A year ago, Game Atelier and FDG Entertainment released Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom on the Nintendo Switch and multiple other platforms.
Now, to celebrate the game's one-year anniversary, FDG is putting the title on sale for half-price. This offer will be available on the Switch later this week, on 4th December, and is a worldwide deal. The usual price is $39.99 / £34.99.
If you're wondering what all the fuss is about, check out the Nintendo Life review. We gave the game nine out of ten stars and said it was a tremendous accomplishment and a worthy spiritual successor to the Wonder Boy series.
Will you be taking up this half-price offer? Comment below.

I should go ahead and get it. I always wanted to get it, but kinda forgot about it with other games I wanted to play. But 50% off, why not.
I bought blaster master 02. Probably one of the best platformers listed on eShop right now
I heard this was good but I wasn't crazy about wonder boy and the dragons trap. I also tried it a couple years ago so maybe ill give it another shot and if i like it, I'll grab this.
Damm pitty its not 60% off... may of bought it then
Too bad they didn't do it with all the other sales. I budgeted for Black Friday games and didn't plan on spending any more on games till next year, and can't really justify splurging since I still gotta get gifts for everyone else.
@NintendoByNature this is way way better than dragon trap
Been on sale a few times but nowhere near this much discount. Probably time to finally check it out...
started at such a high price though for what it is, will wait until it's around £10
I'm pretty sure this game has a demo, so if anyone is on the fence, definitely try that first.
Cheapest eShop country Norway (320 NOK). At current exchange rate 160 NOK = 13.49 GBP ☺
The demo did not make me want to play the game
@KnightsTemplar
Me neither, but then I bought a month ago and loved it! Great Metroidesque game!
Over priced at release. Maybe if it was a physical game at that price the price would have been justified because of the resale value.
I've waited a year, and now there are other games that take priority. I'll wait awhile longer and like other forgotten games it will appear for a tenner one week in another sale.
Games like this one are marketed badly.
@Wilforce i always make sure to also budget for the surprise game awards sales and for the Christmas sale they do each year.
@Wilforce There's currently a prize draw on Twitter @FDG_Games where you can win a signed copy, good luck!
@NintendoPete Thank you for playing! Yeah it's difficult to do a Metroidvania demo without spoiling late game, some may get the impression it's platformer only. We decided to put out a demo anyway so players can check the tech and playability.
@zool OMG! I don't like your comment but can't help to still love y'all. we're very grateful for many Nintendo fans who supported this game despite the high price! It's justified though, as its a long game with a lot of variety.
@KnightsTemplar Oh - sorry we failed you :/
@NinChocolate Great purchase! I loved Blaster Master Zero 2 a lot!
@Murbs We hope to see you in Monster World soon! ^_^
@shonenjump86 Welcome to Monster World Kingdom!
I played the demo last week and liked it but didn't want to spend $40 on the game. Now I will get it at half off.
@Joe-b Happy to hear that! Welcome aboard
@NintendoByNature Hope to see you in Monster World Kingdom soon! ^_^
Hm, kinda feel like 20 bucks is the price it should have been in the first place.
@Fazermint Time to check it out then!
Imagine, if Kratos' boooi was Monster Boooi.
@Future777 thanks! Can't wait!
@Future777
Hope we will get a sequel - I bought the game immediately after playing Wondboy in Monster World and Monster World 4 on the Genesis/Mega Drive mini. Really loved all the allusions to the prequels in Monster Boy.
Btw: don't think the price been too high. It's not inferior to a Metroid game which is usually full priced. Nes games in the 80s weren't cheaper either and they didn't last as long. Don't know why people are not willing to pay for games anymore. I gladly pay fully price for games that I want.
@NintendoPete Thank you very much! <3
This is an amazing game, and I don't agree that it wasn't worth the original asking price. A playthrough takes 20-25 hours, which is quite long for a Metroidvania, and there is more variety than almost every other game in this genre. 50% off is a bargain. I really hope there is a sequel.
Didn't buy this previously as Super Mario Odyssey didn't cost much more at the time so obviously I purchased that instead.
However, definitely will be getting this in the sale, it had slipped off my radar.
It's a great game, totally worth its full price. For those who are into platformers with a plus (a ton of them), just buy it. It's really cheap for what it offers with the 50% discount
My only question about the game was why was the Pig the Wizard of the game lol. It's super quirky and I love it, but the only animal to get magic is the pirate pig haha!
@Future777 I don't know how games are priced. I do know Nintendo over price their own downloads and very rarely reduce them, but for the most part gamers know what they are getting from a Nintendo game.
Downloading a game costing £35 plus is not like downloading an ebook for £5. It can be a gamble if it does not offer a demo version.
Yooka Laylee is a long game and that had a physical release at £25.
I guess some companies will price high in the hope of making an early profit from fewer sales. While others will make the price more attractive for a larger sales volume and a potentially higher profit.
Had this on my Christmas wishlist for the physicsl copy, so I don't think I'll bite yet just in case - but I found the demo a lot of fun and I've heard lots of high praise for the game, so it's high on my list.
@PikaPhantom Don't wait too long for the physical copy because we already delivered our last print to retail, it will sell out.
@Future777 In that case, I'll try and bite as soon as I can if I don't get it for Christmas (still a teenager, heh) - hopefully it lasts until then! Thanks for the response - I appreciate the transparency.
I just so happen to have a $20 credit that Ive been trying to decide how to spend. I think I'm going to use it for this.
Yesss! Will get it!
This was my first metroidvania ever... and it was amazing! Even outside the fact that it's a Metroidvania, this game is just awesome to play. I 100% the whole thing because it was that good. If you're on the fence about getting this game, it is a MUST OWN. The characters and the story is just sooo good!
@Future777 oh, well thanks. I will be getting this.
Best Metroidvania on the Switch imo!
Okay 2nd best after Hollow Knight.
I do love the fact that the developer is in the comments section as part of the conversation. Feels cozy.
Ah, heck. I’ve been on the fence for ages—I’ll buy it too!
@Future777 I know you don't have anything to do with Sega and the Genesis Classics on Switch, but I'm wondering if you have any insight regarding the trademarks for Wonder Boy? I heard there were legal issues which is why Sega quietly pulled both Wonder Boy games from the Switch version. And does that have anything to do with why your game is called Monster Boy and not Wonder Boy?
Was this game released physical in Europe (with PEGI on box), or just in North America?
@Future777
I Bought Cursed Kingdom the day it was released and after playing it through I knew that it was worth much more than the $40 I paid for it. Sure, there were some minor things I didn’t like. Overall, the team nailed it and it’s ultimately the best Wonder Boy game by a large margin. Thank you for the enjoyment I got out of it.
Get it. I absolutely loved it, and 100% it in less than a week. Physical is even better, with its reverse artwork, huge full color manual and stickers.
@PikaPhantom You're very welcome!
@cherryghost41 Thank you very much for supporting us with your purchase. Big thanks also to everybody else who visits us in Monster World Kingdom!
@TDRsuperstar2 Wow, So happy to hear it was your first Metroidvania and you enjoyed it so much! cheers!
@RobotReptile Feels also cozy to chat with the community! Thank you for your support! ^_^
@robr Thank you so much! <3
@VR32X Thank you very much and congratulations on 100%!!
@Sinton The physical release was USA only.
@Panopticon It's a complicated matter but I don't know why Monster World wasn't included in Genesis classics on Switch. As for Monster Boy vs. Wonder Boy: The 'Wonder Boy' trademark is indeed complicated to obtain nowadays because Sega initially didn't extend the worldwide registration and a Korean company was also involved. We chose to reduce the risk by picking a different name and we liked it anyway. Still, Monster Boy is content-wise an official sequel to the Monster World series of games.
@Future777 That’s too bad, but thanks for the info! Guess I’ll buy it on the eShop now, then.
Halve it again we gold.
@Future777 any plans for a sequel? 😁
@TDRsuperstar2 The dev team is currently working on a different game but I wouldn't rule out a sequel in the more distant future. ^^
@Future777 Thank you for the quick response!
December 4th, already. When does the sale go on? Or does it translate to this Thursday in America?
@Future777 Thank you so much for your hard work. I can't wait to play the game. I've put it off for too long but, I'm very excited to finally dive in. I've been looking forward to it.
@YoshiAngemon Dec.4: EU; Dec.5: USA/JAPAN
@Future777 Thank you. Good thing I bought an eShop Card so my MoneyCard will only deduct the sales tax from it.
It is already $14 on Steam and $19.99 on PSN in the US. But still $39.99 on the eShop
@Agramonte The sale will start in around 6-7 hours on eShop USA. cheers!
@Future777 yeah, just saw it!... Thanks!
I really wanted to love this game. I waited patiently for years for it to get released. But there is alot of small things that bother me immensely, like poorly made boss fights with clunky controls and poorly executed swap of form or spells which is not as intuitive and polished as it should have been (why not continously tap ZR /ZL to cycle through them without having to go into options?! Dragons trap is far superior in my book.
@TheKillerTofu With the Ring Option Menu disabled, you can do exactly just that. Holding the buttons allow you to bring up the menu. It's quite intuitive.
Just got it along with The Touryst. Debated between getting those two and the new Assassin's Creed Doublepack for the Switch, but I beat Black Flag and Rogue already and would rather support these two fine indie devs.
@Realy_Till Thank you for taking the time to clarify while I've been away during the week-end! <3
@gaby_gabito Thanks a lot for supporting us with your purchase! <3
I downloaded it, its great. It also has great puzzles, something I didn't expect. Gives the game some extra meat!
