modes?
I’m annoyed that they never addressed input lag on Switch. Speculation is that forced v-sync is partially to blame. But Psyonix won’t even acknowledge it.
I’m Champ on PC, and can barely teach platinum on switch because of the input lag. It bad on console screen. And wise on tv mode
Hey there , @dugan . If i dont train & warm up first to adjust to that fish-eye effect view, I miss more often. I've played ranked 1v1 to work on my game, then ranked 3v3, got bronze in both. I had some games in silver rank 3v3, but got knocked back down - all on my own merrit I do what i can to "git guud", rotate, shadow. I'm decent at passing to make goals, decent defense?, but aiming hits is still a known weakness of mine.
I play casual too: 3v3, 1v1.
Snowday i was platinum, but got knocked down.
So my skill isn't anything to brag about, but I'm actively looking to to improve skill, strategy. I think improving skill & taking it to matches fun.
@Woomy_NNYes That is so cool! I am glad there is another big RL fan on this site. And it does sound like you do have some skills, friend. I don't want to see you on the opposing team!
@dugan that's nice of you to say...but i think Bronze in ranked, I think you just need a pulse and to complete 10 or more matches and you can get bronze i think that's how it works
@Woomy_NNYes Okay, last comment and I will stop. Yes, I start out at Bronze, but then I get demoted pretty quickly. Whereas you have advanced. I know you are not bragging, but you are at least better than me!
@dugan i just assumed most people are better than me. 200hrs, and bronze ranked. Im usually not the strongest player on a 3v3 ranked team, regularly getting dunked on by other players that can flick the ball over me at the last second.
I mostly play casual games, and since the pool of switch RL players isn't that big, I'm wondering what your switch user name is, so I can keep an eye out for you..... Also, so I know who to "demo" I'm kidding, I try not to crash into other players, out of respect. What's your switch username? Mine is usually "Anderiah".
@Woomy_NNYes I don't think I have seen "Anderiah" but I will keep an eye out. My username is "dugan" with a K.K. Slider picture. I have about 180 hours in the game. In competitive I am not so good, but about half the time in casual I am the leading scorer on my team. I love the randomness of casual 3v3: your teammates may be great, or not; your opponents may be great, or not. But I do love the intensity of competitive 3v3: There is less demo and more strategy. Like you, I am not the best, but I like when I see a really good player: watching them pull off amazing aerial shots with seeming ease. And it's even better when they're on my team.
I will keep an eye out for you!
