Good news if you love board games and you own a Nintendo Switch, because French publisher Asmodee has confirmed it's bringing its virtual version of classic medieval-themed board game Carcassonne to Nintendo Switch.
Named after the French town of the same name, the rules of the game are all about strategically placing tiles down and amassing the largest amount of pieces (or followers) on the board before the final tile is placed. Asmodee Digital’s CEO Pierre Ortolan has also gone on record stating that, “Carcassonne is the first Asmodee Digital title of many to follow on Nintendo’s platforms.” So expect plenty more board game shenanigans on the go.
Have you played Carcassonne in real-life? Do you think it'll make a good transition to video game form, and will it suit the console controls of Switch? We want to hear your thoughts...

Well, it was already great on XBLA so no reason it wouldn't be on the Switch. Add an asynchronous online mode ("play-by-mail" sort of thing) and I'll buy at a high price.
Hopefully they will release Scythe. I enjoy Carcassonne, but can be a little simplistic.
I own the actual board game (with various expansions) and it's beautiful.
I also played it a lot on the Xbox 360. To say I love this game is an understatement
Yes, something that isn't Monopoly! I've not played Carcassone myself, but I know it's a huge brand. I think it's the game that popularized meeples.
What's more important is that Asmodee is talking about releasing more digital board games... For those who don't know, Asmodee is the big bad corporation in board gaming world, gobbling up smaller publisher like Disney does with franchises. They have a lot of their own games in catalogue (like Splendor, 7 Wonders, Colt Express, Dixit, Seasons, Dice Forge...), but they have also absorbed some several renowned studios – including Fantasy Flight Games. And FFG makes a ton of games based on licenses, their Star Wars titles being at the forefront (after they ceased partnership with Games Workshop). Very good games too.
Now the games I'd like to see on the system aren't Asmodee ones (Neuroshima Hex and Blood Bowl, maybe Star Realms), but hopefully this opens up for more publishers. Of course nothing beats playing with a physical copy, but sometimes you want to play with someone far away or just don't have the storage space for those huge boxes.
I expect Talisman and The Horus Heresy won't be far behind then.
I love this game. I probably won't get it digitally, but I would recommend it, physical or digital, to board game lovers and non-board game lovers alike.
The digital version is better than the board game in a way because it's so easy to mis-count the fields in "real life"! Don't get that issue on a console
@Captain_Gonru Asynchronous and asymmetric mean very different things. I’m confused by your comment
I'd like Asmodee bring some Ystari games to Switch : Caverna, Agricola, Caylus, and why not Arkham Horror LCG !
That's quite the art style they're running with here.
Not sure I dig it. But I'm a big Carcassonne fan, so it really is unlikely to stop me.
I recently bought the actual board game and I like it even though I don't get to play it too often. Anyone know if the Switch game will have the expansions? I've only played the base game and would like to spice things up a little. Would be nice if they were all in one game.
Switch is perfect for this. I hope we see Settlers of Catan as well.
@Captain_Gonru aha! Now I get it. Yes that’s annoying. I assumed you were making the same mistake. Accept my apologies Captain
Carcassonne is the IP of German board game publisher "Hans im Glück" btw. No idea why Asmodee is in charge of the Switch version.
@gurtifus: Caverna and Agricola are not Ystari but Lookout Spiele games. Could still happen though, as Asmodee bought Lookout some years ago. Agricola is very likely, but Caverna is not that popular, so don't expect it.
Ironically I first heard of this game when I was out of state last week; my aunt and uncle were given it as a gift awhile back. Unfortunately I never got around to trying it out when I was there. It might be worth a look-see on the Switch.
I wonder if this will include the expansions... I’m not much of a fan so I’ll pass but fingers crossed one of my more loved board games get digital editions on here!
Personally I am not a big fan of Carcassonne, but I may buy it just to encourage other board games on the switch.
Looks like its come a long way since early ipad days, if its priced reasonably im all in.
@scamander Both these games are distributed by Ystari in France even after Asmodee bought Ystari.
