You're probably already aware that Pokémon Detective Pikachu is just weeks away from release thanks to our healthy number of articles on the matter (we're excited, okay?), but it would seem that our suspicions are pretty accurate: this might turn out to be a genuinely great video game movie.
The film has just had its first press screening in Tokyo and the first impressions are mouthwateringly positive. We've gathered just a few of the thoughts shared by the press and influencers who attended for you below.
We've also been treated to a brand new poster:
Will you be going to see this on 10th May? Do you think you'll enjoy it? Let us know in the usual place.

I'm optimistic for this movie, but this feels more like I'm being advertised to by people who were given quotes the marketing team wants on the back of the Bluray box.
If this has a buizel in it it's an instant 10 out of 10 for me.
@BLD : I strongly doubt that any of them are Pokémon fans.
I'm sure fans of Illumination Pictures (?), Dreamworks Animation etc. will love this, but I find most big-budget Hollywood animated films to be visually grotesque and emotionally soulless, not helped by the fact that such outlandish characters are played by recognisable celebrities in their everyday voices (and being paid ghastly amounts to do so), which I personally find to be jarring.
As crazy as I am for Pokémon, and as much as I love cinema, this is simply too much of a cynical and strenuously-market-researched endeavour for me to be able to enjoy it. I have a bad feeling that someone will inevitably drag me along to see this, but I am not in the least bit optimistic. I'm generally more willing to see a bad film if it's available in 3D, but I would imagine this to be a post-converted (i.. "Fake 3D") affair.
I dread this being enormously successful for that will only indicate that the worst is yet to come. Different strokes, I guess. I still enjoy watching some of the traditionally animated Pokémon films from Japan though.
Awesome. Hopefully if it's successful enough, Nintendo will consider licensing more movies based on their franchises.
I'm still stuck wondering how they decided to make a Detective Pikachu movie in the first place, and now even more surprised to know it's most likely good and enjoyable. Lol
Looks like a good time to me. They could've taken the art direction in a totally different way but this is how it should look. I can see this easily passing 1 billion in worldwide sales at the box office.
I don't trust reviewers. I still remember what they said about Captain Marvel.
@Kalmaro that film was protected, cause nothing say “female empowerment” like a female superhero who can even stand for herself🤦♂️
I'm so looking forward to this. Psyduck is worth the admission alone.
I'm really excited to see where this movie goes! I'll totally try and see it day one, but the theater might be a bit to crowded. I just want to see some ghost type pokemon, so hopefully gengar is in the movie.
@Tantani The film itself was pretty decent though, it was probably better than the average origin movie cause let’s be honest, those ones are usually the worst. People don’t seem to like Brie Larson for some reason and the whole smiling fiasco was seriously horrible.
@Kalmaro what was wrong with Captain Marvel? I went to see it at the cinema but fell asleep during the middle. The beginning and end seemed fine.
To hype
Or not to hype
That is the question.
I'm glad early impressions are good, but I will try to keep expectations low until I'm seeing it myself.
It still just looks WRONG. I would be so much more interested if this were fully animated.
Not every film needs to be live action but the people in Hollywood seem to have decided to kill off animation and dump everything into CGI alongside real actors. But these designs are so obviously CGI and not there and they don't remotely look like things that belong in that setting. They don't look like living creatures that belong in that setting along side real humans, they look like possessed plushies! Heck Ludiculo looks like he actually has those arts and crafts eyes we glue onto things in elementary school art class! Charizard looks incredibly fake! Snorlax looks like a giant body pillow with a face. It just doesn't work!
The uncanny valley is so massive here that I can barely stomach looking at them. Every trailer it is so obvious to me that the actors are talking to a toy or a green box indicating where the Pokemon is supposed to be!
You guys actually think this looks good? Really? Because I just don't see it.
@MysticGengar He's in there fighting a Blastoise.
Bought tickets last night, looking forward to it!
I initially wasn't bothered about this but I've gradually become very, very hype.
@JamesR I don’t see anywhere as much hate for Thor: The Dark World. They’re both blonde, fly and are pretty overpowered. The villains are both sorta forgettable. I wonder what the difference between the main characters is..:
@whanvee
Cool, but you didn't have to say WHERE he was... I wanted to find it for myself. A simple "he's in there" followed by the spoiler filter-thing would have been nice...
@nessisonett Haven't seen that one, but I did fall asleep during Thor Ragnarok at the cinema. I guess I'm not a Marvel guy.
@JamesR Yeah, contrary to popular belief it’s actually possible for you to have different tastes from other people lol. I’ve been a massive comics fan since I was young and have been to see every one in the cinema but they aren’t for everyone and I really hope that these big franchises don’t push out smaller films that are admittedly better.
@Kalmaro "I don't trust reviewers. I still remember what they said about Captain Marvel."
I enjoyed Captain Marvel, but Black Panther? Gosh that was corny. Possibly the worst film in the MCU but it seemed to have such goodwill behind it. Possibly because of how African Americans are treated in America it was seen as a celebration of African culture, which is cool and needed. But as a movie? I thought it stank. Detective Pikachu looks good from what I've seen. I'm optimistic about it, regardless of what the famous talking heads are saying about it.
@MysticGengar They show it in multiple trailers, so not super spoilery really.
I'm as hyped as I'm gonna get. Can't wait for May 10th
@MysticGengar He's in there , totally not fighting a blastoise. Hehe. You could see it in the trailers so I'm not exactly sure how spoilerific my comment is
@Heavyarms55 Yes I do think this looks good. For a couple reasons:
Frankly speaking the whole thing being "so uncanny valley" seems to be limited to you and a vocal minority of people.
So what if it's a live-action CGI mix. In this case actual effort and love was put into the movie and it shows.
@Silly_G So are you saying you don't believe for a second that any of the effort or love shown to the franchise so far with this movie is genuine?
@whanvee @Ogbert
Oh... uh... really? I didn't watch ALL the trailers, so I might have missed it. Can one of you send a link or something? I wanna see this for myself!
@MysticGengar If you google "Detective Pikachu trailer with Gengar", you're gonna get about a dozen or so links. I attached one just for ease

@UmbreonsPapa
Thank you! This makes my life much easier.
Edit: Oh... oh god... that is terrifying. I'm not sure what I expected, but my god thats accurate, terrible, terrifying, nightmare fuel, but it's absolutely perfect, because that's exactly what Gengar IS.
@Silly_G "s crazy as I am for Pokémon, and as much as I love cinema, this is simply too much of a cynical and strenuously-market-researched endeavour for me to be able to enjoy it."
Lmao what? do you know theres an actual Detective Pikachu game thats been out for years?
You are a pokemon fan yet you think this is a market researched endeavour when its clearly based (maybe not historically but the idea) from a game NINTENDO AND TPC created years before
This will only help sales of Pokémon Switch at the end of the year .... Not that it needs any help though.
Can't wait to go watch this. Might even pre-order tickets if I manage to convince my parents to go to the city on mother's day.
grumble grumble Sinnoh remakes...
Haha, what a funny joke.
Wait a minute. Is that... squints
Oh, it's a crowd of my fans, greeting me with flaming... rods of wood... and giant forks...
Oh no it's an angry mob.
Chuckles.
I'm not sorry.
I'm soooooo hyped. Only downside is that it comes out on the anniversary of my mom's death, and it's a movie that deals with loss of a parent. Trying to decide if I can mentally handle that. I want to see it on opening, though... ugh!
This is going to be the first movie I've ever watched on opening night.
Can’t wait, looks great!
Looks like a solid release!
Sonic, on the other hand...
@nessisonett the first two Thor movies are consistently put towards the bottom of ranked lists.
@JamesR I think the best part was when it ended. Speaking seriously though, just check my comment below.
@The_Mysteron I liked Black panther because it had a villain that was believable. That said, the movie was overrated. I don't think it broke any new ground, other than having a ton of black people in it which... Seems kinda odd to get hyped for.
Captain Marvel though? That was overhyped even more. The character was unrelatable and could not tell a joke sand at no time does she ever struggle. Instead she's just held back the entire movie while also being told 24/7 by her BFF how awesome she is... Even though we never see her do anything in the past.
Don't get me started on brie larson outside the movie set.
Its funny all though a pikachu swears... oki...
I'll admit it: as a Pokemon fan, I'm pretty hyped for this one. Everything I've seen so far is pushing many of the right buttons. Admittedly the "realistic" Pokemon designs were a bit jarring at first, bit they've grown on me.
I'll be watching this in theaters. I also played and beat Detective Pikachu on my 3DS recently and am curious to see how the game's plot compares with the movie.
@MysticGengar I know! I can't wait to see it live on screen
So are these just random twits on twitter or ones with huge followings? I'd be much more likely to trust random twits than huge following ad campaign twits.
@idrawrobots The point is that when they came out, there wasn't the same backlash and it doesn't take a genius to work out why. I dread to think what will happen if they follow the comics and have Jane Foster pick up the Thor mantle.
@Kalmaro Speaking as male POC who grew up with not many examples of mainstream black superheroes on TV or in movies, it was nice to see one done with care and conviction. Was it the best movie in the MCU? Probably not. But it, at the very least, showcased and gave us our own little corner of the Marvel universe that traditionally tends to look a majority one way
@Nekonokatzen
Save yourself the heart ache and watch it the next day. Sorry about your mom.
I'll stick to the anime Pokemon films thanks.
@Tantani Eventually Thor and Iron Man and Captain America will be replaced with other versions. I'm perfectly fine with them doing Jane Thor Foster, but if they don't do Throg I will be disappointed.
For the record, my opinion is that Larson is a pretty good actress who has given one great performance so far—in the underseen “Short Term 12.” “Captain Marvel” was fine but forgettable—just like a vast majority of the superhero movies I’ve seen.
But those aren’t facts. They’re just, like, my opinion, maaan.
Let's drop the captain marvel subject
and everything related to it please~
Yes, specially that.
@nessisonett ...One has a hammer for a weapon?
Is this it? Is this finally the film that will truly break the videogame curse? Will we be truly free from this curse and move on with our lives with a smile on our faces? Is this it?
Also, CAN YOU ALL SHUT YOUR YAP ABOUT CAPTAIN MARVEL (INCLUDING THOSE DEFENDING THE FILM)!? YOU ARE COMPLETELY OUT OF SUBJECT!
Excited for the movie, but these are obviously people who were paid off.
@JamesR I didn't have time to watch the CM movie but when I saw her in endgame, I thought she was bland, a boring version of Stark and can't draw a crowd. She is easily outshined by everybody else based on character and that's it. CM isn't hot garbage as others have claimed but her character is too one dimensional.
Weakest MCU film, though, is Thor: Dark World and Ironman 2.
That aside, I'm pretty stoked for Detective Pikachu. It looka and sounds like a real good time
@MegaVel91 It shows to you perhaps. Looks terrible to me.
@JamesR Seeing Pikachu in the baby car seat is enough for full admission.
@UmbreonsPapa Speaking also as a male POC, I could care less what people look like, I just want a good story.
Wonder woman was almost exclusively white and I think it was better than black panther. Not because of any race involved, it was just a good story with good effects, a great lead and the character struggled.
Black panther, the protagonist didn't interest me much he felt bland up until he realizes that his father was horrid for what he did to killmonher's father.
Honestly, the villain was the best part of black panther for me. Wakanda was nice to look at and it was cool seeing the blend of African tradition and technology. The fact that it had a bunch of black people in it never fazed me much. If I want to watch a movie full of black people I can just fire up Madea or something.
Was it nice to have so many POC in a movie? Sure. Did it make the movie better? Not for me, I was too busy being annoyed that black panther can't fight (seriously, his suit is based on the idea that he gets hit to power himself up).
@The_Mysteron
I love Black Panther, it’s up there with Cap 2 and Thor Ragnarok for me. Michael B Jordan is amazing! Martin Freeman, however can do one.
@Heavyarms55
@Kalmaro what did they say about Captain Marvel?
@Pangasauras What you'd expect. Powerful movie, catbstole the show. A step for women, she was awesome, Brie Larson is a strong lead and full of emotion, etc.
Pretty much what you'd expect from people paid to watch movies. The actual regular people scores like from people like us were much more realistic. Look up the rotten tomatoes debacle for captain marvel.
Everybody is getting all worked up over controversies and disliking films, and I'm just sitting here failing to contain my hype for the one-two punch of Endgame and Detective Pikachu.
@Auracle Ikr I can't wait for season two one punch.
