The SNK 40th Anniversary Collection for Nintendo Switch will include multiple titles from the Japanese veteran's library of work. As the November release here in the west draws closer, another two games have now been introduced in trailer form as a part of the collection.
The first is Street Smart, a 1989 beat 'em up about throwing down the best fighting moves and claiming all the glory. Players can move and fight in eight directions, with two unique fighting styles on offer. There is also the option to select from the "Karate-man" or a wrestler. Prehistoric Isle was released in the same year and is about two pilots who must explore an island where many planes have disappeared. It's essentially a horizontal shoot 'em up that promises to take players on an adventure through the land of the dinosaurs.
This trailer follows the news that an additional 10 games would be added to the collection after launch as free DLC. Below are the first five DLC games, with more announcements to come:
- Chopper I
- Fantasy
- Munch Mobile
- Sasuke vs. Commander
- Time Soldiers
The games already confirmed in the collection can be seen below:
As we noted in our E3 2018 hands-on, the collection includes a rewind function and certain games will be playable in both 'Home' and 'Arcade' form.
Have you played Street Smart or Prehistoric Isle before? Are you looking forward to this SNK release? Tell us below.

I thought those two games were already confirmed to be included in this collection awhile back. Still cool though.
I never played the arcade version of Street Smart but I did enjoy the Genesis version I got on the cheap in late 1992.
I hope Square re-releases the Taito Collections on Switch. I owned the Xbox versions and played the crap outta them.
I played Street Smart in it's arcade form back in the day. I find the game unique in that as you attack, the opponent gets pushed back towards the opposite end of the field. Like momentum is being added to your punches and kicks. There's nothing else beyond that, though. I always thought it was a nice touch, and I've not seen it done again until the 3D fighting games started coming out (like in Virtua Fighter, Tekken, and Dead or Alive).
@shonenjump86 Yeah it's already been confirmed. Not sure how these trailers get picked up as 'new' news by the outlets.
@shonenjump86 Yes, we already knew about Prehistoric Isle, at least. That's the game that has me anticipating this collection so much. A totally underrated gem of a shooter!
@shonenjump86 @masterLEON Yes, they were. I guess it's just a video to highlight these games like the previous ones about the Ikari Warriors trilogy and Athena/Psycho Soldier. But I'm starting to wonder if there will be more than 13 games on the card, since they already revealed free DLC...
Not quite as good as the Sega bundle, but I'll end up getting it eventually anyway.
Just wish these games made it onto the cart, but I guess it's not as bad as Capcom's mega man collections.
23 titles is a nice total, I just hope we don't need to wait too long for them to arrive. This collection of arcade games will offer much more replayability than 20 or even 40 NES games can and they've aged much more gracefully too.
Is this launching at full price or is it around the captain toad price point?
It's good to see they delivered on the promise of "more than 13 games", although I guess they count the console versions as separate games. Anyway, nice additions.
But Street Smart has a console version, the one on Mega Drive / Genesis, and it seems that it's not included. What about that "console versions will be included"? I always had the suspicion, and this seems to confirm it, that only NES versions would be included.
By the way, it's strange this collection hasn't been announced on other systems too.
@Mr_Pepperami The latter
@Moroboshi876 Doing a quick Google, it seems the Mega Drive/Genesis version of Street Smart wasn't produced or published by SNK but a company called Treco. So that may be why that version isn't being included.
@Moroboshi876 No, they don't count the console versions as separate games. If they did then the total games on the cartridge on day 1 would be 21 rather than the 13 that they've been saying all along.
And in addition to those, we're getting a minimum of 10 more DLC games of which we know the first five (I say a minimum since there's the chance we'll be getting another game in the final five that has both an arcade and a NES version).
And feel free to correct me since there very well may be some exceptions, but I don't think SNK was really active themselves in the home console scene before their Neo Geo console, outside of the NES that is. Other home conversions of SNK content like the Atari 2600 and Atari 5200 ports of Vanguard were licensed by 3rd parties for home conversions.
As such while they're based on SNK properties, those particular versions don't actually belong to SNK and thus aren't available here for inclusion.
@Moroboshi876 I believe this is a Switch exclusive. I forgot if it was mentioned in a trailer, interview, or official store page.
@Atariboy Well, it's due on November 22, I'd really like to see more announced games and having a total of 40 (different games) for 40th anniversary's sake.
@FragRed Good to know, thanks.
@masterLEON It seems so, but I say it's strange. It's something that would give them money too if it was released also on PS4 (and I guess Xbox One would be left out, as usual).
I liked Street Smart in the arcade, it was a decent for the time one on one fighter where you could get bashed from one end of a street to another and the loser usually ended up getting taken away in an ambulance...never tried the Megadrive version...
@Moroboshi876 No problem. I always assumed it would be 40 games, like how Rare Replay did 30 games for their 30th anniversary. It seems like either a missed opportunity, as well as kind of cheap.
@Regpuppy The problem with the way Capcom is doing this is that instead of free DLC, they treat the collection as two separate pack with one on the cart and one as a download code. As a new package that is okay but in the second hand market that totally destroy the point of it being a complete collection cause then there's no download code for the second batch of the collection anymore since it got used when new so you're really buying half a collection second hand when it was suppose to be a complete collection. With the way SNK doing this, even if you bought this compilation second hand, you could always get the 10 extra games free of charge back on the collection for as long as SNK doesn't take down the download server.
@retro_player_22 And it's not the first time they pull this kind of crap in order to impede second hand deals. Remember Resident Evil Mercenaries on 3DS, with save states that couldn't be erased.
@retro_player_22 I know, and this is why I said it's not as bad as the Capcom collections. Still not optimal, for a long term collector, but not the worst. I would still prefer everything on cart, but nothing I can do about it.
Wait, these two games belong to the initial 13 games line-up, so no additions here :S
I don't have any attachment to SNK or their games, but some of these look interesting. Especially Ikari Warriors! Before I even think about this, though, I'm going to get the Mega Drive Collection, and the Mega Man and Street Fighter collections.
@TurboTEF
I dunno if know that anecdote but Street Smart was a kind of prequel to Fatal Fury !
If you listen the Street Smart's music of the first stage, you'll be surprised to hear that it's the two-player battle theme of Fatal Fury !
PS : I never played the MegaDrive version, only the arcade, so dunno if the theme remains the same on console but yeah with the arcade, no doubt about that.
I have no personal connection to these games, and as such I had a hard time deciding whether I actually wanted to buy this game or not. I had originally pre-ordered the special edition from NIS (Order first, decide later) and then canceled it and decided not to buy it, then I finally settled on ordering the normal version with gamers club discount for $31.99
I have an appreciation for the classics, even if I don't spend all that much time playing them and some of them seem dated to me. I don't understand how anyone who grew up in that era wouldn't have an appreciation for the classics.
@TurboTEF there was actually a Taito Collection Vol 2 that made it to ps2 but for some reason not the Xbox. Another 30 or so classics!!
@JaxonH you will enjoy quite a few of these classics within this collection! 😊
I have heard some rumblings about the fact that not all games are available right off the hop (as well as for the Nintendo online NES games), but I appreciate that more games will come gradually (and free), as it gives players the chance to more fully explore the first offerings. I have bought compilations before with 20+ games before, and invariably some games just don't get the attention they deserve.
Am really looking forward to Prehistoric Isle. Also, while this doesn't really taint the collection for me — it kind of just makes it more complete — but the NES version of Ikari Warriors 2 is one of the worst games to ever grace that system!
@joey302 I could've sworn vol. 2 came out on Xbox as well and had Syvalion and G - Darius on it. I'd buy a re-release in a heartbeat since the PC version has that DRM that bricks your computer if you have Windows 10.
@BRAINFOX lol yea as many times as I’ve been in Gamestop if i saw a Vol 2 for Xbox I would’ve nailed it! Never saw it in my life...only PS2.
@joey302 Just looked it up. The NA Xbox version got cancelled for some reason.
@BRAINFOX interesting....maybe the ps2 version didn’t sell that well? Hmmm 🤔
