Back in February, Reggie Fils-Aimé announced that he would be stepping down from his role as Nintendo of America President on 15th April. Time has raced by since then, as it so often does, and we've now reached that very day.
The first time we, as Nintendo fans, saw Reggie walk out onto the stage was during E3 2004. “My name is Reggie. I'm about kickin' ass, I'm about takin' names, and we're about makin' games", he said, instantly winning over a good number of excited fans who were eager to learn what was coming next from Nintendo. Who could forget an introduction like that?
We won't gush about what Reggie has done for Nintendo and for its fans too much here - we've already spoken about what he meant to Nintendo, the industry and more, and even shared a selection of his greatest moments on camera - but it's safe to say that he's become almost synonymous with the company over the last 15 years and it's sad to see him go.
Now, we move on to a new era with Doug Bowser at the helm. Aside from having perhaps the most perfect name possible for the role, Bowser has been shadowing Reggie since joining Nintendo in 2015 and seems like a natural fit for the job. It'll be interesting to see how - and if - things feel any different going forward, and how Bowser attempts to fill Reggie's much-adored shoes.
Update: He's also just opened his very own Twitter account. Make sure to go and give him a follow!
Are you sad to see Reggie go? Looking forward to a new era? Feel free to share your thoughts and any well wishes in the comments below.

Good luck Reggie
Sooooo.... There should be a last minute announcement any minute now for Reggie's farewell Direct, right?
Now he just needs animal crossing switch and he can enjoy his retirement
No body (pun intended) is ready for this.
Reggie was one of the many characters that made Nintendo the special company it is. He will be missed.
All the best Reggie!
Goodbye, Reggie
We know you're gone, you said you're gone
But we can still feel you here
It's not the end
Gotta keep it strong
Before the pain turns into fear
So glad we knew you
Time will never change it, no no no
No no no no
Just like Miyamoto and Iwata, Reggie exudes fun, kindness and inclusiveness which I hope Bowser will also bring to the table. When he's not trying to force-marry Peach that is.
He will still pop up every now and then I'm sure, no one really leaves the gaming community.
But never really liked him (this is my own opinion and not trolling)
I'll say bon voyage Reggie. Retirement is a dirty word
@daveh30 Yeah one too many bit on that clickbait. Ohh well...
I wholeheartedly thank you for years of entertainment and laughter, Reggie!
Bye Bye Sweet Bubbling Prince!
You will be forever missed!
Let's be real here.
The man was a suit.
He's fantastic at pushing product, pizza hut knows that.
Don't lie to yourselves.
He doesn't care about games.
Goodbye and thank you for all those moments Reggie
Will be missed
See ya Reggie it's been fun. On a side note, does anyone know if there's any info anywhere on Dragons Dogma? it's supposed to be out this month and I've seen nothing covering it or anywhere to actually buy it from. has it been delayed and I missed it? Never played it but looks like a good dark souls/skyrim type game to sink my teeth into
Goodbye Reggie!
He reads these right?
Fun fact: "fils aimé" means "beloved son" in French. It suits him quite well.
I feel bad and I am in a stupor because of the evil king koopa.
@Shiryu
To spawn so many memes shows how much he has done with Nintendo.
Best regards Reggie!
Still hoping for a final Reggie direct. With a peace of Metroid in it.
Bye Reggie, but... Where's the Direct?
@Joyfultoad the fact this type of comment is rare makes me despair for the future of western civilization.
Reggie? who's that?
Take care, Regginator! May you and your fam be well!
He'll be missed. I don't think there was anyone else in the industry whose face I recognized more. There are a few famous names, like Miyamoto, who are more famous I think. But Reggie was the guy we always saw in the videos.
Thanks for everything, Reggie
I've always liked this guy
@Joyfultoad
"My body is ready"
Reggie know how to have fun with Nintendo products.
@PlayedNSlayed
Nothing like Skyrim, not much like Dark Souls, but it is a good action RPG. I’m definitely picking it up for Switch. It’s a western-style RPG developed in Japan. Lots of open-ended exploration without much handholding. Weird follower system, but good fun.
@SniperGaming easy pal...
@SniperGaming you need to relax buddy
@Baart how’s the weather up there
@SniperGaming
Hey maybe replace some of the words you used in that comment . Don't want you to get in trouble
Aw man. Was hoping to see the guy shine in one more Direct. Oh well.. all the best, Reggienator!
I wish him the best of luck.
Still hoping Reggie comes through w/ something on his last day, or Bowser on his first, or I'm just going to remember Reggie's retirement for the US not getting the "blockbuster" games sale the EU/UK is having right now.
Some day Nintendo is going to realize there's this thing called the internet and people notice stuff like this. Maybe Bowser can start a new Era. Maybe he'll become famous for bringing Switch games to My Nintendo since it's even more ridiculous that 2 years after it's launch Switch games are still excluded.
Yeah, Reggie may be a funny mouthpiece with little power but maybe that will be to Bowsers advantage. See ya Reggie, looking forward to the tell all book, should be an interesting read.
Reggie did so much good for Nintendo and it's a sad day to see him go.
All the best Reggie.
Goodbye Reggie - thanks for being the fun Nintendo icon that you were!
For a guy who's been such a big part of Nintendo for so long, it's sad to see him go out with a whimper. Hopefully he has one last surprise left in him before he sets off into retirement.
So, no direct for farewell ??
I was hoping for a final announcement or video, but his retirement announcement video was really well done
Best of luck to him. He’ll definitely be remembered.
@SniperGaming Inappropriate language there.
@RickD No one’s ever really here either.
@Bunkerneath Thought I were the only one, I never really liked him either. He always felt like a door to door salesmen that will say anything truth or untruths.
All the best Mr. Reggie Sir! I have a bit of a soft spot for the big lug ❤️
@alchemistrpm too negative for you hun?
@Joyfultoad
Are you sure about that? The man could work for almost any company he wanted, but stuck with Nintendo for fifteen years.
You could be right, but that doesn't change the fact that his dedication to his company and exuberant approach drove him to push Nintendo forward, especially in the United States.
At the very least, he enjoyed doing what he did, for quite a long time, and did a great job of connecting with Nintendo fans.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with that, nor those fans showing appreciation for his work.
Feel free to do you and think his work irrelevant to the gaming community, but I think I'm not alone in expressing that he will be fondly remembered by many.
The man certainly gave people strong feelings one way or another. Best wishes to you Reggie, E3 won't be the same without you.
I interviewed for a job at Nintendo of America where one of the responsibilities would've be a weekly meeting with Reggie and the rest of leadership to report sales projections. That would've been a dream come true. Reggie, it's been fun. Enjoy retirement.
It has been a thrill knowing you on the news over the years. Sayonara, Reggie Fils-Aime. Best wishes on retirement.
Truly one of Nintendo's greatest characters. Enjoy your time off Reggie!
Best of luck to him.
He was a PR guy that was entertaining at times. I would much rather someone like Iwata that moved his way up. I don't know if the new guy Bowser is the same, just a suit or if he worked his way up through Nintendo.
@Joyfultoad Sure he was a marketing person but he did it well and with a certain amount of dedication, cringe worthy at times but he tried.
Not everyone can be face of a company branch like that.
Guys like Bobby Botick and Straus Zelnick are typical suits they only talk money, they don't feel relatable or likable and Reggie managed to create a likable persona for marketing and it helped but he didn't NEED to do that.
No idea why people thought there would be a farewell direct. He made a goodbye video already
Make a guest appearance from time to time and hope all goes well in the future.
wish i could retire
Still a sad day, even if I've always been a Reggie critic. I didn't like his overly stiff PR formality and monotone droning presentation, but I always thought he was genuine when not "defending/promoting" the product.
@SetupDisk The new guy is fairly new at Nintendo. Formerly of Proctor & Gamble, like Reggie (food and personal care products) and did an unfortunate stint at EA..... I definitely dislike the new trend of promote new hires to the top that aren't steeped in the company. Investors like that because it shakes up the norms which they always see as a way of breaking through resistance to the fastest cash out.
@NEStalgia
I guess that would be the only reason that would make sense. In most any business you usually want someone that understands all aspects. This hiring guys from the outside is kinda ridiculous.
@SetupDisk Sadly it's the new trend in every industry. "Being an executive" is a career path on it's own, so you just hire someone that's a trained expert on "being an executive" rather than someone that's an expert on the company itself. Nobody rises up the ranks anymore, the plebs are perma-plebs, and the management is hired to start at the top. Because this isn't a modern feudalism/caste system at all.
Let the reign of Bowser begin!
i was really hoping we would get a surprise direct today but idk maybe we will get a direct nxt Thursday and Joker should be out by then already...
God speed Reggie-san... I salute you.
My body was not reggie
@Yosher The official changeover happens in the E3 Direct, calling it now.
So long, my Captain. May your body always be ready for whatever comes next.
(Also: I, for one, welcome our new demon-turtle overlord!)
Goodbye Reggie. You are the best
cries
Best of luck Reggie! To good health and good times with friends and family!
@PlayedNSlayed It comes out next tuesday, i think it's like 30 bucks, I pre-ordered through Amazon myself.
@Joyfultoad you could t be more wrong. My son caught hi. A few times online playing Mario Kart on 3DS. My son is a beast on that game, he never comes in anywhere other than first place. Unless he is playing Reggie. The man could race better than anyone I’ve ever seen. If you ever catch him online you will see that he spends a lot of time honing his skills.
And yes d know it was him. His name was his full name and it had the special characters around it signifying he was a Nintendo employee.
Take care, Reggie. We'll miss you!!!
@Joyfultoad "Everyone disliked that"
Real talk though I'm gonna miss Reggie. He essentually became in charge of the American localization team and was the root for most American Nintendo fans. I don't think Nintendo would be in the same place as it is today without him.
@Joyfultoad Bundle of fun, aren't ya?
@dougphisig It must be easy to find in the US then. In the UK I can't find it listed anywhere,even Amazon UK just lists the other console versions. Doesn't look good for it over here if that's the case
@PlayedNSlayed Sounds like they may not be doing a physical version for the UK I saw mentioned on reddit. You guys kind of get screwed over on that sometimes it seems.
@MarioFan02 Let's hope for it!
Farewell, Reggie. You're leaving Nintendo, but your legacy endures. You weren't just another suit; you had fun with your job and, while I'm sure there were many serious moments, you gave your all to make an impression on the fans and, I'm sure, your coworkers.
I'm still not fully Reggie for this, but your retirement is certainly well-earned.
Nintendo may never kick ass and take names while making games again. All the best Reggie. Thank you, and much success to you and your future endeavors.
@daveh30 There better be. Hopefully. Please?
Reggie, wish you all the best, and may your body always be ready.
@Optimusultimus ok, ok..
@thiswaynow idc i suck at english
Thanks for all the great times Reggie! Hopefully Doug Bowser can continue Nintendo's tradition of relatable celebrity status executives. I'm sure Reggie and Doug's marketing background gives them an advantage here. It seems the only other executive outside of Nintendo that has these same qualities would be Phil Spencer at Microsoft.
Thanks Reggie you will be missed by all of us at
Nintendo World Community
Anticlimactic much? No big announcements, no big send off, just leave your keys on the desk and get out. Yeesh.
I thought there aS supposed to be an announcement for a game that everyone wanted today. It Said in the retirement Reggie video.
Gonna miss this man. Hope he still makes the occasional appearance at Nintendo events.
Goodbye Reggie. Hope he can come to some events like Nintendo E3 or at least in one Nintendo Direct every year.
@PlayedNSlayed Dragon's dogma is quite unique game. It's a Japanese take on Western Fantasy, with very over the top combat a lot of things to try out, an interesting if not weird follower system.
It is truely a one of a kind experience.
It's not perfect but it's many flaws give it it's distinct character.
I say, pick it up if you are into quirky action RPG's that focus more on combat and exploration rather than story.
Farewell, Reggie
