The organisers of the 19th Game Developers Choice Awards have announced this year's nominees. The winners of each category will be announced on 20th March at the San Francisco Moscone Center during the 2019 Game Developers Conference (GDC) event hosted by Tim Schafer, founder of Double Fine Productions and LucasArts industry veteran.
On the Switch front, Nintendo Labo has been nominated for the innovation award and is up against the likes of Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption 2 and the tile-match puzzle game, Tetris Effect. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has also received an honourable mention in the game of the year category and Dragon Ball FighterZ got an honourable mention in the best visuals category.
In terms of indie nominations, the challenging platformer Celeste has been nominated for the best audio, best design and for the game of the year award. It also received honourable mentions in the innovation and narrative categories. The developers Villa Gorilla (Yoku's Island Express), Sabotage (The Messenger) and Nomada Studio (GRIS) are all up for the best debut nomination and Digital Sun (Moonlighter) received an honourable mention in this category. To top it off, Into the Breach has been nominated for best design and Wandersong has been nominated for the best audio award.

ME ! 🤓
@hatch @KingdomHeartsFan Me 🧤
you know how Nintendo Labo is designed for kids age 6 and up?
we're the "and up"
@KingdomHeartsFan hand firmly in the air! My kids love it. And so do I.
@hatch Yah, I figured with you 😂
I have fun busting out the Vehicle Kit for a little bit each weekend, or playing in the toycon garage
I love how Labo winds people up. It's completely pointless getting angry about something that's not aimed at you. It might not be as successful as Nintendo hoped but I can't help but admire the ingenuity.
@KingdomHeartsFan I dunno I've seen a lot of complaining since it launched. I wasn't singling people out but there is definitely a contingent of hand wringers out there. Personally I think it's brilliant.
@IHateTombs

I placed my LABO toys on the top of bookshelf when i didn't use it.
Well, a little bit dusty...
I haven't played my LABO since 2 months.
But, i still gave them attention.
I have to wait until June 2019 to buy LABO Toy Con 03 Vehicle Kits due to my priority on other games.
Well that link is all about God Of War, Red2 and SpiderMan
Remember when people thought LABO would be the hit for the holidays. Clear who came out on top by making big AAA games in 2018 instead of playing with cardboard.
@KingdomHeartsFan 👋
(Well, I will admit that I haven’t played with them in a while, but I do still bust em out sometimes, and I fully intend to get the Vehicle Kit at some point! 😃)
@IHateTombs
My bedroom is not so big, but still able to store a lot of games + Amiibos inside a bookcase and some video game boxes on the top of bookcase.
Just need some arrangement and Voila... Tidiness. 🤓
@IHateTombs "But i’m really happy Labo is winning awards, and the fact that schools are allowing kids to be creative. It’s fantastic in that regard."
This is where it benefits kids more in a Learning environment. And most likely where the awards stem out from.
I think in 2019 cardboard can be recycled with the roadside waste collection.
I’m indifferent towards Labo but against that competition, it really deserves the innovation award. RDR2 was great but I wouldn’t call it innovative.
I still need to pick up some of these. But I have no where to put them for now...
Red Dead Redemption 2 and Tetris Effect are nominated for an innovation award? 😆😆😆 Okay, and why exactly?
@KingdomHeartsFan my son and I
I should have been nominated, as I've been using cardboard to play with since the 1970's!
I may not be personally interested in Labo, but I fully agree that it is very innovative. How is Red Dead Redemption 2 innovative? It's a really good game, but it's basically just an open world shooter with mini games. That's been done countless times before at this point. Sure they did it well, very well, but what is innovative about that?
Agree with several of you above: indeed, how are those nominated games innovative... (apart from Labo)
Neat. Might pick up the Vehicle Kit when the price drops.
