If you didn't claim your free Piranha Plant code in time, there's no need to worry, as Nintendo has promised to make the fighter available as a standalone purchase in the future.

Wait—what?! Yes please! 🤠
I really like how it plays. Very straightforward and unique without feeling broken. I wish I could say the same for characters like K. Rool, Incineroar and Inkling.
she's finally here!
I wish the patch notes gave us the specific number amounts for each change, but the fact that we know know what was changed is a good start.
Piranha Plant released AND Incineroar gets buffed ? Man I can’t wait to play later tonight!!!!!!!
@CharlieSmile _ I must feel ashamedfor likely knowing where the image took inspiration from.
Can't wait for the datamine!
Here's a new PG for Piranha Plant:
@CharlieSmile @Aerona
Piranha Plant is a female comfirmed!EDIT: They meant Viridi, not Piranha Plant, sorry.
Nice... I guess no direct
Super lame update
Been kicking ass with piranha plant for the past hour hehe
Downloading update right now
2 Things:
1) Piranha Plant is AWESOME! The personality in his moves, taunts, and victory animations is hilarious, and his moveset is surprisingly versatile. I'm already having a blast with him, and I'm looking forward to getting better with him!
2) Is this a Smash update with actual patch notes?! Praise the fighting game gods! A little disappointed to see my man Ike's up special get nerfed, but it shouldn't be too bad in total.
I'm so mad! I didn't realize they were emailing us a freaking download code! They send so many receipts every time you order something from the eShop, I got sick of them clogging up my inbox and just deleted everything from Nintendo I'd gotten! I literally purchased the game and the fighter pack DLC day one! (Actually I bought it on Amazon, they screwed up the preorder then I bought it on the eShop and sold the physical copy when it got here.)
Ugh, love this game but Nintendo needs to seriously learn how to run an online service. Like, just hire a couple people from Apple or Google or something, and then make a system that doesn't rely on frickin download codes.
...Better than the Switch's major update.
Did...they nerf Chrom and Ike? 😒
@ilikeike Seems like everyone else mostly got buffs. Kind of annoys me too since that's one of my favorite kill moves in world of light.
@TF-Warrior @CharlieSmile - How does that confirm any sex of the character? The only "She" they refer to is Viridi.
EDIT: Added to the conversation.
Who in UK stayed up just to play Pirahna Plant on Smash?
Nothing but Love for my bitey plant boy!😁
@TF-Warrior She'll hear you = Viridi will hear you.
Aaaanyway, Jigglypuff was buffed, that's awesome.
Quite the update... haven't had time to sift through my replays. Whelp. I guess I'll feed them to my Piranha Plant.
Watched my son run through the tutorial stage for about 20 minutes. Seems like a pretty unique character, wasn't expecting it to basically fly, that was kinda cool.
It auto-updated for us, but only after we had to update to 7.0 first, not sure why we hadn't updated to that earlier.
Dragonball FighterZ was also downloading an update alongside SSBU, just an FYI, I have no idea what it does.
Oh, and looking forward to dragging my wife into Spirit mode w/ me now that it's 2 player. Even though both my sons warned me not to b/c it's too hard for her. We'll give it a go anyway.
No Waluigi? Waaaaaaaaah!
Love how absolutley goofy he acts. I haven't seen a character act like that since Dunk Hunt.
@rjejr - Likely a pre-req for Videl and Gogeta being added later.
Pressing both jump buttons at the same time will now cause you to short hop.
Am I the only one more excited for this? remapping one jump on the right trigger will make it super easy to short hop consistently, game changer for me.
Tried the Piranha Plant for one round. It was satisfyingly hilarious having it use a fire flower.
#PiranhaPlantMasterRace
Bowser got buffed!? I was already unstoppable with him. I'll take it!
Piranha Plant got added, two of my mains got buffed, and detailed patch notes! Hooray!
Piranha Plant feels very unique and is a great addition to the roster, but isn’t someone I would main. PP is definitely not a bad character at all, very very fun and funny, but not my favorite.
Our beautiful little biting boi is finally here sheds tear
PP did not click for me. Guess I’ll wait for a combo video from the community.
@thesilverbrick K. Rool is hardly broken. He’s a huge target and pretty vulnerable to fast attacks with decent range (outside of his couple of ranged attacks, his reach is pretty poor). At least we are starting to have a meta that doesn’t include all the light speedy characters at the top - he’s good but still can be beaten if you know how to counter him!
Nice, wasnt expecting Plant till early Feb. Thanks for the patch notes too, some good balancing was done.
What if you decide to delete your data and want to start from scratch if you wanted? Would it be like the previous installments (3DS, Wii U) and the DLC stays?
@Delibheel @Paraka Sorry about that. And good thing you @ me too. This plant looks deaf anyway.
This character seems to play pretty well, and it looks awesome!
‘Tis a day of the highest highs and lowest lows for Ultimate. Let us celebrate the birth of Piranha Plant and mourn the nerf of Ike.
In other news, Piranha Plant is the one we’re all rooting for!
@DavidMac Not really their fault you deleted the code and this news has been floating around for a while now. Nintendo life has even had an article or two about reminding people I believe.
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2019/01/piranha_plant_will_become_available_in_smash_bros_ultimate_laroundr_february
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2019/01/reminder_you_have_just_one_week_to_claim_piranha_plant_as_free_dlc_for_smash_ultimate
@B-Locks bad communication is their fault. If you go back and listen to any of the directs and what not, they emphasized that you needed to register if you got physical, and if you got digital you didn't need to do anything. I don't remember hearing anything about them giving out download codes back then, and I do read check all incoming emails and don't remember seeing anything saying "this is your code for the DLC fighter" heck even just having a picture in the email would have alerted people better.
Also if I buy something from Apple on iOS, I own it on all my devices. I can get new devices, I can always click on purchased and find any old purchases. I assume Android users can do the same sort of thing. If I buy something on Humble Bundle, I can log back in and see my code. Nobody should ever be emailing people any codes of value that they can't get through that company's website and their online profile. This is a classic example of Nintendo not getting how to do things on the internet.
Wish they had left Ike alone, but glad to see Samus and Link get buffs.
@DavidMac On the Nintendo news channel on the switch itself, it stated that if you bought it digitally the game would be automatically registered to your account (and physical would need to manually register), but if you stopped reading there then you missed out because underneath that it stated that the download code would be sent to you via email after registered (auto or manual). They never said you didn't need to do nothing if you bought digital. That article was posted on Nintendo News channel 12 / 7.
chrombo is dead
So much for Click Clock Woods!
updates with the fury of a thousand Suns
@B-Locks I'm not sure if your reading comprehension is bad, or if you're just being obtuse. My point is not that they didn't put it in fine print, it's that they buried the lead.
@DavidMac My reading comprehension is not the best, I admit. I mean I feel for you for missing out. Its just my opinion that it's your fault to a degree. It is natural for you to want to voice your concern with the way things are executed by Nintendo such as download codes, I just personally don't agree with your opinion is all.
So, is Piranha Plant available in World of Light roster immediately, or is he on the map somewhere? Nor near wifi to download and just curious.
@CharlieSmile
IT'S finally here! 👍
An additional note I spotted: The Japanese news message said Piranha Plant goes on sale on 1st Feb for 550 yen, so it's possible we'll see it at the same time, probably at around £4.49.
Hey, guys, I've heard rumor of a glitch that could CORRUPT YOUR SAVE DATA if you play with Piranha Plant in All-Star Mode. I'd steer clear of doing that until the patch comes out.
@BlueKnight07 I’m not completely sure. I 100%ed World of Light and it said he was added to the roster. So I’m not sure if he has a spot...I guess not
@Medic_alert If you bought the digital version then the game is automatically registered to your account. Being registered to your account would of then sent the email with the code. DavidMac deleted the email as he was not aware.
"The following Spirits will now appear in the shop: River Survival, Golden Dash Mushroom"
Well it's about time! Those were the ones I had missed out on, so I'll definitely grab them when they appear! Also, PIRANHA PLANT IS OUT!!!
@MasterGraveheart Thanks for letting me know. I'll avoid that to the best of my ability.
@DavidMac On one hand you say you read and check all email. But your initial post says you were tired of Nintendo’s multiple emails and just deleted them all. Which sounds to me you didn’t really read and check all of your email.
I will say I don’t know what email service you use or how it displays in whatever screen your using. I’m looking back at my download code email and while the subject doesn’t necessarily state it’s for a download code, you can clearly see it states “Your download code is ready” in the preview of the email body.
@UmbreonsPapa well I'd love to argue with you, but I don't have the email. I use iCloud, so this is one of the few instances where having an email provider who respects your privacy and deletes your email when you say to delete it doesn't work in my favour. I normally would have been able to restore from a Time Machine backup ... only I got a new external HDD for Christmas, so I moved my old Time Machine drive to the Wii U since I'd been using a 2.5 inch that wasn't getting powered by it's ports, and I moved that to backing up my MacBook and put the new drive connected to my old computer that I'm running as a torrent + Plex server. Of course when I did that I thought, "Is there anything on my current backup I could need? Nah my laptop has everything on it I need, it'll back up to it's new drive, everything will be fine!"
Apparently not. I realize that I bare responsibility for this. I just think it's absurd that Nintendo doesn't have a self serve option to fix this problem. It's insane that I HAVE to talk to a rep on the phone (when their call centre was crashing under the load and just hanging up on people today) when they could just have a page in my Nintendo that lets you get the code again.
Heck even the Wii U, if I get a 'reward' with My Nintendo it'll automatically know in my Wii U that I get X discount on X game. The eShop should be able to just KNOW that I get the DLC fighter. It's a needlessly complicated system that is ultimately going to cost them money, because they have to pay for the customer service reps who are going to have to sort through these. (And they've sold how many million copies already?)
They should next make the goombas from the live action mario movie as dlc or spirit fighters.
@CharlieSmile Heh, I would be impressed if I wasn't so appalled for having watched that video.
@DavidMac
I think you're over estimating how many people accidentally deleted their email that says your download code is ready in the subject from Nintendo, especially since Nintendo told us to look for their email containing the download code. I don't mean to sound mean, but I haven't seen anyone else with this problem.
@Spudtendo Given the fact that Nintendo's call centre was hanging up on people as soon as the call connected, I think you're under estimating how many people either deleted it or had it get lost in their spam folder. It's a bad design.
Thanks to the 2 piranha plants that tried to 2v1 me in free4all only to get beat bad and put me in elite smash. Saved that replay like a mother. Lol another character to beat up on for me. MEGAMAIN!
@ilikeike what they did to Chrom 's up special is unforgivable tho.
Anyone know if I’m still eligible to get Piranha Plant code?
I ordered the game this week and it is arriving today (hopefully). Previous articles said I had until 31st, but is that officially Nintendo’s cut off or was that a guess because we thought PP was dropping in February?
@DavidMac Or you can read your mails before massdeleting them.
@Lemmy_the_Koopa You know, based on this conversation, I think I have a good idea of why I decided to mass delete every email with Nintendo in it.
coming over from dota to ssbu . dear Nintendo i want numbers !!!!!
@DavidMac It's still on you and I disagree about the abundance of mails Nintendo is sending out. In addition they communicated how you will get Piranha Plant on their webpage. Since you were clearly anticipating this little fighter, all you had to do was read and follow the description.
I cannot access email for the account I registered on My Nintendo with. The code was sent they’re and they insist on me verifying that address before they’ll let me make that change to my account. I guess the pipe dream is over for me until I have to pay!!
@DavidMac
Just chiming in.... I think there may be a way to recover that code again. I'll let you know when I find a way how.
I've used the code and done the update but no Plant? Is there something I need to do to unlock it?
After update OS to latest version, patching software plus install piranha plant, then all characters unlocked disappear except default characters + piranha plant. Anyone experienced this problem too?
Be careful! Downloading this has corrupted my data.
@Nomad It did unlock for me on the spot, though I have every fighter unlocked and WoL beaten.
@OhMy It's the All-Star mode https://www.destructoid.com/psa-avoid-using-piranha-plant-in-smash-ultimate-s-all-star-mode-for-the-moment-540876.phtml
@Lemmy_the_Koopa That's not what happened with me. I initiated the update and then once it was done I tried to open Smash, but the whole thing crashed before I played even one second and my Switch told me I had to re-download the game because it was corrupt. Currently re-downloading the game. I'm, sadly, not tech savvy enough to know if this means my save is gone as well- but I guess I'll find out once it's re-downloaded.
@OhMy Best of luck!
@Lemmy_the_Koopa oh okay. I have. every fighter ulnlocked. I rechecked the code and it says its already redeemed but still no PPlant. Game is updated. Weird, seems like most people already have it and dont need to unlock it.
@Kienda Nintendo communicated multiple times that Piranha Plant would be launched in February and that you have to register your game card (claim your gold points) before 11:59 p.m. PT on Jan 31.
Then you'll get a code (10 days max) through the mail, based on which mail your My Nintendo account uses. If you use Gmail, don't forget to check your spam and stuff.
The download code expires 11:59 p.m. PT on 6/30/2019.
@Nomad Okay this is weird, the Piranaha Plant joining the fighter roster came, once after all the ingame update notifications.
I haven't received a download code. Has this happened anyone else?
@Lemmy_the_Koopa Okay sorted. I had to redownload it for some bizarre reason. That was a fun afternoon.
@Lemmy_the_Koopa Thank you! Sadly, once re-downloaded my attempt to open the game had the exact same issue and now I have to re-download it again. Downloading this DLC has completely broken my copy of Smash. Not quite sure where to go from here...
@OhMy try to use another micro-sd card, it might be corrupt if it keeps giving errors. Or eject it when your Switch is off, and download it to internal memory if you make some space (it wil only download to internal if you have no sd inserted).
@Megal0maniac Cheers for the advice. It's halfway through it's 2nd re-download attempt. If that doesn't work I'll give what you've suggested a go.
Thanks again. =D
I bought the retail version & claimed my gold points. but still no email with the download codes (bought the game way back in December)
anyone know how I can get Nintendo to resend the email?
Help! How does he appear? I registered physical copy today, since I did not do it earlier (procrastination). Do I recieve an email? If so, when?
@DavidMac Send Nintendo an Email or call them, they'll send you your code again.
@geheimxy They don't seem to have a customer service email. And their phones aren't picking up right now. Have to wait for them to open again.
@Nomad
Well, for now have fun with one planty boi
@OhMy Hopefully they will soon issue a fix
@Not_Soos
Me neither.
@CharlieSmile
Between teeth and horrifying bugs, she's the very definition of a trap.
Sorry, sweetie, you walked straight into this one.
Plant Gang is here!
@Lemmy_the_Koopa Fixed! Hurray!
I played 1 match and his classic mode and I'm in love. I think I found my new main! Gonna play more SUPER soon.
@OhMy
@Paraka
What do you mean by the first comment you said
@DavidMac I accidentally deleted my code as well initially. On the support website, they have a contact us page and an option for web chat as opposed to calling in, which is what I did. I just told them what happened, the approximate date I bought my downloaded copy (preload) and they resent me a code in under two days. I believe the title said something about Nintendo Customer Support so it was easier to identify. Either chat or phone should work as the chat option isn't available if they are really backed up, and their hours are 6am-7pm PST.
It was a pretty easy process as far as support goes.
Hope that helps.
@DrawnRed - I know who the artist is behind that P. Plant design.
@DavidMac I KNOW I got an email a long time ago with a download code, and I'm pretty sure I was smart enough to not delete it, but now I can't find it. I've noticed in the comments that we're not the only ones having problems, either. What the crap, Nintendo, how are we supposed to get a new download code???
@Joeynator3000 I'm thinking/hoping Switch ver 7 added underlying infrastructure for something that will be unlocked in a point release. I can't see any reason why that exceedingly minor update is a major revision unless it's major on the inside, and just doesn't let us know the reasons it's different yet. 7 is like "Switch 2.0 Pro. Now ships with Neon Purple and Neon Lavender joycons."
@Paraka Probably something like that. I haven't really been following it that much, just saw it on the shelf in the library when I went into pick up tax forms so I borrowed it for a week. Then Inoti Ed the download last night.
Super small complaint but its coming anyway.
Why don't they have this alphabetical? Who cares anymore about the order these characters were added to smash?
@AlexSora89 wow that comment is not okay
@DavidMac Well, you should always save every receipt at least for some time in case something goes wrong, so this is a learning experience. If you just don't want them to fill your inbox, make a rule so all of Nintendo emails go directly into a special folder/label. This probably will help you next time. You might as well try giving Nintendo a call. I've read they send duplicates if you deleted it on accident.
@coolaggro Sakurai cares.
@DavidMac I’m not 100% sure about this, but I think you can still redeem the code. I think the deadline for redeeming the code is May or June. You just needed to register the physical game by last week — and since you bought digital you don’t need to worry about it. I’d check your emails and the deleted folder in your email account, and maybe call Nintendo Customer Service to see if they can resend the code to you.
@HenFjo If you registered it before the deadline, you should receive the code within a week under the name "Thanks for buying Super Smash Bros. Ultimate". You have until june to redeem it.
@RaphaBoss At least he doesn't get any cheap wins anymore when he uses a last stock out of stage panic up b.
Piranha Plant is so much fun to play as! I love his personality and that his solution to everything is "bite it"... long live Audrey 2 from Little Shop of Horrors!
The Palutena Guidance for Piranha Plant is absolutely hilarious!
@KingBowser Why would you want to do that?
@MasterGraveheart I'd recommend to steer clear of even playing that mode.
They need to update the online can't play two players on one switch if I do a private match. while i try to play 2v2 with a friend
Anyone else not received a code from Nintendo?
@Devlind Well, just for replayability, that's all.
@KingBowser I guess you're right, but I would suggest making another account in that case. You get to keep your old save, but the only bad thing is that you'll get no online if you don't have a family membership.
@Devlind I don't play online, but I'll keep note for future reference.
@KingBowser Then getting another account on the Switch is the way to go. At least I did that with BotW.
Day two of Nintendo's call centres being completely overwhelmed by people needing the download code resent! Haven't even been able to get through to get to a rep.
@CharlieSmile
That response was... not as angry as I had anticipated. Well, off to more evil schemes I go!
In all seriousness, though, I often do less-than-correct humour on the site. I like to be playful, for black humour is all about subverting expectations - but in my opinion it works best when whoever the joke is on is not too offended. Besides, you served me that joke on a silver platter anyway.
Especially given your SJWin' around, I thought it'd be fun to test your limits a little. It always becomes a banterfest when I feel like it, so keep that in mind. Alex... awaaaaaay!
Hey, patch notes! Which I didn't read before playing, so Partner Eevee on the spirit board was a nice surprise.
@AlexSora89
Fun fact, using the term SJW to refer to anyone is a good way to advertise that you never learned critical thinking, and don't have a college education.
Social Justice is the idea that people should be treated fairly, regardless of religion, sexuality, disability, race or any other factor that might cause small minded douche bags to try to out group them.
Using the term implies that there is something wrong with people who want fairness. That's pathetic. You might not like particular things, like when people suggest that things you like aren't good because they think there's some sort of prejudice behind them. But trying to somehow make it taboo to want fairness is just pathetic. And trying to negatively brand people just because they sick of gay people being attacked in the streets, is sick.
Seriously, learn to educate yourself and learn how you're being manipulated, and stop trying to manipulate other people. If you truly believe in free speech, you should also try believing in intelligent restraint. (But you have to be the cause of that least part.)
Oh, also Nintendo's phone lines are still down. Though at least now they tell you to visit their website ... which tells you to call them.

@DavidMac
Well, I knew my joke had all the potential in the world to open up a nasty can of worms, so I feel like I have to give out some explanations. First things first: sorry for the late reply - I've been dealing with all sorts of shenanigans today, even during the writing of what you're about to read; I've worked on this since this morning. If you want, feel free to pull up a stool. It might take a while.
About my education: your guess was correct. I've been held back twice at school, once in my first year and once in the third. Each time the hard work required caught me completely off guard - the first time repeating the school year was far easier thanks to having more outright-pleasant school mates (hence why I fondly remember good ol' 2004-2005 - I even met my best friend back then!), while the second time I had to turn into an utter workaholic just to keep up. Barring English - I'm from the homeland of pizza and a bunch of bad stereotypes, just so we're clear - I had no subjects I "got off easy" with. It's been a struggle just to get my diploma with a 65/100 score, which is why I decided to stop there. I do have learning skills, but still lack any control over what my brain decides to memorise, so it wouldn't have been fair to give my parents such an economical burden which could have lasted far longer than they wished it to. Still, I'm not judgmental of other people's ignorance ("I have two degrees, you don't" is a big no-no in my book), because that would be discrimination, something I'm against. Speaking of which...
About my views on sexual discrimination and racial issues: it can - and will - surprise you, but we're both (no, not just me and you, count @CharlieSmile in too, because I wanted her to be part of the discussion too) on the same boat there. I advocate for total equality as well (who on Earth could tell you that any kind of discrimination is "cool"?!), but maybe I'm a teeny weeny little too heavy on the "neutral" part. I'm talking about neither side, in any context, to be advantaged over the other in any way. Historically, we're not in a very good position on this part: my country is dealing with a nasty piece of work at its top and, without going into details, Eagleland is too. We don't quite live in easy times. As for me? Chauvinism has resulted in a society filled with preconcepts, with blind bigotry being the chains we all are, or used to be in thankfully enough cases, tied to it. The "glass ceiling" that makes a payroll depend on gender is the disgusting offspring of what the male-oriented society has done to us. Feminism, when the movement was first born, was a much-needed breath of fresh air, make no mistake about it; however, lately (about late 2000s-now if you want to be technical about it) it's become more of a "shame on you for being male" thing in certain circles, and this way of thinking could eventually prove to be just as detrimental to society as chauvinism was back in the day. Putting one gender on a pedestal as objectively better than the other undermines whichever merits and flaws either one has, something two Cartoon Network shows have tackled: Teen Titans Go, in an entirely counter-educative "girls are better than us" moral at the end of the episode, and Sonic Boom, with a surprisingly insightful remark by Knuckles. Our country is already getting there - given the admittedly worryingly high rate of murders, domestic violence and sexual assaults on female victims, Italy saw the birth of a new term known as feminicide to indicate such cases of violence; this is also a breath of fresh air, but it also implies that one gender is akin to a higher social class, hence one crime is more serious than the other. I'm sure this wasn't the intended goal, but unfortunate implications could find their way anywhere. As for "different" sexual orientations, I'm straight, but I'm not offended by freedom in one's own sexuality at all; if anything, it's the freedom of being yourself without seeing your own body as a barrier. I'm not against gay marriages and adoption, either - should your kid ask why a guy and a guy, or a girl and a girl, kiss each other, just answer "because they love each other" and call it a day. Anyone figures it all out on his or her own anyway. Same goes for transgender people; the only thing I can say I still see via bigoted glasses might be the concept of "genderfluid", because it's not something I see as anyone's actual need (not to mention it's ripe for - of course, inappropriate - jokes). What gets me riled up, usually, is reverse discrimination, because, as I said, equality is the ideal goal here; going the other way around to "even the odds" is a no-no to me; I don't feel any guilt over being "privileged" just because I coincidentally am okay by bigot standards (not even on a racist/racial standpoint: what can I do if I belong to my own ethnicity, whichever it is?), because feeling guilt would be, once again, a kind of discrimination of itself. So why the joke? Well, explaining the reasoning behind it kind of ruins it, but here goes...
About my stance on black humour/humor: I've learned to appreciate this kind of humour when I got older, as anyone, logically, should. What with The Simpsons being rather tame on BH, especially in the show's later seasons, my first true exposure to it were Seth MacFarlane's works, and I still kind of despise his humour (when the apology for your brand of humour is "you should hear my mother's jokes", you know there's not much excuse), but when - that is, rarely - the jokes hit, they hit hard; when they don't, however, they fall flat on their faces. (Looking at you, beached whale "gag".) However, I'm not saying political correctness should find its way into comedy, either; Jason Alexander as a talking duck has more about it to share (and I don't exclude the possibility of embedding this speech further down in the comment). Turns out, living your - as in, my - school days as a pariah can do a bit of a number on your will to be, ironically enough, an SJW. So there's this site, which used to be great, called inSegreto ("inSecret"), where there were two sides - people who confessed secrets anonymously, and people with names which, via their Facebook accounts, would comment them with, at times, context-appropriate humour. Given the secrets - without restrictions such as moderation and max-number-of-posts-to-IP-address ratio - got more and more outlandish as time went by, I found myself on a gray area where for the first time (I was 24-ish at the time) I could let my nastier side speak its mind. It felt cathartic, and the more I went on, the better my jokes got. With "better", I mean a favourable ratio between how funny they were versus how likely someone would get mad at me over them. Again, as the speech I linked to said - if you want to make an omelette, you've got to break some eggs. Mind you: I'm not advocating freedom of speech as a "get out of jail free" card, because that would be rather easy for me to do. I'm just saying freedom of speech is, ironically, one of the basic human rights that need to be preserved. How does all of this tie into the one joke I presented in my comment?
Provided that my dive into black humour owes its context, in part at least, to me being a bit upset over the risks of Piranha Plant, my decision to tease Charlie - whose own description on her profile labels her as a SJW at the time of this writing, mind you - a bit over it was the fact she saw the character's inclusion as part of Smash's agenda of ever-growing inclusivity, despite the fact the female roster has already grown considerably in each installment (without counting characters that had genders as alternate skins, namely Wii Fit Trainer, Robin, Corrin, and Wendy for Bowser Junior), when Piranha Plant is... well, a plant. If it helps, in several neo-latin languages such as my own (Pianta Piranha), "plant" is a female gendered noun, yes, but that doesn't help much given... well, again, it's a plant! For regular Mario enemies with genders and sexual orientations, your place to go is either one of the Mario RPG spinoffs. As for Smash, no such statement has been made, especially since it's not Petey Piranha (which I assume by the name could be male) but rather a regular plant. And plants, going by the biological barrier between genders, have an entirely different reproducing mechanism, so there's that. As for the joke - sigh, I hate explaining jokes - the Piranha Plant is based on venus flytraps, so I added to the whole "teeth" thing a slight transgender joke in that it's a venus fly trap. The joke worked on enough levels not to pass up, I was a bit nervous about the risk of losing my save data involved, and made it just to tease Charlie in a playful manner, which is something I often do on the site (being playfully teasing, that is) to test her limits (that's what my GIF with Tony Stark and Bruce Banner from The Avengers was for). That's all.
If I've been seen as too unpleasant, that is beyond the "somewhat unpleasant" I sometimes aim for, that wasn't the intention. Also, Dave, the sentence "And trying to negatively brand people just because they sick of gay people being attacked in the streets, is sick." honestly evaded my understanding, so if you want, please elaborate on that a bit.
It's easily one of the longest, more elaborate comments I've made in a long time - which is saying something considering how verbose I can be at times - so at the very least reply to the points I tried to make/explain. Oh, and yeah, the Duckman bit deserves to be embedded down here.
Well, it's good that you sound more reasonable than your language in your previous post would suggest.
In a happy note, I finally got through to Nintendo, they're sending me a DLC code. It should take three business days ... because their system for sending out the codes is badly designed.
Also having gender neutral options still opens up more options for people who may want to play as something/someone other than a male character.
@DavidMac
Don't you worry, it's all right. Just make sure to remember Duckman's speech, it's a good one. As for your addendum to your last comment, yeah, of course. The side effect of this, though, is the implication of a character's gender being a key element to him or her. Which is a doubled-edged sword in any game with a featureless, bland, customizable blank slate character - on one hand, you have a character that's your avatar in the game, while on the other, your character's characterization amounts to "the guy" or "the chick" you play as.
Now pick any Final Fantasy game (given your profile picture's art style, I figured out the example would fit): you play as Terra in the sixth and Cloud in the seventh, but in each installment the main reason for them to be the way they are is the story, rather than some quota the game feels like having the need to fill. You could name them however you want, and that's because it's the story trying to suck you in, rather than you placing yourself in the story. That's all fine in my book.
Now pick Lara Croft, namely her classic iteration, and get her sex symbol status out of your mind for a second. She had various key elements that made her ideal to appeal to anyone:
1) adventurous side, for young boys.
2) attractiveness, for grown boys. (If that floats anyone's boat, and it did back in the day.)
3) strong and independent, for girls.
4) cunning, smart, and persistent, for anyone.
Gender alone doesn't make a character appealing - there's gotta be more to the character than that. Take Mario now, for example. Sure, Peach's status as a damsel in distress seems to have become a bit of a bad stereotype nowadays, but is it really that much of a problem? The games have made it a point not to be about the destination, but rather the journey itself - rarely, if ever, your favourite level is going to be the final one. So it's more of a commedia dell'arte kind of thing, where each and every character isn't that fleshed out per se, because his or her role can change with each individual game. In the Switch port of NSMBU, Peach has even become kind of playable via Toadette's Peachette form, and if linking the concept of a beginner character to a female avatar somehow carries unfortunate implications, remember that Nabbit did it first in New Super Luigi U, and Nabbit is most likely male (his Italian name, as far as I know, makes it a male anyway). Where am I going with this, you ask? Simple - take Super Princess Peach, and how it made it a point to reverse the role. What happened then? What we got was a complete misunderstanding of what playing as Peach was supposed to be like, what with it being an easier Mario game - basically Peachette's implications, only extended to the core game - and Peach's own gameplay mechanic involving her emotions (which was already bad) and how she could change them at will (which has the even worse implication of "women changing emotions whenever they see fit"). In other words, some things just aren't broken, so no need to fix 'em... am I in the ballpark with this one?
That said, my hopes for future Smash characters isn't much about gender-specific or race-specific representation as much as it is about franchise-specific representation, because that's what Smash is about. More characters from a series being female is okay, as long as the most famous faces from the same franchise (female or otherwise) get in first. Let's suppose now that Tomb Raider, again, is getting a rep. And suppose for one second that I was the most chauvinistic guy you ever knew. Even then I couldn't bring myself to give Kurtis Trent top priority over Lara Croft herself making it to Smash beforehand. Because Smash is about flagship characters before anything else. That said, some alternate-gendered alts can be used to give more characters their time to shine as well: if good ol' Crash Bandicoot made it in, I could only be pleased to see Coco as one of his alts. Especially now that the N. Sane Trilogy made it a point to give her the exact same amount of playability as her big brother, down to the exact same moveset.
By the way, hoping @CharlieSmile will get to see this comment as well, there are female Piranha Plants, come to think of it. Namely, these ones.
It's still all in good fuuuuuuuuuuuun...!Show Comments
