Physical Nintendo Switch releases are all the rage right now. As excellent as the eShop version of Enter the Gungeon was, noticeably it never received the hard copy treatment on release. Devolver Digital and the game's developer Dodge Roll look to be finally sorting this out by teaming up with Special Reserve Games.
The distributor specialising in collectible video games recently issued the following tweet to confirm the news:
Unfortunately, there's no indication on when the Switch release will become available.
In case you're wondering, Enter the Gungeon is an endlessly replayable twin-stick roguelike with satisfying combat, random levels and multiple weapons, items and secrets. We gave it nine out of ten stars and said it was an absolute joy to play.
Tell us in the comments if you've been holding out for a physical release.

And the waiting game pays off for me once again. The only digital game I have caved on was Celeste and I don't blame myself.
I'll take a SMOL one plz
I’ve hit 100 hours in gungeon after paying $7.50 for it so i kind of feel obliged to buy it physical
I hate this whole "hey let's see if it does well and then release a physical copy later" thing.
It's really starting to feel like a dirty, underhanded tactic to push people into double dipping.
One of not so many awesome indies among oceans of trash, if you like a rogue-like genre this game is a must have, physically or not is up to you.
@Heavyarms55 where do you think these indie developers are going to get the money to buy the thousands of dollars worth of stock of physical carts to release these games they don’t have a big following yet?
If you don’t want to support indie games, fine, don’t. But they make all their money once the game sells. And they can sell to same people who don’t need a cart for a game that’s only a few hundred megs and then make enough money to buy the carts to sell to crazy people like you who won’t buy a game unless they do a physical release.
Most of these are more intended as collectors editions for people who adore the game. Either deal with whatever bit of crazy in your head or don’t, but stop blaming cash strapped developers as if they’re trying to scam you, they’re not. Grow up.
@Heavyarms55 I'd much rather they done it this way than the way many indies were doing it in the latter half of last year, which was to release a physical version either alongside the digital release or soon after. This tactic was pushing the price of the digital release up by a good margin for the sake of parity. This was a 'dirty tactic' and I was fairly vocal on here about it. I said at the time it wouldn't last though as the indies would be taking a huge hit to their digital revenue as most folk don't want to pay £30 for a small indie game worth half the price. Nor do they have a need for plastic boxes and the extra tat the publishers include to justify the price. These physical versions of indie games are for a niche group so the approach they're taking now by releasing the game digitally for the correct price and then catering to this niche group further down the line when they've made some money back on their game is the correct one.
@DavidMac I buy games I want even if there is no physical release. I even double dip when a game I like is ported to a new system I also like. What I am not interested in doing is buying the same game twice on the same system!
Shove your insults where the sun doesn't shine!
I still kinda prefer digital with the Switch except for the big games. Having to swap carts all the time just to play little indie games is...eeeewwww...
@Heavyarms55 It sucks for those who like physical but I don't think it makes sense to release a title on cartridge if you think the title might not sell. It's not like the titles have huge publishers with fat wallets behind them.
@roboshort I do understand the money argument - though I don't buy it for every indie studio. Not every indie title is made by some borderline bankrupt studio living on cup noddle and chewing gum. And one like this is already a highly successful title on other platforms.
But why would anyone release a product that at least they aren't confident in?
Further, as to the other point some have made, Nintendo could and should change their policies regarding indie titles needing to be the same price digital and physical. I understand their viewpoint, but it is an obsolete viewpoint. Of course a physical product would cost more than a simple download, and why shouldn't it? With a physical product there is manufacturing, shipping and all that and you end up with something real that you truly own. There is plenty of justification for that higher price tag. That justification doesn't exist with digital.
All these indie games released on Cart are a waste. The minimum cart size for Switch is 2GB, most of the indie game only used a couple hundred mb of space.
Why didn't they bundled a few of these digital games on one cart?
@Nincompoop Oh why doesn't Nintendo have a cheaper, smaller option?
@Giygas_95 I know right! I couldnt care less about physical. I want everything on my sd card so I can play whatever whereever I want without the hassle of changing carts all the time
@Heavyarms55 2GB is already very small, you can't even buy a 2GB USB stick/memory card anymore.
Nintendo never though that Indie games will ever be put on carts when they made the console. Now they encouraged all the best indie games be released on cart to fill in 3rd parties absence.
Special reserve games are run worse then Limited Run was in its infancy. Prepare yourself for disappointment.
I would never buy this digitally but will support a physical version. Creating more confidence in the physical market i dont want a download only future AT ALL.
@Heavyarms55 100% agreed. There was the argument that brick and morter stores would be against cost difference but they need to stop complaining or there soon will not be any physical games to sell at all. People will pay extra for a physical version like you said.
I already have the game can I just buy the Ammonomicon separately please?
This was going for peanuts in a recent sale, so if I end up loving it then I may consider it sometime.
Can't see why people are complaining though. If you buy Day 1 then you know the price will come down later and a physical edition could be a possibility. If you're not happy paying full whack for a digital download then stop buying them at release. Be patient and play something else.
I like the use of Nintendo themed weapons; Samus Aran’s arm cannon with a charge shot, the NES duck hunt gun complete with ducks, Koopa shells, etc. I might pick this up along with Konami and Hyper Light Drifter.
The opening line here had me considering the environmental ramifications of Nintendo bringing back physical games full force.
Then I ran some calculations.
You'd have to buy more than 25 Switch games to use up the same amount of materials for cartridge production as ONE game for N64 would take. (3.5 grams vs 90 + grams)
You'd have to buy over 200 physical Switch games to make up the weight of the Switch and its dock!
So. While packaging and transportation might still factor in as detractors compared to digital distribution, the games themselves are a good bit easier on the planet than the case used to be.
/lecture that nobody asked for
Patience wins again for me. The funny part in all this is i never asked for a huge backlog to begin with-- Time and money have been eluding me hard as if late as I would've made far more digital purchases. So my recourse is rentals, and for now, that takes physical releases.
I am completelly happy with my digital version but, wow, I could really buy this AMMONOMICON even without the cartridge
@Heavyarms55 Yeah. Runner 3 was released with a physical version from the start, though I don’t know how well it sold. It didn’t review great despite being quite good. So not sure what the best option is.. I don’t want to think indie studios are trying to get people to double dip but that could be the case.
I’ll buy a redundant physical copy no problem. ...Because the game is that damn cool and it deserves the support. Love it.
Did anyone find out more since this announcement?
